Why does the Torah preface the Ten commandments with the statement that God spoke 'all' of these matters? What is the concept of kol - all? What does it mean that the entire Torah is included in the ten commandments and that all ten are included in the first commandment? How are we to understand the multiple facets of reality that seem to be both good and bad, yet are all included in God manifesting in reality? Find out in this week's parsha podcast.

5775 2015 this week's paraa is para yra
in the paraa this week we have the
Revelation at Hari at Mount Si the
Jewish people one and a half million
people strong all had a revelation of
God a spiritual
experience that the heavens opened and
they were able to perceive and receive
the will of God many many many
interesting things about this Revelation
about the description of the Torah of of
the Revelation one of them is the fact
that we find that sages tell us is that
the Revelation it manifested as the Ten
Commandments God said to mosu to give
over the Ten Commandments but first God
spoke the first two Commandments of the
10 I am your
God upon you shall have no other guards
in front of me those two statements were
made by God to the entire je people they
all heard God's voice after that they
asked that God speak through Moshe
through Moses because it was too much
for them to Bear to hear God's voice but
the bottom line was that the Jewish
people heard God's voice and these Ten
Commandments represented there were they
included the entire Torah they included
the entire
relationship the the ins and outs of
what it means to be a servant of God
somehow these Ten Commandments included
all
613 of The Commandments and on a deeper
level the first of the
10 your God included all 10 the fact
that the Jewish people all heard God's
voice speak and say I am Hashem your God
meant that they all had a relationship
with Hashem and it meant that all of The
Commandments which would flow out of
that relationship the way that the
relationship would manifest through the
613 Commandments were something that
they would now be oblig ated in because
of the fact that they have this
relationship with Hashem with God so if
we were to focus on the Ten Commandments
and try to understand a certain depth
which the mes brings out we will have an
encapsulation of the entire Torah of our
entire relationship with Hashem with God
what it means to be a servant a proper a
servant of God now I want to focus
specifically on the first pk the first
verse of the Ten Commandments and this
is in chapter 20 verse one and the medes
focuses in on this PK on this verse and
brings out an incredible idea an
incredibly deep idea three different
pieces in the Mish bring out the same
idea in different ways and if we look at
this verse it's a verse that we could
easily skip over we could easily think
that oh it's just like this this type of
verse has been stated many many times in
the Torah there's nothing unusual about
this verse but the Mish says otherwise
it says like this chapter 20
vers1 God spoke all of these matters as
follows and then the verses go into the
Ten Commandments I am hasem your
God I took you out of Egypt from the
house of slavery Etc and it goes through
all of the Ten Commandments now what's
unusual about this
verse God spoke all of these matters and
said what's unusual here and I believe
that this is the focus of the Mages is
that the verse speaks about the fact
that God said all of these matters why
does the verse specifically say that God
spoke all of these matters why couldn't
the Torah just say God
said God spoke to the people of Israel
or God spoke to Moses and he said why
does it
say all of these matters obviously God
is speaking and saying all of what he's
about to say so when we look at this we
always have to look at it Through The
Eyes of Kaz Through The Eyes of our
sages through the prism of the way that
they understand what's going on in the
Torah because there are no words in the
Torah that are in vain there are no
words in the Torah that don't have a
deeper meaning don't have a special
meaning and there are certain words in
the Torah that signify and hint to very
deep and profound Concepts specifically
the word Co the word Co which means all
that word hints to a very deep and
Powerful idea which the medish is going
to speak around or speak about and we
need to try to understand what the
medish is referring to we could go
through a number of different places
where the Torah uses the word Co yobu
Jacob when he has a conversation with
asov ASV says no you keep it and then
yob says no yes call I have everything
he says I have all the word call is used
there another
place
about that God has the greatness he has
the the Splendor etc etc all it refers
to the concept of all what is the idea
of all what is the idea of Co which is
referred to here in this verse God is
about to say the Ten Commandments and
he's going to speak all of these words
what is the idea of all what is the
concept of coal also related very much
to the concept of coal not very much it
is the concept of Co
the concept of is the same word same
letters as the word k word K means all
inclusive K means the all-inclusive
aspect we've spoken about in the past
but clearly there's something here
that's connected to the all-inclusive
aspect what is the idea of call what is
the idea of K what do they have to do
with each other what is the idea of the
all-inclusive aspect we mentioned that
somehow the assos include they're the
inclusive aspect of the entire Torah the
the first of the Ten
Commandments I am your God it's
inclusive of all of the Ten Commandments
it's inclusive of all of the 613 mitzvos
there's this concept of all
inclusiveness we also find it elsewhere
we see it by tius we see it in regards
to those special strands that we place
on the edge of our four corner garments
the Torah refers to it as you're to see
it and it's to remind you of all of the
Commandments of God you see this concept
of call all it's all inclusive it's
somehow contained within the cus all of
the Mitzvah all of The Commandments it's
representative of our relationship with
Hashem the 613 Commandments that are
included somehow within the MIT now
let's return back to the concept of the
The Ten Commandments because here we
have this preface it's called laymore
that God spoke all of these matters so
there's an allinclusive aspect as we've
said in the concept of the The Ten
Commandments now let's learn together
the medish which speaks about this idea
and describes it in an unusual way we're
going to read this medish together and
we're going to say what is this medish
saying what's going on in the medish the
med says like
this God does everything at
once
God causes people to die and he gives
people life at the same
time he causes people to have
afflictions and he heals at the same
time a woman who's about to give
birth those who go traveling in the sea
those who travel through dangerous
deserts those who are captured they're
placed in jail they're
incarcerated
east west north
south God hears all of their prayers at
once now if we look at what the men was
saying in the first point here it seems
to be saying that there are people that
God is giving life to people are being
born children are being born there
people who are old and passing away it's
all happening at the same time God is
doing those things at once God is curing
some people and God is giving
afflictions to other people at the same
time God is placing people in
challenging situations a woman giving
birth person incarcerated in jail but at
the same time God is listening to their
prayers as they pray to be released they
pray for salvation so there's a seeming
Duality within reality and that is you
see that there are two things that seems
to be completely the opposite life and
death being cured and being Afflicted
being freed and being incarcerated but
all these
things Hashem is beyond all of these
things hem is the one who's the the root
of all of these things God includes them
all now the Mish continues and
says we also find that God he he fashion
light and he creates Darkness the two
these two things are opposite they're
both rooted in
God we see that there's something which
is inanimate you have the Earth somehow
God takes the Earth and animates it
creates a
man after a person dies so the person
goes back to being
Earth we also find other places where we
have this transformation that's going
from one form to another and returning
back to the other
form at the beginning what does it
say all of the water that was in the
Nile River was turned into
blood and in the end what happens the
blood turns back into
water flesh which is alive can become
dead something which is dead can go back
and become alive you take a piece of of
animal meat a human being eats it
becomes incorporated into the human
being and now that which was dead
becomes
alive Moses's staff turns into a
snake and then the snake turns back into
a
staff the sea became dry Earth
and then the the dry Earth turned back
into the sea it went and the waters
returned to the place where they were
supposed to be during the splitting of
the yamu of the Sea of reeds so if we
are going to look at this point in the
Mish the Mish seems to be saying that
when we see Cycles occurring in in the
world when we see one thing transforming
into something else and then
transforming back into something else we
see stuff moving in in certain Cycles in
certain transitions this is also rep
presented by the fact that Hashem is co
he's the source of all of this he's the
source of all of these transitions
bringing things into different stages of
their reality and then the says one more
point we find that the T says one
statement which is that a person is not
allowed to have relations with his
neighbor's wife that's that's forbidden
but the Torah also speaks about the
fact that people live together people
live in a they live in a in a a
neighborhood and the natural state is
that people live together so you see
that there's one thing and its opposite
there's a relationship the relationship
that's created the relationship between
people can open the possibility for
things which are not what God's will is
so you see that there are two different
opposite realities one is called good
and one is called bad one is that there
are proper relationships that are
between one man and his fellow and one
is the opposite where there's a
relationship which is negative between
one man and his fellow and all of these
things says the magician in finishing
off when the T when when Hashem when God
speaks the Ten Commandments and he
starts by
saying God spoke all of these matters so
what it's coming to say is that God
spoke them all at once all at
once is called
verore that you have all of these
different possibilities within the world
you have all these different transitions
that occur in the world you have
conflicting possibilities within reality
you have the opportunity for good
neighborliness and you have the
opportunity for negative relationships
with one's neighbors you have the the
healing and you have the sickness you
have the death that comes into the world
and you have the life that comes into
into the world all of these are all
included in the word of Hashem in the
debor in the speaking of God now we're
starting to get a feel we're starting to
get the the Mish when it speaks it
speaks around the topic because
sometimes you can't speak directly into
the topic so the me is giving us what is
this all-inclusive aspect what is this
idea you can't really put your finger on
it you can't really touch Cole Cole is
everything you can't touch everything
but we're trying to get an understanding
of what what does it mean everything
what is coal what is allil so there are
two more pieces in the mides I want to
share with you which will help us still
get more of a taste more of a feel for
what is this concept the next men is a
small piece but it's just beautiful just
a beautiful
idea come and
see the way of God is completely
different from the way of
man when you have a king of flesh and
blood that king is not someone who can
go out and wage war and then be someone
who teaches children you know teaches
small children Torah or teaches small
children is an
educator but God it's not so with
God previously at the
sea god is a
warrior the verse refers to the fact
that God was a warrior man of
war and the P says in
job with God's power the the the sea
became
calm now what happens today when God
gives the
Torah he comes down and he's an educator
God is now teaching his children the
Torah he's teaching him teaching them
the way of life he's teaching them these
lofty Concepts
and that's what the verse
says who is like God who teaches like
God God is a teacher but God is also a
warrior that's what it means says the
mes when the verse says God spoke all of
these matters God is all inclusive God
has the ability to be a warrior on one
hand be a warrior one day and to the and
the next day to be a teacher a
compassionate teacher teaching his
children so again we have these two
seemingly conflicting aspects how can
one man or one God or one king be a
warrior and also be aam is someone who
teaches children God can do both God can
do it all that's the second medish now
I'd like to share with you one last
medish this mes also gives us a taste a
feel for what is the concept of call
another
explanation what does it mean that God
spoke all of these matters what's all of
these
matters
says whatever the prophets are going to
prophecy in every
generation they received it at Mount
Si Moses says the people of
Israel we have those who are standing
with us here
today and also those who are not with us
here today now when we look at the verse
which describes the second half of the
verse which describes those who are not
with us here
today it doesn't say those who are not
standing here with us
today it says those who are not with us
doesn't refer to them standing those who
aren't here so who is it referring to
who is Moses referring
to it's referring to the souls who are
going to be created in the
future they don't have any
substance you can't speak about the fact
that they were standing there or not
standing there because they weren't yet
created even though they were not there
at the time they all received that which
was theirs if they had a NAA that they
were meant to reveal at some point it
was revealed already at har at Mount Si
but it was just waiting the time was not
yet right for it to be manifest in the
world for it to for for the prophet to
actually say it in the world it was
waiting for that moment when it would be
appropriate for it to be said so here in
this description of the word call the
magish is teaching us that the
experience the spiritual experience the
the ru the divine inspiration which
occurred at Mount Si was so
all-inclusive that all divine
inspiration that would ever occur
throughout the generation
occurred then at some level it wasn't
manifest it wasn't it wasn't revealed
but it occurred at some level there at
Mount son it was included in that
experience now there's one last point in
this Mish over here it's three lines and
I'm going to finish with this
idea says in explaining what
is what does it mean
says there was one voice here the word
call is with a not with a
cuff there was one
voice which split further into seven
voices and then they split into 70
languages and for me looking at these
words of RAB the the one splitting into
seven splitting into 70 to me that's the
key which unlocks for us the concept of
Co which unlocks the concept of all
we've spoken in the past about the fact
that am Isel the Jewish people is
referred to as the the singular
Nation they are a unique lonely Nation
the Jewish people however we are
referred to as the kle the all-inclusive
aspect of the 70 Nations Jacob Yakov
ainu is the one he is the all-inclusive
aspect of the Jewish people and the
Torah describes the fact that he had 70
Offspring which correspond as our SES
tell us to the 70 Nations
just like Jacob includes all of his 70
children the people of Israel the Jewish
people include all of the 70 Nations we
are that which represents the cud the
allinclusive aspect is saying that when
Hashem says When God
says he's about to speak all of these
words included in all of these words is
all of the things that ever will be said
all of the statements all of the
revelations all of the prophecies that
will ever be said in the world all of
that which speaks of a relationship with
Hashem that will ever be said in the
world all of that is included in the
Revelation at harena at Mount Si God
includes it all God can be it all God is
a king God is a warrior God is a teacher
of children it's not a steer it's not a
contradiction because God includes
everything God gives life God takes away
life God causes some people to be sick
God causes others to be healed God
places a person in a place of challenge
God hears the prayers of that same
person God creates light God creates
Darkness God makes one thing transition
into another thing and God makes that
same thing transition back to its
previous state God makes all of these
Cycles occur God is all inclusive we
experience God we experience our
relationship with hem as
multifaceted as having ups and downs as
having times that are good it's having
times that are challenging it's having
times that are dark it's having times
that are light having times of life and
having times of death having times where
God is a warrior he's tough with us
having times where God is the
compassionate teacher and for me the
lesson of this mes the the point what is
the mes coming to tell us why is this
all included in the why is this teaching
here about about all inclusive the The
Ten Commandments the relationship with
God it includes everything to me what is
coming to teach to me what it's coming
to say
is that every single aspect of our lives
every single thing that we
experience is an opportunity for us to
have a relationship with Hashem every
single thing that occurs now is included
in the sa experience every single thing
every voice that we hear every D Torah
we hear every time we hear a message
which speaks to us which speaks to our
soul which speaks to our heart all of
this is encapsulated is included in the
Sin experience is included and that
relationship which Hashem opens up the
world and he says here I am I am Hashem
your God I took you out of Egypt I want
to have a relationship with you and
whether it's the Egypt experience
whether it's the Exodus whether it's the
slavery or it's the the freeing of the
slaves all of this is part of our
relationship with Hashem all of it is
meant to be included and this voice is
heard not just then and that's the point
of the last medish the voice of God that
n that revelation
it was heard then but it was heard then
for all times it was heard then for all
generations any voice that we hear today
is something that was spoken then and
that means that the relationship that we
have is today with Hashem is alive it's
vibrant it's no different than it was
when Hashem completely reveals himself
even if today it's only a a seemingly
small Revelation it's part of that
original Revelation it's part of that
cycle it's part of one time it's dark
for one person it's difficult for
another person it's good or for that
same person it's difficult for that same
person Hashem is hearing his prayers
it's all part of that same relationship
that we have with Hashem the potential
for which was there from the beginning
from har when that relationship was
forged between God and the Jewish people
between God and every single one of us
whether we were there then or whether we
were not there then physically standing
there I want to bless you and please
bless me back help us all to be able to
touch that place of call to be able to
touch the all-inclusive aspect which is
where the the relationship with him
begins and where it continues and where
it returns back to that state of unity
hasm should help us be able to access
that Oneness with him should help us to
be able to see all the opportunities in
our lives all of the different
challenges that arise the good times and
the bad times all of them as opport
opportunities for growth and
relationship with him thank you so much
