Rabbi Gedaliah Gurfein: The Brilliance of Nothingness.

[Music] the Lord said that on their own anybody who by the way I was ever into Gary Larson bar site comments ok so yeah very funny brilliant actually so he once in one of his introductions to his book he writes a big THANK YOU to his older brother who beat the living daylights out of him and as a result of it made him so crazy that that's why his cartoons were what they were because he said had he not done that this is what my cartoon would have been like and had like two dogs in a cat in a circle and there's a bowl on the ground and the cat says oh you have dropped the ball so any other as I feel like like we just don't like this whole thing of them are all the pig that now the cameras on oh ok so so the class okay by the way you guys are the victim of my now realizing that anything under 14 point letter size on my notes is no longer able to do without the glasses so I'll be switching back and forth yet but the the class tonight is called is you might have saw the the brilliance of nothingness and the subtitle is called when our own knowledge can be to our detriment and I thought that you know the nice thing about giving a class about nothingness is it can be really short because there's nothing to say I guess no maybe so the idea we're going to go into is take a very start of a kind of deep esoteric look at the whole idea of what nothingness is about and it says sort of funny because you imagine is we're going to see in a minute that by it's being called nothing Ness it's nothing so what does it mean what does nothing is all about but we're going to drill down on that and then switch through a couple of quotes from the Zohar that really nachman of breslov talks about that totally changes the concept of what nothingness is and to realize that nothingness could actually be everything miss in a way and then from there we're going to go from understanding that idea of nothingness in a new light as how does it relate to our own intelligence and what is the difference between the intelligence that we draw from that which is called the tree of knowledge versus knowledge or wisdom that we draw from the tree of life because it's interesting to note that in the tree of knowledge it's the knowledge of good and bad right and so therefore there's a when we talk about our knowledge as bad knowledge so that's something nobody likes to talk about since world perfect but obviously everyone of us has hopefully if you're alive a dark side and the dark side has its little fantasies and it has all of its other things that maybe come out over four years in therapy or maybe never come out or maybe come out an unfortunate way you spend the rest of your life in jail but whatever it is everybody has a dark side that's part of being human welcome to earth hope it's not your first time here but when you have that dark side so then at least a personally could hopefully at some point acknowledge that they're human and in acknowledging they're human they can identify the bad side right otherwise this becomes the Pharaohs syndrome Pharaoh said he was God I'm sure everyone knows the famous story here that maybe some of you were old enough to remember the groups like the SDS weatherman and other revolutionary moments when we would go and we would seize in the college campus you'd go in handcuffs like Marc Rudd and you would handcuff yourself to the door of the president and you wouldn't demonstration so the first time God sends Pharaoh Moses into Pharaoh he sends it right into the chamber where Pharaoh's sitting on the throne and so on but then know what comes after that Moshe is cutting him off on the way down to the river right because we know that if you're God you don't go to the bathroom so the King Pharaoh who was God therefore does not go to the bathroom he had a little royal fold in court and every morning about 4:30 in the morning while all of Alexandria was asleep you would see Pharaoh flying through the bushes down to the suddenly you know I was like whoa just what do you want and so he says let my people go so I'll make a deal let me go and I'll let your people go so that was that relationship because fallow had this ego this ego was I am beyond you know human weakness but we're not so therefore we can identify that part of our knowledge which comes from evil but can we identify that there could actually be part of our knowledge which we describe as good that could also be detrimental that's the key question and if that good comes from the ropes meaning it comes from the tree of knowledge as opposed to the Tree of Life it could be more problematic because the problematic part you can identify and deal with hopefully but the part which seems really positive this is who I am it's all part of my makeup that could be the most challenging to really look in the mirror other than Don Quixote and come to grips with what that could possibly mean so when we start to think about what is the idea of nothingness so let's go through like the common classical example nothingness is this sort of like void void were prohibited by God right what is this idea so I I'm gonna read a whole bunch of quotes tonight I got you I didn't get lazy I just got into the people's tombow and I just thought of playing that this little machine were you dropping coins you pull the one arm and gomorrah's come out so a has intimacy with a married woman other than his wife and the third is somebody who routinely calls somebody else by and bad nickname you know you kind of think if you would do Jewish trivia dance what are the three worst sins ah I don't know eating a little gooey part out of the ham bone on Yom Kippur now you're on the list here but when it comes to embarrass you somebody should I do it all the time he jerk get out here right that's bad news so here are three people that go to hell and don't come out of hell toast what qualifies that this doesn't mean that the people stay there forever however it says that most Jews go in and out of Hell as a passageway to heaven either have to just sorry I do this you'll get used to me I hope but I like to always insert little Jewish jokes as I go along so this one actually reminds me there's a Satmar above her and a kebab skirt which might not mean anything to you three religious Jews and they all are in a car accident they die and they go to person for the first person who embarrassed us somebody in public they do not go out of hell after a year rather they go to a place where there is neither good nor evil which is a place of nothingness right so there's there's kind of like a Talmudic source of this idea of nothingness you're not in heaven you're not in hell Rod Serling probably make all Twilight Zone episode add this but you're in nothing 9 you husband a person isn't nothingness such a person is it nothingness but that's what we would imagine nothing is to be just kind of nothing yes like the word I guess the good mornin of allosaurus brings it more back down to earth or nevados or says that when the world as we know it exists for 6,000 years and then there will be a 1000 year period of Shabbat which is like a macro micro relationship of the six days a week in the seventh day Shabbat so on however the first two thousand years are referred to as a period called nothingness because the Torah had not been given into the world therefore they were very spiritually elevated individuals such as sham and Avraham and Ava who could into utley understand and connect to meaning creation but there was no actual formal education directly from God to the world as to what it means to be involved in our purpose and creation you know it's interesting if those of us that make blessings in the morning I'm sure we all do but those of us that use traditional blessings as found in the prayer book will notice that one of the blessings there it says that God teaches Torah well I don't know just imagine you showed up here tonight and rabbi Aaron had a little poster obviously with no picture tonight's teachers God right and you come and there's nobody here but there's just kind of a little chalk moving on the board or something I mean what what really I've been learning Torah for like 40-plus years I never really remembered God is my teacher and so what does it mean that God teaches his nation Torah what is that I mean we're not stupid people here there's got to be some meaning to that and the answer is it's a very important answer is that God's classroom is the world we are in and the class is 24/7 and therefore one can learn through the experiences of our lives everything that God wishes us to be able to understand and their levels of it you know there's definite levels of wisdom there's a level of wisdom which is called intellect don't touch that it's hot well if that works that's nice but if the little kid didn't listen to mommy and then put his hand on the pot it got burnt and that's the next level of Education called experience so that which failed to learn intellectually person could learn experientially as a great rabbi who's also former president the United States Harry as Truman once said the only thing that you don't know about the future is what you forgot to learn from the past so therefore there's a wisdom behind creation then things are not chaotic if there's science people think that science is in conflict with towards just the opposite science is the proof of God because the fact that there's hierarchy and that there are sader and their systems and there's order that infers wisdom if it was a lack of order lack of wisdom then that would maybe suggest chaos right as Einstein once said the beginning of insanity is doing the second same thing a second time expecting the different results why is that called insanity because there's an assumption of science if you do this you get that it always happens over and over again so therefore that idea of God teaching in the world is because the world is created with the wisdom but when the wisdom is not accessible in a way then it's called nothingness that's the second Gomorrah and the third Gomorrah however in shabbos now begins to shift the definition of nothingness in a very interesting way and it quotes something many of you are probably familiar about I'm sure even those of you out there in video land and that is the famous quote from King Solomon where it says that King Solomon said in Kadosh toccata shemish there is nothing new Under the Sun hey and the mid-chest comes along and says what why does it say there is nothing new Under the Sun you see there's nothing new period why what is under the Sun infer that there's a different state of mind above the Sun in other words that which is below the Sun is a metaphor you'll see much later in the class is a metaphor linked to the idea of this world so above the Sun could also be above creation or higher worlds so in the higher world everything is new there's constant newness and so therefore if you want the newness of creation is nothingness in other words all of a sudden nothingness has now a certain substance if you will the substance of creation itself is nothingness in other words what God created if you will is nothingness I'll kind of run through this idea in a brief form it's a little bit too attentive but maybe it's kind of applicable here that is if God is Omni etc my god is the infinity of infinities God is everything anything you think God is you're wrong because it's more than that right so God is in everything so what was God missing that God needed to create what's the what I mean what was it beavis and butt-head what was it that the whole universe was worth creation what was it what is God missing a and what and what's it well that's a very interesting I would agree with you and we're gonna get to that that's very good I agree with that completely yes please laughs thank you exactly that's what God black and that's what he left was the relationship so God lacks problem with lack however is if God is lacking something's not God right big would mess with it but not God because God can't lack so therefore God creates the ultimate lack that the lack lacks nothing nothing there that word God lacks nothing and that's the perfect black it's only an illusion of lack so therefore the Qabalah they talk about symptoms symptoms the idea that kilo as if God contracts from a certain area in the universe and therefore it's as if there is no God in that area but that's impossible because if there's no John that area and God's no longer the infinity of infinities so God merely creates the illusion as if God is not in that area and where does that illusion exist here exactly and therefore it's all about creating selim elohim those entities ie us which are creating the image of God in order as a father to a child again as a metaphor only that there should be the relationship between those entities that have free will and of their own accord come back to God that's the difference between being a human being versus being an animal or versus being a robot that human being if it's stripped of its free will people say well there's God let him do a miracle that would be disgusting because that miracle would strip me of my free will right I mean what kind of free will is there but if I'm living in the situation where I have this like scale tipping both ways maybe God maybe not maybe yes and I continue work and push that through and now I come through the revelation if you wanted what God is all about which is the whole story of the hook-up then I come to the level on my own where I've built that relationship with God exactly so therefore but the beginning of all of that is this idea of the nothingness that God created this environment in this world which creates that feeling of there being nothing in order to really reveal something there's also hinted at in one of the names which is referred to as God which is called or aimed so the light which is without end now thank you tell you again that I always love when they like upstairs give me like the audiovisual support makes it more realistic I have to just I must thank dressed for a minute just cuz there's a lady in the back there from Amsterdam from Holland I was saying that I was invited this year I know creation itself now we're taking a step further now we must shift over to the more you mo the Gomorra comes up with a really which one of you guys are into studying good morning cannot definitely tree so the cedar tree is always a metaphor for a holy person and therefore what it means to say is that the voice of the holy person is often very difficult to hear because there's so much noise to try to drown out that sound of truth so therefore the sound of the son if you will the illusion of infinity right what's the biggest problem we suffer as mortals to realize we die but when we realize that we will die we become very humble that's a beautiful tool to become humble and therefore we become too humble we have room for God right that's what ego is all about right before John Wayne was God God says to the person filled with ego this body ain't big enough for the two of us if you're filled with yourself God says I'm out of here and that's where the word ego comes from Eagle is edging God out so therefore if a person is filled with himself there's no for God but a person's humble right as the cuts go Rebbe said there's nothing more whole than a broken heart so when a person is humble they can allow that godliness to come into them so this is what is talking about here that the noise of the Sun creates the illusion of the world that we live in and it Dwarfs all of the other commanded it cut his wire and you just see it drifting away that's sin where you got through it not you a person disconnects from God and they are lost from their place this idea of being lost from their place therefore is that the same idea it says when the gomorrah says when adam was created he was so tall that his feet went from the ground to his head which went to heaven but when he sinned he shrunk and the idea of course means that the human being in it's an art and made potential has the ability to master the universe to build and create i mean 200 years ago we took rope and we put a couple of logs together and that's how we sailed across the water and now 20 years later we have you know starships in outer space we have satellite bases what is that what happened to him view is unbelievable you just open your eyes how many years ago everybody had a horse your great-grandchildren saying well a hundred years ago everybody had cars that ran on gasoline wow that's really primitive right things are changing and moving an unbelievable speed because that's man man was created to go from him from the earth to the heaven but when man sins we become very small we lose our place we lose our identity and that's why Rebbe Nachman says that this idea of existing in a place called no place is a very interesting idea because the only Chetta the only area where sin can exist is in the framework of kindness sin only can exist in the realm of God's kindness how does that work because we use as an analogy fire is from the attribute of Justice a person touches fire they are instantly burned when the person performs a sin and is not instantly punished then that's not the attribute of justice that's an attribute of kindness because God is giving that individual an opportunity to repent to fix the mistake that they have made I give an example if you remember like from Road Runner or other great cartoons that we probably grew up on so coyote would be chasing Road Runner and Road Runner would stop right at the edge of the cliff and coyote would continue running out and then of course coyote would realize and then okay well don't try this at home but if you run off a cliff you don't get that little hang time it's just you know there's no like and you don't get the chance to do the facial expression it's just right so the idea of what happens in the company cartoon is that whole time when coyote is off the cliff is God's kindness that's kindness God's creating a miracle a miracle you know if you really want to think about what is the most incredible miracle God created in all creation it's the ability to sin it's absolutely the greatest creation because so mind-boggling how could God which is so not about sin a create and the governor asks in a brilliant way the governor says how could stolen wheat grow right so it's created in a way where there could be a possibility to sin it's phenomenal it's phenomenal and not only that there could be a possibility to sin which is already phenomenal but the sinner can continue living it's unbelievable that's extraordinary kindness of God that's what we do with it one hand we could therefore turn around saying ha ha no God see look I'm still alive but actually minds we have a story over the way way back in my Shiva days there was one particular rabbi had this boy that we all loved young people who was brilliant brilliant beyond belief and their stories about this kid when he was seven eight years old and once you know very religious Orthodox Jewish boy him and he went out in a Shabbos or a question of realizing how long that period of grace that God gives the sinner that the sinner has free will to conclude that there's no God and there's no justice and there no ramifications of actions or to realize oh my gosh look at this I have nothing that I deserve to be alive in my current state I have no merit whatsoever and yet I'm alive God is also and now I want to say thank you and I want to apologize for what I've done that is the power that happens and this is hinted at in two Hebrew words which I'll translate but they're composed of the same letters one word is called Scheffel which is I think where the English word chef comes from but I don't want to go down that road right now but Sheva is all about abundance it's where God just opens it up and the money comes
