Why is "Thou Shall Not Covet" in the 10 Commandments? - Jeremy Gimpel: The Land of Israel Fellowship

this question was given to me by Jay from Dallas in the United States and here's what he says dear Jeremy you spoke about the 10km covered in relation to American culture and I absolutely agree but as I rewatched the session I couldn't help but wonder why did the command to not covet rank in the top ten commandments at all you shall not hate your brother in your heart or maybe love thy neighbor as thyself seem more fundamental can you please help me understand more and I think that is a fantastic question although it was the only one that was asked out of the fellowship I really like that's a really good challenge let's dig deeper into that because we're here we were just tie like it just so much interconnects about like here I am living my life and I could covet Arnold Schwarzenegger and like the a great fit and like fitness thing that he's in but there's like a teaching here in the in the ten commands like wait a minute really you should not even be looking at someone else's wife at their house at their money at their any it's it's so fundamental it's of the ten commandments so I think first we really need to understand the Ten Commandments it is the summary and foundation of the whole Torah if you are not living by the Ten Commandments it doesn't matter if you're a Jew or a non Jew I mean I hate to be exclusive but you're out if you've murdered someone you're out if you're stealing you're out if you're worshiping idols you're not in relationship with God there's like it's just like the fundamentals of reality are the Ten Commandments honoring your mother and father an adultery it just it's it's all there it is if you are you know I know that rabbis like to talk about the Noahide laws the seven laws of Noah I the 10 commandments that God gave us the Ten Commandments for that let's just say if you are not keeping the Ten Commandments you're out you've gotten an actual F in life that's it you've you're out of the game and so think of the Ten Commandments those tablets that's what was in the Ark of the Covenant those are the core values and spirit of the Torah now if those are the fundamental statements because they're not Commandments they're not Commandments I am the Lord your God who brought you out of Egypt that's not a command that's the first commandment is not a command at all in Hebrew they are statements they're called Deeb wrote their words from God and those words are meant to hit us not only as a command but it's a framework of how we're meant to see reality meaning the way we are meant to relate to God is a God who brings us out of slavery he introduced himself to us in that way meaning I'm not just a God that created the heavens and the earth no no I'm following you and if you're in trouble I am here to save you I'm in direct relationship with you a personal God that has a name Here I am I'm nice to meet you it's not just a cosmic God of the universe no no no he brought the Jewish people out of Egypt because he promised to one specific family that he would watch over them and then teach the rest of the world that he watches over them because if he watches over us why were we chosen that's just a that's the fundamental reason we were chosen in order to teach the world that they could be chosen as well and it's like and if you enter into the covenant with Abraham you attach yourself to the tree of Israel you attach yourself then you are now being watched over as well anyone that wants to enter into a relationship with God is able to be watched over and have a relationship with him that's the fundamental first statement that he's a God that has a relationship
