...we know what G-d's response will be

there's a speed trap ahead no one's speeding we're all sitting in traffic let me flip the camera just to show you what just happened here well you can't really see anything but yeah it was hard for me to get onto this exit all right i am sitting in traffic and we are studying this week or have been studying this week the third torah portion in the book of numbers this torah portion contains chapters 8 through 12 and what we are learning about here takes place on the first of nisan and if you're at all familiar with the hebrew months nissan is the month before er in chapter one back at the beginning of the book of numbers this very book that we're in the events recorded there in the torah take place in er the 11th century commentator great sage holy topic rashi from here we see that there is no chronological order to the terror but rashi points out something else very interesting and that's that in this particular instance the reason that hashem chooses to record these events in chapter 9 verses chapter 1 when really it took place before what we've learned about in chapter one is because hashem doesn't want to start the book of numbers with the recording of something shameful that reflects unwell on us the jewish nation here we learn about something dishonorable that we did and hashem doesn't want to open the book that way well what what was dishonorable that we did i mean i know we made a lot of mistakes in the desert but come on like what's going on here this particular part that rashi mentions this about is the passover offering that god commanded that we bring on passover in the desert and we did it we fulfilled hashem's command well rashi says that what was to our discredit was that this was the only passover offering that we offered in all our 40 years in the desert this was the only one okay so new question um how is that dishonorable this was the only time that god commanded us to bring this offering this was actually an exception because normally hashem said that the obligation to perform the ritual of the passover sacrifice only takes effect upon us when we enter the land of israel and of course during the 40 years that we were in the desert we were in the desert not in the land of israel so this was an exception to the rule why is it disgraceful why is it dishonorable why is it to our discredit that we only did this offering once this was the only time we needed to well my friends the answer is a very important one to take to heart this is highly pertinent for every single one of us right now it's not like a lesson about passover or or anything like that after we brought the passover offering there was a group of us that well didn't and therefore came to moses came to maisha complaining demanding give us an opportunity to do this mitzvah which we totally missed maisha went ahead and being moses he just like rings up god and says what do i do with these people they really want to do this mitzvah and hashem loves it and hashem says there's going to be a new mitzvah the second passover offering for all those who missed the first passover offering there will be another opportunity but the point is hashem gave us a new mitzvah because we demanded it [Music] this is why the fact that we only did the passover offering once throughout our whole 40-year trek in the desert is less than noble because you see the power that we have we we should have because we could have and therefore we should have demanded from hashem let us do this mitzvah yeah we can only do it officially when we enter the land of israel but the same way you had us do it once and you commanded us please command this again please command us again the reason this message is pertinent is because we must demand mashiach from hashem commanding mashiach from hashem is so similar to this incident where we demanded to be able to offer the passover offering even though we had missed it the first time to the point that we can call it an extension of that demand and thereby we know exactly what hashem's response will be which is yes absolutely which is moshiach because what was that we were asking hashem to be able to perform a mitzvah and that is exactly what we're doing when we ask for mashiach we are saying hashem right now we are unable to perform so many of your mitzvahs for example just because we don't have the holy temple so send this mashiach so we can not just do one more mitzvah but so many more so get in and demand mashiach in your actions by increasing in the joy in your life and the love for your fellow study some more torah do another mitzvah with more enthusiasm and of course verbally as well demand from hashem hashem it's time and of course we know what hashem's response will be
