Why won't she look at me? Rabbi Yaron Reuven says some men attain success beyond their wildest dreams, but there is a certain type of woman who will never look at them, or even acknowledge they exist. And these men who think they have it all can't stand it! The successful that is guy dating these girls doesn't make any of them his wife, maybe for the day or the week, but eventually he replaces them. When the successful, but impure guy that thinks he has it all has an encounter with a holy person. HaShem sends him a personal rebuke and he is disgusted, disgusted by himself once he sees what holiness is. This holy man doesn't have 10% of the physical assets of the successful man, but yet his children call him abba (father), they're respectful, they don't swear, they care about him. This successful guy finally realizes he has garbage. No righteous woman will ever look at him and his filthy self with the way he dresses and the way he talks. And he is disgusted with himself, because he could have had a righteous modest wife, if only he would have controlled his desires: stayed away from drugs, fame, materialism, promiscuity and physical desires. Balak is disgusted with his current life because he sees the holiness of the Jewish people. Balak thinks, if this holy nation was homeless and struggling, fine! But they're not! They're successful, they're winning, they're defeating nations and giants like Og and Sichon, the same nation that defeated me! Am Yisrael wasn't looking to go to war, we don't just go to war because we want your land or we like the way the flowers look over there. Balak is scared, because he thinks, "If you're powerful, that means you want everything". Such is the mindset of the impure. The Beit HaLevi says many people's anxieties come from a lack of Bitachon in HaShem (confidence in God) and they are the cause of their own suffering. Punishment for a lack of Bitachon is having the exact thing you were anxious about happen, measure for measure. Balak realizes Og and Sichon beat him because of Bilaam, so even though Bilaam was his enemy and killed many of his people, he's willing to pay him anything to have him try to curse Am Yisrael. As the Rabbanit says, "If they'll do it for you, they'll do it to you!"
