Few things in life
are more enchanting
than the potential of winning the lottery.
The things that I'll buy,
where I'll go, what I'll build.
It's all very, very exciting.
Except, did you ever see the news
when somebody actually wins the lottery?
It's always the same image.
A husband and wife standing side by side,
holding a giant ceremonial check
with a huge number at the end of it.
All smiles,
elated at the idea
that they have just won
hundreds upon hundreds
of millions of dollars.
Refresh the page a year later,
maybe two years later.
Usually the result...
devastation.
They no longer have money.
The marriage has fallen apart.
What happened?
You see, the answer is simple.
When something comes that easy,
when something comes that fast,
when something comes with no hurdles,
easy come, easy go.
The difficulty in the challenge
of guarding ourselves
to make sure that we look
and see what we are supposed to,
is one of the most
difficult challenges of life.
It's a battle we wage
each and every day.
It's one that's extremely difficult.
But if it was easy,
then it wouldn’t be worthwhile.
Difficulty means that
it is worth the overall effort.
In our effort to win this battle,
we keep in mind something
that the Midrash tells us
in Sefer Bereishit.
The Midrash says: אדם זה מאד.
Man is plenty.
What does it mean ‘Man is plenty’?
Man is not plenty,
man is an individual.
He's one, he's singular.
‘Man is plenty’ means as follows,
that a person is not מאד
as in multitude,
but a person is infinite.
A Jewish person has
the ability to do and achieve
and to go wherever they seek
and wherever they put their mind to.
The next time a person's
faced with a challenge,
we look inward and realize,
I'm not singular, I'm not limited.
I am מאד.
I'm infinite.
Because it's difficult,
because it's challenging,
that's how we know
this battle is worth waging.
Man...
you...
are infinite.
