Welcome to the soulwards house Sunday
mornings 10:30 or thereabouts.
We're uh learning is alf just like we
started back in paras.
Now we're on parasy
para of maido.
And uh before we get started over here
uh is delivering the new theor this is
just part of the couple weeks ago we
mentioned I don't remember how it came
up. I want Oh yeah I do. We were talking
about that the very very end of the last
inbut the last are the of which people
are so far gone that they're
disenfranchised from the Jewish
community. And the Rebba said a story
about his father-in-law, the furb that
somebody was writing people off and uh
the said, "Yeah, when you get to the
very very very end of the last are about
who to write off until you get to that,
you include everybody." Um and I said,
"Oh, let's pull that up." And then we
didn't I realized we had a of course u
we have a kit, but we didn't have a a
regular.
So now a good friend of ours who uh
shall remain nameless has donated a full
set of we got it small. You know we
don't have that much space at the
soulwards house library. Everything's
compact over here. Um what' you say for
me?
>> You have a story for me
>> but no one's going to hear you. You have
to come over to the mic.
>> Okay. Come to the mic.
>> Okay. So on chabas you don't
disembodied.
>> But I am a disembodied. Okay.
>> Okay. Okay. So on Shabas by Bushkill
Gardens. We had a Shabatone.
>> That was called Bushkill Gardens.
>> Bushkill Inn, something like that.
>> Bushkill Resort.
>> Yeah. So someone came over to me and
they said, "We have a bunch of books
we'd like to donate to Soulwards." And I
said, "I really, really, really
appreciate that. Um, let me take your
contact info. We'll be in touch, but at
the time being, our shelf at the
Soulwards house is full to the brim.
>> So we're going to have to build another
building and then I'll come get the
books from you." And they got so
excited.
>> Really? Yeah, they got so excited and
they said they're looking for it. They
want another building, another facility.
>> The broker who the the sellers agent on
this house is trying to sell us a house
three blocks from here. But I don't want
one three blocks from here because if we
get another house, we we'll do one on
this block or even next door so we can
expand. We we want a dorm so we can do
Shabas programs at the aisle
>> with a full library.
>> With a full library. Yes, of course.
>> What? Not just FODM. No. Yeah. And we'll
have a full library and we'll have uh a
dorm meaning bedrooms because here over
here we used every square foot for event
space. So barem we can do events here
which we do.
Okay. So thank you to our benefactor our
generous benefactor for the and then we
also want to thank our generous
benefactor. What's the name of the
thing? What's the company?
>> Okay. for donating
these beautiful pictures from these are
made by a company called Tridelics.
And uh you see this is a picture of the
Rebea at the Loga parade and it's 3D.
You can tell here on the video you can
it's got a 3D sort of thing. The picture
itself is not 3D. It's it is what it is
but the background is 3D
>> and it has oh well hold on let me show
you. See the soul? Hold it up closer to
the camera so people can see. Soul Words
logo on it.
Get it. Hold it up higher. Hold it up
higher. So, hold it there. Let it get
into focus.
Uh, it's not It's not in focus because
it's focusing on my face and block my
face. Ah, there you go. Beautiful.
Gorgeous. Okay. So, anyone who comes to
this year can have one of those. That's
a free souvenir.
Okay.
Let's start learning parro. Let's get
ourselves ready for parro.
You ready?
>> What are you doing when you get
>> Oh, you got to get the PDF ready.
>> I can start. Okay, fine. All right. And
you see the stack of next to me. I'm
going to make a bra on my coffee while
you're pulling up the PDF.
Okay. Oh, I should mention tonight
>> [snorts]
>> Meaning Sunday night is an event at
Leitk Library in Cedarhurst on Central
Avenue. It's the schlashim of my mother.
Allah shalom. I'm going to be giving a
lecture
on uh lessons that my mother taught me
when my father passed away last year. We
did a similar event for his schlashim
and I'm doing the same event for my
mother. So that's tonight, Sunday night
[snorts] in Cedarhurst at the Levituk
Library on Central Avenue. Tomorrow
night
is going to be a SM Rambam in Pomona.
Do you know where that is? You saw.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. Pomona is Pomona. It's not Monty.
It's next to Monty. But do you know
where? Do you know the address? That's
what I was asking. No. Okay. Anyways,
the Simaram in Pomona tomorrow night,
meaning Monday night. Everyone is
invited. There is a women's section.
All right. Paris, we pulled it up. page
148 in your original liqu
and here we go by mountain tate
in connection with mountain the success
and elim spoke all of these words saying
so the commentaries ask
what what does it mean saying
everywhere else we have lay saying
the participle laymore saying means that
whatever it is that Hashem is saying to
Misha should then be repeated lay
another time to anyone who wasn't there
by mira however by mira you can't say
that vibbal
All the yed were there.
Every yid was present at mountain. Even
the yed who weren't born yet. Every was
there.
Everyone heard.
So what does mean in this case?
You cannot say it means the nishamas
from later generations because even
those nishas were present at mountain
tra and
their foot mountain is. So the mag
answers like this. The concept of
mountain is
as
the point of maid was to draw down the
ten commandments actually not ten
commands we say in English ten
commandments so it's it's the ten
sayings into assam I modus the ten
utterances ten utterances of creation
let there be the 10 let there be is of
creation. How Hashem created how Hashem
spoke the world into being.
So the meag said the point of maid was
to draw down the
into the modus like it's hinted to in
the verse and this is from paras the
gifts of the nium where it says
each spoon weighing 10 silver according
to the holy shekele. So the repetition
of the word assur
10 10 means to draw the 10 into the 10.
Draw the 10 into the 10. Who knows 10?
>> I know 10.
>> What is 10?
>> 10.
>> 10 are theas
that are drawn into the modus.
Okay. You remember that until pes.
>> Okay.
Yeah.
And that's the mag says why it says
because goes on
goes on my you seem
there's a whole thing not going to get
into this off uh it's a little bit off
topic but I saw once from the padok how
he explains the difference between sika
mira and dbor. They're all different uh
terms for talking. They all have
different connotations. At any rate,
dbor is generally more connected with u
conveying instructions. Here's what you
got to do. Amira is more about conveying
information. Sikha is more like just
chatting just to to connect.
So it makes sense anyways because it
says is we translate as commandments
even though literally it's not
commandments and the modus is the divine
code the information upon which the uh
upon which reality is built. [snorts]
Okay. Okay. So that's the idea is to
draw the into the
yeah okay base
ine is so what's the concept ine why
does it always do this we had a nice v
it was beautiful it was non-threatening
it didn't demand anything from us it was
cool information we could just repeat it
we had a nice 10 10 people like that
they like when the math adds up now the
deba comes and says what does this mean
in Aveda.
I thought I was going to get off
scot-free and now I'm going to have to
work. You know, Aveda means work.
Google mayor Ga May Maynard uh G Krebs
and find out what it means to say work.
Maynard Grebs. Whoever Googles it and
posts it in the comments. We're going to
give you Where's one of those 3D
pictures?
Where I don't see the 3D picture
>> behind my laptop.
If you Google mayor G crabs and why I
said that when I said aa aa then you can
have one of these pictures. We might
even send it to you if you live in the
continental United States.
>> Explanation after the question mark. You
mean after when we say a
>> Oh my goodness. That is you googled.
Okay. [laughter]
[cough and clears throat]
The the means the the light of but that
can't just remain in the abstract. It
has to illuminate
the real world every day. The belt which
is the world was built from
not like those who believe is one thing
and the world is another thing. In other
words, they believe in Tyra. They love
Tyra. They learn Tyra. But that's Tyra
and this is real life. A guy once came
over to me. I was I don't even want to
say where it was. I I was speaking
somewhere and he came over to me
afterwards and he said, "You know, you
speak very nicely, but I got to tell you
something. I'm also a speaker. I speak
about I'm not going to say what he
speaks about, but it was a very specific
like niche expertise." He's like, "You
know the difference between me and you?"
It's the same thing I told my rabbi. I
told my rabbi, "You speak about
spirituality. I speak about reality."
And I said to him, if you're a believing
Jew, why would you make such a
distinction as if spirituality were
something separate from reality?
>> Practicality.
>> Spirituality before practical, but not
as a negation of practicality, but that
that is the ultimate practicality. Yes,
that's the reality. Okay. Um
when he's in a in the right environment.
So he acts like that,
but then when he goes to work or he goes
out in the street or wherever
then he's going to behave like the
world. Got to you flip the page. You got
to flip the page. I'll stall it.
So when he's in the tiva, he acts like
beautiful and then it's the way to the
way to live. And then he goes out, he
leaves the base medish and he goes into
the world. Then he flips the switch and
now he's into
but rather it is required that all of
his conduct no matter where he is
everywhere should be according to only
according to
The Reb clarifies here. We're not
talking about prohibitions. We're not
saying this guy leaves the base and
starts sinning. God forbid. That's not
what we mean.
That's obvious that we're not talking
about sinning.
That what you're not allowed to do
according to
you're not allowed to do. But rather,
what are we talking about?
even in permissible things, things that
you're allowed to do.
You don't have to do it in a manner of
or what the Reb calls.
Remember we spoke about that.
That's right. So, don't be a homeowner.
What's so wrong about a homeowner? That
has deeper connotations than that.
No matter where you are, what you're
doing, even if it's not overtly a
religious task, you have to do it in a
way. Okay?
Ayo.
Is that a song? I don't know.
I don't know. Music. What is it?
You know where it's from?
>> It's from TM. Very good.
>> Is that what it is?
>> Nobody can hear you. You have to come to
the mic. Okay. So, David said, "My tears
were my food day and night.
when they would say to me all day long,
"Where is your God?" People taunting
David Malik saying, "Where is your God?"
And it made David do sad and he would
cry. And he was crying day and night and
couldn't couldn't eat. He was just he
wasn't eating his tears. But what it
means is when you lo you lose your
appetite because you're so sad. I
believe that's what it means. Okay.
So, what is this talking about?
of my tears are my food night and day.
He was so embittered
until he has tears instead of
in place of food.
Mirros that he had tears instead of
instead of food like it's known about
bitterness emotional bitter bitterness.
It causes you to lose your appetite. You
don't feel hunger
is the kite. And what caused what was
the cause of David's bitterness?
He says right there in the later in the
same verse
when people would say to me
or rather um
mila means from above it was being he
was hearing the divine call
all day. That's the emphasis.
Where is your God? Okay, we're going to
have to break this down and explain
that. What does that mean?
That's a specific way of referring to
Hashem.
Specifically means your and your
life force.
It's the elus the kite which enliven
and is
but who is your life force
is well we're going to explain is
it transcends time and space it's above
what we call the system of the worlds
the system of creation
And yet that transcendent God which is
above time and space comes down into
time and space and becomes your life
force.
And even more than that, like it says in
the first of the
issier
than names is the highest name, but is
higher than names. The essence of God,
whoever I am, as I transcend names, the
loftiest essence of Hashem comes down
into Havaya, the highest name, which is
still transcendent above time and space,
but that comes down into
your your life force.
And that's what it means. The demand
that David was hearing, where is your
God all day long? all day long that
is
do you have that feeling of becomes
[clears throat]
becomes that the loftiest most
transcendent indescribable levels of
Hashem's essence are what is ultimately
your imminent life force that you are
animated by and that you feel and you
relate to. You might say, "Well,
sometimes I feel that way." No, no, no.
all day long. You should feel that.
this that you feel that Hashem is your
life force while you're ding while
you're learning nice
or if you have it during a also okay
great but like the Reb says like that's
that's the minimum
learning times of a okay that's that's
bare minimum
that's not the
If that's what what Hashem wanted to
accomplish, he could have accomplished
that with angels or with souls that are
in heaven.
But however, the fact that Hashem took
your precious and put it in a body is of
was for the sake of refining the body
and refining the animal soul.
Because we have this very
common uh concept in
the
itself is pure and holy and pristine and
perfect. It itself needs no tikun. So
why did it come down? Not for its own
rectification
for what it can contribute by refining
the body and the animal soul and by
extension the physical world.
quote unquote secular parts or mundane
parts of life. So if you're going to
tell me you're only feeling the herish
of Havaya is alo while you're in a holy
environment like daving learning and
fabanging then what was the point? Then
Hashem could have accomplished that with
spiritual entities like souls and angels
that stay in heaven. But Hashem sent
your nom into a body to be part of the
world and to have an effect on the
world. Which means you have to feel
that the transcendent God is your life
force. Even when you're doing things
that are overtly secular, but they're
not really secular because you're
bringing your herish into those things
by
Montgion
all day long when he eats, when he
drinks. By the way, we have bagels and
locks here at Solward's house. As
always, as per usual,
come join us. If you wash at your house
and have in mind that you're going to
continue here, you can bench here. You
just have to eat a kazas of bagel when
you're here.
Bish handled when he eats and drinks
when he does business
mention when he speaks with people.
He should feel that his life force
that's animating him is Hashem
just like
uh he feels it during prayer
and uh learning.
Okay, that was a short that's from
Shabas Mikiniml.
I'll tell you a a pale shav
I saw this in a safer of vishnitra
we know the famous gum from tinus
why do labavers all know
because the famous of yankino
were having a meal and one said tell me
and he said
yash
but then later on he He he finished his
food and he told him
our father did not die. At any rate,
what does
she
don't speak in a meal?
Maybe you'll open up first your airpipe,
your trachea leaves before your uh
esophagus and then you'll choke on the
food. So I saw in a vision it's a uh
safer that you don't speak while you're
learning. meaning you speak to but you
don't like speak conversations like
while you're we have like a cafer open
in front of you also you don't speak
while you're doing
you know like the signs all say in all
the sh um so you don't speak while
you're in the middle of ding you don't
speak while in the middle of learning
but what about eating yeah why not
eating isn't you know anything special
it's not you can speak while you eat no
no
don't have casual conversation during a
suda suda is just as holy as doving and
learning And if you have that attitude,
what are you doing?
Yakim means giving, giving priority. You
are prioritizing the a of the kona of
the windpipe, meaning the coyra, the coy
over the aid of the vash, the aveda that
you do with the esophagus when you eat
food.
Okay, just a little pale [snorts] shto
and uh right next
[cough]
[clears throat]
dollar. Okay, this sika is super super
short. Mish, I think this is I know this
is the shortest Sikha that we've had
this year
since we started.
Okay.
Second
neat land in
the is there are people who argue that
because this is called it is called
nister nister means hidden so let it
stay hidden this is what they argue they
say let it stay hidden
we don't have to teach it [laughter]
so what do we answer these people who
say [clears throat]
should stay hidden if it's hidden if
it's nister let it stay nister shas
mountain hutman
the time of the revelation.
The entire TA was given both the
revealed and the concealed.
to the country.
says to the contrary, even what we call
nigla, the revealed was hidden because
we know that the there are 620 letters
on the in the ten commandments on the
two uh tablets. 620 is a hint to 613
biblical commandments. Seven rabbitic
commandments.
You know the seven rebbitic
commandments.
It's always hard to remember, but let me
put myself on the spot. What? Chabas
candles.
It's one. What?
>> Yeah. Mana. Yeah. When you say mana, you
could also say migilla. Okay. Yeah.
No. Halalim.
We're up to six.
What's the seventh? These are all
mitzvah that you say
that's mitzvah.
These are all things that you say.
Hashem commanded us even though it's not
the the commandment is not explicitly in
Tory.
What's the seventh one?
What is the seventh one?
Got to Google it.
Shabasa scandals.
Natayim
McGill
Manraal
>> Adov. Oh bra. Yeah. Yeah. All y Yeah.
Yeah. Is that what it is?
Yeah. Okay.
At any rate, so think about like this.
There are 620 letters in the set of
dibus 613 biblical commandments, seven
uh rabbitic commandments. That's 620. So
basically
the entire Tyra all 620 by the way 620
is a big casser
which is Hashem's rot encompasses 620
distinct commandments but all of that
was encoded in this in the in other
words even what we came to know as nigla
revealed to was not always revealed it
was encoded in a hidden format in the
asetas where the 620 letters of hint to
all of the mitzvah even though they
weren't yet revealed.
Yeah.
Said that. Yeah.
Oh, is gan binigla. And yet
in contrast, ironically,
what we call nister
was nigla. What we call concealed,
meaning
the spiritual stuff was actually at that
moment revealed. What does that mean?
And
because all the Eden at that moment of
mira saw what we call the chariot
is
unedited
in PK like it is explicitly described in
the PK
alon
shonavas
nasher aron
is pum
like it's hinted to in in in the word
the the verse from Tillum
where it says that Hashem's chariot
has myriads upon myriads of lofty
angels. Shinnon are lofty angels
and Shinnon is Sh the axe. Peshar the
face of the ax. Nasher, the face of the
eagle.
Ary
pra, the face of the lion.
Um,
and then the nun
refers to the podum
and the whole thing collectively.
By the way, we have a huska. I mentioned
we're doing sema ram tomorrow night in
Pimona. But then there's the hcala.
Everyone makes a hcala of ram. So we'll
do the hakdama and then after the mishna
you'll get into
and over there in the ra will tell you
about
it'll tell you that this is secrets of
the celestial chariot. So and he and he
says that not everybody learned it and
it was a secret. It was only transmitted
to people who were already great
scholars. But the point is at the moment
of the giving of the Tyra that which is
normally hidden the the secrets of the
celestial chariot were revealed for
everyone to behold.
Which is
so
what we call revealed is concealed.
Sometimes what we call concealed is
revealed.
Everything is relative.
Anything can happen. Okay, that was a
very very short and that was from Shabas
Parasik. No, no, I'm sorry. That
previous one was Parish Mik Shabas uh
not Shabasim.
Makes sense that that was a because um
first of all talking about man but also
the ha of is the marova the vision of
the celestial chariot. Okay, third sika.
We're on page 150.
Ice. We're on the third Sikha. Also a
short short is here today. Okay,
[sighs] let me take a little drink.
Those who are opposed to studying
generally have two arguments.
If it's so important, how come it didn't
always exist?
is
and if we could have survived so long
we live we last so long without it. So
that's a proof that's not necessary.
Okay. So that's one argument. The
argument that
it's new if it were so important we
would have always had it. And the fact
that we didn't always had it and we were
fine without it
just like I didn't have it before. Just
like my granddaddy didn't have it, I
don't have it. Okay.
Base.
The other argument people make
studying
nullifies.
I'm going to try to translate these
terms accurately. Gashim means
physicality. Yash means existence.
But what we mean here is that it's going
to get you so spiritual that you're
going to be like, "Oh, hey Nade Mvad,
there's nothing nothing is real. It's
all
it's all just elocus."
So we don't want to mix you up like
that. We don't want to take you away
from reality, basically. So those are
the two arguments. One is
I don't need anything new. Leave me
alone. The other is I'm going to learn
to say this and uh it's going to take me
away from the regular real day-to-day
world. Okay.
So the answer is
says in the safer
of the
sicknesses and physical medicines. You
know that Ram was a doctor.
You know, I dab at the 7:30 a.m. minion
at Kabad of the five towns. That's my
that's my uh mock since I was saying
kadesh 11 months for my father and now
I'm saying for my mother and my mother's
schlash was tonight as I mentioned. So
there's a yid there who I I mean I'm at
the om because I'm I have to uh I'm
kazen. So there's a yid there. Davin's
in the front row right next to me. Dr.
Shakar who you know ta yid and I see
that
after ding he likes to finish his kitas.
He's the one who brings in the cayenos
and shul also. So he likes to finish
before he uh packs up and heads to his
uh his his practice.
So, I noticed that his phone is
constantly ringing. I thought my phone
constantly rings. His phone rings even
more than mine. And he answers the
phone. It's like I don't hear the people
on the other line, but I hear him
saying, "Okay, so take this, take that.
Okay, I'll call it into the pharmacy."
Okay. Yeah. All right. Um, and he's
dealing with all this stuff and and I
and he's trying to he's just trying to
learn and he's answering all these calls
and he's he's dealing with all these
people have little problems, big
problems. I don't know. So
I I said to him, I said, "Dr. Shakar,
thank you so much because
you have given me the ability to
appreciate a little bit who the Rambam
was." [laughter] Cuz the Rambam, we
know, he writes about it, he had this
crazy hectic schedule working as the
physician for the Sultan in in uh Egypt.
and that nevertheless he was Isaac
Toyota he he wrote the mission of Toyo
but it's hard to imagine that I said so
you give me a little ma you give me a
little glimmer of that and I get to sort
of imagine what it means because I see
uh
trying to trying to learn and in between
learning he's he's answering uh calls
okay
[sighs] so then was a doctor. He said
just like there are physical ailments
with physical cures,
there are spiritual
ailments and cures.
very interesting premise that EB is
setting forth. It's understood from this
that we can understand
many principles that apply to physical
illness and healing
as they apply to spiritual illness and
healing. Now there was sort of like
mushel and nimshell sort of
um
without spoiling it because I don't want
to give too much away but
some you know there's a concept
which is a but it literally means for my
flesh I see God. What it means is
sometimes you can study something in
this world and it gives us insight into
the way things are spiritually.
You had you hear what we're saying?
Okay. Fine.
Um,
yeah.
Oh, do we flip the No, we don't flip the
page yet. Okay.
An illness in general, if you want to
simplify it, means that you have a
situation where, god forbid,
a particular part of the body is either
lacking or or damaged.
It's not functioning properly.
Kai
says felt gished and goof. There's a
specific illness however
an illness that we generally
many people avoid naming even and I was
going to actually refer to that
nothing's lacking in the body. Generally
an illness is something's missing or its
functionality is missing. It's not doing
what it normally does. But there's a
specific illness where there's nothing
lacking, nothing's missing.
To the contrary, as
flesh, there's
flesh that's added, that's growing.
There are there there are extra cells,
so to speak. Not so to speak, literally.
Everyone understands what we're saying?
Talking about an illness where it's not
that there's a piece missing. There's
actually extra stuff growing.
that there's an extra piece of flesh.
Nothing's lacking that's supposed to be
there. It's just there's a little extra
that's not usually there.
Nevertheless, it's a serious illness.
aggressor.
Not only is it an illness, but it's even
sometimes more serious than an illness
where something is missing from the
body. And it's so serious that people
don't even want to mention it by name.
They call it yanla, that illness. They
don't even want to mention it by name.
But you understand what the deb is
saying. Normally an illness something's
missing. Here something is extra.
The additional
growth of flesh
is harmful where it is located.
It can also spread further.
on kiten just like this illness is
different than other illnesses
so to its cure is different from other
illnesses
it's an unusual type of illness it's a
growth it's extra illness is usually
something negative meaning it's missing
I don't mean negative like bad negative
like something is lacking that's
normally there is a positive I don't
mean positive like good but I mean like
there's more there than supposed to be
there. So because this mah is different
than all other makasan,
so too its cure is different than other
cures.
mention normally a healing entails
giving something adding something to the
person.
Mitten emis but here in contrast the
cure for this illness involves
disrupting or opposing the growth and
through that the person becomes well.
So normally person's lacking
growth and so we have to instigate or
encourage growth. Here it's the
opposite. There's too much growth and
we're trying to stop it. We're trying to
put a, you know, put a limit on it. Cap
it off. Get it to [snorts] stop.
[laughter]
Got your finger on the button.
The method of healing this illness was
only discovered a few generations ago.
And the specific applications of how to
do it was even found later than that.
And in fact, we're still in the middle
of
research.
It's not something that is uh
it's not resolved yet. Although I just
saw last week some team stopped
pancreatic cancer in mice and it may
actually have been the discovery of a
cure for pancreatic cancer.
At any rate, um
the point is it's a unique illness that
operates differently than all other
illnesses. The cure is a unique cure
that operates differently than all other
cures. And it was only discovered very
recently.
Flip the page. Oh, you flipped it
already.
Okay.
On the top of page 151.
Now it's understood if somebody doesn't
want to use these
this method of healing
and he's going to argue.
Hold on.
Healing is supposed to develop the body
and strengthen the body.
it shouldn't break things down.
So that's one argument the person might
make.
I mean the Reb doesn't use these words.
So I want to be careful that everyone
understands I'm adding these specific
terms. But like let's say somebody wants
to say and I know I'm going to get
feedback from people who are into
alternative health and things like that.
Um and I'm not giving medical advice.
I'm just learning a right now and it's
all a mush for this anyway. But the Eb
says here, if someone were to say, I
don't want to take chemotherapy, that'll
break cells down. That that that opposes
growth. I don't want to take radiation.
These things, they actually they they
they weaken you. So, it's like, yeah,
but here here's the thing. Something's
growing and is too strong and too active
that shouldn't be there. these things,
knock them out and get rid of them. So,
it would be weird for a person to argue
that they don't want to use those
they don't want to use those uh
treatments.
I should mention not to make this about
me, but my mother whose schlim is
tonight. 12 years ago, she was given
less than two years to live. By the
first time she was diagnosed already, it
was stage four. Started in her lungs,
went to her brain. She had to have
emergency brain surgery over 10 years
ago. And they told her that that's it.
You know, it's so far gone. And she
lived another 10 years beyond her
the longest amount of time they gave
her. And during those 10 years, she
traveled and she took walks every day.
and she attended shiim and she attended
simkas and she married off two
grandchildren. She was at the kupa and
she met three great grandchildren who
she got to hold. She was very active
until Mamish the last month or two she
slowed down but she was very active and
that was all 10 years beyond her what
they told her was the longest amount of
time she could live and I just want to
mention it's obviously because of her
bet and she had incredible positivity
and faith and she was always positive
positive positive she also listened to
the doctors she had a great oncologist
and she took the treatment that the
oncologist uh advised
she did chemo she did radiation. It
wasn't fun. But um
just mentioning the combination between
beten
and uh following doctor's orders, which
is from seems to be the deba's approach.
Okay. At any rate, because I know I'm
going to get feedback from people who
are going to say, well, I I wouldn't
listen to the doctors when they say that
these are the treatments.
So it says that EBA a person wouldn't
say I don't want to do take a treatment
that's going to make things not grow. I
want treatment that'll make things grow.
We say no no no here the problem is too
much is growing. We got to stop it from
growing
base. The second thing
is
another argument a person would would be
silly for him to make would be that
since these treatments didn't exist for
so many generations now these New
doctors are coming along with their new
treatments. Nah, I'm Sam Saposnik. I'll
translate that in a second. I don't want
to listen to these new doctors.
So what is Sam Saposnik? Samosnik is
Russian for I myself am a shoemaker.
It's an expression that Ebi used many
many times. Beitzer the story is
that the Casc used to come and loot
Jewish neighborhoods and then basically
it was a was a game. That's how they
would make money. You'd have to buy back
your own stuff.
And you have to pretend that you don't
know they stole it from you. Otherwise,
they they'll get offended. You know,
they're violent people. So, Samy had his
fillin stolen in a in a raid. And he
found the Kasak who was selling his
fillin, and he asked him how much to buy
the fillin. And the coc told him a
price, however many rubble,
and he says it was exorbitant. He said
that, you know, aren't you ashamed of
yourself charging that much money for
something that you didn't even make?
It's not even yours.
And the cosc feains indignance and he
says, "Excuse me, sir. Yes, I'm a
pushnik. I myself am a shoe maker." He
thought that filling the leather boxes
were some type of, you know, cobblers
material, you know, leather, I guess. So
that that the the punchline of that
story Samapnik means somebody who's
pretending that he knows what he's
talking about and he's completely
clueless. By the way, when chat GPT
became available, I started using it
probably a couple years ago already. And
so I asked the chat GPT about Sam
Saposnik because I started to realize
that chat GPT is a big bluffer.
It just makes stuff up super
confidently.
So I said, "Chad GPT, you are Sam
Saposnik."
And you know it said something like,
"Yes." I'm like, "Do you know what Sam
Saposnik even is?" It says, "Yes." I was
like, "Tell me the story of Sam
Spagenik." And it made up this elaborate
long story where the punchline was, "I
myself am a shoemaker cuz it knows how
to translate the Russian, but had
nothing to do with the original story."
I said, "Chad GPT, that itself is the
biggest evidence and example of some
supposing that you're bluffing me with
total confidence. Straight face straight
face. It's an AI, but like you're saying
it so blindly as if it's a real story
and it's totally made up and you're
saying it like I'm supposed with
it's also called the Dunning Krueger
effect. The people who are the most
ignorant have the most confidence in
their knowledge.
At any rate, so the person is Sam
Saposnik, he's going to say, "They
didn't have these treatments for cancer
when my grandfather was around, so I'm
not going to use something that's new. I
don't need new fangled stuff."
When is this from, by the way? It's from
Yudgiml Thomas base from 1952, the
summer of 1952. So you think about where
cancer treatment was in 1952.
Okay. At any rate,
so it would be rather silly if someone
would say if it' be a Sam Saposnik and
say, "I'm not going to do these new
treatments. They didn't exist for in the
old days, in the good old days."
Any anyone understands that these
arguments are not valid arguments. The
guy who says, "I don't want to do
something that's going to weaken me or
weaken parts of my body. I only I only
want to do things that will foster
growth and make more growth. So that
would be silly. Also, someone says, I
don't want to do a new treatment. I only
want to do the treatments that existed a
thousand years ago. Okay, that would
also be silly.
The thing that you're trying to develop
and strengthen is the healthy part of
the body.
tail but not this extra additional
growth
because it's actually not a proper part
of the body. It's not supposed to be
there. But to the contrary, it is mazic.
It's damaging.
It's bad for the body.
So you have to oppose it. You have to
eliminate it. A mole is
often
that makes an observation. In the past,
this particular illness was not as
common as today. Now, you're going to
say it's the additives in the food. It's
the pollution. It's I don't know. It
could be a lot of things. Could be a lot
of things. But we're talking about
spiritually here. It's an interesting
phenomenon that there's more cancer
today than there was a hundred years
ago. Okay? And the Reb is saying this in
1952 again.
So there's more of it today than there
used to be.
So people didn't search as fervently for
a cure because it wasn't as common.
Milo Hutman Masmin did a to them
and
moreover and this is the primary reason
the cure hadn't yet been made available
from heaven there are different times
when Hashem releases new discoveries
dagen led
but now in the current time remember the
speaking in 1952
as the Mah Is
that this disease became more common?
God forbid
made the treatment more available.
He made available.
Ice test bottom uh column on 151. bottom
of the first comma 151
and
everything in the physical world derives
from its source in the spiritual world.
Okay, so remember this whole thing is
about a mushel a true mushel. We've
spoken about this before in ALF about
how a true mushel a mushel is not just
comparing one thing to another but it's
identifying how one thing coexists
simultaneously on two different planes
of existence. So when we identify it on
the physical level, we are actually uh
able to have insight about how that same
thing operates in its source on the
spiritual plane.
How we doing?
Okay.
Yeah.
So too this disease and its cure which
are physical phenomena but they they
derive from from spiritual phenomena.
is this thing that happened in the the
last few generations
is
it's coming from a spiritual phenomenon
which is also something that developed
in the latest generations. In other
words, the fact that we have more of
this disease in these generations
is because spiritually something has
happened
in these latest generations. There's a
new development spiritually.
We are in the footsteps of the footsteps
of Mashiach. Mameish holding toward the

out of us. So as we're getting toward
the very end of gullis, one of the
things that happened is Malik, we spoke
about a malik last week,
doubt, coldness, psychological warfare,
or as the Reb calls it here,
is insolence.
arrogance or self-reliance
without reason without
explanation without rationale
[sighs and gasps]
is getting
more and more out of hand as we're
getting closer to Messiah.
Yeah, there always was arrogance.
But it wasn't as crass as today. The
arrogance that exists today is
absolutely a new level of arrogance.
So this spiritual clipper of absolutely
absurd audacious arrogance
came down into the physical world and
manifested itself in a physical form.
[snorts]
It's this thing that grows without any
purpose, without any reason. It's
illogical.
It takes power from the body.
As if it were the main thing. Like so
ridiculous.
This these cancer cells are taking power
and life from the body as if the cancer
cells are the main organism and the body
is just there to serve it. It's it's so
preposterous.
Like
[sighs]
any normal parasite knows you keep your
host healthy, right? Okay, cancer is
absurd because it's like why would you
kill your host? Doesn't even make sense.
Nor McDonald said I mean he he died of
cancer but he said uh that they say that
someone lost their battle with cancer.
Why do people when they die of cancer
say they lost their their battle with
cancer? because it seems to me when a
person dies of cancer the cancer also
dies. I would call that more of a draw.
[laughter]
So morbid. [gasps]
Okay. At any rate,
so
this this kipa samolik, this absolutely
irrational,
preposterous, audacious, insolent
attitude came down as a physical disease
which has the same type of ridiculous
attitude.
Yeah.
form
gave us a treatment for it.
And Hashem gave us that's the treatment,
not for the cancer, for the spiritual
cancer.
tails
which is the chemotherapy so to speak
that knocks out this extra growth that
shouldn't be there. In other words,
you're going to say why didn't we have
this in the old days? You know why?
Because they didn't have such in the old
days.
But today where the insolence has
increased and insolence here means just
the preposterous belief that what you're
onlogically independent. You think you
could exist separate from God? What a
ridiculous notion. You're walking around
like like Parra used to say that. Par
said, "I made myself. I'm a
self-sufficient entity." It's such a
philosophically absurd notion. And yet,
it's pretty common. That's what the
materialists believe. The materialists
believe that the world is just here,
doesn't need a god, and uh we just
exist.
It's such an absurd notion. It's
literally spiritual cancer.
And I guess figuratively, not literally,
but like Gen Z calls literal using
literal the way that Gen Z literally
uses it.
Um, so we have the spiritual
treatment for that spiritual disease.
It's calledis. So you can say this, I
want something that's going to build me
up and make me feel awesome. It's going
to pump up my self-esteem. And we say,
well, this is actually going to give you
some BL. It's going to
uh nullify
parts of you. No, no, no. I want to get
stronger, not weaker. Don't worry. The
parts that the is going to nullify are
parts that shouldn't be there.
[laughter]
Okay.
>> [snorts]
>> Um, so
we said that
Last ice.
Now it's understood that there's an
obvious detail here that does not match
the between the mush and the niml
in Marshall.
aus
in the mushel talking about chemo
if you do too much of it then it can go
overboard and it can damage the healthy
part of the body so you want to knock
out the cancer but then you end up also
god forbid you can't just do it forever
and ever can't go overboard with it doc
keagen but in contrast
with the spiritual version of this which
is learning.
You can learn and learn and learn and
keep learning.
It will only damage the arrogance that's
not supposed to be there.
But the healthy part of your self
is only going to be strengthened. It's
not going to be damaged.
It's only going to get more power
as
like we say is strength
and is weakness. What does that mean?
a weakening of the animal soul
and a strengthening
of the godly soul and that's from
base. Okay, that was what our third sa
beautiful.
All right.
H [sighs]
such an interesting concept there. I'm
sure I will get feedback
from many people about that. All right,
take a breather. Drink a little more
coffee.
You saw there's plenty of bagels and
locks still.
>> People want to head down to the SWAT's
house, please come. All right.
[sighs]
All right. You want to do one more?
One more. Okay. We're on page 152. Oh,
you already flipped the page. Very good.
When did you flip it? I didn't even
notice.
Magic. Okay, we're on page 152. We have
one more.
There's also Oh, yeah. We replenished
the hot cocoa. Do you remember that? Did
we mention it in the share that we ran
out of hot cocoa? Yeah. So, we ran out
of hot cocoa last week.
Because we had a group that used a lot
of hot cocoa. Is that what happened?
Yeah.
>> Cold and snowy.
>> It was cold and snowy and they made some
hot cocoa which we're very happy about.
What's that? Muffins.
>> Chocolate chip muffins. [snorts]
And we have new hot cocoa. And of course
we have bagels and locks and cream
cheese. Okay. The fourth.
This is from
in your tests.
Should we do it?
Let's do it. Okay. Page 152 at the top.
yard site is
there are notes from the Reb's

now among these memoirs is a story
that's been published already
is alg
that when she meaning Rabbi was 18 years
old, remember this was the wife of the
Reb, the fourthbark
gazant, she was very sick.
Their doctor
The doctor told her, "You have to eat as
soon as you wake up." She didn't want to
eat
before doning.
Mentions you're not supposed to eat
before davening. So what did she do? She
got up even earlier than normal so she
could davenin earlier and finish the
time of dining. finished doving at the
time when she'd normally be waking up
and then she would eat. She did a trick.
She ate at the same time that she
normally woke up because she woke up
earlier, davened, finisheding and then
ate.
And that way she was officially
following doctor's orders, but not
really.
So that way she didn't eat before
davening, but she ate early.
is
understood, however, that this not only
did not improve her health, but it
caused her to miss sleep. She wasn't
getting enough sleep. So, it wasn't
really a very helpful approach.
So the told her who is the to her
remember she was married to the
Marashbash
was the seventh son of the sadik. So the
sadic was her father-in-law.
So the saddic said tokah father-in-law
said to the daughter-in-law
a Jew has to be healthy and strong
regarding the mitzvah it says and you
should live with them
meaning you should be healthy you should
live mitzvah shouldn't weaken you should
be healthy so that you can do more
mitzvah do them
is
and what does it mean? It's like the the
mag said
mentioned in the mimer
as
in mitzvah
in order to be
we're talking about the the mimer the
rebba said by the way I mentioned before
we started this that this was
so that the rebba set a mimer at every
fabangan Especially
the mimer was always bosani. So when the
reb says in the like we said in the
mimer the reb means the mimer that was
set at that same fabangan. So if you
look up the bosani mimer from tshin test
which is the we're learning is from that
fabangan. So the Reb brings in
this saying from the mag [snorts] that
means
a it's words from from but means that
you have to bring into your mitzvah.
Bring vitality bring uh energy into your
mitzvah.
Yeah. Um,
and in order to do that, you have to be
strong and you have to be happy.
So you you might say, I don't need to be
strong. I don't need to be happy. Yeah,
but to needs you to be because in order
to do the mitzvah properly
investing
into your mitzvah, you're going to have
to be strong and happy. Even if you
don't feel like being strong and happy,
I don't mind. I'll be weak. Okay, you
don't mind. But needs you to be strong
and happy so you do the mitzvah
properly.
So the said then he concluded to her and
he said,
You shouldn't
basically do it on on an empty stomach.
It is better
to eat in order to daven than to daven
in order to eat.
That's what he said. Now he was giving
her practical advice obviously literally
you should better eat get up in the
morning eat and after you eat then go
davin even though says not to eat before
davening better though you should do
that than to get up in the morning and
davin and the whole purpose of your ding
is so you can get dinging over with so
then you can go eat.
All of the stories have to do with the
with the especially ones that were
transmitted generation after generation.
They're not just stories.
The fact that these stories were
transmitted gener generation after
generation means that they're they're
talking to us. They're not just
interesting stories. They're they're
teaching us something
upline that you the listener should
learn from it.
You should emulate it.
What does that mean?
You see the little stars? Okay. Little
three little stars, little asterisks. So
right after that second column on 152
certain
people's uh
stuff that people do basically breaks
down into two categories.
There's the stuff you do for God like
learning to do [snorts]
mitzvah based in the second category
things you do for yourself.
[snorts]
is the
nightion
as far
things that are either really genuinely
necessary
or things that appear necessary
needs or things that you think are your
needs.
Okay, so two categories things you do
for God, things you do for yourself.
is
another way to name those categories is
is is
praying and eating.
Things you do for God will collectively
call them prayer.
Things you do for yourself, we'll
collectively call them eating.
Obviously, eating isn't the only thing
that you do because you need to do it,
but it's sort of the archetypical thing.
So, we have two categories of life. The
dining category and the eating category.
First thing is dvening. Ding means
turning to connecting with knowing
before whom you stand mean before the
king of all kings. The holy and blessed
be he.
Isen. Then the second category is called
asen eating.
Everything he needs he he hungers for.
It doesn't mean necessarily physical
hunger. It doesn't ne necessarily mean
physical eating, but it means different
needs.
When he gets what he needs, then he
quiets his hunger. He fulfills his
needs.
Now
there are various different methods
or manners that one can din and
different manners in which one can eat.
It's not all the same. The different
approaches
as kenzyme and as the dement is
sushbolt
sushbolan.
It could be where a person
is split.
He has a dichotomy,
a rift, a schism.
They're two distinct separate categories
and never the twin shall meet. He has
his ding and he has his eating. Two
completely separate areas of life and
there's no relationship between them.
while he's involved in his spiritual
life and he's learning there's zero
connection to his physical life
and you could think looking at him while
he's in his spiritual mode he's a
complete sadic
but when he's involved later in physical
things
Whether it's business or literally
eating, we called the whole category
eating which could include doing
business. So it could be business or
literal eating
is
absolutely not recognizable in him any
trace of holiness, of spirituality, of
refinement. when you saw the guy
Daviding, he looked mish like a tad
gummer
because that was that world. But then
you see him in his uh business setting,
he doesn't even look like a yuavins.
Well, how can it be the same guy? Why?
cuz this was this that was that you know
the famous story Yasanov
comes uh he the the rabbi gives a
mad chuvaton
rabbi gives this really moving sermon
about doing chuva
and so yanov comes to the rabbi's house
he say rabbi you gave such a moving
sermon about chuva I have to do chasanov
he's the town thief so he has to do
chuva he says I have I came to do chuva
doing chovva and here's all the stuff
that I stole and uh I'm doing chova and
he leaves
and like an hour later the rabbi looks
for his he wants to know what time it
is. He looks for his watch and his watch
is gone. He's like, "Oh my gosh, no,
don't say it ain't so." And he goes to
Ysel's house. He knows where he lives.
Everyone knows Yel the Ghana. It's a
little The rabbi knocks on his door and
Yasel says, "Hello." He says, "Yussel,
please tell me it ain't so. You came to
my house. You pickpocketed me in my
house. He took my watch. He's like,
"Yeah." He says, "Yes, so you told me
you were doing chuva."
He says, "Yes, Rabbi, I did chuva." He
says, "And I don't understand. How'd you
pickpocket me?" He says, "Rabbi, chuva
is chova and business is business."
Mamish, two separate worlds. Chovva is
chova, pure chova. But then business is
business. Okay. He also business
happened to be something that's
forbidden. We're not even talking about
something that's forbidden. We're saying
though that it could be that when he's
in his essin category of life, he's
acting completely secular. Not that he's
doing things that are forbidden, God
forbid, but you don't recognize that
this is a holy person. When he was
doining, he looked like a sadic. Okay?
So for him, there's a complete
separation between the asen category and
the dominant category of his life.
is
regarding this approach. We're going to
use the words of our sages which they
often use. Are we dealing with fools
or we do not concern ourselves uh we're
not talking about wicked people? meaning
to say that I was saying yes such an
approach exists but I'm not even going
to dignify that with a response. I'm not
talking about that like I'm not here to
clarify don't be like that cuz everybody
knows that that's not a way to be. It's
not good to have that complete dichotomy
and split. Okay. So now we're going to
talk about some other approaches how
people um view their and their dominant
parts of life.
Another another way
another approach is that his and are
connected. It's not split like the other
guy. No, no, no. They're connected.
And he looks in he looks in to to to
guide him how he should behave.
But what's the connection between
ornas
or the dominant part of his life and the
practical essent part of his life. The
connection is that one thing is for the
sake of the other. In other words, he
uses the spirituality for the sake of
the physicality. He uses the dominant
for the sake of the
says that means
since he realizes that unfortunately he
can't get around God. He's got to come
to God. God's got all the goodies.
You're going to have to deal with him
sooner or later.
the
and the way to get from God what you
want is like it says if you go in my
statutes I will give you rain in its
time.
So he does what God wants. What can he
do? He's held hostage.
Canon
so that later he can come to Hashem with
his note with his promisory note his IOU
and he can collect
for what Hashem owes him for his
domining
the gamor
Yeah.
The says if a person will will declare
I'm going to give this amount of charity
so that my son shall live.
He still call it meaning it's okay to do
that.
inc.
So the says all right so it's a
legitimate approach in Yiddish kite to
say I will do spiritual things so that
Hashem will then repay me with physical
things. It is it's a valid approach
within Yiddish.
Yeah, Rashi actually does say over there
that
this is not talking about a one-off.
This is someone who will regularly give
to he'll continue giving
is
but even in the in in the in the ideal
situation under this rubric where he
does consistently give stalker it's not
a one-time thing he gives stalker
consistently nevertheless says that Eb
since his whole motivation was self-s
serving he had a pia he had an ulterior
motive this this is clearly not the the
ultimate level
Yes, you're right. The says you should
learn and do mitzvah even not for its
own sake. But in that same saying of our
sages, it completes the thought and says
in order that you should ultimately
eventually come to doing mitzvah and
learning ta for their own sake.
So in other words, this level we talk
about two levels. One level is
spirituality and physicality are
completely separate worlds. Davin and
Essen are two completely separate worlds
for him. And the de says I'm not even
going to address that. Obviously that's
not a way to be. The second category we
just spoke about David and Esen are
connected. He uses the David.
He uses spirituality so he can collect
from Hashem on the things that he wants.
And we said look there there's a basis
for it in the Gora like a guy who says
I'll give charity so that my son will
live. So I guess it's a valid approach
but it's clearly not the ultimate
approach.
Um yeah
is let's talk about the desirable the
ultimate level the ideal level that
obviously we want to at least aspire to
shouldn't be two separate things
and it shouldn't be that doin is for the
sake of
nor but rather
as
eating for prayer not prayer for eating
eating for prayer. What does that mean?
is a
ding you have to do because you have to
not for the sake of something else for
its own sake because he davins
that's obvious
when a person knows that Hashem wants
him to learn to and do mitzvah. So it's
unthinkable. He can't even imagine of
doing anything different than what
Hashem commanded. Obviously, you have to
do it not for the sake of anything that
it gets you, but just cuz that's what
Hashem wants. You do what Hashem wants.
Therefore, heavens not for the sake of
receiving a a reward, right? Like it
says in office,
don't be like the servants
who serve the master
for the sake of receiving rewards
just not not for any payment
does it because that's what Hashem
commanded.
He doesn't ask is he going to get
the world to come paradise
spiritual reward
and certainly how much more so he
doesn't ask if he's going to get
material reward you follow that the Reb
says the person who davs for the sake of
dinging
he doesn't even expect spiritual payoff
so certainly He doesn't expect material
payoff
cuz sometimes people do the what we call
uh David essin but it's not the grub
form of ess. It's the what we call
spiritual materialism.
Materialism
stam materialism is you know the
amassing of
uh physical resources because that's all
you care about.
And then there's spiritual materialism
where a person amasses
uh spiritual reward
like one would like a materialist would
amass material resources. So it could be
a person who
is actually doing a
dominant tulib essin approach but the
quote unquote essin is not literal
physical reward it's spiritual reward.
So it says the EBA the ideal approach is
not even that the ideal approach is you
davin in order to daven you learn in
order to learn do mitzvah in order to do
mitzvah not to receive
even a spiritual reward and how much
more so not to receive a physical reward
is
but this is still not enough.
is
there's another element here that needs
to be included. Not enough that he does
the spiritual stuff for its own sake.
But now even more than that, he does the
physical stuff not for its own sake. He
does the physical stuff only for the
sake of serving the spiritual goals.
Like King Solomon in his wisdom said,
you should know Hashem in all of your
ways. That means all of your ways. Even
your secular and mundane stuff
ultimately doesn't remain secular and
mundane because even that is for the
sake of bolstering your spiritual life.
in
Dan
Broad Street.
[laughter] This is English [snorts]
in bracket. Bracket was in uh
uh [clears throat]
Fu fufic pretent tax
Texas.
So this Yeah, there's a lot of English
stuff here. This that um he's going to
be in
I think it's called Don and Broad
Street. Maybe you Google that for me.
You'll see if it still exists. Don and
Broad Street.
He's gonna be he's gonna have a high
rating in Dun and Broad Street
and uh what it still exists. D
>> unn
Brad
>> Brad Street. Okay.
>> Business rating.
>> Okay. What is it?
>> What? P A Y E.
>> I don't even know what that is. Okay. Or
he's going to be in the 95% tax bracket.
I think the tax laws have radically
changed since the 50s.
>> UN.
>> Yeah. I never got one for soul words.
Okay. Yeah. This is from 1959.
Yeah. There used to be a 95% tax
bracket.
People don't realize this. There used to
be
I don't know the whole history of the
tax codes but in 1959 at least there was
a certain um amount of money maybe
Google it 1959 what was the 95% tax
bracket at a certain point you would pay
95% taxes on your wealth.
So like let's say like the first million
was one rate and then the next million
was like this crazy 95%. Yeah. So you
know the the Rockefellers and the and
the like whoever the
>> 1959%
>> oh 19 just let me just repeat this in 19
this is from Google 1959 the top rate
was 91%.
>> Contrary to popular this did not apply
all income. Contrary to popular belief,
this rate did not apply to all income.
Right? Only income
>> over a specific
>> high threshold. Okay.
>> Income threshold
over $200,000.
>> Oh my gosh. So in 1959, the 95% tax rate
applied to married couples making over
$200,000 a year, which would be
equivalent to 2 million today. So after
two $2 million you're going to pay 95%.
Okay. That
91%. Okay. Fine. Yes. And that was in
the good old days in the Eisenhower
days.
>> Today top marginal rate much lower.
>> Top marginal rate today is 37%.
Okay. So just letting you know I don't
have a dog in this race. I'm not I'm
certainly not educated in this. I'm just
mentioning that the prosperous good old
days, the Eisenhower days when people uh
worked at a shoe store and uh had two
car garages,
um they uh there was a 91% tax rate on
super wealthy.
Oh, the United Kingdom had a literal 95%
super tax. Okay.
So, the ultimate purpose of life is not
to be in Dun and Brad Street to have a
high rating in Dun and Brad Street or to
be in the 95% tax bracket.
That's not the purpose of life norad,
but rather that everything should be for
the sake of the purpose of life.
So you could learn with a with
tranquility
and you can do mitzvah with a
broad prosperous way
and giving generous. That's the purpose
of life
and not to be satisfied just that you
are doing these things but actually to
help others to facilitate that others
should do it as well.
is that through being a rich guy,
it will actually help you to influence
others. It's easier to influence others.
You ever noticed that the rich guys
people listen to them?
No,
you see says the deba with poor people
people laugh at them but rich guys
people imitate them right that's the
difference between crazy and eccentric
same behavior if a a poor guy does it
it's called crazy if a rich guy does it
it's called eccentric
so how much more so if a rich guy does
something that's good a rich guy does
something that's weird people
will rationalize it and and say it was
good. But so how much more so if a rich
guy does something that actually is
good, people will imitate it. So a rich
guy has a lot of influences.
So it's good to be rich because then you
can influence people.
Shabas, hitting Shabas. When the rich
guy keeps shabas, everyone's also going
to say, "Oh, maybe I should keep
Shabastov
Shabas." Because people are going to
say, "Why did he become rich?" Because
he kept Shabas. Obviously, that's not
the reason why keep Shabas.
But the ver knows that part of his
um responsibility of being a wealthy
person is that he has this influence on
others.
When he starts putting on
then other people start putting fill in.
If you are wealthy,
what's wealthy? In 1959, it meant you
had a combined income of over $200,000
in your household.
And you should all said that's
equivalent to $2 million today. I'm
going to just say this for fun. If your
collective household income is more than
$2 million a year, you must put on Robo
Toms. Cuz if you do, [clears throat]
other people are going to start putting
on Robo Toms.
matzah bakery baker.
So you're going to put on a benams,
other people going to put on. If you're
going to eat matzah, then everyone, even
the simple bakeries are going to have to
switch over to matzah.
And that's what it means.
Eating for the sake of praying
that your physical
life serves your spiritual life.
that that all of his physical stuff
which we call collectively his essin
should be for the sake of bolstering of
serving of infusing the adding extra
life force into his what we collectively
call his dominance. in which means not
just prayer but all the spiritual stuff
domining and learning and doing mitzvah.
[laughter]
Oh, we forgot to flip the page because
we were looking up uh Don and Brad
Street.
Okay, excellent. Last page.
>> This is the last page.
Yeah.
Yeah. So, we're in the bottom of the
column on page 154, first column.
Now there's another level here that we
can extract from this story and it has
to do with the detail that in the story
the the person who was given this advice
was a woman a mother a mother of a
future reb
is and here is the teaching you
understand so far we have one basic
idea.
It's better to
eat for the sake of praying than pray
for the sake of eating. Which means
that the ultimate level is where you
incorporate your physicality into your
spirituality.
Not like those who use spirituality in
order to get physicality, but they use
their physicality in order to enhance
their spirituality. Like we gave the
example, the person who's wealthy and he
puts in rebeno toms and gets other
people to put on rebotoms. And everyone
here could figure out different ways
where that applies. Um, you know, there
are all types of physical resources and
creature comforts that if you're doing
something
spiritual that you can incorporate those
things into enhancing your spiritual
life. Um
classic uh example
is uh I don't know if it's classic but
in my mind it is that Pinasis had the
biggest biggest house in Schlov and he
was so he wasn't into houses he wasn't
into nice stuff and he wanted to
downsize and the alter wouldn't let him
he said no no no you you're my I need
you to have have the nicest house in
Schllo because your having the nicest
house in Schllov causes so much benefit
spiritual benefit to the community
because when people have to make a
meeting a town meeting they have to meet
in your house and then because it's your
house you end up having an influence and
it ends up increasing the spiritual
level incl
but now we're going to go into another
detail and has to do specifically the
fact that the person in the story who
was given this instruction ction was a
woman was raisin.
When you want to raise children who are
not people who use spirituality to get
physicality
and not people for whom spirituality and
physicality are two separate worlds, but
rather the ideal level where they use
physicality to enhance the spirituality
which we just explained is the the the
ideal level. If you want children to do
that, if you want to raise children who
are going to be that way is
it depends on the mother. No pressure
ladies.
She should behave that way and she
should infuse that spirit into the
children
from their very youngest years on
vigil while they're still in the cradle.
They should infuse, the mother should
infuse in the children, even when
they're in the crib. This um this
feeling that everything we do is for the
sake of cleaving to Hashem.
And if you don't have that spirituality,
then even if you have all the essence,
all the physical comforts, it doesn't
have any taste. lacks taste.
There's two ways to read this.
Tom
can mean taste. It also mean has no
reason. So it's a double meaning here.
Like without spirituality for the
physicality to serve the physicality
even if you have ample physicality,
it lacks taste. Meaning you can't really
properly enjoy it. Also means it lacks a
reason. Like what do you have it for? If
it's not for the sake of enhancing
spirituality, what what what's it even
for?
It's just a distraction. It's a
disruption. It's extra weight. It's a
burden. Ah, but if it's to serve
enhanced spirituality, then great. Let's
get more of it.
And then with that attitude, you will
raise children who will go on to be
great among the Jewish people.
They will have with what to and with
what to eat. Meaning they'll have ample
spiritual lives and ample material
sustenance.
and their material life will be the way
Hashem wants material life to be.
Hashem wants that you should have from
his wide full open holy broad hand.
Meaning it's not it's there's nothing
noble in aseticism in poverty. To the
contrary, if you're using your wealth
for the sake of spirituality, great. You
should have ample wealth.
Not just that you have ample blessing in
your children, but also the other
there's three categories of blessing.
So the children should be amply blessed
and the health should be amply blessed
and the sustenance the parnosa the money
should be amply blessed. There should be
a lot of material resources. It's not a
shame. It's if you're using it for the
right stuff it's beautiful.
You want to pull up the singing before I
finish? Try to find it. Okay. It should
be like it says to Mali Malachi.
Um, I will pour out upon you blessings
without limit.
Yeah, it's good to be rich if you're
using the wealth for the right reasons.
So, Hashem should pour out you, pour out
upon you blessings without limit.
A house that is blessed
spiritually and blessed materially
both
the father and the mother should have in
their children for long healthy happy
years.
both spiritual and material.
It's not a contradiction. You don't have
to
separate yourself from the physical
world to be more holy and spiritual.
You have to incorporate the physical
into your spirituality. And that is the
purpose for which the soul came to the
physical plane for its embodiment
experience.
to incorporate the physical. We've
spoken about this many times in it's a
recurring theme. I think the first time
we had it, we spoke about everything S
tells a should listen. We said how can
that be is the body. We said because
there's something about the body that
poses an advantage to the soul. And
we've had this theme over and over
again. And this is one of the main
teachings of Shamv that the physical is
where it's at. If it is channeled in the
right way. If it's for its own sake,
then it's a disaster. But if it's
channeled as a way of bringing more
kadusha into the world, into the
physical world, then then it's not only
okay, it's what it's the whole purpose
of creation. There you have it.
Oh,
[sighs]
okay. We want to wish everybody
ample brahas, unlimited brahas, infinite
brahas spiritually and materially and as
the material enhances the spiritual.
Thank you for joining us again this
week. We'll see you mashem next week.
