hey good afternoon folks welcome
everybody back to beyond the seven live
from jerusalem with rabbi aaron david
poston
he's teaching us the 48 ways this is a
profound course folks it's very exciting
and he's on part six today
last week's class was awesome it's only
going to get better and better and
better and better and i just look
forward to hearing more and more from
rabbi poston so let's tune in
rabbi how you doing this evening in
jerusalem i know it's very late thank
you so much for teaching us
i appreciate every moment you do share
thank god bro hashem once again
to all those people that are out of
chavez already and
people who are watching this at some
point during the week and the shabbat
shalom whoever is
still out there in shabbos world
yes so thank you very much for having me
that we're going to continue now with uh
it's called we'll call it yira it's
number six on the list
i want to remind our viewers and what
we're doing here this
is a package of information that was
handed down
at mount sinai now when i say at mount
sinai because it's the mishna and it
says this
these were this is part of the mission
in the sixth the sixth chapter of perky
havot
but the truth is it was way before mount
sinai because the exodus we were slaves
we had a slave mentality we weren't
really ready for wisdom
so we had to be taught how to acquire
wisdom
and the 49 days that it took us from
leaving egypt until we arrived at mount
sinai earth i should say
we actually arrived in mount sinai a few
days early
earlier than the revelation but
nevertheless
it's the package of the steps let's say
called the steps that we had to go
through in order to be able to receive
the revelation
now isn't that wonderful right so
anybody who's already wise and is
watching these series will say oh it's
so pushu
obviously you need these different steps
you might be missing something so it's
worth watching it's worth reviewing it's
worth knowing
and for those who are on the path that
i'm on right
to acquire knowledge
if you didn't know it so it's important
information and if you know it it's good
to do review as we'll find out is one of
the uh
48 ways to wisdom is to review
in the meantime what we're talking about
tonight is called yira
and we're going to talk about some
misconceptions what it means to have
fear
many misconceptions and what we're
really talking about we'll discuss that
as well
i just want to reiterate last week we
spoke about or
so all was the idea how small we are
today when we talk about this year we're
going to think about how great god
is and the truth is next week we're
going to talk about humility
and these are all part of like i said
their steps
okay so there's a logical sequence it's
not
my logic this is from the kurdish work
himself this is from
the almighty that created the universe
who created every one of us
and we'll begin but we use this safer by
the way this is just one of this farm
we're using right if you can see this
this is
published by sharp press but it's put
out by a couple of friends of mine
uh comrades as we would say colleagues
rabbi nakami they still
are very much associated with ashitara
and uh
they adapted this based on the teachings
of noah
and this is a safer called midrash
it's a it's also
it's not as modern i mean this was put
out there this year
but the schmall the original
safer is about 500 years old
and it was translated only recently into
english
and we use that also thank god and
and some of my own knowledge uh putting
it all together here so we ask you to
bear with us
it's very late here it's a it's already
11 35 at night
so um it's the bewitching hour as they
say
now take the word year off
is you'd raise olive hay okay
also the word to see to comprehend
with your eyes right to see something is
spelled very similar in other words
aleph is
basically part of the root to see is
reish olive hay
and yera is yudresh so whenever you're
reading
and you come across whether it's to see
or to fear
you could be confused or let's say i am
always confused
because i really need context i i have
to guess sometimes
just through the context is it to see or
to fear and we're going to hear in the
very beginning
that there's no coincidence that those
two words are are very much related
so in in this in this book that revenge
put out
it basically says that fear comes from
drum roll please seeing
seeing impending consequences right
that's that makes sense
right to have a true sense of fear you
have this idea that oh my gosh
something is coming or there are
consequences to whatever it is that i'm
about to do
so the roshiva gave like a lot of
examples right
but one of the things that fear
hopefully this type of fear
should generate would be greater
alertness
and a lot of energy to move forward okay
and he even says that you know this is
going to get your blood
running through your veins if you have a
true sense
of year okay we're going to now
not even translate it as sphere although
we're going to call let's call it let's
call it what it is
it's urine it's being able to see the
consequences
and have your blood running through your
veins
being alive which brings me to the next
idea
and that is what really is life itself
what did god
give us this life on this planet for
this 120 years
to make free choices he gave us free
will
this is the greatest gift that he could
have given us
so that when we could and will earn
what we call the world to come it's
through our free will
through the choices that we make so
just i just want to talk about this idea
because we are created
in the image of god and if i ask anybody
if i ask you what does it mean
god has no body he has no limbs he's
he's not physical in any sense so how is
it that we're creating is
in his image so i just want to go
through a little bit idea
that in hebrew the word for an image
like if i make a shadow i hold my hand
up to the light
so i look down at the ground i see an
image of my hand
is it my hand no it's like an
echo it's like it's
how do i say it it's not really my hand
right but it's an image of my hand
but it's not my hand so if we're created
in the image of god
that makes us not god it's very
important to know we're not god
real but the image
there's some kind of an image right that
is not physical right that shadow
i don't think we can call a shadow
necessary something physical but in
hebrew the word for
shade is sail the
the the word used in the torah when god
says he's going to create us
in his image it's the word selem
right it's very interesting concept in
fact a camera
is called a mat slayma because it
captures an image
right it's not a it's not the actual
thing
that is being captured but it's an image
that's being captured
so we are created in the image of god
the image of god
is i'm gonna it's nothing new here
it's the free will that he gave us okay
he's the ultimate in free will beyond
what we can imagine
uh having free will but he instilled a
like i said that shadow of an image
that's what we have that's what we are
because god is not obviously not
physical
so this is the most important thing so
one of the ideas we're going to get into
and we're going to deal with the
gomorrah bronchos 33b but i just want to
say it now and go through some of the
material and then we're going to get
back to this gemara
and that is the statement that says
everything is in the hand
of heaven except for the fear of heaven
meaning what that he gave it over to us
he gave it to us okay so we're going to
talk about that later
um i just want to talk about like when
you
let's say you were given a one of these
prizes right to be on a show
where you get this shopping cart and
they say to you
you have 10 minutes to fill it
to the top i don't know it's almost even
beyond
you know the rim right as much as you
possibly can
so the fear and i'm going to use i
should say era right the fear that one
would have is they're going to miss
out on the more expensive items or the
items that they actually could use
wow as opposed to running around with
popcorn
because it's big bulky and light and
maybe quick to empty one particular
shelf but come on
how much of a waste of time so if i'm
going to try to tell you the fear that
one should have
i'm going to just tell you right now is
that they wasted their whole life
right they wasted that 10 minutes
running around the shopping market
they had the opportunity to to fill it
with i don't even know what
is it and valuable and useful
instead they filled it with sugary
cookies yeah or something
so when the bell rings the fear is that
you're going to waste
your time you're going to win you're
going gonna go down the wrong aisles
and you're gonna have to backtrack and
maneuver your way around just to get to
that which is really important and
that's gonna be the
fear that we're gonna talk about and
we're gonna talk about the difference
between
i know that uh you spoke about this in
your previous class
the fear of let's say punishment
that's not worth talking about
but it's called rome's
the fear this or remember we spoke about
all yesterday's thinking of something
greater than ourselves
in the same sense this year is also
going to be focused on romans
the greatness of god but the greatness
of god that we can achieve
that for the fear of not serving hashem
ah thank you robert
okay so we're going to get into that so
i'll just
mention a statement that he writes
living with fear means recognizing that
life has so much to offer
you want to make sure you don't miss out
and end up with a cart load of soap suds
this is after he discusses the idea of
running around a supermarket on a
10-minute grab and
so basically you're afraid of not
reaching your potential
okay that's going to be the bottom line
now he goes through certain
misconceptions and i want to go through
them because i think they're very
important
one misconception is that fear is
painful
well it's not comfortable fear is not
comfortable right
you're going with that shopping cart
it's not a comfortable feeling knowing
that you may
miss the opportunities of a lifetime
okay
but um what do people naturally do
right they they do whatever they can to
avoid
pain right if they think that fear is
painful they'll do everything to avoid
it
however we do know that people pay a lot
of money to do bungee jumping to run out
to jump out of airplanes with parachutes
to uh moving a roller coaster ride
whatever you don't go to a horror movie
right people spend money so yes it may
be uncomfortable
but you have to know that it's not
painful right fear should not be
painful it's going to be uncomfortable
it's fine
but what it open up ultimately does
it would open your own eyes to seeing
the significance of your choices
and help motivate you to push you beyond
your comfort zones right i
mentioned this like back in the last few
years where they're talking about on
campuses having comfort zones
or this idea i don't know exactly what
it means but basically nobody ever
became great
in a comfort zone right you have to go
you have to push your limits
another misconception is that fear is
paralyzing
we spoke about we spoke about this a lot
as we went through some of the other 48
ways
or it could have been that i spoke about
this in my shari trouba
uh class about fear as well that
sometimes we think
wrongly again if it's the wrong kind of
fear it can be paralyzing
but really fear should motivate you
right how do we know
how do we know some people god forbid
they we've heard the stories of
um you know where a car was on a jack
meaning someone was changing a tire or
was working underneath the car
and the jack went and somebody came by
and with superhuman strength is able to
lift the car off it's because of the
fear of the impending consequences god
forbid someone should die or
be um what's paralyzed for you know
you you you quickly do what you need to
do
how about if someone offered you 25 000
to do something right you said no no i'm
not really interested but all of a
sudden when soon they offered you 25 000
you're ready to go right because you
fear losing such a large amount of money
so you get the strength to do whatever
it is
so it doesn't have to be paralyzing it
can actually be liberating
and fear there's another misconception
people think that
fear means a lack of freedom it's a
little bit harder to explain
but basically it gives you the freedom
to attain the greatness
that you actually do desire like so
fear of god actually becomes freedom
from nonsense
let me just give you an idea the
the idea for um the ten commandments
were engraved
the word for engraving is
um cake okay to gray
to engrave it also means
the me also means law so there's a
there's a parallel between something
that's
engraved and the law itself okay
but the the the idea i want to give to
is the the the
the word for freedom is
and the word another word for engraving
the same
idea of carving out cocaic is also
haroot so it's through the engraving
on the ten commandments the meaning the
tablets that
contain the the the commandments is
is the same root the same word for
freedom
and as broke hashem those who man who
are married should know and realize by
now
that having constraints right having
you know borders right thank god in
marriage you did you create borders for
yourself and your and you're you're
interested in your family
that that actually opens up a whole new
avenue
for freedom and intimacy
okay so basically fear will leave you
unencumbered it should actually
create uh freedom fear should create
freedom as opposed to what we think that
it means
a lack of freedom and
some think that fear is demeaning like
you don't want to be a servant
and i get it um but
to truly serve hashem that's where we're
going to go into this
to truly serve hashem properly and
you have to have that all this is going
to be like it's called a prerequisite
or in preparation for truly serving
hashem properly
this is going to be a prerequisite so
we're going to get into that whole idea
there's run a ship surely yeah um so now
that i got rid of all the
uh what you call it uh misconceptions
how about um
the main thing here is gonna be you sh
you should be afraid of meaninglessness
in other words if we're trying to
release the true potential it really
matters
so then if i said to you or i try to get
you to say
dan i want you to say to me i'm totally
happy being mediocre
can you say it not with a clean
conscience
okay so really the ultimate human fear
is to leave
live without meaning right
we should be afraid of being mediocre be
afraid of not living a meaningful life
be afraid of waking up in the morning
and say to yourself
what did i do with my life can you
imagine
so hopefully this will this is the idea
of
one of the ways to acquire wisdom
is to have this i'm gonna i just call it
healthy fear so we have to get into it
and what does it mean
and you know i know you spoke about this
verse i don't want to get to it yet but
i'll tell it now
this you can find in uh psalms chapter
it's the last verse of this whole
chapter
it's um psalms 111
verse 10.
we want you to read it you i'll read it
the beginning of wisdom is the fear of
the lord
reishi's hashem
so a good understanding to all who
performed them
hilato o met us live and his praise will
stand forever
so this is like from the verse it sounds
like it's a prerequisite
and there is a statement in perchando's
chapter 3 verse
mission 11 anyone whose fear of sin
precedes his wisdom
we had a freeze i hope he's all right
uh-oh got a poor network on his end if
you want to hang on there folks
uh yeah i really enjoy that verse he was
just sharing out of uh
psalms chapter 11 verse 10. oh we got
you back rabbi
i'm sorry we had a freeze for a second
with a poor connection there
okay did everyone hear the verse psalms
uh 111
verse 10 the beginning of wisdom is the
fear of the lord good understanding to
all who perform them
his praise endures forever and then you
started to share a couple of things and
then boom it locked up
all right so we all know that fear of
sin avoids
means avoiding doing things that are
that have forbidden undertones
so fear of sin precedes wisdom
means that the motivation for all a
person's
learning in in that his torah study is
motivated and motivated by his fear of
sin
he will know how to fulfill mitzvos
properly
and thus how to avoid even the slightest
form of sin
so in other words you're approaching
your torah learning because you really
want to serve
hashem properly the bottom line it's
going to be we're going to talk about it
surely
and maybe i'll talk about it now maybe
i'll go into the verse
in isaiah 33 verse 6.
isaiah 33
33 where are you
[Music]
oh i'm in 32 next
verse 6 and the faith of your time shall
be the strength of salvations
wisdom knowledge fear of the lord that
is his treasure
okay so this i want to try to bring this
verse
like not just home not just bring it
home
but bring it down to a level that we can
try to understand it
so what do we understand that the fear
of hashem
involves yourselves in the pursuit of
wisdom and knowledge of god
this will save you from the difficulties
from difficulties thus assuring you the
peace for all time this is what hashem's
message is
now um i want to tell you when this
verse was said by isaiah
he prophesized this if you look in
chapter 32 he's talking to
his kiaw about the the northern tribes
being run away by
sanchez now central is not finished he's
coming down to yehudah
so he's giving um strength to hezekiah
in the face of this incoming assault by
the assyrians by
saint gerard and
so um
so he's giving him strength he wants to
give him
wisdom now something about the prophets
you should know
the prophets never revealed anything
that wasn't already known they came to
give rebuke
okay and what is already known means
it's within the revelation it's in the
five books
of the torah now we have a written torah
and we also have an oral torah so one of
the lessons here by the way the gemara
shabbos 31a
mentions that these six nouns
i'll tell you what they are the word
faith
the word times the word strength the
word salvations the word wisdom
and the word knowledge those six i'll
just read the verse
the faith in your times will be the
strength of your salvations
wisdom and knowledge okay i'm going to
skip the last few words fear of hashem
that is man's treasures for a second
that those six words represent the sixth
sader
siddhuri mishnah we have in our
oral torah six specific
parts thank you
and how they relate is like this the
word
faith right the faith that's referring
to what we call
zeroin the book of seeds by the way the
only
book the only the only um gemara that we
have from that in the babli
is brachot so you understand how that
relates to faith because
farmers if there are any farmers
watching
and today they have farmers almanac and
whatnot but basically you have to have a
lot of faith right you can do all the
work at the right time
expecting um a good crop but it's only
going to happen as a result of
hashem's grace and having rain in its
right time at the right place in the
right amount
so you have to have a lot of faith when
it comes to seeds
to seeding and that's what the first
track that's with the first
uh sader of mishnah it says the second
word is
times times is relating to the festivals
right
shabbos is included by the way but all
the tractates that deal with the
festivals
that would fit in times now guess what
this
is going to make all the feminists very
happy um
the faith of your times will be the
strength what strength
that's the the seder gnashing
all the laws dealing with women because
they
are our strength and the
the the word deal with salvations the
satan are dealing with salvations
is um where do i have this here is
one second i'm doing this by memory i
have i have written down somewhere here
it is
and it does deals with damages
in other words when you go to court and
you have restoration
so salvations and restoration when you
have damages that's what you're going to
court
to to claim right restorations damages
and the other word is wisdom
wisdom is dealing with consecrated items
such as cutching
so there's a whole tract there's a whole
seder called kachin
and knowledge is dealing with purity and
that is um
taharat now after we got done i'm trying
to explain how
all of our earl torah fits into this the
six nouns of
of this verse it ends with the fear of
the lord is his
treasure so i hope you understand we're
talking about how to acquire wisdom
you need to have this oh
this year this uh fear
and that for some reason is god's
treasure
what does that mean so let me let me go
through this gemara let's say word for
word
so resh locker said what is the meaning
of our verse
and the faith of your times would be the
strength of salvation wisdom and
knowledge
the fear of the lord is his treasure so
it goes through everything i just said
faith is destroying seeds because a
person has
faith in god and plants his seeds
your times that's dealing with the moed
the festivals
which deals with the various occasions
and festivals that occur throughout the
year
strength that's the order of gnashing
women
salvations that's the order of nazekan
damages
as one being pursued is rescued from the
hands of this pursuer
hopefully through the court system
wisdom
that's the order of kadosh kaching the
consecrated items
and knowledge that's the order of
taharat purity
which is particularly difficult to to
master so you need a lot of knowledge
even if a person studies and masters all
of these right let's say
yeah they have a good brain it's not
enough
the fear of the lord is his treasure it
is preeminent
it is such a necessity now that's where
i want to go
into some of the comments on this gemara
so here we go
let me just see if i'm in the right
place
no i'm in a different gamora that is i'm
sorry
there is more dimensions yes okay this
is actually
in bronchos 33b okay
so this is back to the original thing
i'm not sure if i actually went through
this
i wanted to
let's go to sorry let's go to 33b
this is a different different from all
together
so the gemura makes a statement uh by
rebbi khanina
concerning the principles of faith rebbe
kanina says
everything is in the hands of heaven
this is the verse i started off with
everything in is in the hands of heaven
except for the fear of heaven
and how do we know that right if you go
deuteronomy chapter 10 verse
12.
you want to read it for us yep pulling
it up deuteronomy 10
verse 12 says and now o israel
what does the lord your god ask of you
only to fear the lord your god to walk
in all his ways and to love him
and to worship the lord your god with
all your heart and with all your soul
now what does it seem it seems like
there's only you have to read the hebrew
though the
israel now israel
ma is going to play a very important
word
means what
what exactly is god asking of you
could mean a request but we're going to
see the difference between the word
i'm sorry the word which means to borrow
and which means to request just keep
this in mind
what does god show ale ask
or bar ask of you
means only it's a how do i say it it
minimizes it's just
one thing that it's only
to fear god your lord but then the next
few phrases
seem to be what i call service right the
true services
to walk in all of his ways
and to love him
and to serve your lord lord your god the
call of
the holy entire heart and with your
entire soul
so the remark continues basically
and asked a very important question
because the word is two words but
it means like only and
when you say only at me it's minimizing
okay
trust me when you say only it's
minimizing correct
so the gemara is taking this as fact
is the fear of heaven such a small thing
that it's
such it's minimized
mean like this can it be that can it be
presented as if god is asking
nothing asking anything really
significant
but we know didn't rebecca is saying the
name of shimba yochai
and this is a very important statement
that the holy one blessed be he has
nothing in his treasury there's nothing
in god's treasury
except than a treasure of fear of god
so for some reason all of our fear of
hashem
of hashem is stored away
in god's treasury and it says in isaiah
6 which is um the verse we just read
right the faith of your times will be
the strength of your salvations wisdom
and knowledge fear of hashem
that is whose treasure that's his
treasure
yours hashem is his treasure the
question is okay
it's it was given to man right we said
it was given to man so
it's man's treasure but it's being saved
secured guarded in
god's treasury okay
why this is the question we're going to
deal with
um we're going on a a on a beautiful
drink
a beautiful journey
so um the fact that it
says the field of the lord
is his treasure it means that the lord
values and treasures the fear of heaven
over
everything else remember he gave us
free will and he says everything is in
my hands everything belongs to hashem
except for this like i said when it
comes to free will this
it's not okay i want to have chocolate
ice cream or vanilla ice cream
that's not what we're dealing with we're
talking about do
i want to have knowledge of the
greatness of god
and do i want to try to serve him and
imitate him and become as godly as i can
be
that's ultimately what this year because
we talked about
seeing the consequences of my actions is
it going to bring me closer
to my mission in life to my to having
meaning in life
or is it going to take me away to what
we call
counterfeit meaning right we think oh my
god if i can just get this
i don't know nothing letters after my
name and put a plaque on the wall or
gain some kind of the trophy or
attention in some way
that that would that's meaningful okay
so what's really truly meaningful
i just want to go through the rest of
the gemara because it asked
the truth is that yes it is a small
thing when it comes to
when it comes to um moshe
because moses had it and if you have it
it's a small thing but if you don't have
it
like god it's not
we're going to talk about the fact that
he put it in his treasury because it was
very dear to him
because he gave it to us it was no
longer
you know bound in his sphere
of course he's the ultimate in free will
but nevertheless
year at sherman was not something that
he needs and therefore he gave it to us
okay let's uh basically so ruby kanina
stated
it's comparable to one who asked for a
large vessel
let's say i came to you and asked you
for a large uh
large vessel and you actually had one
the way that you give it to me is like
if you have it so it's like
to you it's a small vessel because you
have it but if i came to someone for
even a small vessel and you don't have
it it would seem to you like a large
vessel
okay this is very much common sense
so in hashem's eyes it's considered very
large
and voluminous and volumable it's like
it's considered a lot in hashem's eyes
the reason i wanted to speak about this
word ma
in the verse remember it's we're in
deuteronomy chapter 10 verse 12.
it says what does hashem show el mi
i just want to talk about the word
there's four letters
so a the first two letters if you just
switch them around it's
means power but it also means
potential right it means potential
ma means what
i just wanted i mentioned next week
we're going to talk about another
another means humility
so the power to say ma that's what
wisdom is the power to say
what i don't understand
wow this must be mom what is this must
be bigger than me
you follow where i'm going with this
it's awesome yeah
it's just awesome the word
el is when you
borrow okay if i borrow something from
you
i'm a i'm a showail
if i request something from you
oh so let's talk about like this let's
say i give a loan
when i give a loan so i give you
greenbacks i give you money
i'm not going to print my name on them
because i don't expect those same
bills to be returned to me those are to
be used you're going to invest them or
pay off a loan i don't know whatever i
don't i don't care what you're using it
for
but i don't expect as a loan
to get back what i gave you
i i expect a equivalent
but it'll be different bills
if i lend you my my watch because you're
going on a
i don't know an important business
meeting and you have to wear this watch
where i lend you my car i expect to get
my car back
so this is going to have a lot of um
implications
in terms of the mitzvot itself because
the reward for a mitzvah
what is what do we know that the
impercal vote you guys are learning
what's the reward of a mitzvah another
mitzvah
another another myth so here let's go
through this um
some of the comments now i want to just
read through the gamora a little
literally
uh word for word in there actually we
did that
let's say the comments then
you know what i'm going to read it from
the hebrew and translate it because i
just read the english very quickly but
uh basically rebecca nina said
hakobi deshame everything is in the
hands of heaven
meaning that everything was
a cult of our hobo everything that comes
to mind
everything that we humankind experience
for example whether we're tall or we're
short
whether we're poor or we're rich
whether we have wisdom
whether i'm sorry whether i'm smart or
i'm not smart
whether i'm white or i'm black it's not
coming from any effort on my part
ain't no bone marrow rather everything
is
nick everything is coming
as a set it's established already
by the will of hashem except for yerat
shamayim except for what we call the
sphere of
heaven
sadiq rasha that it's not given over by
the hand of god
if the person is going to be righteous
or not
this is entirely up to me
that's the bottom line everything with
them rich or poor right
everything like that is is not decided
by me it doesn't matter how much i try
if it's already been established except
for one thing the only thing
that has not been decided whether i'm
gonna be righteous or not
because the kardash
god gave this over to man this is what
we call free will
vanessa in the fun of he put before
him two options and the one
is to fear god that's what he wants you
to choose
and that's the verse we read in in
deuteronomy chapter 10 verse 12
and now based on that you can review it
if you want
and we understand from the language that
god is so el
he's asking from man only one thing
well it sounds like it's only one thing
rock your shamayim the voters hashem
to do two things it says one thing but
okay
what is it that he should fear heaven
and serve god for example
kagon i'm sorry kayvon since rock came
to louis vuitton
this this is the only thing that depends
on free will of man
and has nothing to do with any
um decree from on high
so the gomorrah asks based on the word
ki-im okay
remember i said means to minimize
so the gemara s regarding this verse
is it not the language of motion this is
moses own words
he says right in deuteronomy it's moses
speaking
it's only to fear god which implies
that it's something very small it's
having
fear of heaven seems like it's a muat
muant means something very small and um
it only that is what god asked to do so
the gomura asked is that really true
could it be that that fearing god is
something very small
the muat is it possible
so the gomorrah says rebecca nina in the
name of rabbi shimbarayan
the only thing that god has in his
treasury is
the fear of god and this is answering
the question that it's not small it's
not small in god's eyes
it's something big because it said in
isaiah 33
6 that the fear of hashem is his
treasure that is his treasure
so this proves that fear of god is not
small
so that's how it answered okay it's
small promotion because he has it
whereas hashem he doesn't have it it's
not in heaven
it's already given to man so it's
something very
much treasured by karish barku himself
i wanted to go to a venue
that i thought was very interesting
because this is going to segue
into the idea of humility
which i think i already did segway to a
certain extent by saying
ma so here it goes
this is the daniel da on prophets 33 b
that the karishbaraku does not have in
his treasury
except a safe full of your shamayim
alone
so there's to ask lubazza what is um so
negative about this what is her what's
extracted i'm not really sure
michelle can mean one or the other but
like what's so
what's so detrimental about this is a
good thing a bad thing
and furthermore lamar obeys gonna solve
why does it say in his treasury
so he begins by answering the question
as he always does it seems to me with
the help of hashem to be able to answer
this
that it's well known that there's two
types of fear
one is called yirasa ownish that's fear
of
punishment and that's considered garuwa
this is a very low level
whereas the other is called yirus
haramus this is something
you're fearing the majesty or grandeur
of hashem roma moose
i i put down a few different definitions
it could mean
majesty grander evolation elevation
okay so this fears the grander majesty
of hashem and that's
bachat that's considered very
praiseworthy as opposed to fear of
punishment and this idea of roman moose
this idea of fear of the grander
is mitsuy the cult of ashamayam
this is found this is very common by all
the angels
and all the heavenly hosts they have
this
right they have it they don't have free
will
it's so clear to them
and that's why when we talk about this
idea fear of heaven
we're talking about the fear that the p
that the the angels have
the fear that um the heavenly bodies
have
that's the fear that we're talking about
that fear that the heavenly host have
that's years from roman
that's the fear that they have that's
the fear that we should have on us
that's the goal we should have the fear
the all the clarity
that the angels the angelic forces have
um
someone who doesn't have the i guess
recognition he they can't decipher the
difference between this type of fear
which is fear of punishment versus the
fear of
the grandeur of hashem
sorry let me rephrase that that the only
person the only
entity that can have the true knowledge
of who is a real believer meaning who
has real
era between fear of punishment
and fear of the grandeur is only krishna
himself because qidabra is a muslim
because this whole idea of knowing the
difference is sitting right here in your
heart
right you may act all fearful
but you may be just acting out of the
fear of punishment
but maybe you're acting out of the all
of god guess what
there's only one entity that knows the
truth and that's
god himself even the angels
cannot read and recognize the heart
it's only hashem who knows what's hidden
in the heart
and that's what it means when the only
thing that god has in his treasury is
specifically this
it's his treasury nobody else has this
he allah it's by him it's revealed to
him it's known
just this storehouse of what we call the
fear of heaven
meaning to say the year is haramus
no heges bisho the type of fear of the
grandeur of god
that's accustomed amongst the angels
in heaven does that man have that or not
[Music]
inaudible that
everything is in the hands of heaven
except for this year chamayang
because nimsa called niggs our bid where
everything is decreed by god's
word and it's only year
it's only this fear that remains the
sharkness territory limited the only
thing that's totally hidden
because the word is for treasury is good
news
good news means hidden away
it's hidden away oh god is the only one
that knows
the gazero together
because this is treasured to him
right because of the idea that man chose
it
and it didn't come out in other words
god has no
abilities let's say over your decision
to be righteous or not okay this is
totally
what he gave over to you and it does
it's not a decree
from hashem everything else in this
universe
is a total decree from hashem but he
decreed free will on man
and therefore it's up to you
now the question the gomorrah asked was
is it really
that your mind is such a small thing
that was the question
asked hello
they don't even ask the gomorrah did not
ask for the verse itself
which bothered the the ben yoda this is
the banished high
so he answers of course as he always
does nearly
it seems to me with the help of heaven
to answer this question
you know what is it not to explain the
word ma
as actually a noun it's a thing and what
is this thing
it's another that is the actual concept
of humility
that is called ma right we talked about
the word
ma it's the ma the power of what
the power of being able to ask what
right
to have humility
this is like a prerequisite in order to
get to
another which is humility you have to
have jira
nava to be a balance you need to have
this or this fear
has
because to be actually complete with the
the attribute of humility you you well
how do you read this that's the question
be this another
yasi if you want to complete you want to
become
perfect in humility you have to be able
to reach
yeera first year
but he says really you know what fear is
actually greater
we're just dealing with this idea that
everything is in the hand of heaven and
that's why it's talking about it like
this
and you can actually learn it from that
verse that what does it say
in the foreign
again i said is borrowing
and expect the same thing back which is
you you're doing a mitzvah you'll you'll
it's actually something small because we
said ma
ma is humility and something that's
humble
is considered muat something very small
and that's what he's asking from you to
be small
okay velodover maruba not something a
lot
now there was still a few more comments
that i wanted to go through and
just hopefully there's just so much
beauty
and gorgeous wonderful rabbi
okay i'm gonna go through some of these
we have some time
and by the way this verse in deuteronomy
deuteronomy chapter
10 verse 12 right that's what we're
dealing with yes sir
was told over by moshe as rebuke before
he died
now after he already rebuked them about
the sin of the golden calf
and that he didn't want them to return
to egypt
this is all after aaron had died
oh i know i skipped one important thing
about the ma
just to show you that let me just find
the verse
it's in chapter 16 of exodus
chapter 16 of exodus verse 7
and in the morning you will see the
glory of god when he hears your
complaints against the lord but of what
significance are we
that you make the people complain
against us in the hebrew
at the very end
what significance are we
what are we we are nothing just to get
understand what
ma really means okay i wanted to not
skip that okay
okay back to this idea that this whole
um
rebuke in
[Music]
deuteronomy 10 verse 12. he said to them
even though you did all these wrong
things with the golden calf
wanting to go back to egypt right guess
what
god still loves you and he has
mercy towards you the name of
your mind that's the only thing that
hashem requests of you
is just to have gira towards hashem
that's the only thing
that is what the verse is asking in
other words we're i'm trying to
you know nail it down this is one of the
ways
towards wisdom and god says this is all
i want from you
and you know rashi in the torah
explains on this verse that the intent
is
not by rebecca nina that it's only your
chimayan
but oh if you read the verse
all these different types were ideas
behind serving hashem they're mentioned
in the verse
right let's go through the verse again
right
now israel what does hashem require
viewer ask of you
only to fear hashem great and then it
says
and to go in all of his ways and to love
him and to serve him
with all of your heart and with all of
your soul so we see the
idea towards servants of hashem which
brings us full circle
what does this all is that i should not
just fear hashem but includes
any way that i could reach my potential
in serving hashem
yes that's just due to my lack of hebrew
understanding i mean
i'm on the chabad site you know reading
this and uh the word for service they
use the word worship
and to uh worship the lord your god with
all your heart soul and might
and can you just help me to understand
the the the connection in the hebrew
language between the words
the english words worship and serve yeah
i'm going to i'll try
thank you sir i'm sorry i i mean you
look
you look in the dictionary right
every word i i tell my students every
word has at least eight meanings
at least i should say every word
almost every word you can only get it
from context
right and evid a servant and a slave
is in heaven the same root
a voter should believe what the torah
itself calls and
what we call the act of serving in the
temple is a voda
it's the same today in modern hebrew of
oda means labor it just means to work
so you have to know the context
but let's say avodah zarah right
strange worship so is it
in the halachic sense uh it's
four ways that we serve hashem there are
four specific ways that we serve hashem
and if you serve a different power
with these four ways that's called a
vodazara where if you serve hashem in
any
in any way but these four ways it's
called evodazar strange worship
strange okay so i don't know if i'm
answering your question
um why did they translate worship
listen how do i serve hashem my worship
is not just sitting
in a synagogue and doing what they call
worship
right when i help the old lady across
the street when i reach into my pocket
to give money
when i sit there and hold my tongue and
not uh speak
in hara that's all service of hashem
right
that's a jew doesn't you know it's not
just
prayer the gomorrah even asked what is a
voter shabalith a devoted
lady is prayer but it's not restricted
to that
it's all kinds of loving hashem and
fearing hashem and
right so it's worship it's not just
physically
bowing and praying okay
so so those four ways you you mentioned
those four ways
again is that out of this verse is that
that's what they were
i didn't mention what they were because
i hope i can remember what they are
right the idea of bowing the idea of
slaughtering animals is
called carbonate right
incense if i'm not did i say prayer let
me go through them again
what are they i can look them up real
quick but basically like incense
sacrifices um bowing and
prayer they might be the same um but
there are four
bases now i know where to find it sir
yep
thank you so much rabbi any of those
uh to a different deity
so that's that's a vodazara or if you
serve hashem
in any other way but these four that's a
vodazora
bingo thank you sir
okay um
another point that the truth is
that hashem is
that god really requests only this idea
of the era
the idea that through the era
we will reach the other attributes that
are
spoken about in the verse because
mitzvah gore mitzvah the
one mitzvah drags another mitzvah so if
you can get yira down
you'll be able to let the code to go in
all his ways to love him and to serve
him
or you say worship him with all of your
heart and with all of your soul
another idea i think i already mentioned
this
that this was prophet isaiah
prophesizing about the fall of saint
that he was saying to the jewish people
that they should fear hashem
and that the fear of hashem is god's
treasure
that through it they will be assured
victory
and live in peace for a long time in
their land
um
another idea brought down that the
reason the gemura brings in the very
beginning the words of ruby canina
and doesn't ask on the verse itself is
because
from the verse it was allows you to
explain
a concept called yira to the eats that
would be fear of sin
and fear of sin if you just looked at
the simple shot anytime it talks about
fear
you may think it's just talking about
fear of i should say fear of punishment
sorry
fear of punishment you think it's the
fear of punishment because that's what
people have when they think of fear
but once it says it's a double muad it's
something very small
so perhaps the words of rebecca nina is
inferring that the actual verse is not
talking about something very small
it because we explain that it's in
hashem's treasure
so that your shamayim is something
sickly it's not
a it's something very spiritual it's not
something very
base and physical fear of punishment
because that's what fear of punishment
is
it's very basic and physical but fear of
romanus fear of the incredible greatness
of god and grandeur of hashem
is something very much more spiritual
and that's what we're speaking about
here columbus years
what you're fearing is the grander the
the high level
and the greatness of hashem himself
[Music]
okay i think i spoke the other ones out
already
and maybe we'll uh i i have just too
many notes i know if i get started i'll
never end
i think this is a good introduction to
getting into next week which is called
another
and uh humility and i think i pretty
much segued right into it with
uh with some interesting ideas so
bizarre to sham
we'll get into this uh next week so
would that mean next week is like a 6b
or or would that be a part seven rabbi
it's number seven
we finished six although i have a
a lot more to say on it but we'll leave
it for now
uh number seven by the way next week
it's called anova humility and this
hashem that'll bring us into the
following one called joy
simcha so i don't know maybe maybe i can
try to put two in one
two classes in one i don't know we'll
try
i have to really start with just find so
many treasures i want to share
well i hope i didn't divert you or
distract you in any way with a couple of
questions today
you really poked on some points that
were useful
uh not useful helpful uh in my
my growth and uh thank you rabbi they're
beautiful i i appreciate you staying up
so late to share this
the beauty of this this course with us
so
hashem willing we're on for next week
yeah i know this is being discussed
amongst nochites
they say some of them say look it's just
um
we just have to do our bit and keep the
world going we don't have to delve into
so much
jewish stuff like i don't know what
jewish stuff they're talking about
jewish wisdom they should definitely
check out right
jewish rituals okay i get it right
but wisdom your whole basis fruit is
believing
hopefully i shouldn't say if you want to
be a righteous gentile
it's believing in the revelation of
sinai it's believing that the jews have
a mission
it's supporting them in their mission
you're required to give a lot up
in a certain sense maybe socially
you know giving up your churches and
whatnot maybe that's simple
more simple but it's called
world view to become more familiar with
the jewish worldview because
you are and i know i'm going to get a
lot of trouble for this
you are part of right the jewish
i'm not gonna say jewish people i'm not
say jewish religion but i do mean that
you are you have adopted
judaism as your worldview and that
even the diamonds made with coal
whether you are in the process of
converting or in the process of trying
to decide whether you convert
or in the process of just checking it
out not knowing where you're going with
this
you should become as familiar as
possible with what we call jewish
wisdom and what i shared with you
tonight and i know riley kaufman does as
well perkier vote
this is jewish wisdom and when i say
jewish it's not for the jews this is the
wisdom that the jews are supposed to
share with the world much of it
much of it so i don't know what people
are so afraid of i saw some of the
comments on some of the other videos
that you have and
people are comments that um
up in arms no these rabbis they only
know about judaism they don't know
anything about noah hyde
i don't know where they come up with
such a uh a sweeping statement like that
um we know about jews we know about
judaism okay we know i'm saying
everybody knows a little bit different
some know
history much better some no kabbalah
some no some no right there's all these
different
um branches of wisdom
that one should become i think
as familiar maybe the halacha part
less so if you are i mean look there's
you've heard my introduction to the the
um
the beyond the seven there's so many
that actually apply to the nocheide
you know and you know when i say
especially about courts of justice and
damages and all kinds of you know things
to do with torts
and those kind of laws especially you
need to know the laws of abortizara
a foreign worship yeah you have to you
have to
you know and the laws of murder right
laws of stealing all these things are
necessary so how are you going to learn
i mentioned earlier right and this is a
controversial subject
are non-jews allowed to learn torah and
i've come to the
absolute conclusion yes and no
yes you
are a non-believer you don't you have
not accepted this
you then you're really limited in what
you're what we're allowed to teach you
what you're allowed to learn i'm sorry
to say
um because you may use it against us you
know
we have many many detractors and if
you're out to try to prove us wrong
stay away go home you know but if you're
interested in learning because you
either are thinking about converting or
you're already on the on the on the way
it's almost unlimited what you can learn
what about the person in between they
have so much the bed no
then they not have so much to learn just
for themselves
the scripture is certainly open and all
the peru shame all the explanations
which is quite a lot trust me there's so
much to learn
so you're almost like wow i don't know
some
they think they're limited there's like
of the torah is open to you you know
what i mean there's just a few things
that may uh
not affect you or relate to you at all
there's so much to learn so my
i'm encouraging you i i beg you right if
you're on the path
continue on the path stay strong
continue to learn there's so much to
learn
whether no matter where you are on the
spectrum
and don't be discouraged hang tough
okay so much rabbi you're so encouraging
beautiful words today and
i think maybe we just ended at that and
i look forward to
this class it's just wonderful so hashem
willing we'll see you next week
[Music]
is
