baby's brother
and once again we also have an anonymous
donor so I do want to thank on behalf of
myself
Mr Mrs or Miss Anonymous may they be
blessed with all of the blessings for
those who support Torah I hope that
everyone had a a wonderful inspiring you
know there's a very famous Fort that is
said that shavuos is called the day of
Matan Torah the day of giving of the
Torah it is not called the day of
receiving the Torah even though when
Pierce talks about the Torah being
transmitted it always says kibel he
received he received he received so why
isn't she was called the day of cabola
Satora and the answer is Matan Torah is
what God did so God gave us the Torah on
a certain day Kabbalah Satora is what we
have to do that every single day we have
to renew our commitment you know people
sometimes think oh Shibu house that's
the day I accept the Torah the rest of
the year you know I'm back to everything
just like the no there's no Mother's Day
or Father's Day in Judaism because
there's a Mitzvah of the aim the whole
year Kabbalah satara we do every year
not every year every day and therefore
we don't we're not magdir shavuos
as the day of Kabbalah Satora because
every day because
every single day the Torah has to be
something new and fresh and we pray
every day that Hashem should make it
sweet
in our in our hearts and in our minds
so uh actually today maybe in honor of
the million notes tomidos I'm not sure I
do want to say over a very beautiful
thought from the barbershire levy
relevant to the period right after
shavuos
and he points out hola quickly from his
from the altar rabbit from the who wrote
a great great Cipher the kharab which is
a very very very significant source of
not just for Chabad I mean all the
possum deal with the shloken of the
mission
everyone always looks at the shohana
made an observation that we know that
every single holiday the day after the
holiday is called which literally means
you tie it to the holiday
it's really a pun it's taken from a
person to heal him which we say in halal
but the positive can tell them is a
totally different meaning there's a
phrase and to heal him
now what that literally means is you tie
the carbon of the holiday in ropes when
you bring it to the mizbayak it's an
animal you're going to share so is
means to tie up the animal that you're
going to bring as a sacrifice when you
bring it to the base of miktas but by
rabbinic pan
they re-translated hog not to mean the
carbon of the Khan but the holiday
itself and is means you tie the day
after the Haag to the hag
so there's still a kadusha of the khag
that comes the day after
now we have israuch of pesach we have
Israel Khan of sukhas which is after
some pastora and we have Israel
as far as they know there's no direct
concept of israuchad after Rosh Hashanah
but that's because you move into that
Sarah
is well that's a whole other different
thing because you're already getting
ready for circus and the light but for
the shallis regardless have a concept
called
so the Elder rabbee writes in the
shogunarak however that the Israel
is more important and more significant
than the Israel of any other holiday
is has a greater kadusha than the Israel
height of pesach and the Israel of
sukkas
why is that so this is going to get a
little technical
it actually is a very technical
explanation but there'll be a beautiful
message at the end of it so I hope uh
you will bear with me for a little bit
of a while it is because
has a unique name which is called Yom
Tavo the day of Slaughter
now that sounds ominous but what does
that actually mean we know
that during the shelves were gone them
during the pilgrimage festivals every
male Jew it's a Mitzvah only on the men
must physically go to the Courtyard of
the base the Azara and bring with them a
burnt offering that's called an ola
in fact it's called an olasria the Ola
by which you are seen by God
oh lasriya now you can bring the you
only have to bring one oh lasriya and
you have seven days to do so meaning if
you didn't bring it the first day of
pesach you could bring it you just can't
bring in a Chavez that's the thing and
for sukos you actually have eight days
because we allow shmini at sarit to be
one of those days
now
how many days do you have for Shabbos
now logically you might think well gee I
just have one day because for us is only
one day but we say that you also have
seven days shavuos plus six more days
because we were makish we compare
shavuos to pesach just like pesach you
have seven days to bring the oh lasriya
you also have seven days for uh now the
gemara asks why do you compare
and only give you seven days let's
compare shavuos to sukos and give you
eight days like why do you go with the
Lesser numbers I think more says quite
logically because the Lesser number is
the only number you know for sure
meaning to say if I'm in doubt whether I
have seven days or eight days because
I'm not sure if I should compare shabuos
to pesach or to sukis then the only
thing I know for sure is I have seven
days this is the famous expression to
faster meruba when you try to grab onto
too much lotafasta you don't have
anything okay
now here's the thing though even though
for shavuas you have seven days meaning
Shabbos
most people would want to bring their
carbon the first opportunity that they
had
and that would be the day after the
antif
and therefore it's called the day of
Slaughter because that was the primary
day
where people brought
and that's unique to the Israel because
you see the Israel of pesach it's
already too late to bring Leola three
because the holiday is over the israuch
of sukhos it's too late to bring Viola
Surya the only Israel which you could
still bring the old lasriya is the
Israel
and since people would want to bring it
the earliest opportunity that would be
and it gets the special name of
okay so far I hope it's relatively okay
now
this year with Shabbos so actually you'd
have to bring it the night the next day
for sure
but here's the question
why do we describe
as the first opportunity
you could bring in all those Rihanna
yamtov itself
Young Thug is the first Friday is the
first opportunity you don't have to wait
till the day after in this case this
year will be two days after
so in reality
there's a fascinating
in the mishnah
between base shamai and basilo
can you bring an olatrya on YouTube
because remember when you bring an Ola
you're shechting
and you're burning
these are malachos
you're allowed to do malachos for
cooking
so you could certainly bring a peace
offering on YouTube because you're going
to eat some of the meat
but a burnt offering is going to be
totally consumed by God
so base shamai actually takes the
position
that you're not allowed to bring a burnt
offering on yomtov because the Torah
permitsov only for human consumption
and not for divine consumption this is
Bay shamai
it is very very true
that the first opportunity to bring an
olatrya is
that is true
but they sell El Argus with baishana
basil actually says you make a call
if God allows you to do malach for human
food
how much more self or Divine service
now as is always the case whenever you
have a machlocus
is of course like basila which means in
other words the no later
can
be brought
y
so the Kasha is why do I glorify Israel
by designating it as the first day
that you could bring the Allah
that would be true only according to
beijamai
that's not true according to basilo
according to base Zillow yeah you could
bring it the day after but you have you
know but that's no better than the other
days you have six days after
in terms of a first opportunity yep is
your first opportunity
so
the shock
says something
that's very enigmatic
he says even though for sure
when there's a much Locus by shamai and
basila
is like base hello
but now Gohan
the people adopted a custom in the time
of the Temple
that on this they would follow bait
shamai
and they would not bring the olatrya to
laughter yamta
and that's why is
gets glorified as the day of the olatrya
because even though according to baselo
you could have brought it on YouTube
this is very enigmatic why would it be
why would they follow beijama if Allah
does not like bashamai in fact we have
we have another mission in Brazos that
actually talks about it's not even
proper to follow by shama in a lot of
situations do you remember this is
actually a famous mishna nothing to do
with with our subject but it's an
example of not following it says by
creation
you shall read the Shema when you lie
down
and when you get up mclokes
hamai and basila beshamai says literally
when you read the Shema of the evening
you should lie down and read the Shema
when you read the Shema of the morning
you must stand up and read the Shema
that's what peshamai says what does
basil say no the terror is not talking
about how you have to read it the just
means that the time of this man the
evening is when people would begin to go
to sleep
and in those days people often went to
sleep when the
night you know when the stars were out
there wasn't electricity
means you read the morning when you get
up
commissioner then gives a story that
rabbit tarfon says
you know I was once traveling at night
and it was time to say the Shema of the
evening
so I figured I'll do what they shot my
says because even basilo wouldn't pass
up doing like bashama so I lay down on
the ground
to say the Shema of the evening
and I almost got killed by Bandits
because I was vulnerable
so if he expected sympathy from his
audience unfortunately he didn't get it
the sages said back to him you know you
were high of me so you deserve to die
because you're not following
okay tough love
you know don't be such a big Sadiq Allah
you do like basala
so in light of that mission in
particular
the altar rabbi's explanation is a
little enigmatic
according to the they could have brought
the Allah
and yamchief but the custom was they
deferred it to after you why
so this is where the reviews explains
his great great grandfather
very very beautiful and I'm going to add
some things that rubby doesn't mention
so
this is not going to be a literal
chapter in verse but the basic idea is
taken from his explanation
that is the morale
talks about the facts that many many
aspects of well the Lauren Shabbos says
many aspects of Matan Torah
are connected to the number three
there is a statement in the gemara
blessed is Hashem
who gave us a three-fold Torah
Torah nivim kasuvin
to a three-fold nation
kohane leaving Israel
in the third month of the calendar
counting from Nisa Nissan here Sivan
after three days of preparation
so apparently just as it's a well-known
idea
that the number four is connected to
many aspects of the Seder the four Sons
the four questions the four cups of wine
the four terms of redemption right four
is conducted to pesach
apparently three is connected to
matantora
but the gamara doesn't say why the guard
just makes the observation there's a lot
of threes
in matantore but what is the
significance of three
so says the morale
a very beautiful thought
three symbolically is a number that
represents synthesis
integration and harmonization of
opposites the way this works is
visualize a triangle
so you have the base of the triangle
where the two points are moving in
opposite directions
there's Point here and point here
opposite but then you draw lines from
those opposite points and they meet at
the top
it synthesizes it harmonizes forces that
are moving in opposite directions
and the notion of three as synthesis
emerges in many many different places in
Kabbalah and again at rivers and durable
is here until she brought in an
excellent book on the three wrote so you
can actually get the book and see a full
explanation of this but the notion is
that let's take the first three of the
lowest females we have loving kindness
which is represented by avraham avina
and then we have gevora inner strength
and discipline and judgment
that is represented by yitzra these are
opposite forces
they get harmonized and synthesized in
the third sphera that is called tifferis
which is beauty or Splendor which is
representative of yaakovino and that is
why avraham that is just pure cassette
there's still going to be a little bit
of a posoleus a little bit of a soul
that comes out in Ishmael
and yet Scott that represents pure
devorah there'll be a little bit of a
basolus that comes out in asaph
it's only yaakovino that harmonizes
synthesizes
and by the way to Ferris is also called
MS
because Ms by definition does not go to
one extreme or the other it harmonizes
all of these forces and that's why
yaakovino meet Uso shuleima all of
yaakov's children are we've had our
problems to be sure but all of us are
part of the Jewish people we all have
that destiny that Hashem gave to of Rama
Vino right so three is integration
synthesis harmonization of opposites so
the morale says the human being
inherently is a creature of
contradiction
we have a goof a body we have a nishama
we have a Godly Soul we have an animal
cell we have a yes or toe we have the HR
I mean they're different aspects of how
you describe this we are pulled in many
directions on one hand our bodily urges
we seek Comfort we seek laziness we seek
acquisition we seek power we seek ego
and at the same time our true essence
wants to be unified with God in kadusha
and spirituality
and even a person who is totally so to
speak enmeshed in the physical
in their innermost Essence there is this
yearning even if they don't know it on a
conscious level there is this yearning
to be connected to God
but body and spirit
difficult situation I'm being pulled in
many many different ways
without a Torah
there is no way to reconcile the body
and the spirit
my body is moving in One Direction
my rookiness is moving in another
Direction
but Torah this is all the morale Torah
is the number three
because the Torah teaches me a new way
of life that I achieve holiness
not by escaping physicality
not by rejecting physicality
not by
trying to become an angel
but by eating and drinking and earning
money
and getting married and having families
but doing it with the right intention
you see that's why other religions would
sometimes say the only way you could be
holy is by being celibate got to
separate from the man woman connection
or you have to take a vow of poverty
or you have to fast all the time or lie
on a bed of nails or wear a hair shirt
because they see physicality as a
contradiction
to the ability to serve God
but by definition that's not a
sustainable level because after all
eventually you got to eat you got to
sleep eventually
by definition you're going to go back
and forth in a schizophrenic
you know rat race
the Torah allows a harmonization of
these opposite forces
right get married have families earn
money eat eat with the Cabana to have
strength to serve Hashem eat but they
could run into honor Shabbos
eat with the Cabana that even if you
like the food
you use it as a means of gratitude
that gave you something delicious to eat
right and the Rambo himself writes the
rambam writes uh in the mission of Torah
and also in the introduction to pierce
called the Shimona program
that he quotes the Posse in mitchley
you must know Hashem
in all of your ways meaning not only
when you're doing spiritual things like
davening and learning
but in your eating and you're drinking
and your intimate relationships in your
vacations in your jogging and you're
playing basketball
if you have cavana
that I'm doing this
to be able to serve Hashem in a better
way that becomes Hashem this is a
tremendous thing you know a person goes
to work you can have two people
and they're both doing the same thing
they're sitting in an office
all day
doing the same thing
and nobody's breaking even everyone's
doing okay
after 120 years
one person will get a lot of all them
above because of his office work
and the other person won't
because it all depends on your makshava
if you look at you know I'm going to
work to earn money to take care of my
family to give stucca to support Torah
to make a kidish Hashem that's my
conscious thought
then every moment you're working in the
office
becomes a votes Hashem
if you go through the motions without
that thought then it doesn't in fact
somebody has told me you're from earlier
about beyond that when he would see
street cleaners in Eric Israel
he would say you know every street
cleaner who's making the street look
nicer is doing the Mitzvah of yeshu of
Erich Israel because doesn't only mean
living here it also means to make it a
nicer country
that if the person doesn't have an
awareness that they're serving Hashem
it may not turn into about the Sasha
right so the Torah connected to three
says we no longer have to have a
dichotomy between physicality and
spirituality
we have the capacity
to sanctify
the physical and therefore we're no
longer living in the schizophrenic world
of body versus soul
but the body can be enlisted so to speak
in the desires of the soul and the
yearnings of the soul and the light
that's a tremendous thing to sanctify
the physical
rather than reject the physical
now this actually explains
a very interesting idea Martin Chavez
has a famous story
that when Moshe was in shamayam getting
the Torah
so the Malachi yashares didn't they were
arguing with God you shouldn't give the
Torah
people they're going to ruin it they're
going to mess it up they're going to
violate it because they don't deserve
the Torah
and Hashem said to mosha Moshe give him
an answer what's the answer
emotion was afraid he's surrounded by
these millions of angels of Fire
and Moshe rabena was terrified
so Hashem says hold on to my throne
and you'll have confidence
he owes on to hashem's throne and then
Hashem says to Moshe Moshe give him an
answer
and moshe's answer was a long answer he
was basically saying to the angels hey
Angels yeah you're purely spiritual
but you don't need a tower the Torah
says don't eat meat milk do you eat
because even by Abram they ate but they
fake it they really weren't eating honor
your father and mother do you have a
father and mother don't kill do you have
a yachohara this you don't have a yes or
you're not you're not involved in the
physical world
the Torah has no meaning for you
because you're not in the physical
circumstances
in which these misses are carried out so
we got the Torah
because of our connection to physicality
because the Torah is the Madrid it's the
instruction manual
how you elevate the physical and those
who have no connection to the physical
have no real connection to the Torah
because the Torah is about sanctifying
the physical
in fact this may explain another
interesting anomaly you know it's it's
brought down
that on well we know this from the
telegraph that the the meal offering
that's brought on pesach is of course
the barley offering that's called the
all-mare
and the meal offering that's wrote on
shavuas are two loaves of wheat bread
that are called
now the obvious distinction between
barley and wheat the gemara already
points out barley was commonly fed to
animals
at least before the invention of
children's a wheat was eaten by humans
so freedom pesach freedom without Torah
we're like a wild animal
when we have Torah we have human dignity
okay that's the weak part of the barley
wheat but there's another difference
that people don't often note and that is
the Omer offering
was non-homet it was not allowed to I
did not become promised now you might
say well that's obvious because it's
pesach but that's not the reason that
may be a reason but it's not the only
reason in point of fact all meal
offerings
that are brought in the base and make
this the whole year
can are not allowed to be hummus the
base of mcdosh is largely a chromate
free zone
but the uniqueness of this
is it is the only minha
at least a communal offering
that is actually chromates
have to be when it's forbidden to have
comics in any mental offering not just
the Omer which happens to be pesach
during the year you are not allowed to
either bring a Mithra that's because or
even eat them in eat the leftovers
why would comments be permitted in the
case of this day Allah
so the morale says quite beautifully
tomorrow says we know that hamate is an
allusion to the Yates it's puffed up
it's arrogant
now the only reason we got the Torah
was because of the Yates that was
moshe's arguments
so how can I exclude the Yates of harah
when we're celebrating matantara in
other words the concept is uh what am I
going to tell we can't have comments in
the base of miktas and shavuas because
you're the Yates
hey without me you wouldn't have gotten
to Torah so you can't exclude me from
participation in matantara and to put in
a slightly different way through Torah
we can even deal with the Yates so now
the Ace of horror can be safely
controlled and directed and this
explains yet another interesting gamara
how do you reconcile two verses
in the toilet one past success at Ceres
La Shema local
is to serve God
and another plastic says
for you
so how do you is it for God or is it for
you
mclokes Rabbi Eliezer
and rabbi yahushua
Rabbi Eliezer says you have a choice how
you decide to keep your yamchev you can
dedicate your totally for God learn
Davin you don't have to eat according to
abuelizer I don't mean the pesos hater
but on the day of yamch if you're
allowed to fast if I want to sit and
learn and Davin and Nadi
I'm allowed to do that I'm making it for
God
or I could choose to be a bit of a
hedonist and go to a fast minion and
spend most of the day eating or drinking
says either or
we don't pass them like grab aliasers
don't be sure you don't uh you know
follow him Ravi Joshua says no no no the
turret doesn't mean either or the terror
means you gotta divide your day half of
your day or you know slapped after 50 50
but some of your day is for Learning and
davening and some of your day is for
eating and drinking and you're this is
how we pass again to eat or drink okay
liezer and Rabbi Yoshua all right that's
fine but then the gemara throws you for
a loop a little bit it says the Marco
Locus
rabbielliasu uh is on pesach and sukhos
but when it comes to shovelhouse
even Rabbi Eliezer who normally gives
you the option of learning all day
says You Gotta Eat you gotta have your
cheesecake
because that is the day
that the Torah was given
now wait a second
that's a bit of a non-sequitur I almost
would have expected the other way that
even Yeshua that says you have to eat
I can give the whole day to Torah
learning
that's what I might have thought right
it's not the case the guitar says the
opposite point
even rebelie Ezra that says I can learn
all day on YouTube
and I gotta eat
because that's the day of the Torah
but why why do I ask you the answer is
because if the Torah was given
because we can Elevate the physical
then I gotta take the physical and
elevate it I can't say I'll just be
spiritual because if I just want to be
spiritual the Angels win the Angels win
because whatever spirituality I can I
can approximate will not be their
spirituality
so if I want to establish
why I should have the Torah I gotta be
physical I gotta be physical
so now
the rebbe says the following I love you
really happy we have to go back to the
question of the Allah and that is let's
look at carbonos for a month right we
have many different types of carbonos
in every Corbin part of the Corbin is
sacrificed on the misbeck that's true
but for things like peace offerings I
eat some of the meat
the case of an Ola it's totally burnt on
the altar
so the perfect shot is the Ola
represents the Holiness of renunciation
and asceticism
you're giving everything to God
I yet no benefit from it
the shalomim where I eat part of it
represents sanctifying the material
rather than escaping it
so
so here is the rebbe's interpretation of
nagoham
even though it is true
as a matter of technical halacha
that the Ola could be brought on shavuas
because that's
but since shavuos is a celebration
of elevating the physical
rather than repudiating it
it was a Minogue among Claudius rail to
de-emphasize the role of the ola anshuas
and focus more on the so when the outer
Webbie says
it was the minerg of the people to
follow by shamai he doesn't mean on
every umptive for pesach they brought
the Ola three on the first day
although if they didn't they had a
makeup time on sukos
they brought the Ola three year and the
first thing
when the alter rebbe says
they were no Hague like beishamite he
means very specifically only on shavuos
they were no egg like by shamai because
they wanted to de-emphasize the role of
asceticism
and repudiation of the dashmi of the
physical
to celebrate the capacity of taking the
physical
taking your animal parts Universe
Bahamas and elevating consecrating using
it for the service of of Hashem just as
the torahs compared to three
and the idea that this
and
the idea that
everybody admits that once you have to
physically eat even the opinion that
gives you the option of fasting
because all of this is about taking the
physical and elevating it
in fact the rebbe says that this is the
explanation of a well-known Madras you
know the source of the Minag of
um staying up all night the first night
of us
which originated in the time of review
Cairo which was not a Minogue in the
medrish it was not a minor in the time
of the Gomorrah
in fact there's a very interesting
academic article I saw
that traced the spread
of the minute of staying up all night
with the introduction of coffee in
Europe you know coffee
you know it's actually it's a very
interesting correlation coffee is not
native European coffee is native from
the Americas so coffee didn't get to
Europe
until the 1500s after Columbus and and
the like and it reached different
countries at different times
so this historian started figuring out
when did Jewish communities begin to
stay up all night's first night and they
found that it correlated with the
introduction of coffee into those
particular countries and you know again
I uh actually I I think that's probably
legitimate hypothesis because after all
I mean if you're too tired to stay up
you're not going to be able to stay up
so you need something something like
that but what is the basis of this
minute
of staying up all night because there is
a Madras that says that the night before
matantara
the Jewish people went to sleep
and when Hashem came at the crack of
dawn to give them the Torah they were
asleep he had to wait for them
so in order to rectify the sin of going
to sleep and keeping Hashem waiting we
get up early that's why I tell people by
the way if they have a choice
of learning let's say they can't stay up
all night
should they learn late and then get up
late or should they go to sleep early
and get up early it seems that the men
again is getting up early is more
important than learning late because the
The Anchor Point is to be there when
Hashem comes at the crack of dawn
to give us the Torah so better to get up
at five
than to learn until three and then sleep
till late if you had to make a choice in
that particular way now should the rep
be asked a very simple question
he says how could they sleep this is the
generation remember this is this is
before this is after they purified
themselves for 49 days
how could they sleep
and if they could go to sleep how could
they sleep late how could they oversleep
so the Remy says it's a different Pasha
that they were sleeping a deep spiritual
sleep they wanted to reach such a
spiritual madrega
that they felt they couldn't do so
within the confines of the physical body
and indeed it's recorded in many many
different niacin
that the nishamas in terms of all of us
but for Sadiq him it's more apparent
when it leaves the body it understands
ideas of Torah that it could never
really comprehend
within the confines of the body
so they slept the sleep of kadusha
so that their nishamas could have pure
godliness
without
the goof
interfering
so their sleeping was the shame shamayam
now we shouldn't use that as an excuse
to miss davening or whatever it is I'm
sleeping with James
for most of us maybe that's not going to
work but there is such a Muslim I'm
sleeping
huh so if that's the case what's the sin
the sin is that God says I don't want
you to reach kadusha by escaping the
Gulf
I want you to reach katusha within the
confines of the gulf that's the lesson
of Torah that's the lesson right they
made the mistake they were looking at
kadusha as asceticism as renunciation as
separation as repudiation of my
physicality
as opposed to the notion of taking it
and elevating it and this is all
connected with there with the
balotanya's you know Immortal line that
Hashem wants a derivative
wants to live in this lowly physical
world
he doesn't want to create his residence
apart from this physicality but within
the Ola magashmi within the hrhara
within the Hester within the
concealments
it's where he wants to reside so we
bring out that godliness even in the
most hidden places
right so again as I say this is a
bit of a technical in terms of Allah and
the like and yamchawach but it's a very
beautiful when you put all the pieces
together it's a very very beautiful
powerful thought which illustrates as
the rambam says the great posseck in
Mitchell
you must try to know Hashem
in every facet of your existence
in every aspect of your being to know
Hashem you know they tell a story now
this is a story that comes in uh like
all religions have their own version of
the story there's a Christian version
there's a Muslim version the Hindu
version and the Jewish version you'll
see an amount meaning it's not a Madras
it seems to be a folk tale my guess is
it probably was of Christian origin but
they give a Jewish version for it let me
tell you what the story is and that is
uh three people
and their lives were unbearable drudgery
all they did from morning to night was
cut stones and they Quarry
day after day after day
each person was asked to describe their
life
and each person who is doing the same
thing gave a different description
one person described their life is all I
do
is cut stones from morning to night
when I finally get home I have a piece
of bread I drop into bed
and the next morning I do the same thing
again meaning a life of drudgery
meaninglessness over and over and over
the same thing
if we know a parent's purpose at all
that's Story number one
Story number two
every morning I get up
and I work hard
so that my children will have a better
life than I have
and what gives me joy in my life is that
with every all the difficulties I'm
going through
I'm making things better for them
now that's a different perspective right
you're still a stone cutter and you're
still doing the same work and you're
still just getting home eating bread and
going into bed
but you've given yourself a tucklist
you've given yourself a purpose you've
given yourself something that you're
accomplishing and the third person even
made it better so this is where the
different religions have different
versions the stones were being cut for a
show
a cathedral a mosque
Taj Mahal you know put in whatever you
want to put in and he says every day I
get up and I glorify my creator
by building a temple through his glory
what's the point you have three people
they're all doing the same thing
and yet it all becomes different
what meaning do you put to your
activities
right you can look at it as meaningless
drudgery
you can look at it as glorification of
Hashem you can look at it as I said to
your family
right your mind
is like the frame that you put on a
picture right when you have a nice
picture you know that pictures look very
differently depending on how they're
framed
reality changes based on the frame that
you put on it
right so reframing is actually a major
aspect of both of Otis Hashem and how we
deal with our own traumas or
difficulties in life right you put a
different frame on it it looks different
it becomes a difference a different type
of type of reality so that was uh one
thought that I wanted to share with you
again I think it's largely based on on
the reveal that I I did add just some
other references
let me mention something else it's also
based maybe this is based on
everything's based on Chabad tonight
and this is uh based on you know we talk
about
um the Levine now levian have a
mandatory retirement age
from my perspective it looks like it's
far too young because but basically
levim work
they actually they start late right the
Liam start working from 30 to 50.
and they start apprenticing at 25.
and after 50
not at least for certain tasks certain
tasks not all tasks there is a
retirement age
so the mission in Hulen
makes a very very interesting
observation
about the difference between kohanim and
Levine
and it says what makes a Colleen
disqualified
is not what makes a lady disqualified
and what what makes a lady disqualified
does not make a calling disqualified
a lady is disqualified on the basis of
age
when the lady hits 50 he retires early
retirement
a calling is not a coin can if he's able
a Cohen can do the avoida at 60 70 80
90. a coin does not get disqualified by
age
only a lady
now conversely
what disqualifies a poem for a vote in
the basement physical blemishes
a broken leg a mum a mum
Apostles are coming
but you know a mom does not pass a
little baby I can still be a lady that
sings Even if I have a broken arm or a
cast and the like now the mishnah
derives it from the sukkit in other
words how you know this is very simple
because the Torah mentions age only by
levium
and the Torah mentions mum only by
kohanim
so it's automatically the case that
kohanim are puzzled because of H
and Levine are puzzle because uh I'm
sorry I'm sorry go on in Rapunzel
because of mom and would be in my puzzle
because of it so how you know it is is a
simple question but the question is what
is the logic of this why should there be
why should age be important
for a lady and not for a kind and why
should mum be important for a coin and
not for a living
so there is a husband here that's at
least Loosely based and it's
a grandson
and he says to follow me he says
go even Lady
represents two different aspects
of serving Hashem
the Cohen represents the one who
meticulously follows details and rules
anyone that studies the laws of corvanos
know
that there's no room in corbanos for
improvisation
spontaneity
creativity individuality
there is a Seder that has to be followed
and the Seder has to be followed exactly
and the smallest deviation
from the way things are done
can often be catastrophic the whole
sacrifice might be invalidated I mean
let me give you a small example of this
a Colleen must wear
big Dakota special garments when he does
the avoda now part of that means he's
not allowed to have anything extra if he
has what's called Yi turbo an extra
garment
it's puzzle so if the colony would like
to put on a nice scarf he's wearing be
they can also put a nice scarf in honor
of the base
the whole of Voda that he does is going
to be puzzled
but he said well I have to look like
every other calling yeah you do in other
words everybody except for the colleague
everybody dresses the same
so kohane represents the idea of serving
Hashem
by following the rules exactly
now there is a strength in that approach
but there's also a downside to that
approach
the strength of that approach
is consistency you're not you're not
affected by your moods right we have
different words sometimes we're inspired
sometimes we're not inspired
but if you have that consistency
you're going to do what you got to do
whether you're feeling up that day or
not down today because you're not acting
out of emotion you're not acting out of
passion you're not acting out of feeling
you're acting out of this is the way it
is
you know I remember when I was when I
was in Silver Spring but I also remember
growing up in in Hartford uh there were
there were Bell about them that I knew
who were not products of the Yeshiva
World because they they grew up before
there were yeshivas
as it were they went to public school or
tomatora
but the concept of missing a minion was
impossible they just wouldn't no they
just know every day you go to show I
mean I remember in my own community in
Silver Spring uh there was a a 95 year
old guy it would take him half an hour
to walk the show he walked to show no
matter what the weather if the weather
was bad in fact more than a half an hour
to watch the show but you know he didn't
even think of it as any particular you
know we said wow how heroic you know no
this is what you do
this is consistency you don't get
affected by the mood you don't get
affected by your emotions you do what
you got to do that's a wonderful thing
you stick to the plan
the problem is no so that's the
greatness of it problem is
that there is a risk that it might
become mechanical
it might become superficial you don't
have a feeling in what you're doing
and then it becomes a goof a body
without a neshama so that's Myla and now
Levy
represents the world of regish
the world of emotion
Shira zimra
singing
in fact Let me let me point out that
although it's true that eventually with
safer to heal him
these songs that the levium were
assigned were standardized songs but
that was not the original the original
plan was they would come in and say
whatever they wanted to say
right karaoke ready to come in you know
praise Hashem with your own words
and the whole concept generally of
Nagina Negan
is a world of emotion a world of feeling
a world of passion
so the coin represents the world of
rules
the Lady represents the world of feeling
and emotion
now let's look at the upside downside
the Myla of the world of emotion is
you're uplifted remember the Zohar says
the balotanya brings this that love of
Hashem and Hashem are the two wings that
bring your Mitzvahs up to shemaim
that's our goal that we should be
feeling people
the downside is
that when you are
a creature of emotion
your connection will fluctuate
with what you're feeling any particular
moment
right you see this a lot with teenagers
especially right adolescence
are very emotional hormones whatever the
reason is so there are times they're
going to cry in ecstasy
and joyously experience you know Hashem
then there are times you have to they
just don't want to go to show it all
they want to sleep till two in the
afternoon or whatever it is because
they're kind of running on emotion they
don't yet have the sense of this
consistency right that's part of
maturation is the notion of consistency
you know I go to work even if I don't
feel like it well I vote this Hashem too
I got to serve God because I'm in heaven
even if I don't feel like it the hope is
I'll feel like it but you know so what
if I don't then I don't
so
let's look at the so now based on this
dichotomy that the coin is a voter
sashem by following the rules
and the lady is the world of regish and
emotion we can Now understand
the Cohen
who follows the rules
age is not going to puzzle him because
when you have consistency you'll keep on
going
until it becomes physically impossible
mom can Embrace a much bigger category
Than Physical impossibility but a mum is
a paradigm of physical limitation
meaning the only thing that will stop
the coming
is physical limitation
age will not stop him because if
anything the more you continue something
the more you're likely to continue it so
that's why the Cohen's problem is
physical impediment
with the labia it's the other way when
you're living in the world of emotion
you can transcend even your physical
limitations now I know I don't you know
in these Labs on these Faith healers you
know so they get the guy out of the
wheelchair whatever it is and of course
a lot a lot of that is fake to be sure
but there is something to be said that a
powerful emotions can overcome physical
limitations
an example would be
sometimes you know these stories about
the mother the baby that gets trapped
under a car and the mother is able to
lift the car
I mean she may be in a hospital for the
next six months but at that moment
she'll do it the emotion is so powerful
So Physical limitation will not stop the
lady
what what can stop him
rootinization
sometimes you stay with it too long the
emotions Wax and Wane and therefore the
lady gets burnt out
with emotional intensity intensity
so it's age that is his problem
but not physical limitation
the coin gets better with age
but at some point the body may catch up
that's kind of the explanation to the
coin and the lady but be it is at night
this is sowed that there are two
modalities in a Voda sashem
so how does it apply to us in a
practical level the answer is
we have to build a mishkan for Hashem in
our hearts
this is the famous phrase from the safer
khered them it's been set to music
I build a dwelling place for Hashem
in my heart
and this is also the meaning of the
possible make for me a sanctuary
Hashem says so I will dwell
ham
in them in them not in the building in
them
so our goal in life
is to make ourselves
a Dwelling Place
him
when we build our mission
just like the Mishka need or the base I
make this needs
so in our mishkan that we built
we have to have kohanim and levim
we have to be the Cohen
who sticks to the rules no matter what
and we have to be the lady
who opens our hearts and our soul
feel the awe of Hashem and the love of
Hashem meaning we have to be both the
Colleen and the lady
because within our mission
we have to have both we have to have
quranim and Ravine right so this is an
explanation again based on uh the the
somersetic as to why the VM gets burnt
out by age
but they are not stopped by physical
limitation
a co-ed will only get better with age
because habit becomes more habitual
but the coin may be stopped by the
weaknesses of the of the of the body so
be it as it may though as they say
aravades to be both the coin and the uh
and the lady at the same time we need to
be the kind because inspiration is not
constant
so we have to have something that keeps
us going
even when we're not
passionate and excited and again that's
part of maturation generally that it
applies to many areas even outside of
Torah
but at the same time
we can't allow ourselves to become
automatons
and robots
and people who only focus on the trees
and not the overall Forest
we have to try to develop a personal
relationship with Hashem in fact I
remember years ago it was kind of funny
but um
there was a certain sad truth to it I
was once talking about
um having a relationship with Hashem
so if somebody said to me afterwards
they're very uncomfortable
to hear about having a relationship with
God it sounds too Christian
relationship with God he says Jews don't
talk about a relationship with God they
talk about relating to the Torah they
don't talk about relating to God
you know now there is a certain there is
actually a certain truth to that because
it was not knowable in the way that
you know a human representation would be
more knowable that that in fact was
maybe is the great attraction of
Christianity because by making God in a
human form you've made something more
accessible to me
that doesn't make it true of course but
you know but still the notion that I
should just separate my connection to
Torah from a connection to Hashem
is really pretty crazy actually because
the purpose of the Torah is to connect
us to our other Sparkle like even the
word Mitzvah uh certificate as it says
the word Mitzvah which we always
translate as Commandments is actually
connected to subsets is connection
Mitzvahs are connections
right and you have to think about how
you connect
to to our kardashburger and it's
something that even in our Yeshiva
educations we don't always talk about
I mean what the guy said is I think
a true not it's not true but it's a true
representation of a lot of people's
feelings I'm not comfortable about
talking about a relationship with Hashem
and that's something we have to strive
for in all of our Lives that's the
purpose of everything okay so thank you
for coming and you have a good wonderful
week
