the
hey good day folks welcome everybody
back to beyond the seven live from
jerusalem with rabbi aaron david poston
i'm
so enjoying this class as he's
transitioned to teach us
the 48 ways uh this will be our third
installment and it's
an exciting exciting lesson i really
appreciate how deep he's actually
unfurling this for us there's so much to
learn so much to
to draw from and let's just tune right
in see how the rabbi is doing
rabbi poston you've got the microphone
sir i'm going to leave it in your
capable hands
thank you dan thank you dan here got the
microphone
the invisible microphone the wireless
microphone
well shavuotov everyone we are now in
number three of the 48 ways
to wisdom in other words why we're doing
this as part of beyond the seven
is because we spoke about the idea of
seven
no hyde principles laws that have many
subcategories
and as far as i'm concerned i'm
encouraging you all to go deeper into
the seven
of course we won't prevent you or stop
you from going beyond the seven
horizontally and accepting other misses
but the main focus is going deeper into
the seven accepting them on a higher
level
in a deeper level and of course who
wouldn't want wisdom right
if you uh if you were asked what do you
want riches
or wisdom so what would you say we
already know what
a famous jew would say that would be
king solomon
right he would take the wisdom over the
riches and what is the result
you get the riches this is how we ended
off uh i believe that's how we ended up
uh last week that if you're looking for
the wisdom
you will be blessed in everything
right you'll get all your dreams should
come true
right if you have wisdom you have
everything
and the torah is wisdom right wisdom
came before everything right the word
god looked into the torah into the
scripture and he created the world
the the we call it lash nakodesh and
people know it is hebrew but
lush and hakodish i i had one comment on
my last one of my last classes someone
was upset
and wrote a comment they can't believe
that the rabbi is translating
i couldn't really understand what
they're trying to even say translating
from the hebrew to the english
what do you expect the originals in the
hebrew the originals in the lash
so this tonight's topic is called ariha
which means arrangement on your lips
what does that mean what does that mean
so
of ravnoch weinberg in his famous book
remember this series is based on a
mishna in percyavote
chapter six uh missionary number six
that there are 48 ways to wisdom when
the jews left egypt
we it took 50 days it took 49 days till
we're ready to receive the
the torah 48 ways
were 48 ways in order for us
to accept certain changes in our lives
in order to
receive that wisdom at the revelation
now right they there's different types
we discussed this
the the the one that i like right the
type that i appreciate i appreciate all
right to keep the laws but there are
some to keep them out of um
i'm just a a natural logical conviction
this is they're called the wise they are
called the wise amongst the nations
but they don't necessarily receive the
world to come
the ones that receive the world to come
which is the real the real deal here
are the ones that understand and accept
the revelation at mount sinai
so why not right why not go along with
the jews so to speak
in in um in their journey
towards acquiring wisdom on whatever
level
you you're ready to accept it so i'm
is the third of the 48 ways saying it
out loud that's how the rabbi translates
it
i would have you know literally
translated as a
arranging on your lips arranging your
lips what does that mean if this is one
of the ways to acquire wisdom we should
try to understand what does that mean
whether it's saying out loud which i
totally accept and like
you should know that if you ever go to a
baked madras
baby josh is a study hall the decibel
level
is just unbelievable right you would
expect to walk into a
room full of books right like a library
and what do you do when you walk into a
library you make sure your phone is on
uh silent right if you have anything to
say to anybody you're going to make sure
you do it in a whisper
right but when you and my first time
walking in i was astounded i couldn't
believe
there were groups everyone was with
another pair like a
haruta pairing off and they were
um it was like they were fighting over
a book you know it was like what would
you call it a courtroom
every two people were like in a
courtroom screaming at each other
trying to clarify trying to um
define their terms trying to tell the
other
you're not hearing me you're not seeing
the word you make you know you're not
reading it right whatever it was
and it's like metal on metal barzell on
barzo
that's how you stretch that's how you
sharpen a knife right that's how you
sharpen a sword
that's like and the sparks were flying
that's what happens right
man the sparks were flying and the
decibel level is just so high
and so we're going to talk about how
this tool can be used and i'm going to
call it a tool
of arranging on your lips so there's so
much to say
i actually thought i was going to cover
two of the 48 ways in one night
and after i got through um some of the
sources i just went deeper and deeper
and i said there's just no way
i gave up on trying to accomplish number
four so we're going to stick just to
to this tonight okay
so from potential to actual in other
words
first of all my rap one of my rabbis
told me um
yosef yasak learner he was in charge of
the speaker program at ishitar when i
when i received my ordination he said as
a rabbi
there's certain things that you think
that you don't say you know you don't
have to say everything that you think
okay and not everything that you say you
should write down
and not everything you write down should
you publish
so think twice before you know there's a
lot of guards
against our um speaking without thinking
and the teeth is going to be one of them
we're going to talk about tonight
the lips the teeth and so therefore
whatever is going to come out of your
mouth hopefully you have thought about
okay
so when potential is the thought and
then into actuality and believe it or
not we're really talking about something
real i'm going to talk about some
certain certain scientific
um research that has been done into
speech
okay so that's part of what we're going
to discuss tonight
but just to begin with what is man man
is different from all the animals and i
think i've discussed this a little bit
in the past
if you go to genesis chapter 2
verse 7
chapter 2 verse 7
says and the lord god for
man of the dust of the ground and he
breathed into his nostrils the soul of
life and man became
a living soul okay so you translate it
as the soul of life mine is the breath
of life but either way it's called
nishmatrain
there's no doubt about it it's also the
same word for soul
so so either way you look at it right
it's the soul of light the breath of
life
however the latter part the last four
words in hebrew the adam le nefesh
guess what all the other animals at
least three other times
is described in the in the part in
genesis
for all the other animals as nephesh
kaya
nefeshka means a living being that's
true they're living beings
but what separates man why are we
different because we have a nepheshchain
now interestingly enough let me just
read the rashy on that
so when it says a a living a living soul
an ephesian rashi says
cattle and beasts are also called living
souls but this one of man
is the most alive of them all because he
was given additionally
he was given intelligence and speech
deya the word daya means seijo like real
intelligence and dibor dibor is a word
for
speech so that's what separates us from
the animals
now ankalis is a famous convert believe
it or not
he was a pretty high up general
officer in the caesars army i don't know
if you know the story it's a beautiful
story look it up just type in
uncles who was a convert in
most magnificent magnificent story i
don't really want to
divert now so i suggest if you never
heard of him you don't know
anything about him look him up but
through
kodesh to the holy spirit he translated
the hebrew into the vernacular what
the language people spoke and that was
aramaic
and he had the help of the hashem it was
miraculous
but when he calls this um
what he basically um
okay i just want to mention something
else about that person asking me why i'm
translating
first of all there's no such thing as a
translation there's an interpretation
meaning every translation is an
interpretation and if i'm giving a class
i'm giving over a certain nuance and
they're
necessary to show you the original
hebrew and then explain
why that's a nuance so ankalos does
exactly that when he describes what this
nismus
in aramaic he says it's a ruach
malala which means a speaking spirit
and that with that is what separates us
from
the the other animals why am i remember
we're talking about arrika
time the arrangement of the lips if
that's not
speech i don't know what is what does it
mean arrangements of the speech
how i bark at the full moon when i'm a
werewolf i mean
we're talking about speech here we're
not talking about noises right not a
dolphin
or a whale that make these screechy
sounds under the water
where we're talking about a higher level
of communication
so we're talking about bringing the
potential which is the thought
out into the world and it's through
heaven
through breath and that breath is the
breath of life that
where god breathed into us so to speak i
mean i know exactly what that means uh
so when we when we breathe out we speak
it's also through breath that's godly
there's something godly about it
and it's also bringing it into this
world it's actually
and i have a lot to say about it and i
don't know how i'm going to try to do
this with
um so much of the other stuff but i'm
going to try at this point i believe
to go into this idea how and bringing
something into
the from let's say thought intangible
into the physical reality so i think
what i'm going
let me just keep with the rabbi's words
and then i'm going to diverge off into
some of the scientific
ideas so if you
speak it out you give yourself clarity
now if you have a haruta you have a
study partner
so then you have at least somebody else
who is hearing
as we spoke about in last week's uh
class
effective listening so you have someone
else who can hear what you're saying
and can counter you or or let's say
sharpen you
by saying is this what i heard you say
so let's just say you're by yourself you
don't have your study partner
just speaking it out if you hear what
you're saying
that's already like again talking about
concretizing
yeah make sure it's clear if you said
this in front of another human being
would they understand what you're saying
or are there still certain words you
need to insert into the sentence
to get the idea across or maybe using
too many words
to get the idea across so it will help
you clarify
remember we're talking about how to how
to reach wisdom so
this is one of the ideas
in perky avat it says it's in chapter 1
verse
chapter 1 mission 6. it says yeshua
and not bailey they received the wisdom
from
benelli um yoshi benuezer and yoshi
benjamin
now rob yeshua said like this make for
yourself a of
meaning acquire a teacher appoint
someone
as someone to be your teacher and then
he says acquire for you
for yourself a friend
what does it mean to acquire yourself a
friend
so there's many ways to think about it
and
look it's if you want him to be your
friend you have to be a giver
right if you're just a taker a lot of
people shy away
there are people that know okay so he's
in great need and i'll be there for him
but they may not look at themselves as a
friend but if you
give and give to that other person they
may feel indebted to you and they'll be
there for you
that's one way you know to always offer
them you know as a friend
maybe their birthday buy them flowers or
or whatnot but
if what if you don't have a friend
you're stuck on gilligan's island
i don't know whatever gillian's you're
you just don't have you don't have a
possibility
so i heard a very interesting idea and
it actually worked for me not that i
didn't have friends
but there were times that i was 11 30 at
night
all of my all by myself and i wanted to
speak things out
so yes it may look very weird you may
you know today i think that
whether it's called bluetooth and all
that stuff it's not as weird
but if you have a if you have a hard
time doing it
buy a pen so acquire yourself a friend
i've heard if you don't buy a pen right
a pen can be an expensive uh
it could be expensive i don't know how
much does it cost
you know two dollars a dollar or
whatever it is but buy yourself a friend
writing it out is the next best thing
okay so we're talking about
ranging your lips saying it out loud but
people know people write diaries it
definitely helps
clarify so that's not like that would be
like
fall back uh there's another word um i'm
looking for
right alternative lesser alternative
yeah basically alternative but i was
looking for another another word but
it's okay
uh maybe i'll i'll think about it as i
go on uh not a default but a
okay so let's go on so what does it help
to speak things out
first of all i want to mention
that when we
are taught in the torah itself it says
on the one of the most important days
right we have
the most important days i should say the
one of the most important days in jewish
calendar is the passover seder
and it's used for transmission
of the of the knowledge that we had
the revelation that we were slaves in
egypt and we ended up at the har sinai
50 days later that this is like it's
called
it's really truly the best way
to instill education into the next
generation
it's called a haggadah based on a verse
there's the verse
in exodus 13 8
if you want to say it over jesse
chapter 13.
verse 8 says and you shall tell your son
on that day saying because of this the
lord did this for me
when i went out of egypt so in hebrew
it's the hegarta
the the haggadah that means to tell over
to tell her well to tell over it's not
just
to um i don't know to create a movie and
let him sit him in the
cinema in the corner while you're eating
and he's watching the movie the ten
commandments right
it's to tell it over that's the mitzvah
to converse to have a conversation
to um not just clarify but as i
mentioned you're talking about the idea
of
um bringing uh bringing from the
potential to the actual
right we're actually supposed to um
relive it's not just a memorial day
like you would say about let's say
i i know not everyone here is from
america but i'm just using a day
like a columbus day or a washington's
birthday
or something that had to do with
something that took place
x amount of years ago and you're just
remembering
we're actually reliving it and yes
there's a lot of
theatrics and um what's the word
uh props that we use whether it's the
you know from the uh the matzes and the
more
but beyond that there are different
customs to carry loads on your back and
walk around the table like you were
slaves
there's so many right and we we dip our
finger in the wine to remember the
the blood and and all the different
plagues
there's so many things that are brought
into actuality through
the expressions not just words but i'm
going to speak
more about this that words actually
bring into reality
but now there's another verse and that's
in
deuteronomy chapter 6 verse 7.
deuteronomy chapter
verse 7 and you shall teach them to your
sons and speak of them
when you sit in your house and when you
walk on the way and when you lie down
and when you rise up
now this this verse happens to be
in part of the shema israel that we save
more than twice a day
we say this at least twice a day and
it is in a sense talking about you know
the exodus from egypt but on a bigger
because it's on a bigger
sense it's talking about what we do
every day right every single day
when you teach them to your son speak of
them when you sit in your house on a
daily basis
when you walk in the way as you go when
you lie down when you rise up
what does that do with speaking i mean
teaching
so we all know the word mishna right
mishna means teaching
even in the um the aramaic right in the
hebrew
tana and um for braisio
this is the same word over there it's
all about teaching teaching teaching
but the root seems to be even though it
could mean to review
should like to do a review a second time
shani
shinan but also what are teeth called
shame shame so this
look at rash irashi says you will teach
them the word
is an expression of sharpness sharp
because your teeth are sharp you bite
you chew
you um you break it down for the
digestion process
right your teeth hopefully you're sharp
and meaning that
these words should be sharply impressed
in your mouth so that if a person asks
you something
you shall not hesitate about it but you
will tell him immediately
it's a very very interesting idea here
okay so that is in terms of
learning um for the word or let's say
teeth teeth and learning are related
so we're asking what does it mean a
range on your lips
so i'm trying to explain through through
through the sources here
uh now in terms of reality bringing
things into reality
so the laboratory had said
that think good and it will be good
okay now did he mean just thoughts alone
i have a feeling he did but that was
just the beginning
right what you do with your speech
actually has
reality he says think good no be good
and we can see already even in science
today
that the thought alone can bring things
into reality
but more than that right if you speak it
out that even has a greater effect
here's a question that i asked i asked
my students
i'm going to ask you guys tonight maybe
i even asked you before
why does the the book the book the holy
book
the scripture why do we need to know
that god i'm gonna use the word blank
and the world came into being right you
god spoke it says over and over and over
again
god spoke well god doesn't have lips
god doesn't have vocal cords as far as i
know cheeks
right he doesn't have any of these
physical attributes
yet we use the word that he spoke so it
must be teaching us this is the way the
torah works it's it's written in the
language of
man and god created
let's call reality let's call this world
is an aspect of reality he created it
with speech it teaches us something very
powerful that speech
actually creates reality i'll give you i
think
i'm sure i've told you these this before
but even the words
that magicians have adopted and i'm
talking about magicians you know the
guys on the show
yeah they say abracadabra
what in the world does that mean like
hocus pocus
you can say anything you want talk in
tongues right whatever
and all of a sudden pow right it's a
joke but it doesn't matter that's what
they say
so what does it mean so in aramaic by
the way and same with hebrew
it's like the word bara means to create
if you put an aleph before that means i
create so abba
i create
as i speak i create as i speak so even
to the
you know the secular world whatever the
the commercial world that they use these
uh these uh statements there's there's
something about it
that i want to bring down to reality
here
there's a famous statement the jews read
it every day
the incense offering and part of the
process
of making the incense offering when the
person while the person
is grinding the incense
there is somebody who's standing over
him
saying certain words okay now those
words
are let me just see what i have in here
um sorry just one second
uh these are famous words of course um
and for some reason i can't find them
here but i have them
so it's brought down in a um
i think it's a bracer it says
tanya reby nos and i make a shoe
showcase
while he is pounding the incense
the guy says
and why what does that mean
finely grind grind finally
finally grind fin grind finally he says
it back and
keeps saying it over and over and over
again and what does the
right to say
labzamine because the voice the word
call has to do with the word voice
because the voice is good for the
for the incense this is something that i
pondered for a long time i was always
under the impression
that basically the finer you grind it
the better it is
but that's not what it says it says that
the voice is good for the
um for the incense okay
so i still thought maybe this guy's like
a personal trainer
right the finer you grind it the better
it is so if you have someone over your
shoulder
coaching you on maybe even like in a
sing-song way
or in a um maybe demanding way
or whatever it is maybe just suggestive
that you'll do a better job and i always
thought that until i came across the
gemara in shabbos
that discussed it's called the inbol
interesting word
what would you think the in baal is the
in baal is the little thing that hangs
inside the bell it's the inner part of
the bell
in bow and um it was discussing whether
or not
the bell the the the
the cover of the bell without the
inbound was
called mooks on shabbos or not meaning
it had any use
on shabbat and i came across a piece
that i never realized
that this a bell was also striking in
the background
while this person was saying to
finally grind grind finally and it was
like whoa
so not only do you have the voice but
you also have the bell but the mishnah
tells us the bracelet tells us that it's
the voice that makes the difference
so i'm still wondering to myself what is
all this about
and then i had a friend who
unfortunately
had what they call um
kidney stones and
um they used
ultrasound sound yeah break apart
now i didn't know exactly how it was
done until he described it to me
now imagine that the kidney stone is
painful enough
so they put you in this tub of water i
mean i'm describing the way he described
it
and then there's this machine that's
going to make this
sound go through the water and then
the sound absorbed into the body
and it breaks apart the kidney stone
and i don't know why i put my i had a
sheet on it
but um i don't know i'll probably come
across it later
it was effective put it that way
whatever it was it was
effective and i thought to myself well
so one second so
sound can create or break
things right and then it's just sound
that's all it is i mean look we even
have airplanes flying overhead
and they break the sound barrier and
then you can have broken windows
i mean it's possible right it happens
you ever see those um
i remember was a cassette um commercial
i don't know if anybody knows what a
cassette is
but it's a it's a magnetic
i think that they would be back and so
somebody would um what's the word
a woman i think it's always a woman i
guess uh fitzgerald
something like that yeah she would sing
it i guess a very high pitch that's what
it's called
and it could shatter glass and so
and they would record back and show you
that even the recording was so good it
was like live right it was such a good
recording i guess that was
the selling point on that so even like
just
since we've all we've all seen it we
know that sound could affect reality
it's just sound
that's all it is and yet it's invisible
um
it's very hard to pick up the waves uh
physically but if you have machines
today you could pick it up
i have another friend who's a scientist
and he explained to me that when they
do they use extremely
sensitive metal
instruments they use a here
electro it's called ultrasonic cleaning
i don't know if you can see it such a
thing exists it's basically
ultrasound and it works in a very
i mean it's very complicated i can
review a little bit basically what it
does
it um ultrasonic cleaners are used to
clean many different types of objects
including jewelry
scientific samples lenses and other
optical parts
watches dental and surgical instruments
tools coins
and all kinds of stuff um and
it works it works it's a real thing it's
the real deal
okay so that's very very interesting
um they even did experiments
on let's say you have a very thin sheet
of metal and they put sand
on the metal or it could be scrapings
yeah
and they would either play violins or or
drums in the room
and it would affect it's very very easy
to imagine this
the sound waves affect this thin piece
of metal
it's vibrating whether you can see it or
not but all of a sudden what you looked
at before
with just a thinned out layer of sand
now there's a pattern that has emerged
they did this also
with um okay so if you have different
types of instruments or different types
of let's say
from pop or hard rock to classical music
it can develop a different type of
pattern which is seems obvious
um they can freeze water obviously water
can be frozen but they did it in a
in a lab um and they were either playing
different types of instruments whether
it was
uh hard rock or classical
and the way the formation of the ice
would freeze would depend on the
the ways of sound that were traveling
through
um the airspace and it created different
types of designs
okay these are all obvious right so what
i'm trying to say
is that if god if god whatever that
means how god spoke
when he spoke that he created reality
and however well that it can it can
affect reality
right he created something he created
the moon called something from nothing
meaning he created a physical world out
of pure energy
and we discussed these ideas before
um
so when we pray when we learn
if we let's talk about prayer prayer is
also easier to understand than learning
if okay so what we're doing when we're
moving our lips
and we're praying right we're creating
these waves and they're going somewhere
right we say does god hear us he doesn't
have ear he doesn't have the inner ear
that we have yet we assume and we
rightfully claim that of course he hears
us
whether he says yes or no that's an
irrelevant whether he answers us with a
yes or no that's irrelevant
that the fact that he hears us right
even in this week's parsha
and in um in saddam
right there was a cry there was an
outcry from sadon
that hashem obviously heard and he
responded
so this was the oppressed the the rules
there were
they had rules they were full of rules
but they were immortal
they were immortal and so anyway he
heard
the oppression he heard the screams of
those who were pressed and of course
we know that he heard our pr our our
screams and our oppression while we were
in um in egypt so we know he hears
questions he doesn't have an earlobe
right he doesn't have the inner workings
of the ear so let's say
this is what i've been told i i don't
know but i know they have
radio telescopes in space
and whether or not and how whatever they
can pick up
from how many millions of light years
away is irrelevant for this point
the point is that they turn it around
towards earth they can actually pick up
certain sound waves and radio waves that
had emitted from earth
however many years ago i don't know
let's say for example when babe ruth hit
his
you know famous home run so there was a
everyone how many people were listening
on the radio at that time so
it it's still alive in other words what
we say
does not it may dissipate but it's still
there in other words as it goes out to
space it could
be the signal may get weaker and weaker
i have no idea
but it's still there on some level so if
we think about that so that's for prayer
now what about just using our lips
to speak words of torah i'll tell you
there's a famous ghazal to tell us that
if you
repeat a piece of torah in the name of a
certain rabbi who's already passed on
his lips are moving in the grave now
what does that mean does that mean
literally physically his lips are moving
in the grave i don't know
i have to look into it but
the words that he spoke then let's say
you know if he's dead now whatever it
was
when he lived those those words
are re-emanating so to speak into the
world
i don't know if it's from his lips so to
speak but it was originally on his lips
and therefore you're giving life to that
phrase that he uttered
this is how maybe a simplistic way i'm
sure it's deeper than that but
it works for me you know what i'm saying
okay there's so much to talk about here
on the night of pesach i mentioned that
we're going to tell over the haggadah so
we call the
we call the mats it's called oni
what does it mean it means
the poor man's bread because by the time
you finish buying it
now you're poor now that's a joke it is
expensive i have to admit
it's probably like 100 times the price
of bread
and uh but the point is this there is no
added there's no sugar there's no salt
there's nothing added
and that's one of the reasons called
poor man spread but the gemara also
explains because of the word
onu the way it's spelled
that's the same word as answer because
it's something that is a
a prop that you answer many things about
so again it's it's um
it's alluding to the idea of moving your
lips because
answering or speaking of it's mean
basically you're speaking about it you
know hopefully questions will be asked
and we all know that if no questions are
asked you have to ask the question
and not only do you have to ask the
question says even in the most wise
you know you have a whole table full of
learned rabbis
they're obligated they're obligated to
speak it out why is speaking it out
so important it's mind-boggling
okay i just want to mention right now
before we go further
that the other the other the other way
is also bad in other words
speaking torah is good speaking nonsense
and speaking let's say
you know negative things can have a
detrimental effect
so we're going to get to it at the end
of
uh what the rabbis spoke about but it's
so important like i said if
right when of um the red the rebbe of la
bavish says
think good and it will be good so you
can just imagine the opposite i don't
want to say it
but you can imagine what it could be if
the opposite was true
so one should be very careful not only
what they think
because that also has an effect but like
i said sometimes you think
think things but don't say it right try
to
uh to work it out it doesn't actually
come to being
come into being okay this another idea
is basically and i think i touched on
about one i touched on it a bit
and that's what happens is the external
actions themselves
then become internal so what's internal
it's like basically each one keeps
strengthening itself
so what you think about and then you do
and then
if you do it and if it was a negative
thing it's going to have
um internal um implications
so careful um
he uses the idea of uh making
resolutions
right so i know that in the non-jewish
world
comes january 1st there's a time that
people make
resolutions truth is you can make
resolutions anytime
right so the question is are you going
to say something you're going to fulfill
you're going to really try to fulfill
or or not by the way when it comes to
making oaths in judaism
it's all about being very careful about
what you say we actually try our best to
say bleed made there
there's a whole reason why it's best not
to take oats
um but if you did take an oath so you
really better make sure
that what you're saying you're not
fooling yourself because some people
you know they say things and they're not
really
you know serious about it so
this could hopefully if you're doing it
right
and you really want to let's say lose
weight or you want to stop smoking
you want to uh i don't know whatever it
is that you're making a resolution about
that um well when as soon as you utter
it
you'll hopefully come to some type of
clarity whether that was real or not
here he speaks he speaks about
and try to give yourself a daily pep
talk
now one of the things in other words
because what you say affects
affects who you are detects what you're
going to be
so like before i get up in the morning
as i wake up and we say
all right there's a whole jewish thing
to say before your
jewish thing jewish wisdom
that we're so grateful to hashem
god for returning our souls right and
giving us
giving us another chance to say with joy
to just be so grateful have an attitude
of gratitude the first thing
that you're alive so
think i notice this huge difference
between whether i only think it
or whether i think it and say it you're
it's a huge difference
it's just i would say lighten night and
day
to right if you actually say i am so
grateful for hashem giving back my soul
and he fainted me that's what what
better what words to utter how
how how's your how your day will be is
uh like i said night and day it's
unbelievable
so he just says try giving yourself a
daily pep talk
tell yourself today is a great day full
of possibilities life is beautiful and
i'm fortunate to be alive
i'm going to be full of joy and apply
all the wisdom i know
today i will achieve my goals say it
until you mean it
he says before you go to sleep say
tomorrow i'm gonna jump out of bed with
energy and joy
i'm not gonna or or i'm not gonna get
angry say it out loud
you know there's an idea fake it till
you make it right
like that could be also rabbi um
zelig pliskin who was taught today torah
for like
like 100 years you know he was there
from the beginning
and he's still there to this day
unbelievable so he talked about a
concept called
reframing reframing means when you
notice you're going
i don't know let's say outside the box
you're no longer in a
state of joy so it's it has a lot to do
with good what's going on in here
and a lot of times you must verbalize it
make it real bring it into reality
it's going to make a huge difference
another idea
is besides the idea of
saying things out loud but think to say
it in a sing-song voice
right now learning that's easy
especially if you're around all these
people are doing the same thing
but try to imagine try to imagine right
it becomes more real and everyone has
their own
inner tune and you'll find yours right
if you try
to maybe through meditation but if you
if you realize that
i think i spoke about this before in
terms of memorizing things
it's so interesting the gomorrah right
the talmud
is not just about law and it's sometimes
stories
but it's actually this rap i said that
it gives
a it's like this rabbi was going on the
way and he ran into another rabbi or
there in a certain city
and he he said this how much easier is
that to remember
because it was this rabbi with that
rabbi in a certain place
where a certain thing was happening you
know i advanced these people
under people who could remember 30
people they have guests at their table
and it's not just in the jewish world
it's i think it's anywhere if we
ask these people how do you have such
memory that you can recall
things you only heard for one second in
a in a series
and go back and repeat it the person
will tell you
that they made it a song they they made
it a song they made it a story
either one or the other and so the same
thing with the talmud
the talmud is written in such a way that
it's also it's like a story or a song
and this will help you remember so
again a story or a a story or a song
as we spoke about before in last week's
um class about being a song the torah is
like a song
um but even the word lisa perlis up here
means to tell over it's another word
and the word sapphire stone is actually
from the same word
and so what is a sapphire it's a very
bright
it's illuminated right if you want to
get
lit up make make it a story
right and we're talking about
mantras right like make us make it a
mantra make it a saying
and that leads me to the next idea and
that is um
about semanim why didn't bring it with
me but there's arya kaplan hamish
i was at a friend's house last week and
he asked me if i could help him
memorize the parsha like the concepts
he was so interested because he wasn't
he didn't grow up with torah
and he feels he's got a lot of catch up
to do so the arcade kaplan homicide
actually every time there's a new
paragraph and i don't mean in english
according to the original hebrew
paragraphs
where there is what is called estima in
other words
wherever there is either a hitting the
enter
enter button or you hit the tab button
where you have
space between words he developed a new
paragraph and he himself gives you a
theme
this was big initiator there were
several rabbis that were encouraging
and teaching how to learn simon
means mnemonic devices and ways to
remember
and so much of the
law books the shogun are for example
they're all listed by numbers
how do you ever remember all these
numbers but guess what it's important
it's important to remember the headings
the headings because once you
let's say you learned the like all of
partials
uh noah or parson's laplace or whatever
it is but you go through the aria
capital and you see he actually
summarizes what the paragraph's about so
if you ever
see that heading could be two words
there are three words you remember all
the different five or six subjects
subcategories within that paragraph same
two with the shakunaro
when you know this is dealing with it
has like 36 or
even 50 subcategories but at least you
know the heading
and you know where to look i was told
you know as i was becoming a rabbi
that today it's very different the
rabbis back then
i mean even today there's quite a few
that have photographic memory
but for us want to be rabbis for us
young
you know hot coals of the rabbis we were
trying to learn
they told us that to be a rabbi today
you don't have to know everything you
have to know where to find the answer
if you know where so when the question
comes to you you have to know to say i
don't know but i'll get back to you i'll
look it up
and you have to know where to look if
you know where to look
that's that's the beginning of wisdom
really also you know the humility of
saying i'll get back to you
i don't know
[Music]
okay so basically i covered those ideas
but i wanted to go through
some some interesting parts of the
gemara
and now the question is where to begin
um it's a lot but i'll start in aravind
53a and then 53b
and then 54a and then 54b there's like
little pieces that i thought were
interesting
and i'm going to skip around a little
bit just to get the point across
and so the more continues with the
discussion relating to study and
comprehension
in other words it's about wisdom it's
not just study
right to remember it but to actually
comprehend
and hopefully you know really ingest
the the delicious wisdom that's being
offered
so there's a difference between the
people in yehuda and the people
in the galil rabuda said to rav
i'm sorry review the said that rav said
with regard to the people in yehuda
who were particular with their speech
and are always certain that it was both
precise and refined
interesting because we talk about the
grinding up the incense it's the same
almost the same language right that
their speech was
precise and refined and guess what their
torah
knowledge endured isn't that beautiful
whereas the people in the galilee who
were not particular with their speech
their torah did not endure
um it goes through a lot of examples of
language that i want to skip
a lot how these people in yehuda judea
were more precise
and the people in the galilee were less
precise okay
so many examples
it happens to the brewery of ruria was
rabbi
mayer's wife she came across a certain
student
who was whispering his studies what do
we think about whispering studies
that's not a good thing he should raise
his voice
it says she kicked him and then said
isn't it written as follows so in second
samuel
23 5 order in all things
and be secure okay which indicates
that if the torah is ordered meaning
arranged
in your 248 limbs that's what we have
if you exert your entire body in
studying it it will be secure
and if not it will not be secure the
gamora relates
that it was taught in a bryce said that
rev eliezer had a student
who also whispered his studies after
three years he forgot his studies
so before going the idea here is that
you're using your whole body
in other words in your mouth alone
there are five i shouldn't say five
and i don't want to limit it but there
are we know that there are five aspects
of
of speech whether it's the guttural it's
the palette
it's the teeth it's the cheeks the lips
there's different aspects but
you're using you're using we say we want
to serve hashem with all our limbs
so serving hashem talking out your
learning
remember the original not question but
the original idea is
how to retain knowledge or how to get
knowledge how to acquire knowledge
so using your body you know you see
um at least jews in prayer they're
rocking back and forth
but also in learning in learning the
same things to stand up and rock back
and forth use your thumbs
i'm sure you've seen that right using
the thumbs
i mean today people use their thumbs to
text
but use your thumb for the for for
something positive
and okay
more cites instructions issued by shmuel
that were very similar to what breweria
rivie mayor's wife
instructed schmol said to review
king scholar meaning
open your mouth and read from the torah
open your mouth and study the talmud
in order that your study should endure
in you and you should live a long life
because it says in proverbs 4 22. this
i'm very glad i got to this because i
want to spend a little bit time on this
read proverbs michele
says um for they are life for those who
find them and
for all his flesh a healing
okay now they are for life how does the
hebrew
i don't have in front of me um
one second i do here it is
it says
it is life like everyone wants life
it's life to those who find them now
look at the word mozart yeah
yeah ham the rabbi say remember
you don't have vowels in the torah right
even in the tanakh
but that word can be read le
mode say ahem
to those that make them go out of their
mouth
in other words i'll read it like this
don't read
to those who find them but rather to
those who express
them the word is called an expression
with their mouth
so you want life this is where it's
going to come from
god breathed into you life what are you
using it for what are you using the
breath that god gave you for other than
to return to him while you're alive with
the very words that he spoke these are
the words of torah
so you understand this is what
rav yehuda said shmuel said
in respect to i guess either backing up
breweria agreeing with breweria but the
same lesson
this is about what are we talking about
here
right a rehearsal time arranging them on
your lips
this is the the a way to
acquire wisdom this is more than that
wisdom is life itself
right so acquiring life
to express the torah that you learn
and now having expounded the verse for
their life to those who
find them as referring to the torah the
gemura cites another
teaching related to a verse that praises
the torah
yeshua the lady said one who's walking
on the way without a companion
and he's afraid he should engage in
torah study
as it says and this is in proverbs
1 9.
9 says for they are a wreath of grace
for your head
and a necklace for your neck okay so the
more goes out of its way to explain how
this is all going to
work protection okay
now how was i know that last week i
spoke about
the idea that
one should learn 101 times
yeah i get it that's a big that's a big
mountain to climb
we spoke about one opinion was 40 times
we went i suggest you look back because
it was very good sources
and um and they relate
a lot of the 101 times relate to the
gamaches
the idea 40 times relate to moshe rabenu
receiving the torah
40 days and 24 times
as related to 24 books in the torah but
here there's an idea of
minimally minimally four
and where do we get this from so this
you can find
on a 54b of aravind
the gemura continues to discuss methods
of torah study
the sages taught in the following bright
side
what was the order of teaching the oral
law how was the oral law first taught
so moses learned directly from hashem
from the mouth of the almighty
that's how moshe learned privately with
the greatest teacher on the world
our own entered and sat next to him i'm
sorry he sat in front of him
moses then taught him so moses basically
is reviewing it once but he learned it
once and reviewed it once
then aaron moved and sat to the left of
moses
meaning moses was on his right our own
sons entered
he taught them the lesson then our own
sons moved
aside eliezer then sat to the right of
moses
your teacher should be always on your
right but once you have
lesser students on the right you go to
the right of
you follow what i'm saying okay so let
me go back eliezer then sat to the right
of moses and into america on the left of
our road
so how many times do you have it review
to disagree with the first ton regarding
the sitting arrangements
and that's going to be irrelevant but
all together
you had four times so what do we have we
moses heard it once from god he told it
over to aaron
he told it over to aaron's sons and then
sorry then the elders came in and the
elders entered and moses taught them
so he ended up teaching one second
let me go i'm sorry let's go back it's
better to get it right the first time
okay aaron entered after he learned it
once
and he taught aaron then arun moved
aside
and aram's sons came in
that's the third time and then the
elders came in
fine there you have it four times
one second no not because the first time
he only heard it from god
so the fourth time he told it over was
to the entire nation there you have it
so that's how it goes so the one time
got moses heard it from god himself
but he taught it four times it's
important to teach it over four times
really teaching and learning is based
the same idea but do you see the
difference between the first time you
heard it
and the four times you consecutively
give it over it's important to give it
over a minimum of four times and let me
just
uh read this last point here moses then
departed from his tent
aaron taught the others his lesson on
and on and on
the bottom line is that everyone heard
the lessons taught by god four times in
the end
okay there's just way too much
but there's some other things here
oh the word the word for covenant
is the same word for the word word in
other words
a a dictionary is called a melon because
a word is called a mila the circumcision
is called
mila you follow
so when we talk about huh
let's see so we're talking here let me
just mention
here also this is
some crazy stuff okay i think i should
go through it
i just have a certain amount of
paragraphs that i
when when someone experiences
despair right and
he you know he he's like he has no hope
so it's like he can't even open his
mouth not to prayer
not to pray if you don't open your mouth
it's like the word dumb d-u-m-b
but damn the word for blood
is also like being numb being not be
dumb not being able to speak in other
words in hebrew
dom is blood but it also means
unable to speak we do know that one
on on account of four things israel was
redeemed from egypt
they didn't change their names but they
didn't change their language either
it had to be both believe it or not they
didn't speak splat
spent slander
so this also has to do with speech in
other words our redemption
personal redemption national redemption
depends on
our ability to to use our speech
correctly
the reason i mentioned about the word
dumb blood
and the idea of mila you know when you
when someone gets a circumcision it's
it's that's minimal or a lot of blood
but blood is
to be released it's part of the process
and the word
mila in other words the what comes out
what what is the result of the
drawing of the blood the removal it's
called a removal of the
numbness of the dumbness d-u-m-b
the removal of that you're left with the
word
it's so very i'm trying to get across
the idea of how
important it is to um speak it out
speak out the torah touring things that
we know
awesome
um okay the word pessac right we
mentioned in the beginning that the the
the the holiday called pesach
is a nominal point in the calendar
for expressing education to the next
generation
what does pesach means literally to jump
over
but it's not so simple because god
didn't skip here or there
but the word can be divided into like
two words
the pet is the mouth
speaks the mouth speaks
that is the whole idea of education of
not just acquiring wisdom
but giving it all but it says in our
talmud that if you
give over to your own children and your
grandchildren it's a mind-boggling thing
what i'm about to tell you
drum roll please fireworks
it's as if you receive the revelation
directly from mount sinai
so now i understand if i open my mouth
this is a way to acquire wisdom the
theme we've been speaking about all
night is giving it over
clarifying it it's not just for yourself
but it's for the next generation
but as a siata de shmaya as assistant
god's giving you heavily assistance
in getting it right because as you try
and attempt to give it over to your
grandchildren
that's when the phrase is actually used
it's as if
you are receiving it in direct so when i
first heard that i said okay
it's like oh you just tell me how the
chain works if you give it over to your
grandson and since
he's receiving it from mount sinai
that's not how to read it
you the teacher you're the father you're
the grandfather
you're receiving it because you're in
the process you're in the chain
and you're giving it over hashem is
helping to make it go
straight that the transmission should
continue and therefore he's giving you
heavenly assistance in in providing you
with clarity
hashem preserving it
um okay there's some really good stuff
here
i'm going to skip all this
[Applause]
now i just had this little idea about
shockwave
this is what we talked about already
okay
there is a mishna in menakos 87a
there are challenges this is disgusting
discussing this idea
about speech is beneficial to the spices
as we mentioned
but it also says that speech is
detrimental to wine
now i looked i tried to look this up you
know the internet should have results
there was nothing definitive in fact a
lot of research seemed to
have been done we understand that speech
may be beneficial to the spices as we
spoke about
but the mission the same mission says
that it's not good
for wine so there are
people that make made an investment
there's a whole new
um idea of trying to
create a better wine through playing uh
what's the word
classical music there's nothing
definitive and it doesn't look like
it would be a good investment but
i wanted to read something from it's an
abstract
from food science and nutrition magazine
several recent studies have demonstrated
that music can significantly influence
the
eating or drinking experience but i'm
not talking about
the actual making of the wine itself is
what i'm interested in
it's not clear however whether this
influence would be moderated
by the expertise of the taster it goes
on and on and on and says
it's it's not nothing is really clear
however national geographic
magazine says a few wine companies are
playing music to their aging barrels
not just playing music while drinking
the wine i mean actually playing music
for settling liquid as it slowly
ferments
again there's no um there's no proof
that anything is
really working there
so i'm not sure in what way i mean i'm
not sure
however because i was so puzzled how can
it be that the mishnah says
it and yet there's no scientific proof
i came across a ben yehoda on this
particular
item and he says like this i'm going to
try to read it slowly
just as speak speech is good for the
is good for the spices so too
speech is not good for wine what is what
does that mean
so the ben yada explains this is from
the bani shai
that the reason that speech activates
wine
somehow it's it affects the wine as we
said not in a good way
so he's giving a metaphysical reason
in order that a person should take
ethical
teachings le in a diva regarding speech
just so we should know regarding speech
something ethical and this is what he
mentioned is written in the
the book of the hida in the name of
the ana muhammad anak
in precious matters he says i heard like
this
that it shouldn't really bother a person
how
speech in this world which is very low
but it makes such a great effect in the
upper worlds
okay we're it's like summarizing
everything we spoke about
so below
yai and shubham martev is it not
the wine while it's i guess aging or
fermenting
it's in the basement which is very low
right usually some basements are low i
mean cool
and it's placed in a hadith it's placed
in a
corked barrel you know a sealed barrel
at the time that you're
shredding on other grapes and even
though
the barrels down in the basement are
going to be very far
distance from where you're treading the
grapes
you're causing the barrels to vibrate
and this is a wonder this is somehow
wonder
from this you should take proof that
speech
has an effect above
that's all he says now he tries to sum
it up like saying like this
therefore what did god do he made the
nature of wine
effective by speech
in order that a person should feel that
he should learn
the effects of speech from the way that
the nature of wine how that works
however the activating
um the how does he say
happy
when god forbid when someone is drunk
okay when i want to tell you if you've
ever been to a really holy
porn party right where it's probably the
only
well i shouldn't say the only i've seen
many
every seder that i have when we drink
four cups of wine
everyone is so drunk like from just four
cups
i shouldn't say drunk everyone's happy
there's no fighting there's no
cursing everyone is like spiritually
elevated
it's like the highest moment of the year
right as
it's like coming off of yom kippur it's
such a high
so too when you're in a holy rabbi's
home
hopefully at purim time you see enemies
come together and they start kissing
each other i don't mean in a negative i
mean they're kissing they're they're
hugging each other
and each one is crying how sorry they
are for what anything they might have
done to the other person
it's like the most beautiful thing so
what happens when people get drunk
sometimes it doesn't turn out like that
but hopefully what i just described to
you
is what should happen when people drink
you know a little bit more than they
normally drink i mean again
i don't drink it all except once in a
blue moon like when it's a mitzvah
so here he's talking about when people
get drunk
um with wine so they
it's for the bad and not for the good
which hints to this idea
that if someone should get drunk with
wine it's going to be bad for him
what part the speech
usually i'm not going to say goes first
but it's one of the main parts
that we desecrate that i mean i've seen
people drunk
and they say things that you would not
expect oh these are these are like
decent human beings and all of a sudden
they get drunk and they start using
words that you just
you you're embarrassed for yourself you
cannot imagine that they're using these
words
meaning they come out of the person's
mouth these it's
it's not for good okay so that i want to
end there because he
discusses the idea of oil in a way if
you're if you do get drunk
and you don't want to you want to have a
remedy i wouldn't call it a hangover
fixer-upper but he talks about shaman
and what you should do with the oil
and how that can help you and not speak
bad speech but anyway i thought that was
a little bit comforting
because we didn't find anything in um
in science that says that noise during
the production
of wine is detrimental but the the ben
yoda does explain
that there's a moosa hot skill there's a
muslim lesson
that we should walk away with that and
you know that it's true
nobody can deny it when people drink a
little bit too much sometimes they get a
bit a little bit uh
out of hand loose lips
and it does relate to the idea it says
when wine goes in
the same the gematria for yayan which is
70 is the same letters
same gemachia is sowed it says when wine
goes in the secrets come out
and that's the beauty of people who are
really working on their character
is if they do drink a little bit too
much then all of a sudden
they're confessing their sins to their
friend and they're apologizing and
they're on such a high
holy level whereas um god forbid if
someone is not working on their cells
then the opposite comes out okay so
we're going to end there we talked about
arranging
arrangement of the lips and i think we
spoke about it
uh pretty good you know uh atlanta yeah
yeah beautiful rabbi you know just
so much to absorb i think uh we've had a
good crowd tonight it's
uh yeah profound stuff i'm really
enjoying this class uh

as we go forward and
um i really appreciate you taking the
time to share with us it's wonderful
great so i just want to mention what the
topic for next week will be
and i'll have my sheet in front of me
i'll tell you
okay it is drum roll please
be naughty be naughty which means
understanding the heart
and the following one i think we're
going to put together
no i will see emma number five is aim
which
means the power of all so we'll uh we'll
see how
my uh my preparation goes
i would like to try at some point to put
together
a few of these again if it if i start
going deeper and i see there's
quite a lot to say i'll get stuck on
just one
but well i think you you broke it down
tonight for us very
very easily i see you you jumped a
couple of things because
i think you realized if you went down
that vein you were gonna
yeah keep going and um you got me
wondering like i feel like a fish with a
hook in my mouth i want to hear the rest
i want to hear the little bits but
maybe today's not the day but uh i want
to thank you for today's class so
uh hashem willing are we okay for the
same time next week

angle beyond the seven and i hope that
uh no hides out there red just grab on
