And the truth is that Yomkipur is the
ultimate in a second chance. That is, if
we were to distill the essence of what
Yom Kipur is, Yom Kipur is a second
chance. It's the anniversary of the
ultimate second chance because what
happened was it was uh the time after
the Jewish people got the Torah and then
they made the golden calf which was the
ultimate sin. It was almost the
unforgivable sin to the extent that a
sin could be unforgivable. In the end,
they were forgiven for it. But they had
just received the Torah. Everything was
perfect. And then they worshiped the
golden calf. And at that point, it
ruined the dream that they had gone out
of Egypt. Everything was was on track
here, setting up Jewish history for all
future times, receiving the Torah,
hearing Hashem speak to them. And then
at that moment, they they worship the
golden calf. And that would look like
everything is destroyed. There's no
chance for it. And yet, Hashem gives
them a second chance. And Moses comes
down the mountain with a second set of
tablets to say this is the sign of the
forgiveness of Hashem. So you can redo
it all. You can start again even though
everything was messed up. It looked like
it was messed up, but it actually wasn't
messed up. So it is the ultimate second
chance. But how do we take it from just
being this this defeat, this humiliation
and saying, "Okay, well now we've got a
second chance, a reprieve into something
that's actually caused to celebrate."
And that is the unusual thing about Yum
Kipur. It is a day of celebration.
