Lately I've been having a lot of
conversations about why there's such
insistence specifically on marriage and
not just on being in a relationship
without marriage. So, without getting
too deep into Judaism for a moment, but
in a nutshell, according to Judaism, the
purpose of our lives is our own personal
correction, to work on our animalistic
side. So, if we don't understand and
accept the idea that we came here to do
the work and to improve ourselves, of
course we wouldn't want this. That's why
marriages also don't last, because we
just don't feel like putting in the
work. We just want our own peace, our
own fun, our own comfort, and whatever
feels good and flows for us in a
relationship. As long as I'm having fun,
no one's bothering me, and no one's
demanding too much from me, then cool, I
stay. But when it starts to bother me a
bit and demand something from me, then I
bail and go back to my own fun. So,
forgive me if I'm maybe not that cool,
but I still insist on marriage and not
just a relationship. When people say
that marriage is work, what they mean is
working on myself, not on the marriage
itself. If I still choose and agree to
work on myself on the giving and
self-effacement that it requires of me,
we realize the absurdity that nowadays
people on dates and at the beginning of
relationships are embarrassed to say
they want to get married and build a
home, because it makes them seem anxious
and desperate. How did the highest and
most noble desire in humanity become
something to be ashamed of? There are
endless boundaries, rules, and
commitments in marriage, and in a world
where we all continue to sanctify our
obsession with freedom and comfort, it's
obvious that the idea of marriage won't
be so popular.
