I have with me on camera somebody who's
an old do user and how do I get to know
this person I'm meeting out for the
first time he took daim to learn a
memory of Steve North and he took quite
a lot of daim and I noticed that the
location was quite odd it wasn't
Brooklyn New York or Lakewood New Jersey
or tck New Jersey or even Miami Florida
or Chicago Illinois so why don't you
tell us where are you
located so I I live in the Olympic
mountains and that's in Washington State
uh it's in the the Northwestern P
peninsula of Washington state so it's an
isolated area so I'm geographically
isolated
from uh a lot of tour life so what aloff
has allowed me to do is to get access to
the sheram that I need to unlock the
talmood so art schol has been uh gain
changer so so much but I've started and
stopped learning gamar with art scr as
well because I haven't had the sheum to
really back it up to um unlock and
unfold things and so what I've been able
to do with aloff is to um listen to
like Rabbi Ellie stansky and rabie
Rosner and rabie
schwarzberg um and and and unlock things
in ways that I I've never been able to
do before and that has just kept me
going and kept me going and made me very
excited about things and I'm so excited
uh every single day to get the new
sheram and to keep going because I I I'm
currently geographically isolated and so
what aloff does is it breaks down the
geographical isolation there's also a a
temporal isolation like on separated in
space and time and so I I can be getting
sheram literally in the wilderness you
know congressionally designated
Wilderness I I live right next to
Olympic National Park and I was a park
ranger for at this point uh many many
years I'm not a park ranger anymore um
because I'm shirot again and so you know
I had to make make some changes but for
many years I was out there literally in
the wilderness and so what aloff has
allowed me to do is is to get access to
the the learning that that has really
pulled me back to yides kite pulled me
back to the Torah like it's it's not
some sort of either or you know either
you're living in New York or you're
totally in gas uh it's it's it's
allowing Tor to penetrate in ways that
never happened before when I saw that uh
um that there was the for stepen
newworth I said well like this is
somebody that I can say thank like
here's here's a man that that I I I I
see him I'm hearing about him like this
is somebody to whom I can say thanks
like that you like you helped bring this
to me you don't mind um taking a step
back how how do you how do you hear
about alaf and even further back like
you mentioned you were on an off
observant like you seem like you're at a
place now where like you I just see and
hear from your voice like the excitement
you have for just horor learning I I I
would ask you for a to give me that
excitement even though we pray every
morning right make make it sweet for us
but we all really want it to be sweet so
we take take a step back like where did
you taste it and like how you end up you
know where you are now and like how the
would you hear of alaf and you know and
and what it's doing for you now so I I
heard about Al I mean it just by
searching it was just a basic search
like how do I learn
learn and and and I mean I I'm going
through we were going through kadan um
so that that's when I when I when I
started I was learning with with a Kusa
uh who lives in EK and I've been
learning with him for over a year and um
I found him through Partners in Torah
and I had started with a previous Kusa
in 2009 2010 uh learning bakama and so I
in in there's a a section where it
refers to condution uh and um like how
does ownership get established and how
do you make a Kenyon uh in in the in the
in the 20s um and uh um so I I looked at
the schedule for do yomi and I I I I
said oh I we can I can start at
kadan and in order to uh to to to do
that like I I I needed to I needed I
needed shm and so that's where aloff uh
stepped in with these resources that
grew up in you grew up in the wilderness
you said you grew up in this area that's
right yeah yeah wow wow so when you were
growing up did you have any um Jewish
educational background or no
no wow so so uh it um so there's this
starting and stopping but with with uh
with the shiram it it just keeps you
keeps you going and there's the the the
continuity where this is happening every
single day if I miss a if I miss a day
fine you just miss make it up and rabbit
La has been very clear about that like
okay you missed a day you missed two
days you missed three days fine just
keep going don't stop going yeah and it
and has happening every single day and
so it's just it's just very exciting and
it's it's h it's like eating or drinking
or uh breathing air I mean it's not
something that I can just store up Bank
up or something like that it's something
that I need every single day how' you
get to this how' you get to this passion
and joy of learning
Torah by doing it and being supported
honestly I mean that's not um I I I
loved it in 2014 when I stopped and 2009
when I I stopped but to have this sort
of support is is a totally different
experience and so that's pushing pushing
me actually pulling me out of out out of
the Wilderness and and make me say Okay
I I I need this I need a I need a
community and so it's pulling me toward
toward Seattle where there's a a
thriving Jewish I mean some there there
are moments honestly I'm not
exaggerating when I I I I want to cry
and I don't cry but I but like in
general I don't cry but there are
moments when I want to cry because I'm
just so thankful because it it's like
somebody just like took the plastic bag
off your head and all of a sudden you
can breathe and it's like oh my goodness
like I'm just so so thankful because
this is the I mean this this is this is
Jewish life right here this is this is
Jewish life and and this is the most
important thing that we can be doing
right now and uh and yet so many of us
have have gotten uh distracted by oh
well am I getting paid enough at work
and uh am I getting getting far enough
in my in my job and uh what's my
retirement accounts looking like what
are my investment accounts looking like
and there's so many distracting things
and and to know that I I I mean I
literally pick up I I'm I'm holding
right now like the the the resource that
the key that unlocks the door to gamarra
and Jewish life that goes goes back
thousands of years and it's and it's and
it's right right here and and and again
those downloaded sham I just like
anywhere I am regardless of whether I
have the the connection or not I I I can
I can I can pop those open unbelievable
so I really appreciate this conversation
is like is above and beyond for me what
I could say to you is is that act first
of all keep up the good work um if you
need anything from us if you're ever in
the New York area give us send us an
email send us you have my phone number
um you know send us send us a text and
you're an inspiration for all of us I'm
certainly going to share this with the
newer family
um this is this is essentially you know
there are so many different people who
are benefiting from these products and
projects but when you hear from somebody
who's literally you know cut off in time
and space from regular Jewish life and
they're living and breathing and
connected to Torah and as you share
spending hours and hours a day sometimes
connected to Torah learning um it
certainly makes it all worthwhile for
all of us you know and it's uh
inspirational for us gives us the energy
and encouragement to to keep on
going thank
you
