Why do we care so much what strangers think? In our minds, we imagine strangers to be objective. We think that people who know us, they can't really be objective. We can't really trust their opinion. It's like when your mother tells you, "Oh, but you're so handsome." Right, thanks, Mom. You have to say that. A stranger though, they don't owe you anything, so they must be telling you the truth. But, here's what I want you to know. Strangers aren't objective, either. Because when a stranger meets you, they're not reacting to you, they're reacting to all of the preconceived emotional associations that the image of you triggers in them. They have a whole history, and they see you, and it reminds them of something from their past, and in fact, that's the reason for the intensity of their reaction. Because it doesn't make sense. Why should they be reacting so intensely to you? You're just a stranger to them. But, the reason why their reaction is intense is because they're associating you with all the things that the image of you instantly associates with in their mind. You don't have to give too much credence to the opinions of strangers, either, because they're also completely biased and subjective, and they're not reacting to you, they're reacting to what you remind them of, and you don't have to take their criticism or their rejection very seriously at all.
