everybody
love me because
hey good day everybody welcome back to
beyond the seven life from Jerusalem
with Rabbi Aaron David Poston
um where we've been doing a wonderful
series on tomor devorah which has to do
with the the 13 attributes of hashem's
mercy and today we're on Part 12 so if
you haven't caught them all you can go
back into no high World Center uh feed
and uh find the tomor devorah we've done
them every two or three weeks
um uh it's always a joy to be uh
with the rabbi Poston in Jerusalem he's
such a busy fellow and got such
beautiful things to share and I'm really
enjoying this series and from what he's
been telling me we've got a great one
today so let's just jump right in and
see how the rabbi's doing Shalom Rabbi
post and uh you're are live on the air
we're going to turn it over to you sir
to all your subscribers Watchers now and
those who are watching later
so that's everybody all over the world I
guess it's still Shabbos somewhere in
the world it's Saturday night 11 30 here
in Jerusalem
and it was a beautiful day great Shabbos
got to see my daughters one flew in from
the stage the other one came up from Tel
Aviv I had a grandson born and
um yeah brisp was about to channels
tomorrow
thank you thank you
okay so we by the way so we're in number
12 meet a twelver the attribute the 12th
attribute of the 12 of the 13 attributes
of Mercy again like you said it's
worthwhile seeing from the beginning for
those who have no idea what we're
talking about I'll just give like a
minute and a half summary just get a so
we can get going because we have a lot
of um of Homer a lot of material to
cover in a short period of time and I
think that we're going to go very late
so it's already 11 32 P.M
okay so just an idea and a minute and a
half
um summary in uh right after the golden
calf incident the center of the golden
calf Moses prays for our forgiveness
Hashem grants it and he says anytime you
get caught up in sin this is what you
need to do you need to not just say them
but actually incorporate
God says follow my ways just as Hashem
is Mercy so too we should be merciful
this actually brings such Shepherd down
such abundance of Mercy into the world
when we emulate God's attributes of
mercy and we're basing this now on the
prophet uh chapter 7 where he towards
the end of uh of Mika he describes these
13 attributes of Mercy in a little bit
of a different phraseology but they're
basically the same as we know none of
the prophets come to that they you're
not allowed to invent a new religion
what they have done and what they do
it's very rabbinical of them is to uh
explain what the five books of Moses is
saying this we're referring back to
Exodus chapter 33 so here in Mika
chapter seven it's a deeper
understanding of what has already been
granted the Jewish people
uh when we were in the desert
so
this one is called
as you swore to our forefathers now just
like to put in context number 10 and 11
it's good to also give a little bit of
review
so number 10 was Titan Ms liyakov giving
truth to yaakov and number 11 was
granting to avraham so these were
dealing with other people now for us
Jews we're talking about mainly how we
deal with Jews but it actually applies
to all you know how we interact with
other people as well but giving true to
yaakov was basically people who just
followed the law they don't go beyond
the law and by the way this is called
beyond the seven because we here believe
that even though there are seven
principles and therefore seven Noah laws
for the non-jews nevertheless as I
mentioned rabbin Nissim many others
believe and they understand that any
amidst them in the Torah that is logical
or ethical a non-jew is obligated to
follow but not necessarily in the same
strictness and the same details as Jews
but to at least follow the spirit yeah
make the world a better place sure yes
right those laws so there are people who
just follow the Commandments and don't
go beyond the letter of the law
nevertheless even though measure for
measure God would normally behave with
them in the same fashion they they
behave nevertheless Hashem shows that
mercy and goes beyond the letter of the
law with them and number 11
because avraham and exemplified such
hasid so that people who are do go
beyond the letter of the law we have to
act even more merciful towards them show
them even more kindness so dumb number
one to those of our let's just say
people we have problems with difficult
people people we interact with even
though they are not hasidim let's say
they're not Pious they don't go beyond
the letter of the law nevertheless we
should treat them with a lot more
respect than they deserve and number two
number 11 was for those who do exemplify
and go beyond the letter of law of
course we have to so now what is what
does it mean as Hashem swore to our
forefathers
what is it that he swore to our
forefathers now a non-jew could be
sitting there well what does that have
to do with me I hope through this
session we'll have a better idea what
perhaps Mazel means okay that means the
let's say fate constellations and what
nature brings you and how you can change
your muzzle
and as we do know I should say hopefully
many of the people who are watching this
understand that the higher level noahide
meaning there are wise amongst the
Nations and there's the pious amongst
the Nations
the wise ones figured out these seven
laws based on only logic not necessarily
because God commanded not necessarily
because they even have or want a
relationship with God but they just
whatever I mean it's really hard to
believe how someone can really follow
these laws and not believe in God but
let's just say they figured that they're
not on their own they don't believe
necessarily in the revelation of Mount
Sinai now even though the six Mitzvahs
were given to Adam and a seventh was
given to knock they were repeated at
Mount Sinai and it was there that the
obligation really fell as a you know a
continued obligation
on all mankind because it was expressed
by God at Mount Sinai
so knowing that if some people just see
it as a just way to live you know a uh a
balanced way uh a civil way well if
that's the way they look at it which I
think is great but the truth is they
start only yeah
if they live that their whole lives like
that and they don't change they will not
necessarily be rewarded in the world to
come but at least they will get some
reward in this com this world and
perhaps they kept the world from you
know falling apart and disintegrating
because that's not what God wants he
doesn't want the world to disintegrate
and fall apart but he really does want
to give you the greatest reward possible
so you have these seven principles these
seven laws to follow but if you follow
them because you know that there was a
revelation of Mount Sinai God commanded
you
and also you have a relationship with
the Jewish people which is going to be
key in this in this uh um lesson because
recognizing that there is a and this is
like a dirty word
a chosenness a unique relationship that
the Jewish people have with God
and as Dan and I were discussing
beforehand the idea that you're gleaning
the wisdom you're taking the Bible the
the Jewish Bible the scriptures
seriously and you realize I mean come on
the Book of Genesis basically the
creation of of the Jewish nation and
then you have Exodus the unbelievable
you know Miracles that took place until
Mount Sinai itself and the beginning of
the construction of the Tabernacle you
have Leviticus which is all about the
coinim and basically the Jewish people
are as God says a uh
a holy nation but a a kingdom of priests
so we are the priests of the Nations and
then you have numbers which is basically
well let's say
Leviticus I mentioned is all about the
Priestly um
uh activities inside the temple and then
you have about midvar numbers which is
really the 38-year history most of it is
dealing with the history of the and and
different laws and then finally the last
30 days uh 37 days of Moses's life
you're dealing with
um Deuteronomy so if you believe the
Bible if you believe it just for you
know at uh you know simple shot uh face
value you understand that there is a
unique special relationship that the
Jewish people have so we're saying God
swore to the Jewish
forefathers Abraham Isaac and Jacob
something
and if you as a non-jew well let's say
let's start with as a Jew and that's
really what we're going to talk about
tonight mostly
um that there's a unique relationship of
forgiveness and Grace
undeserved reward and if we look at the
Jews as a Jewish I I guess it's a little
easier for me maybe I don't maybe it's
harder for me but if we all look and
recognize that the Jews actually have a
special place and we should right right
tell me if you right God says to avraham
and later on to the Jews right those who
bless you will be blessed so there's a
mission involved yeah take this
seriously so you can change your Muzzle
you can change your relationship you
have with the Jewish people
by gleaning the wisdom the special
relationship that God has and you could
join in
whether it's a full-fledged convert
which we're not trying to convince
anybody to convert
it happens to be an option or to become
what we don't exactly have gertosha but
let's say the next level almost like a
gear toshav to the extent that you are
so enamored by the Jewish Community
either you want to live amongst them or
you want to associate with them or do
business with them or give charity to
them whatever it is uh in whatever
connection you have maybe it's just
through the Bible and you're learning
right many of you are probably sitting
and learning from rabbis all day long or
an hour a week or in five minutes a week
whatever it is your connection to the
Jewish people can change your muzzle
which we're going to get into get can
change your fate can change your success
can change your Prosperity can change
your can change your entire existence
okay so apparently God made a covenant
with the Jewish people that's big news
but before that at Mount Sinai he also
made a covenant
with Abraham Isaac and Jacob and it's
true he made that he made a covenant
with no with knock these are different
levels of commitment of Covenant
so God did swear to our forefathers so
let's start with the Thomas davara for
those just who are not familiar over my
left shoulder uh the the remark wrote
this about 500 years ago approximately
because anyway that's when he lived
and um he was a big kabbalist and spot
and you can listen to the introduction
to hear more about him so let's get into
the text
okay yes
right this is big news there are
actually people on this planet right out
of eight plus billion people some of
them are not acting properly right just
just you should know just in case you
didn't know that
Hashem has Mercy on everyone
that's already a big statement right
like I said I got a lot of material here
to go through
now we have a verse in um Exodus chapter
33 verse 19. so if you want to read the
English and then I'll focus on some of
the Hebrew words and Rashi
33 verse 19 Rabbi you said correct uh it
says he said I will let all my goodness
pass before you I will proclaim the name
of the Lord before you and I will favor
when I wish to favor and I will have
compassion when I wish to have
compassion
okay look this is very complicated and
we have to unfold we have to unwrap
there's so many layers of an onion here
God did say this to Moses to tell the
Jews when you're in trouble when you
want you have sin and you want to be
um
relieved we have troubles in general you
say this and this is a very
very special segula
we do say these constantly
um but it's not just saying them it's
actually incorporating them and
following these this part of the 13
attributes in this chapter
and this was like almost like an
introduction to that so in Hebrew it
says
that's the first part of what I want to
bring out I will show favor to him I
will show favor
and the latter part is
and I will have compassion to whom I
have compassion for
now really I have so many things in my
head I'm trying I'm gonna try my best to
give it to you in a very
um a clear order although I think I will
probably not do such a great job and I
want everyone to forgive me
for perhaps you know any mistakes
they're mine okay I have a lot of
material here
uh let's just find out what Rashi has to
say on this verse
so Rashi says
right in the beginning it says I will
let all my goodness pass before you so
what does that mean Rashi says the time
has come that you shall see some of my
glory that I will permit you to see
because I want and I need to teach you
the order of prayer because when you had
to beg for mercy for Israel you begged
me to remember the Merit of the
Patriarchs what is this we have to
unfold what does it mean there's Merit
of the Patriarchs
that the Jewish people and for that
matter even non-jews can somehow tap
into
the the they were righteous these people
Abraham Isaac and Jacob they were
unbelievably righteous and they earned
so much credit in the bank so to speak
and we're his descendants and we're not
on those levels and I don't know where
the non-jew is but perhaps they're also
not on that level
now
um I'm going to quote from
Rabbi I'm going to call him a doctor
also but uh Rabbi Dr Henry Abramson he
gave two examples of what does it means
in the Merit of our forefathers these
are illustrious ancestors of ours just
keep in mind avraham is Ava mongoim he
is the father of many nations you know
we have whether I don't even need to
mention the other religions but all the
religions of the world that are
somewhat you know helpful to the world
um
are you know coming through his seat
right even the ones to the Far East it
says he had six additional sons from
qataret or Hagar I hope you want to look
at it and he sent them to the East and
we had at that time uh Buddhism and
Hinduism anyway so all the world's
religions
to stem from you know the illustrious
avram himself
um okay so having that in mind that if
one Taps into this idea because it's
like unbelievable
I don't want to get too far ahead of
myself but I keep thinking of these
ideas to throw in so I'm going to throw
it in now and I'll have to talk about it
again later
like if somebody is from
you know a Jew to a Jew or maybe even
a person who belongs to any of the
others religions who claim that Abraham
is their spiritual father
so how can I disgrace that person
I would be disgracing our father
I mean this is already like getting into
where we're going with this
having Mercy on people who are not fit
acting appropriately but they at least
say they believe in God or they believe
in a religion that comes from Abraham
why wouldn't I I mean if I disgrace him
I'm disgracing our
um shared ancestry I mean it's really a
disgrace to me as well so to be very
careful and that's where we're going to
go with this but I wanted to give you
two examples from Rabbi Abramson
so imagine you have
a checking account I'm sure many people
do and you keep a ledger because if you
know that if you mess up you know if you
bounce a check it could really mess you
up in business or even in friendships or
whatever you know it's not a good thing
so let's say several people and whether
it's a company or a marriage a right
instruction the same account and you're
not keeping track
so what one could do and the way he
described it is you link your savings
account to your um your checking account
and therefore if
God forbid right if for some reason
because you will be charged but you
won't bounce the check
and so what will happen is if you over
would overdraft you tapped into the
overdraft basically
so your check will be honored
now you don't have the money right think
of our credits I don't have the credit
but guess what when I'm in overdraft I
can tap into the the the merits of my
forefathers it's like having a checking
account and I'm going to overdraft I can
tap into the savings account okay so
that's one example that he gave another
example he gave with his um family and
they have I guess a package deal with
their cell phones and I'm I'm really not
familiar with this here in Israel
because we don't have it but I do know
the concept it makes sense they're
called um uh rollover minutes so for
example you get x amount of minutes on
the phone x amount of text x amount of
time on uh on the internet whatever it
is so so let's say one p one of the you
have three phones or ten phones on the
same package and one talks too much
meaning they go over the border the
other one text too much goes over the
other one but but if they could somehow
share
whatever however the rollover minutes
work whether it's interphone or
something like that that as a package
deal that you're all included right
because all five or ten phones were
guaranteed this many minutes for that
but they were overused by one but
underused by others so somehow another
this idea of rolling minutes you're
tapping into something that you're not
really privy to but because of the
Covenant because of the package deal you
get to benefit from something that
perhaps and we're going to call this
idea because we have to Define what Hain
is because if we read the verse
correctly
right in Hebrew
so the word is used twice as a
repetition
of that word so what is
Cain is Grace it's a free gift
it's
um it's may may not even be intellectual
it's an undeserved free gift and it's
also unconditional and there is no
measure these are very important under
things to understand now the same word
was also used by Noah okay so there is
this idea and I want to tap it into the
in terms of um the noahide
um
people relevance
now there is no question right once you
believe in the Bible that there is this
unique relationship that Jews have with
God and it's unlike any other nation
which is exactly part of this
conversation that Moses has with God in
chapter 33 which we will discuss
and so what we began to say in the in
the um I keep saying clear cut in my
head in the uh Tomah devorah right there
are those people who just act in
improperly they're not they're not
acting befitting they're not acting
appropriate yet Hashem has Mercy on all
and we started with this verse in Exodus
33 19. I shall show favor to those who I
shall favor which what in the world does
that mean so we started to discuss what
Cain is Kane is a free gift undeserved
okay
now it does say who act improperly it
does not use the word Evil later on
we're going to see the word evil apply
but in this case so far Hashem is
showing because we know that if you give
Mercy to those who are evil that's
misplaced mercy so it seems at least at
this point we're not talking about
anybody who's evil they're just they
don't know how to behave it's just
inappropriate
I wrote down a few points that I want to
mention I'm not sure how to do this
um
okay I'll just list the like the bullet
points number one we're not talking
about who evil people just people who
are acting improperly
we see that Hashem cares
okay and we'll see why you know what let
me read the rest of this paragraph it's
very short
now this is the Gomorrah we're going to
look at it carefully
this treasure is for those who do not
act properly now this is out of context
because I have to go into the Gamora to
explain
that Moses was taken up to the Heavenly
spheres and God showed him all the
different treasuries all the different
rooms
um how you say treasury houses yeah
Warehouse is very good
um and we're going to discuss it and I
think we should discuss it more in
detail but basically you know this is
for these people who did kynax for
Orphans these are people who did
Mitzvahs right and then Moses sees one
that's just huge it's like I mean I
can't even I don't even know 100 times
or a thousand times or a million times
bigger than all the others and God says
this is for people
who do not act properly I mean that's
crazy what does that mean
so that actually there's a there is this
is how the Gomorrah explains there's a
treasure House of Grace that a cottage
bar who Graces and gives them as a free
gift so that's what we're gonna have to
talk about
so number one we said evil it's not evil
it's just acting improperly number two
that God does Care number three that
there is this special treasury that is
going to be dispensed for free
but
there's still criteria in other words if
I come to a another Jew for a loan and I
want an interest-free loan or you
goes to get a loan they want to make
sure you can pay it back so they want to
look maybe at your age maybe how long
you took a residence maybe you have a
mortgage
whatever criteria so they may give you
an interest reloader they may give you
as a non-jew a very good deal
right so there are criteria for this I'm
going to call it a free gift when you're
giving charity so even when you come for
charity they want to make sure that
you're not maybe a drug addict or that
you really tried to get a job whatever
it is
okay
now let me just read the Hebrew Because
the actual phrase is that this storage
house that he showed Moses was bigger
than all the other storage houses
was for those who are not acting
properly
what does that mean
yes
there are many of the storage houses
that are for those that have acted
properly because
he's mamish graceful he's showing
compassion
he's actually giving them a free gift
and um now let's just read the next
paragraph and I'll go through some of
the other bullet points
um
the fisherman
God says you know to Moses what this
Treasure House is is because they have
they have this Merit that they didn't
earn but it was granted to them because
it was earned in previous generations
through their
parents or grandparents right now I just
want to say I talked to other Jews and I
say you know
you're not so religious
you think you're not so religious you
don't want to be connected to the
religion
and I'm like one second why what what's
going on here
you don't believe in it okay have you
investigated it we're talking about
Heritage or Legacy or something right
yeah so I say to them do you realize I
mean you you seem to be proud that
you're a Jew but you don't want to do
any of the responsibilities
so I I said one second the only reason
you're Jewish is because your great
great grandparents suffered to keep
Jewish to stay Jewish not that they
suffered not everyone suffered but some
and many times they were willing to
break the ice in the in the in the pond
just to go to the to the Mikvah at that
time of the month for the woman or to
risk their lives to give a Brit Mila to
their child
um to go out of the way and spend extra
money taking Kosher meat right there's
so many or to wear a wig or to wear
something over their heads when other
people might make fun of them there's
all kinds of things that you know our
ancestors did to remain faithful and
we're not even taking consideration they
weren't stupid people I mean we come
from them right they were Pious they
were righteous they provided an
education for their children so that we
can be here today there's so much things
they did isn't it worthwhile to check
out and investigate why they were so
willing to make the word sacrifice
instead of suffer willing to sacrifice
certain comforts right even money just
to provide to be able to do the
Commandments of God
according to the Jewish religion
so
you know just to think about that now
the truth is it should also apply to
non-jews you're here as well because of
your father's father's father's fathers
who accepted perhaps a religion or a
faith or they kept Morrow they ended up
in jail or you know they didn't go to
war and and commit harikari and suicide
right I mean they're they're you're here
today because of some
Merit as well for doing the right thing
Perhaps Perhaps I don't know everyone
has to ask themselves
so there is this thing called screws
avos
and God actually swore he actually swore
to them you'll find this
if you go to um in Genesis 22 16.
that God actually swore to I mean it's
not the only place he swore to them but
here's one example
if you want to read it
22 16 says and he said by myself have I
sworn says the Lord that because you
have done this thing and you did not
withhold your son you you're only one
he's talking to Abraham obviously yeah
right so many times God made covenants
and told him how much he loves Abraham
Isaac and Jacob and that he swore and so
here's just an example the sacrifice
that Abraham was willing to do which
really made no intellectual sense
whatsoever
um other than obedience
and God swore hello me I'm sorry one
second right it's part of the um
foreign
says God so yes he is sworn he's sworn
what that there will be this Everlasting
Covenant it would be unique relationship
and that um so I'm going to just read
here
um yeah verse 17 has all the blessing
yeah
I swear to the forefathers
meaning that even if in the future the
the Jewish people Israel doesn't act
properly yes
that they will Merit they will be this
um roll over a minute so to speak that
would be the idea of going from the
checking account into the savings
account to withdraw so that it could
save your you know
okay
so the peacock
and
again
this is very interesting this is like I
would highlight this line
so the fact is that even though if the
future children act improperly they will
Merit because the descendants of Abraham
Isaac and Jacob to whom I swore and now
drum roll please consequently
I will lead and guide them until they
are rectified
so you have a book called The Bible you
have the five books which is just the
first part I mean I don't know if it's a
quarter of the book or you know what I
mean it's a very small part of the book
here so here you have it right it's a
very small part of the book the rest of
it's the prophets the prophets that's
God's
continuous guidance continuous
involvement in trying to rectify it's
from his attempt whether we did or not
that's that would be our that would be
up to us but consequently I will lead
and guide them until they are rectified
there is a constant involvement
that's why we're going to talk about
this why do bad things happen to good
people or why do bad people sometimes
Prosper this is really part of the key
of the conversation that Moses had with
God before he revealed these um
when he revealed these attributes of
Mercy
okay so I want to sum up some bullet
points here
number one so what is scootavos it's not
just protection but it's remaining pure
as well
and another bullet point on this is that
he swore to our forefathers that he
would take care of their children that
would be us Jews and anybody who
connects to the Jewish Bible connects to
the uh the philosophy of Abraham
okay
now let's go into the last paragraph
this is how a person should act
well how should a person Act
ing
even if a so someone who's really evil
now I think it really means evil in
terms of uh Behavior not necessarily the
person himself is really evil
so and why do I say that because we know
that if you're really truly evil you
don't have any kind of Mercy on these
people the problem is that we assume
they're evil because they're acts so if
they act evil
Oz I'm sorry
don't act cruelly to them
foreign or don't act um in try to
humiliate them either
but you rather you should have mercy on
them and what should you say so so
Yakov you know in the end they're just
like me they're children of Abraham
Isaac and Jacob
sharing you know what if they're not
um kosher you know they're not acting
properly
guess what I will say him share him
their own grandparents great great
grandparents were certainly kosher they
certainly acted properly
now I'm going to read this in English
and then I'll say in Hebrew a person who
disgraces the children
disgraces the forefathers
so
yeah
pay attention
listen the Jewish people have made
mistakes we're the first ones to admit
it this is what the whole this is what
the whole Bible we're the Publishers of
the Bible right I'm not talking about
the five the first five the first five
it airs a lot of dirty laundry sure and
but the rest of it the rest of it is
rabbinic uh these are the rabbinic
leaders right the prophets were the
accepted rabbinic leaders
okay they came we we heard we didn't
always listen great but it's all
published by whom the you know from the
unshakeness of the godola time period
that the Bible was put together
I'm talking about the latter half you
know the the prophets and the writings
so yeah we're the first ones to admit
they're not where we're not perfect but
Baruch Hashem we have a lot of friends
right no hides who actually help right
they say hey aren't you supposed to I
was great a great friend
he says you know I mean these Jews
they're in denial they don't believe
that they're you know the chosen people
I tell them man you're the chosen people
you know get with the program do the
Mitzvahs right don't intermarry don't go
to church
just go to synagogue you know
so they there are people who are helpful
in this idea again what does God say
that I will lead and guide them until
they are rectified meaning there's hope
he cares he loves us so too
whether I'm Jewish or not and I see a
Jew misbehave am I going to love him and
guide him and help them until because
that is following God's footsteps this
is what God wants this is what he's
involved with so therefore I too don't
have to you know there's an idea when
you give rebuke right so you you're
gonna pull closer with your right hand
which is the mercy same time you're
going to push a little bit with your
left I don't know which comes first
doesn't matter maybe it does but the
point is you don't want to just push
away with your left you need to pull
together maybe simultaneously with your
right
um so going back to this idea a person
who disgraces the children disgraces the
forefathers ain't resignation
basically you don't want to you don't
want to ever disgrace the forefathers
right
so in other words if you disgrace the
child you're disgracing the forefathers
do not want their forefathers to be
disgraced because of me we're talking
about Abraham God God says Those Who
bless me will be blessed that's
including his children
he should conceal their shame and help
them Rectify as much as he can
say
um
so now if the person is in complete
Russia now that means what does it
really mean if you're a complete Russian
means you're probably
causing other people to sin so that is a
line that has been crossed if someone is
sinning privately and you know about it
that doesn't make them this kind of a
Russian in fact they're probably
embarrassed to be sitting in public so
that's already a plus right that's a
positive thing and they don't want to
execute them excommunicate themselves
from society as a whole by sinning in
public so there's already a shame on
their own there's already an
embarrassment on their own so you can
reach out to this person
and try to help them and we're really
going to talk about the idea of having
grace and mercy on them to the point
that you're going to bring in more grace
and mercy into the world that's the
underlying thesis of the entire time of
devorah how you cannot just help
yourself right you're changing yourself
by following God's Ways by following
these 13 13 attributes of Mercy but
you're actually drawing an example a
little example sure by drawing into the
world these these um
these ideas
um okay I want to get into so much
so we'll start with what do I have here
let's go to bracho 7A
um
oh here it is
okay good morning brothel 7A
um basically I'll sum up some of it and
then some of what I want to read because
it's really
um helpful for this discussion we're
having
let me just pull it up here okay here we
go
so there is a discussion
between
ribioconon in the name of Ruby Yoshi
and Ruby Mayer
now
we usually do not go with rebymair when
his name is mentioned
however this is not a halacha this is
more like a philosophical discussion
however
it could be that's enough that we're not
going to go by red mean there so I'll
quickly discuss the other opinion that
we probably do go with
I'm really going to skip over it because
we're talking about ready Mayer's
opinion this whole discussion is based
on repeat mayor's opinion
so the the Gamora actually says
that
Moses asks God for three things
first thing he asked him is that
if you uh quite complicated I don't want
to confuse anybody but if you go to
Exodus chapter 33 verse
15.
sorry 16. at 33 16.
33 16 says for how then will it be known
that I have found favor in your eyes uh
I and your people is it not in that you
will go with us
is it not that you go with us so Moses
asked God that the shrina should rest
with the Jewish people God says you know
I'll send you into Israel and I'll just
send my agent No No Moses says no we're
going with you if you don't come with us
we ain't going so there's a special
relationship that Moses wants to
continue on with God and that's clear
when he says right if you don't go with
us we're not going basically
now in that verse itself the word is
used so there is this idea of finding
Grace in God's eyes meaning a free gift
something undeserved
now continue with the verse
oh my God
um is it not that you will go with us
then I and your people will be
distinguished from Every Other Nation on
the face of the earth now this is Moses
asking God
number one
the first part of the verse you go with
us and number two don't go with any
other Nation you made a covenant with us
now I want to give a little bit of depth
here Moses understood better than anyone
else that if the Jews do not act
properly God would be willing to
separate himself with them
kill them off start over with Moses I
mean that's the whole idea that Moses
says no no wipe me out of the book which
is coming up this week right and that's
why in this week's parsha's name isn't
even mentioned okay that's not for now
the point is it sounds very strange I
get the idea join us have a relationship
with us a very unique and special
relationship
but why should Moses ask but don't have
that unique and special relationship
with anybody else any other Nation
we're separate keep us separate
and an Insight is like this and this is
very good for no hides to know
that again the background the back story
is that the Jews sin with the golden
calf some of them okay and God was
willing to wipe out and start over with
Moses as Moses going to do it I'm going
to start with you so what does Moses say
to himself you know I'm not going to
live forever with these Jewish people
right
I'm gonna die they're gonna go into land
of Israel
and they're been a sin
you know what God's going to do he's
going to say you know what
is what the Christians say right I am
going to start over I'll just you know
I'll find another group of non-jews who
keep the seven Noah laws like like
Abraham he was a non-jew that kept all
the seven Noah laws and was a Pious
person
and I chose him so after Moses would die
Moses is concerned I won't be around to
negotiate and try to get God to keep the
Jews around so I'm gonna while I'm alive
I'm gonna make God swear that he will
never choose another Nation no matter
how bad we are and no matter how good
a group of non-jews will be God will
never displace us or replace us with any
other Nation it's clearly written right
there
I want you to read the best part of that
verse again
the first part since he said well can
you read the whole thing but I want you
to focus on the second part of the verse
okay the second part of the verse he
says then I and your people will be
distinguished from Every Other Nation on
the face of the Earth
okay so Moses was saying do not make a
covenant with anybody else in addition
to what we have okay you won't get rid
of the Jewish people when I'm gone
promise me I just fought for their lives
I I you know what I mean I
God says I'm going to start with I'm
going to start a whole new nation with
you get rid of the Jews and Moses fought
for our a very existence and he won he
won that negotiation hands down and he
wanted to make sure it was solidified
that after he died it could never be
again now so we I don't know if I start
off by saying the opinion of revokana
neighbor of Yoshi was that Moses asked
for three things number one that God
should have a special relationship
relationship with the Jews number two
that he should not have any special
relationship with anybody else and
number three which is where there's a
mock Locus is the third opinion is that
he asked why he said Show Me Your Glory
in other words go to verse 13.
and 33 verse 13.
verse 13 reads and now if I have indeed
found favor in your eyes pre pray let me
know your ways so that I may know you so
that I may find favor in your eyes and
consider that this nation is your people
right so even though the word appears
right at least twice that I see right
here and you're you're dealing with the
same idea but he's asking
I want to know your ways what does kazal
tell us he wanted to know why do good
people sometimes suffer Obviously good
people also Prosper but what really
bothered him is why do good people also
sometimes suffer and of course bad
people suffer but that didn't bother him
so much what bothered him he wanted an
answer
why do bad people sometimes Prosper so
that was really the Crux of this
question that Gamora goes into some
really interesting ideas
I don't want to discuss them because
that would take us away from rebby Mayer
rebby Mayer says that question was never
answered God said I'm not going to
answer you but rather I'll tell you that
I will show favor to whom I will show
favor and I'll be merciful to who I'll
be merciful and it's basically none of
your business
this is the right this is the Crux of
the matter so if rebby Mayer
is correct
then we have a discussion
now I don't know if he's correct or not
it's irrelevant this is not a holotic
discussion this is a philosophical
discussion
so I found a very interesting answer in
the malbum that discusses the idea here
and this is where I think that there's a
good insight for non-jews as well
so the malbum explains
that the argument between
about this verse this very verse I will
show Mercy I will show Grace To whom I
will be graceful to him
thank you
and this is referring to people who are
not fit
they're not fit
and yet
God's showing them Grace again we have
to work out within our personalities and
our whether it's anger whether it's the
love we have to figure out how not to
embarrass them how not to um you know be
ungraceful and unmerciful I know if
that's even a word but we have to follow
God's ways this is what he says about
people who are not worthy
right before I read the marble let me
just go through the measures itself that
discusses this idea a little bit clearer
um
just a little bit clearer
so
I don't know where to start I'm going to
try to get to our Point here
so we I mentioned that um
okay let me just read here I'm going to
read it in English because it would take
too long to translate back and forth
and what it was written above so it says
I shall make all my goodness pass before
you remember the verse we discussed and
this is alluding to the attribute of
beneficence and the attribute of
Retribution okay and then it says I will
be gracious when I choose to be gracious
now all this alludes that at that time
the Holy One blessed me he showed Moses
all the storehouses of reward that are
designated for the righteous
so Moses said regarding one particular
one who's this for so God says that's
going to be for those who perform
commands and then Moses asked about
another one who's this Storehouse for he
said those are who raise orphans
and God explained the purpose of each
and every Storehouse afterwards Moses
saw a great Storehouse and he said who's
this for
and so God answered him he says he who
has good deeds to his credit I give him
from his own reward but he who does not
have good deed but he who does not have
good deeds to his credit I perform for
him Gratis and give him from this
storehouse
as it is stated I shall be gracious when
I choose to be gracious and I shall be
and so therefore right I shall be
gracious when I choose to be gracious
means to one whom I desire to be
gracious
and um there's a tremendous idea here
brought down
it's called unreal unrealized virtue
contrary to what one would expect the
midrash here implies that the store hair
the storehouse designated for those who
leave the world empty-handed is greater
than the ones reserved for those who
have accumulated a wealth of good deeds
in other words all these other
storehouses where people did things my
seem told him actions though those were
smaller than the one for the ones who
didn't deserve
so what are you going to come away with
going to walk away and say well I guess
if you don't deserve it you're you're
better off in the long run no
so there's a beautiful explanation here
people of great spiritual accomplishment
he observed sometimes imagine themselves
imagine themselves as supremely worthy
individuals but the truth may be
somewhat different people of this type
are often amply endowed with Talent
wealth favorable personality traits and
are so well suited for the Endeavors in
which they excelled that they would have
achieved even more had they been more
eager and attentive or more generous
with their time and resources as a
result when they are judged in the next
World they actually may be found
efficient in light of God's high
expectations of them right when we go to
heaven God's not going to ask me how
come I wasn't like this other guy he's
going to ask me how come I didn't
fulfill what Aaron David was supposed to
fulfill and I may have rested on my
Laurels thinking that I'm so smart or so
rich or whatever good look whatever it
is I have no idea but no they will be
rewarded of course from the story houses
embarked earmarks for the midst as they
performed but not as lavishly as they
might have anticipated
there are others on the other hand whose
achievements pale besides those are the
first group meaning they never reached
the levels
of accomplishments
of the first group but they are
nevertheless more highly regarded in
heaven
these people yearn to serve God with all
their hearts to increase his honor in
the world and share our goodness on the
people around them and indeed do so to
the extent they can
but this will be very important because
I'm going to give you an Insight on the
run on the Melbourne owing to their
personal financial or situational
limitations I'm going to call that
either nature or Mazel okay in other
words it's beyond their abilities they
were born into a poor family and they
never had the resources to have so many
Shabbos guests or to give so much
charity or whatever to Florida an extra
special regardless can you take a quick
question Rabbi yes
um my friend cookie out there is asking
is it true that uh Hashem has Mercy on
those who are merciful and gives to
those who give
that's 100 sure
we're talking now
in other words you get
what you deserve now we're talking about
those who
didn't earn it are still going to get it
at least that's what this commentary is
explaining
due to their own personal financial
situational limitations they are mostly
held back from carrying through their
intentions and their achievements remain
insignificant compared to those who are
more capable
if less Earnest and dedicated peers when
these worthy Souls arrive in the next
World they have a relatively meager
supply of Good Deeds to their credit
now because they lack in this world the
ability to do it although they had the
will
nevertheless God takes their notable
Ambitions into account
and he generously rewards them from a
special Storehouse set aside for this
purpose for all the good deeds that they
aspired to perform that they never
actually got a chance to
um there is a beautiful explanation as
well in the Robina bachaya to parshus
and I think this is going to take too
much time
um maybe after I read the album on what
we just read in the gemara and the
madrish
maybe I'll turn to that because we
didn't even we didn't even begin with
the explanation in the tournament of
work we just read the paragraph but
there's a whole explanation we didn't
get into it
so there's a lot like I said in the
beginning there's a lot of stuff to to
deal with
so the malboom and I'm going to do my
best to explain it
I mentioned that the Melbourne tries to
explain the actual argument between the
two and prior to this actually
there's there's a lot okay I don't want
to get lost I want to try to make it as
smooth as possible as simple as possible
so the modeling explains that remember
according to Rubio scene
a second
okay let's go that according to rubby
Mayer this idea of God's mercy and and
um and Grace was speaking about people
who were not fit who were not it was not
appropriate to receive this kind of
reward not necessarily that their
behavior wasn't
fit even
meaning to say
that it wasn't fitting for them from the
aspect like we just read in that comment
from their muzzle meaning they weren't
born with wealth they weren't born with
certain talents so they weren't able and
capable although they aspired to do
these mitzvahs
Rabbi is that uh to perhaps Foster uh
growth
um overall I mean can we take from this
if you are able to do do if you're not
able to do work on it
well some things may be uh beyond your
ability like for example we just happen
to be very graced that we have an
organization that we can host a hundred
plus people for Passover we have the
infrastructure we we can collect money
and just beat yourself up if you can
right
but some people if they don't have the
attributes to do this
I mean for whatever reason we've been
graced
but what about those who had not with
the the infrastructure the know-how
whatever and they would love to have
guests but they can't even afford it
so they they ask they whatever they they
try but they're not able to raise the
money through extra working projects
whatever it is but they would love to
have guests but they they in the end
they don't
so the very fact they wanted to have
guests Hashem will reward them for their
aspirations this is so I think I don't
see why this should not apply to anybody
in the world
um I mean I do have one idea why it
might not but for all practical purposes
it should at least for
um
practical purpose when we read on you'll
see why
so just again it would prevent unhealthy
competition
well we're talking about the world to
come which is you know God's pure grace
giving those people who had positive or
high aspirations but never met them but
they tried as you said you know but they
never accomplished it yeah they weren't
they didn't have the means yeah then
what about the people that had the memes
and did what we'll call average
they had the means and they only had you
know three guests when they could have
had 15 or they only gave out a hundred
dollars when they could have given five
or a thousand or more
so going back is not a good thing right
right he explains according to rabiosi
were supposed talking specifically about
people who are fit and it all comes down
to their actions and they're going to be
judged according to their actions and
their actions alone
whether it's rebby Mayer is the one who
says no this is God never answered him
because it doesn't work like there's no
logic to it and that's going to be the
bottom line
um he but he says there are two ways
that Hashem acts in this world
one is called the Natural Way nature
which I would also simply put
um according to judgment in other words
measure for measure everything is meted
out exactly that would be
nature
and then there's something that's called
above nature and that's where I believe
if someone attaches themselves to the
god of Abraham Isaac and Jacob attaches
themselves to the modern the
monotheistic philosophy of Abraham
um attaches themselves to the mission of
the Jewish people
they can change their masal they can
change their fate
so the malbum says there is another way
that God works and that's above nature
meaning that according to the strict
level
even one who let's say is born with bad
muzzle
what's bad Mazel what you say you know
they were going to be dirt poor and they
were born to parents that never even
educated them properly or whatever maybe
even abusive or dysfunctional
disadvantage right so someone who was
born disadvantaged
so if that person himself is righteous
and it would be fitting because he's
righteous to have miracles happen for
him
and by those Miracles happening he would
be given wealth right it's like rubbing
on that lamp and the genie comes to you
and like all of a sudden everything
changes for you no
you know why Miracles will not happen
because that's going to withdraw from
the savings account
yeah and let me just phrase this maybe a
little bit differently if the person he
had this
disadvantage but he was righteous
and therefore deserving of miracles to
happen for him
and then obviously Everything Changes on
the outside
therefore according to Nature according
to Nature
if the person was not righteous but he
prospered Hashem himself is not would
not necessarily change nature in order
to bring that upon him
right and God is not going to do good
Miracles I'm sorry even bad miracles in
order to bring this person down
therefore it would be impossible to know
what the reason is why someone who's
evil prospers or doesn't prosper
God's not going to do Miracles always
it's very possible that even good things
could happen to him
maybe because of the muscle because of
the Fate you just don't know why is this
bad person prospering this bad person
was born through a wealthy family and
inherit lots of money
so even if the person is fitting to be
punished
the the model is not going to
necessarily change for bad by way of
Miracle this idea we don't ask for
miracles to happen we don't want
Miracles what happens is if you it's
like taking that money out of the
savings account
and then it gets it goes down down it's
not something we're interested in doing
therefore it's impossible for any human
being to distinguish the reason why this
righteous person is either
prospering or this righteous person is
suffering
because perhaps this Sadiq happens to
have negative muscle bad circumstances
surrounding him nothing to do with him
so he would require constant Miracles
and having constant miracles
he is actually a punishment for him we
we don't know how this world works but
believe me that if you have God change
nature on your account it's going to be
taken away from your future account
so when when
um when miracles happen it's deducted
from your merits
and that is a great punishment you don't
want that
therefore again it's impossible to stand
by
um in order to establish this idea of
what reason is for this righteous person
whether things are bad for him or even
um a bad person to have good it's just
beyond our imagination and that's really
the explanation of the of them album in
other words Revy Mayer is right
there is no answer why I mean I know
Rabbi is this like Karma
like if somebody has Bad Karma and it's
beyond Karma
it means there is no logic see at least
Karma would probably be measure for
measure I don't really know what karma
is but that's what I imagine it to be
measure for measure that's more in line
with ribiosi and I gave a whole class I
happen to believe rabiosis correct but
it's irrelevant I have to know both I
have to understand both opinions
I have to be able to explain both
opinions so right now
often people that work hard still don't
get ahead
why does it happen yeah right and that's
really let me let me put it in briefer
terms that's because he is getting ahead
in the world to come you won't see it
here
and because if
he would get rewarded you saw it here
yeah you're taken away from hey for the
world to come and therefore it's none of
our business we should never judge
people
based on their success or not success in
whether they're righteous or not
righteous
bottom line
okay
now
I want to go now very hard thing for a
lot of people to do yeah
and I'm gonna get some some examples
from verses in the Torah now
um
now we did speak about this idea that if
someone is really evil
wouldn't we hate them shouldn't we have
why are we so it if they're really evil
and they're causing other people to be
evil yes so go to Psalms 139 verse 21.
Psalm 139 verse 21 says did I not hate
your enemies O Lord with those who rise
up against you I quarrel
so when somebody is really really truly
evil then we have an obligation to
perhaps uh dishonor them in public
there's always a way to deal with them
privately first but once they've proven
to be God's enemy so then there is a
there is a point of going against them
but most people are not really evil
their actions are evil but they're not
evil and you you have an obligation to
try to bring them back and the only way
to do that is to pull in with the right
and push out with the left but there's a
there's a trying to be a balance there
just going back to one more idea that we
asked the question
um who is correct ready Mayer or riviosi
so there is an interesting verse in
Jeremiah 12 1 that would seem to prove
readme mayor being correct
so if you go to Jeremiah 12 1
.
all right Jeremiah 12 verse 1 says you
are right O Lord when I contended with
you but I will argue with you why has
the Way of the Wicked prospered all who
deal with treachery have peace
you'd have to understand that this is uh
hundreds of dilemma for sure and if
Jeremiah has not been
privy to the information
right we're talking about Moses himself
s and the answer was given then either
rabiosi was correct or mayor was right
well sounds like from
year me Jeremiah's question that really
mayor's right that there is no answer
the answer was never given okay
um let's go on
and go to
well now we're going to get into
this um
the introduction to that Canon because
there's going to be quite a few other
verses to show you so he's basing
where Moses prayed he really wanted to
come into land of Israel the word the
root is khanina which is praying for a
free gift
Moses himself prayed to come into the
land of Israel Maybe
he didn't deserve it
I think it was a little bit deeper than
that I gave a share in Parsons according
to the Clear Car basically Moses was
saying
um
that
I mean it is praying for a free gift but
he didn't want to come in for the wrong
reasons
so he was not he was basing it on not
resting on my laurels in other words I
could save a God I'm so righteous I did
all these Mitzvahs and I'm going to go
into land division I'm going to do more
minces
No Moses was so humble and so honest
that he basically said
look I want to go into land of Israel to
do more missions but I won't say that
because if I say that who what if I get
there and then I S wow the Joffa oranges
are so nice wow the Golan Heights has
such a great skiing uh option and I love
the land and I get distracted and I
don't do the Mitzvahs but I just benefit
from the land because I think it's so
great
so Moses is saying like I won I'm not
gonna I don't want to go into the Land
Based on even my promises because who am
I well I'm just a human being the only
person that can make promise is the only
being that can make promises is God and
he fulfills them the human being can
only if he promises something he's to
fulfilled right away and I'm asking to
go into the land who says what's going
to happen maybe things will change when
I get there
so even that he wanted a free gift he
wanted unconditionally
without making any promises so that's
partial
but the the um the Ravena bahaya begins
with a verse in Proverbs Chapter 19 17.
chapter 19 verse 17 says he who is
gracious to a poor man lends to the Lord
and He will repay him his reward
so what is malada Hashem he's granting
God a it's really weird I mean God
doesn't need anything
and you're giving God Alone
okay God Is A lender to him who's
gracious to the poor actually you have
to read it like this God will compensate
the person when you see God is supposed
to take care of the poor right so you
give money to a poor person it's like
you're lending God money
and God will pay you back
that's how I understand it
okay you are a human being with some
money in your pocket you see a poor
person
well God's supposed to take care of that
poor person correct
well
I mean God Is Not a Human Being he
doesn't have pockets how's he going to
make it happen we don't like to use
Miracles God doesn't want to use
Miracles so the guy begs to you he
knocks on your door you cross paths and
he says I'm a little bit down on my luck
you have a job and so you get him a job
or whatever it is you help him out so
you're like the you're acting as the
lender for God
which means
God will pay you back for the money you
lent this guy
okay that's shot in the verse
so in this verse King Solomon is the
Proverbs explain to us the usefulness
meaning on a functional level of how to
practice charity
right it's a huge deal practice charity
and the great reward that's in store for
the performance of this commandment in
this life in the world to come
it's a well-known fact that the eyes of
a wealthy person are turned inwards
towards his own wealth or to the many
people whom he believes to be his
friends so in Chapter 14 verse 20 in
Proverbs what does King Solomon say
Chapter 14 verse 20.
Chapter 14 verse 20 says the poor man is
hated even by his friend but the friends
of the rich are many
okay look we have a lot of sympathy
right now for this poor man but
apparently King Solomon the wisest man
he understood the psychology of society
right this poor man he might have had a
lot of friends maybe when he was rich
and all of a sudden he lost his wealth
unfortunately it could be he lost his
friends as well
and who has all the friends the rich guy
right
so the remaining Baha'i explains the
poor on the other hand had no one to
focus his eyes on except Hashem I mean
you know broken-hearted feeling down
feeling like you have nobody to lean on
that's when you really attach yourself
to Hashem
he cannot rely on his personal wealth
seeing he doesn't have any
he can't turn to his friends either
seeing the poor doesn't have many
friends and even if he had many friends
before he became poor they're likely to
abandon him as they do not want to be
associated with a loser a person whom
they now perceive as a failure right
this is a big problem with Western
Society
they have to you have to teach children
you have to teach yourselves you're not
your wealth you're not your bank account
you're not you're however they express
your your job
is nothing to do with what's in the bank
it's a very sad fact that many people
probably experience a great amount of of
depression because they view themselves
based on you know certain external
things
anyway Solomon King Solomon already
taught us this piece of human psychology
I want you to go to chapter 19 verse
seven see we saw 1917.
but in 1907
1907 says all the Kinsmen of a poor man
hate him surely his friends distance
themselves from him he pursues
statements that are fit for him
but they are not found okay so just go
to reverse four in the same chapter
wealth adds many friends but a poor man
is separated from his friend you see how
this poor now it doesn't have to mean
poor only in finances but this is the
example given
right even the brothers of a poor man
hate him right from his previous
um friends and over here he finds
himself separated from his friends
Solomon means that even if he had one
solitary friend left this too this one
will also return away from him seeing
the poor person is shunned by all his
other friends peer pressure is
unbelievable but ready for this God
still loves him you're you're worth who
you are is not based on your wealth nor
how many friends you have to a certain
extent especially if it's based on this
these aren't really good friends
um so but we have to know God loves the
person
and this is made very clearly in Isaiah
Chapter 14 verse 32.
oh
verse 32.
Isaiah 14 verse 32 reads now what shall
the messenger of a Nation announce that
the Lord has founded Zion and therein
shall the poor of his people shelter
themselves
okay so this is very interesting because
we start off by talking about this
special unique relationship the Jewish
people have with God
um who are the Jewish people
we are acting as lenders
to Hashem I mean we give up a lot we're
teaching the Torah I don't know if we're
being compensated physically in this
world I mean I know I'm not I mean uh I
don't I mean I thank God I have a an
organization called yeah and I get a
very small uh stipend
um but nevertheless
people teach they're they're teaching
for for either peanuts or for nothing
there's a concept says that God gave you
the Torah for free don't charge you're
not supposed to charge for the Torah all
right that God gave you for free
so this is of help to the to the world
seeing that the Jewish people which is
signified by Zion in that verse act as
lenders to Hashem in supporting the poor
when they perform charity Hashem in turn
is indebted to them
and has to repay them both in this life
and the world after
now by the way it's not this is still
the Ravena bachaya he claims it's not a
custom
for the Book of Proverbs to mention
Commandments that are already explicitly
written in the written in the five books
unless there's a new dimension that he
wants to help us understand
so the words were
when Solomon spoke in chapter 1917
it's being gracious to the poor
instead of using Mirage which means
merciful
so
um the verse said you're granting grace
to the poor
okay it doesn't say it's extending Mercy
to the poor it's granting Grace
has a connotation of free right it's a
free gift
you're extending help for free without
demanding any sort of compensation from
the recipient
now Rabbi Rabbi what about those that
would take take it for granted um how do
we relate in that regard
if we keep using our criteria when you
help somebody that our criteria so if
the person doesn't fit the criteria for
example and we just get like he was on
drugs and you're not you don't believe
he's going to use it for the right thing
I mean you have every right to ask you
know like like a bank teller uh what do
you know the guy who gives the approval
for for loans
can I see your plan right
um you want me to invest or help you
start this business and I I'm gonna give
you the money but I want to put some
input you know you have to check in with
me every three months and I'll give you
more if it's succeeding if it's not
that's the limit I you know um this is a
good idea this is not a good idea I mean
anybody giving money has the right to
give his input right that it's not going
to be wasted
whatever the criterias are so I don't
know if I'm answering your question but
um to start with if the person is not
worthy of your charity again who are you
to decide that you can
speak to a rabbi
um so anyway
even when the recipient did not have a
claim on such generosity nevertheless
God extends it without strings attached
God himself will do that
um if only we could do that now Purim is
around the corner and what we do on
Purim specifically when people put their
hand out and ask for money you don't
investigate
okay so normally during the year 364
days of the year someone comes and asks
for a loan okay you can have a whole
conversation what are you using it for
now again
you're just giving them something if you
on Purim they want a large amount of
money you could invest again
but the general idea is we're not going
to investigate we're just going to give
freely and that is for Purim is even
higher than Yom Kippur it's a really
unbelievable day to pray for whatever
you want it's an amazing day I don't
even can't even verbalize explain the
heights that one can reach on Purim I
have no doubt about it
okay we know Sharon yeah hi Sharon
shalom shalom
okay so let me just continue we're
almost finished
so God extends it with our strings
attached in other words
this um you're kind to others Hashem is
beyond kind to you
um he had explained this as being one of
the attributes when he told Moses and
Mount Sinai and this is our verse
chapter 33 19. the hinati at the right
basically I reserve the right to extend
my grace to whom I will be graceful and
I will be merciful to whoever I extend
my Mercy to
we are commanded to emulate this
attribute of Hashem and I think I
already talked about this verse but if
not in Deuteronomy chapter 28 verse 9 it
would be nice if you read it to us I
think we didn't read it I quoted it
28 verse 9.
this is the basis for the whole idea of
following the 13 attributes of Mercy
chatova in its right time
everything will happen
so Deuteronomy 28 verse 9 says the Lord
will establish you as his holy people as
he swore to you if You observe the
Commandments of the Lord your God and
walk in his ways those last two words in
Hebrew
and walk in his ways
okay big key yeah so we're commanded to
emulate the attribute of Hashem
when the Torah writes these words you
shall walk in his ways just as God
extends his Mercy by not asking anything
in return we too must relate to the poor
without asking anything in return When
someone practices this commandment
and he makes certain requests from
Hashem in the course of his prayer
his prayer will be favorably received
now the verse he quotes here is from
Psalms chapter 30 verse 9.
Psalms chapter 30 verse 9 says To You O
Lord I would call and to the Lord I
would supplicate
okay now I'm not sure supplicate is
actually the best trend I mean what does
it mean so it means to make an appeal
but in Hebrew is a free gift
this is the idea that um you're you're
when we pray
and I mentioned this before I make sure
not to pray
by saying God I did all this give me
what I deserve because I can never right
the inappropriate sure
I could never listen
God has done hesitant kindness with me
from the moment maybe before I'm sure 40
days before I was even conceived but
sure from the moment I was conceived at
least physically and from the time I was
born and every day of my life since he
has shown kindness how can I ever pay
him back how can I ever say my Mitzvahs
are totaling up to the point where you
owe me I only will always owe him he
will never owe me so therefore I am
forced to be real and say whatever yes
for that definition that clarification
free gift I cannot ask for anything
beyond that
um so now when it says just to make a
quick summary that this idea is as you
swore to our forefathers just that free
gift listen I probably don't have
the the Merit coming to me right I don't
have the rollover minutes whatever I
don't have the money in the account
I personally don't
when it comes to other people how do I
treat them that what they're better than
me
they're in the same position I am
but they're the children of Abraham
Isaac and Jacob or as I said to the nun
to the to the noahides you have bought
into the religion of Abraham he's your
spiritual father
so you're related to him like I'm
related and Sharon when she becomes
Jewish she's about to avraham she
becomes literally
in every sense the daughter of Abraham
that's a full-fledged convert I don't
know what they call you know when I have
the non-jews that ask me for prayer that
to pray for them I usually would say the
daughter of Adam and Eve
okay not the daughter of Abraham and
Sarah but why not if you become not even
full-fledged Jewish but attach yourself
to Abraham I think there's a there's a
there's there's room here there's a lot
of room here
um so anyway they don't deserve it on
their own but they're only because God
made a covenant with Abraham
in this case he made a covenant with
Abraham keep that in mind and that's
separate from the Covenant at Mount
Sinai so you could attach yourself to
the Covenant of Abraham a non-jew for
sure attach yourself to the Covenant of
Noah
and as Sharon has so proudly mentioned
that you would like to attach yourself
in a different way through the Covenant
of Sinai the cyanatic well keep in mind
even the seven laws were towed over at
Sinai so there is a semantic covenant
made with the non-jews of Sinai as well
element there yeah
so it's all open to you I hope I hope I
didn't confuse too much because there's
a lot wrapped in this and they gave us a
very short paragraph to deal with of
course there's many commentaries and I I
don't even I've always tried to
understand mazal and and and sometimes
even even uh supplicate for such I mean
uh sometimes for myself life can be you
know seem like such a one-way door where
you're out pouring out pouring you just
don't have you know the resources to do
uh the many things you you'd like to and
you know it just hits a wall at times
and so uh yeah you're looking for Amazon
trying to understand the way I think it
was uh uh um
the ram cowl explained it quite well
uh what series was that
um
might have been a path of the just
um
I'm not certain 100 and I don't want to
misquote but uh
um clarify the difference between uh
yeah
let me give you some background maybe to
maybe I'll give you some insight
so as you probably described on a more
spiritual level the Masala is like
fate when you were born according to
what star according to this according to
that and the Jews outside of mosul God
took avram outside of the tent outside
of the tent means outside of the stars
and we are directly connected with
Hashem
and we're above which basically means
that we have a little bit more leeway in
terms of free will but we're not going
to get into that now because anybody can
attach themselves to this higher level
of mazel and I'll explain that in a
second so and that's partly what Sharon
is doing but
Mazel is a flow literally means a flow
so the flow that's already let's say
from before creation into creation and
we'll call that fate however it's an
acronym
masala's mem Zion
it's the acronym means the place
zuman means time
so we're asking Hashem we're praying to
Hashem everyone should do this non-jews
as well
I God I want to be in the right place
at the right time only you can
orchestrate that without miracles in
other words give me the Insight give me
the clarity to be in the right place
at the right time
the last letter
doing the right thing
and how are you going to get that
hopefully with the reading the Bible
right having rabbis having smart
intelligent
wholesome
uh role models to follow
this will change your muzzle you're
tuning in to the god of Abraham Isaac
and Jacob you're saying I want to attach
myself to you you're the only Power in
this world and everything is under your
right the Genesis God created time and
place time and space
knowing that he is the ultimate
orchestrator of time and space
you're just hoping to be there doing the
right thing and that's where the Insight
comes hopefully you'll have the right
Insight well first you have to pray to
him for the have to do the to be in the
right thing the right time definitely a
lack of mazel definitely comes from
being in the wrong place at the wrong
time
simple as that ah
simple it's so simple it's unbelievable
well thank you Rabbi so much for
clarifying that I also appreciate you
pointing out that there is a massive
difference between prayer and
supplication
um yeah just in that one verse uh but
there's so much in this lesson that
um yeah I think you probably we probably
could have broken into a couple of parts
and uh still going on but uh
um yeah beautiful beautiful stuff there
for sure and uh you clarified that exact
verse where
um was it uh in Exodus 33 16 where uh
Hashem made it clear or when
Moses was praying for that uh
specifically uh building that Covenant
uh
No Other Nation right that that is just
mind-blowing right I mean just think
about it he was afraid not afraid he was
concerned the Jews the Jews are human
beings
you dropped the ball
and there's a bunch of you know
righteous non-jews that's kind of like
your Philadelphia Eagles there a few
weeks ago I think just before our last
uh time uh I was telling you
Philadelphia because you're originally
from there uh Philadelphia was in the
Super Bowl and you know they were
kicking butt the first half and dropped
the ball the second half they just
couldn't stop the offense of Kansas City
and uh lost it in the end uh but we're
all human yeah
yeah but uh God made a covenant and he
will not change it he will not divorce
US and there's this
eternal Covenant and we are
sharing the tour with the world
hopefully for free and uh doing our best
well hopefully people that do benefit
support the uh uh places that they
actually benefit from
um we know you do so much there in
Jerusalem for uh those in need like you
you mentioned with Purim coming you
you're gonna have uh what a hundred
people you were saying uh for for a meal
that would be for pesach but yeah yeah
Purim we have thousands of dollars that
we give out to um
to needy families throughout the year
but specifically uh on Purim as well
because it's a mitzvah
and it's a special Mitzvah to give out
the charity on Purim so we do have a
link in or a website and maybe perhaps
down below I got to post it up there
ubana.com if you want to support uh uh
uh yubinay and everything that postings
doing there in Jerusalem beautiful
beautiful stuff we so appreciate you
sharing this series with us and uh it's
it's got so many uh intricacies that I'm
sure it would could keep on fluffing uh
but just even uh first exposure uh for
me to Tomo dvora uh it's just beautiful
stuff so we've only got one more uh uh a
session in this it's only 13 attributes
we've done 12 parts now
um Hashem Willen are we on in a couple
of weeks or we just leave it at your
schedule well we'll just say a couple of
weeks I'm really not sure where I'll be
holding pressure wise right before
pesach
um it's coming up in a month and uh
we'll try our best we'll try our best to
make it happen before passage that'll
give us some time to think of what we'll
do after PESA because we have to start
something else
um so let's say let's shoot
for some time before Passage
well thank you so much Rabbi
um so yeah folks uh that's gonna be our
show for today beyond the seven live
from Jerusalem with Rabbi Aaron David
Poston uh who I appreciate so much uh
sharing uh the beauty of uh Tomer
devorah the 13 attributes of hashem's
mercy and may we all be able to
integrate uh I think today's lesson you
know especially about being kinder to uh
the poor and uh how it all works out and
um it's just such a joy so uh till next
time we're gonna sign up for now have a
wonderful wonderful week folks bye for
now
everybody
