Torah Minute by Rabbi Bakshi: Teshuvah Means Return
This Shabbat is called Shabbat Shuvah, the Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. It is a time when we focus on Teshuvah—often translated as "repentance." But in Lashon HaKodesh, Teshuvah does not mean repentance. It means return. When a Jew sins, he may feel distant from Hashem. Teshuvah is the act of returning to our Source, to our true core, where we are always one with Hashem. The process is not about becoming someone new, but about uncovering who we really are. The same applies to Tefillah and Tzedakah. Tefillah is more than prayer—it is connection with God. Tzedakah is more than charity—it is justice, doing what is right. On Shabbat Shuvah, we are invited to return, to reconnect, and to do what is just and true, bringing ourselves closer to Hashem as we prepare for Yom Kippur.
