Rabbi Yitzchak Breitowitz: The Chronicles of Jesus, 10th of Tevet and Three days of Sorrow

[Music] is anyone I hope everyone had a as they say a meaningful fast and CR to talk about actually I'm going to give you a post fast talk about the fast and what's interesting is that if you look at languages and there actually is a point that we want the wisdom of the Torah to be available to the world so they can learn from to simply condemn something because it made the Torah accessible to non-jews would seem not to be a valid point because that's part of the rest own Hashem now a second possibility might be that the Gemara tells us that the translators introduced certain distortions uniformed was into the translation for example they inverted the word order the beginning of the Torah is Bray shish barak in the beginning Gunn created but in Hebrew that could be translated the beginning created God which means God was created at the beginning of time so to avoid that misunderstanding they inverted the word order to clearly indicate God created the beginning another example fertilized egg and killing a 25 year old amen now halakhah doesn't quite say that a lotta actually says that something is not does not have the status of an autonomous human life until it's born abortion is not a capital offense abortion is a sin because you are preventing a potential from being actualized but not because it is an actualization in and of itself and the proof for that position point that if the mother is killed so that is an act of murder albeit unintentional there will be no financial liability for the loss of fetal life based on the principle that capital offenses cancel out financial liability if on the other hand the mother was not killed so all you have is the destruction of fetal life for that there's compensation and this is the basis of the Talmudic ruling that abortion is not a capital crime because if abortion were to be a capital crime there would be no financial penalty because that would also be a capital crime now the Septuagint has a radically different translation of the word of song and they connect the word the Hebrew was sown in a very questionable linguistic link jump they connect to the Hebrew word are sown with the Greek works word soma which means body and they translate the verse this way if there is an us some if the fetus already has arms and legs and they forms body then the abortion is a topical offense and there's no compensation and if the fetus does not have a forms body then it becomes a monetary offense which means that the Septuagint actually translates the foolish and to take a much more stricter position on abortion then halakhah actually does now what's fascinating is that although the Septuagint was completed by rabbinic by rabbis it did not become part of the Messara of the terrible passage not consulted by Jewish scholars and did not become part of the halacha tradition fascinatingly however the Septuagint had an enormous influence on Christianity many of the church fathers who knew he most be no person x2 as we call it today we're not really sure but he certainly was a lover of tradition he writes that in Alexandria every year the community would celebrate the anniversary of the completion of the Septuagint so what what rabbinic Judaism regarded as a tragedy they considered that to be a symptom you know the Kabbalah discusses are you allowed to write a Torah scroll in Greek now when you learn a gumar like that you wonder who would ever think of writing a Torah scroll Greek but this was a very practical question in a huge community like Alexandria you might not be able to find a bulk all right who could read it in Hebrew and they talked about that remember there's a huge description in the Gemara of the beautiful magnificent synagogue of Alexandria which was so used
