Torah Minute by Rabbi Bakshi: The Number One Commandment

In this week’s Torah portion, Parashat Yitro, the Jewish people are receiving the Torah on Mount Sinai. The first of the Ten Commandments opens with “Anochi Hashem Elokecha” — “I am Hashem your G-d.” At first glance, this sounds like a statement, not a command. Yet the Rambam teaches that this is a mitzvah: the obligation to know G-d. Faith can be inherited, but knowing G-d requires effort — learning, reflection, and internalizing His presence in our lives. This awareness must live in our minds and hearts at all times.
