In my community, getting your kid a passport isn’t about vacations. It’s about survival. It’s been passed down from parents and grandparents who knew what it meant to be forced out with nowhere to go. Some even keep a suitcase packed under the bed, just in case. That fear is real, and it shapes how we live whether people outside the community understand it or not.

Friends of mine who aren't Jewish make
fun of us because we got this kid a
passport the first second that we could.
Like an international passport and we
did that for all of our kids. And
everybody I know in the Jewish
community, we all get our kids passports
like that. Why? Not cuz we're neurotic
Woody Allen types. It's because we've
all had it ingrained into our psyche by
our parents, by our grandparents, by our
teachers that if things get bad here, we
need to be able to run. The Jews of Nazi
Germany made the mistake of not running.
We've been thrown out of every country.

place, but I definitely have friends who
actually have a suitcase packed under
their bed at all times just in case we
need to run in the middle of the night.
I don't think people process like the
fear in our community. That's like the
pernitious version of the of the claim
that someone else is replacing us and no
amount of empathy will get us past that
fear.
