Pesach and the Slaughtering of the Egyptian Deity with Rabbi Aaron Dovid Poston

anybody [Music] Shalom alaikum everybody Welcome Home to Torah a warm welcome back to the given a big rush and we are it's right before pesach so we're changing gears we're going to talk about not just the uniqueness the special aspect a very special aspect of the pesach offering but as anybody who is well read in Jewish thought Jewish philosophy Jewish knowledge knows that the pesach offering uniquely is representative of a foreign God yes the god of the Egyptians and we're going to see a very interesting reason why we roast why we roasted by fire and that is to show and symbolize and perhaps even cause Hashem to react by roasting the god of the Egyptians and I'll just make it a little bit more vague anyone who believes that their God is representative by the pesach offering it's roasted in fire so I hope that's a good enough tease for you guys to continue to listen to this year we deal with the clear car number one that's going to be the basis of the discussion and we're going to be impartial's bow it's chapter 12 and um if I'm not mistaken it's verse two and three and whatever well we're going to discuss how it works but keep this in mind I just want to make a one more last plug for the piska fund reach deep down into your pockets all right it's uh it's a Mitzvah to give for especially the Jews to give to needy people for the funds of for the needs of pay socks or they can afford to buy at least four cups of wine a little bit of meat cup potatoes right matzo of course that's the main thing and there'll be a link below so you can certainly contribute as much or as little as you want and let's get started so you also find the pages that we're going to be dealing with also in a link down below there's a link to a link to a link I know it's a little frustrating but once you get a handle on it you'll figure it out you just have to look for whatever Shear we're discussing you look at the year and you can go back into the um basically it's very organized on our website according to the years and according to the titles okay so if we open up in parsha's Bow that's Exodus chapter 12. first of the months of the year and in Hebrew it says like this this month will be to you right the beginning of the month the first basically rosh hodesh it'll be it'll be for you though rosh kotish of the first month of the months of the year and we have a tradition that Hashem actually showed Moshe what this new Moon looked like and we're kind of coming in the middle of this clear car so um in other words what I gave you is where we're going to start but I only uh printed out and where we're going to read so basically the prior paragraph was discussing such a concept that God is the creator of the world he's the one who began he's the cause of all causes he's the first cause so to speak and therefore we're picking this up Midway and the Clear Car wants to say we're going to get further reason for why Nissan is the first of the months of the months of the year now he's going to ask two questions we're really going to focus on the second question first question is how come out of all the misses 613 Mitzvahs the very first Mitzvah is to sanctify the not only the new moon but also to count Nissan as the first of the months but basically let's just say for the sake of Rosh hudish the concept of roshkosh and the second question the clear card asked is why is that the very first Mitzvah right next to what this book called the second mitzvah in other words why is there juxtaposition in this partial parsha's bow when it begins by telling us this is going to be the first month the rosh hodish the first day of the first month and that's a Mitzvah to count the months and to uh to sanctify roshkodesh and the second right away it's going to discuss the laws of the Corbin pesach so why is there a juxtaposition why does that become let's just say not just a second could be third and fourth depends how you count but basically the the concept of the Corbin pesach that's the sacrificial lamb why is that so important to be second so he begins by saying the explanation is as follows drum roll please Le fisha since the faith the belief system the religion of the Egyptians were as follows now what was the results left that's the constellation of Aries in other words is a lamb and Aries is an adult lamb we'll call him a ram for all practical sakes that the constellation of Aries is according to the faith of the Egyptians and perhaps other religions that the lamb is the all depends on which muscle which consolation which day what hour you were born in now we're getting into this idea I want you to go to um in Genesis chapter 46 verse 34. because there we have a here it is so on our way out of Egypt I wouldn't say on the way out of Egypt sorry on the way down to Egypt meaning Joseph was already in Egypt and the brothers come and join him in Egypt and he says to them make sure to tell Pharaoh when he asks you what is your occupation he says in for in the Torah says in 46 34 you shall say this is not God speaking this is Joseph speaking to his brothers your servants have been owners of livestock from our youth until now both we and our ancestors now the reason he told them to say that so that you may dwell in the land of Goshen the idea is that Joseph wanted to prevent intermarriage he did not want us to assimilate into Egyptian Society so he told the brothers when when pharah asks you what do you do for a living what is your occupation tell him this and the the verse goes on and says because all shepherds are abhorrent to the Egyptians Rashi says there because they the Sheep are their gods just to make that point bring that home a little bit and there's another verse in Exodus chapter 8 verse 22. that um when pharah says you know what you can go ahead do your sacrifices here in Egypt I'll let I'll give you the freedom to do whatever you want but you can't leave you can do it you can you can worship your God here so Moses responded to Pharaoh is it it is improper to do that for we will sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians to God our Lord will we sacrifice the deity of the Egyptians before their eyes and they not Stone us interesting the word sacrifice here is the same word means a uh an Abomination we're talking about we wanted to sacrifice our sheep and our goats and Rashi says over there what does it mean abomination of the Egyptians our slaughtering is a hateful thing to the Egyptians for they will see us slaughtering their deity okay so it's very clear to us at this point that the pesach offering has a representation of killing their God their deity I hope that's very clear okay so what was what would bother you right if you went to India and they asked you what are you doing you say I'm a cowboy you know I wrestle with uh with um with with Bulls all day long they're going to have a problem with that because that's their one of their deities so here in Egypt the clear car says you know it would not be proper for someone else right to lead the leader around right if you're if your God is a sheep and you are a Shepherd it means you are leading their God around and that would be inappropriate you you know in their society you're not greater than they're gone their God is the greatest thing and by you over lording and that's a word overlording right um controlling their God that would be an insult to them kirohahu because their God is the ultimate Shepherd alkane sivashem this is the very reason that God commanded us to slaughter this sheep we'll call it the Passover offering why the fish remember it's we even though we know why we have to count Nissan as the first of the months keep this in mind because God redeemed us there and we're counting the months always all year round to remember that we were redeemed in other words it should be the Forefront of our minds that Hashem chose us and redeemed us however the Egyptians also and many all around the world considered Nissan the ram to be the firstborn keep I want your ears to ring when you hear this that that is the firstborn of the constellations in fact that's when the world was created according to Ruby right according to the the Gomorrah there's a mock Locust Yeshua elazar and we're not going to go into that now but we do poskin at least according to testost that the actual world was created in Nissan so it's not far-fetched to believe for those of them of the world to believe that this constellation created the world that this constellation is the Forefront is the leader of the pack it all began with it it's the it's the firstborn of all of the constellations and therefore by actually slaughtering this uh sheep what's happening so the clear card takes us to Isaiah 24 verse 21. the part of the verse he wants to us to hear is read the whole verse but he's only really focusing on the latter part it is um it's Isaiah actually he's gonna sorry my mistake he's quoting the first part now and he and we'll examine it and then he quotes the second part of the verse because that will Enlighten us regarding the first part of the verse so the first part I already said in Hebrew it shall be on that day that Hashem will deal with the host of Heavens gift code is a visitation a visitation can be a good thing as God visited Sarah and told her the good news through the Angels however this word we're dealing with the word translated he dealt with right because is like um it's a judgment it's a judgment of sorts therefore Hashem will be judging the hosts of Heaven but then what is the rest of the verse saying then it says well it says Tell them at the Kings actually I don't have the whole Hebrew in front of me I just have what the clear car says aladdamate but the verse says and with the kings of the Earth on the Earth in other words God will then after he visits meaning he takes Vengeance he visits in a negative sense right uh the the heavens hosts on high then he will do what then he will visit the Kings on the earth of the Earth on the Earth that's referring who the kings of the Earth on the earth that's the firstborn of Egypt now happens to be listen to this in Australia astronomy when the Zodiac of that month enters and for the entire month the Zodiac the the constellation can be seen when 45 minutes before sunrise and the answer is because it's behind the Sun so exactly the words during kotish Nissan that's the time that the sun s-u-n enters the constellation of Aries so meaning Aries on the other side of the Sun and that's how it works and therefore we they made it it was made as the beginning of all the months of the year for us for the Jewish people that it should be it was made like this the first months of the year in order that we should remember be cognizant conscious of the fact that this was the leaving of Egypt and it should be always in front of our eyes constantly [Music] there is to be concerned and this is uh going to be uh fascinating because God gave us this Mitzvah God's also concerned about the mistakes that non-jews would make and even Jews through the non-jewish philosophers okay so there is to be concerned maybe from the fact that this myths was given yet that it allows space or place for people to make a mistake by saying the following maybe they would say in air quotes maybe it's because of the importance of this very constellation maybe that's why God made it the first of the months because that was the first of all the constellations this is the very reason the clear card says is why God gave us immediately so this mistake cannot be made that therefore commanded upon us the Living God immediately call rowing to slaughter the pesach offering in front of everyone anyone can see it and it would be taken on the 10th of the month now just I want to get some background here with this first Mitzvah of this is the first day of the months of the first month this actually took place because it says that Mo that Moses was shown what the new moon looks like so that was nine days was ten days before the 10th okay so the on the tent itself which I would ask for a drum roll but on this year it's going to fall out on Shabbos guess what the year we left Egypt it also fell out on Shabbos and that's going to be a main topic of today because we're talking about meaning the main topic we're going to talk about it's not just the pesach offering but what exactly happened on the 10th day of Nissan which fell out on Shabbos three thousand three hundred plus years ago okay so he says like this and the command was we were commanded to take this Lamb on the tenth day of the month now what is the 10th an average month has 30 days so the first 10 days is considered as it's getting stronger and stronger I guess as let's say the middle 10 days it's kind of weakening a little bit it's staying strong and then on the last 10 days it's going down they call it waxing and waning okay so basically during the first third third which is the first 10 days of the month he has a Mazo yote bitakpo that's when the Mazel is either its strongest or it's most strong at that time and yet this God had write this deity this fake news deity right it didn't have any power it didn't have the power to save the actual sheet which it controlled because it was represented by the sheep and it could not even as we're going to see on the 10th day we were told to take it and tie it into onto our bed post in in the bedrooms in the innermost room of our house and watch it for four days it's all together five days it'll say four days because you're gonna Slaughter on the 14th towards the end of the day and then we're gonna roast it in fire so it couldn't even save itself right and through this procedure everybody will come to recognize and know IES that there is an Almighty that there is a higher authority than any other authority okay that he is the most powerful of all powers okay meaning Hashem [Music] that's why the Mitzvah of sanctifying the new moon came first that's the only way we could come to understand that you have to take it on the 10th the myth was to take the Sheep on the tent now I want to just clarify something that was then that was a one-time Mitzvah to take it on the 10th and examine it and tie it to your bed post and whatnot the truth is it still has to be examined but not necessarily in your possession not that you have to take it three days in advance or four days in advance that was a one-time thing so um let's go on so the fish is since that God commanded us to take this sheep on the 10th of the month our Cain who truckloadia did I skip something no um our King who tracked therefore it was necessary to inform us that's the whole reason for the and to count the months to inform us from which day you should begin to count those 10 days so you finally arrive at the 10th day and that's what Moses said that's what God said to Moses right he said to him just like this you will see it and you will sanctify it and we knew this was passed on father to son Rabbi to students and hedrin to the people ever since that day onward that's when you count these 10 days and what does it inform us of who shot to inform us of the weakness of the should be circumcised and then he may draw near to perform it and he shall be like the native of the land no uncircumcised male may eat of it so it's actually a preparation for the um for the eating of it as well okay we're not going to get into obviously the midst of circumcision means a lot more than that it's actually a covenant it's an everlasting Covenant it's a holy thing and we're not going to go there right now but in in this context that the Dom there's two there's two uh concepts of blood one is the damila as a preparation for the eating of it and then we have an interesting gemara and I have the Rashi here that quotes him I think also and and okay so this is the good this is what it says [Music] okay so what does that literally mean I want to start this rushing from the beginning so it says like this the idea of this this is by the way it's on um it's in Exodus chapter 12 verse 6. so 12 6 says like this [Music] it shall be yours for the examination until the 14th day of the month the entire Congregation of the Assembly of Israel shall Slaughter in the afternoon um I just want to know did we go through um the early you know what let's just start at three I just want to get that out not out of the way because that's going to be one of the main verses uh speak to the entire assembly of Israel saying on the 10th of the month they shall take for themselves each man a land or a kid for each Father's House a lamb or kid for the household so yes now if the household will be too small for a particular lamb or a kid then what you do is you get together with your neighbors okay I want to go down to verse six it shall be yours for examination until the 14th day of the month the entire Congregation of the Assembly of Israel shall Slaughter in the afternoon okay Merit what does it mean it should be for examination or for safekeeping Rashi right away says this is a lotion of pikur Biko means an examination okay it requires an inspection for a blemish four days before its Slaughter now why was the designated animal taken four days before its Slaughter something that is not required in the Passover sacrifice of later generations it was just that year romancia the son of harash used to say and this is the quote behold he God says and I passed by you and saw you and behold your time was the time of love this is a quote from Ezekiel 16 8. okay now what is that referring to it's referring to the oath that I swore God swore to Abraham that I would redeem his children the the time has arrived but they the children in Israel had no Commandments in their hands in other words they had no merit first of all we were all also Idol worshipers but what Merit did we have we had no merit in our hands with which occupy ourselves in order to be redeemed those words we're going to keep in mind they didn't have any Merit in their hands and wish to be redeemed we also see in Ezekiel chapter 16 verse 7. just one verse prior says but you were naked and bare we didn't even have those we'd have no Mitzvahs so God gave us two Mitzvahs according to this rashi's quoting rumacia he gave us two misses the blood of Passover and the blood of circumcision right Mila um Okay so I'm going to save the latter part of this Rashi for a few minutes um let's go back into the Clear Car where he mentions this idea and he says the kashal devara this quote that Rashi just saying in Hebrew it says means withdraw pull away and then purchase for yourself so the clear card explains this is what Rashi means mishku draw away from by taking the pesach lamb taking it meaning to be slaughtered you you're you're drawing yourself away first you have to draw yourself away be willing to slaughter be willing to think new ideas get rid of these ideas wash your brain out okay remove yourself from a vote of Zara that's what the word mishku means and then take for yourselves the Sheep as a Mitzvah of in other words it's a positive Mitzvah it's an action moving forward now recognize or celebrate the 10th every year the 10th of Nissan as this unbelievable well we're going to see there was a Miracles that happened we're going to talk about these Miracles so why aren't we calling the Shabbos might want to say why aren't we calling the 10th of the month why are we focusing on Shabbos no matter what happens to be this year it's the 10th but it could be the ninth could be 11th and yet we're going to celebrate as the as the ashokanark says because of the miracle that happened on it Shabbos not the 10th it's very strange we all know it happened on the 10th and that was like a big deal because God said you're going to start counting the whole idea was to count till the 10th happens to be that 10th with Shabbos so any other year it doesn't have to be it's not necessarily Shabbos and yet we're celebrating Shabbos we're recognizing Shabbos we're calling Shabbos the great Shabbos why because the miracle that happened on it on Shabbos not the 10th obviously it was the 10th but that's the point here it's because Chavez so let's find out the Fantastic power that Shabbos has in and of itself by the way so the the Macabre we just read the Macabre the Rama mentions that there's a Min hike to sell over to read over parts of the Haggadah on Shabbos afternoon after minha Ela avadimain from the very beginning of we were slaves and carry on until we mention himself or herself to a particular sheep and when the Sheep is actually slaughtered it has to have the the Cohen the person bringing it in mind the list of the people it's counting for so in that sense every Jew has to be involved in bringing even though they're not the actual one bringing to the temple to be slaughtered he had 60 million Jews so you brought a million Jews brought the sheep and on average probably 15 16 people were counted in each sheep very important to know that so he says that each Jew each Jew took a set for its pesach and Charo they actually brought it into their home on the 10th which was a Shabbos by the way and they tied it they put a nut they tied I guess to a string a rope the Sheep to their bed now just like the verse said it actually says right on the 10th of the month shall take a person meaning each person they said to the house of their fathers now the Egyptians saw they saw all this happening the Egyptians said why are you doing this now why would they ask first of all we're gonna see they already knew that the Jews for 190 years we were in Egypt we ate sheep we ate them so what's the big deal must be because we told them we're going to offer it to our god that was already uh I think uh Beyond reason for them so but maybe also because it was Shabbos we said a few weeks ago in our own dabbing we say yes that Moses was overjoyed in the gift of his portion which is Shabbos because he went to Pharaoh in the very beginning he was very worried about the Jewish people we're talking about before he ran away before God even approached him to become the leader of the Jewish people he was already concerned he told Pharaoh you know people can't treat their slaves like this are going to die this is a big investment for you you should give him a day off so they live he said go ahead you choose the day and he chose Shabbos knowing Moses knew Sheba was a very special day and he got the Jews off from working on Shabbos so the the Midstream the Egyptians knew that the Jews kept Shabbos to a certain extent to what extent I don't know but apparently they knew that we don't handle sheep and that we don't tie knots listen to this so the missions saw what they were doing and asked why you're doing this the Shibu and you know what the Jews answered this is another drumroll moment le chakato le Shane pesach the mitzvahlenu we're gonna Slaughter this sheep for the sake of Passover as amidstv as a command that God can put upon us now what happened they couldn't speak their teeth became numb or dull remember those they couldn't react and we're going to see different ideas what does it mean they couldn't react well they didn't react ing on the fact that we were going to slaughter their gods God didn't allow them to say anything so is this the miracle perhaps okay the miracle was we did something so drastic so revolutionary so against the norm killing their God and they were not able to do anything or say anything [Music] now from the very fact that that year the 10th of the month fell out on Shabbos I can cover Liquors therefore the rabbis established that we're going to call that Shabbos to come to Professor always all generations not just that Shabbos but all Shabbos is to come for pesach as Shabbos okay then the uh the mission Brook continues just regarding saying the and minhas on Shabbos because that was the beginning of the Redemption and all the Miracles ah so I'm gonna say we already had 10 plagues well let's say at this point nine According to some only eight we'll see but we already had such tremendous amount of Miracles that took place so what do you mean it's the beginning so we're going to see some really interesting kabbalistic ideas of what we do here will elicit a response from above from Hashem so hang on we'll get to it what I want to do now is go to the next page which is the drushas of darshu so we're going to deal with some of these very interesting ideas and I hope that you will be uh you're paying attention listen to this so as the mission of Brewer quoted because of the miracle that took place what miracle that we shected their gods and of course they couldn't do anything about it or they didn't do anything about it and on that year that was the 10th of the month it fell out on Shabbos and the rabbis established called the Shabbos before pesach always Shabbos hagado okay now we're going to go through a lot of reading there's an additional answer reason that toastless gives mushroom there was another miracle that took place at the time that the Jews
