Torah Minute by Rabbi Bakshi: Breaking the Ice with Fire
Makat Barad, the plague of hail, was fire on the inside and ice on the outside. This strange combination was not random—it carried a deep message meant to awaken the heart. Fire represents warmth, vitality, and sensitivity, while ice represents coldness and indifference. The Egyptians were warm and caring toward themselves, yet cold and insensitive toward others. This imbalance is called ga’ava, ego. The Torah teaches us to live with one temperature: the same warmth, care, and sensitivity we give ourselves must be extended to others. When our inner fire reaches outward, we break negativity and grow closer to Hashem.
