Why doesn’t religion prevent people from being addicts?

so if I claim that addicts are in need of spirituality then seemingly how come people who are religious who already have faith who already have God how come they can become addicts and in fact you see many addicts in the religious community so it seems to sort of disprove that whole notion that spirituality was the missing component so let me answer like this I've had the experience many many times where somebody goes to the rooms of recovery and they come back they complain and say the people there are so spirit spiritual how come when I go to my place of worship to my faith community the people over there are not so deep and spiritual what's going on over here I primarily work within the Jewish community so that's where I hear that complaint but I've heard that complaint from people of all faiths coming from all religions that they see this stark contrast between the Deep spirituality they find in the rooms of recovery with what they experience in their place of worship it's a great question it's a valid question my answer is very simple when you get together a room full of people for whom spirituality is not about being a good person it's not about fulfillment it's not about inspiration but literally it's life and death they are there literally because if they do not remain spiritually fit they will die today you're going to encounter a whole other level of seriousness which you cannot compare to what happens in a place where people are getting together to worship because they think it's a nice thing because they think it's a holy thing it's a Pious thing so what I tell addicts in recovery who come from a faith community I tell them take this earnestness and this intensity of spirituality that you discovered in recovery and bring it back to your faith community and who knows maybe the whole reason why this has to be part of your personal journey is so that you can taste real spirituality and bring it back to your community and share it with them
