The Special Sunglasses | Rabbi Eytan Feiner

There’s a wonderful Yid in our Shul, in our community. His name is R' Eli Cheshin. And he grew up as the grandson of the illustrious, the renowned, the Heiliger R’ Binyamin Zev, known as R' Eli Cheshin .זכר צדיק וקדוש לברכה And he was known as an unbelievable צדיק, and of course very Makpid when it came to Dikduk Hamitzvos, you name it. And when it came to Shemiras Einayim, even his own family was not aware, until one day, בסוף ימיו, he was staying by a daughter in Shaarei Chessed, and his son came along one morning to pick him up, to take him for a doctor visit, and he wasn’t wearing his glasses at the time, and the son says, “Okay, Tatty, we’re going out to see the doctor.” And the father says, “No problem, I just want to get my glasses.” And before he had a chance to get his own glasses, the son picks them up and he says, ”No, Tatty, these are sunglasses. I was just outside, it’s really not sunny today. You don’t need your sunglasses.” He says, “No but it’s daylight, and the daylight, the rays sometimes, it causes me a little bit of harm, you know what, I still want to wear my sunglasses.” So he says, “No problem Tatty, you could wear your sunglasses, just give me a minute, let me clean them off for you.” And his son takes his father’s special sunglasses into his arms, and he picks them up and he’s about to clean them for his father. And he holds them up to his eyes, as many who don glasses daily know that he was just looking to see how clean they were. And as he took a quick glance, he noticed, he could כמעט see absolutely nothing from the glasses. He barely saw a few feet in front of him. He said, “Tatty, Tatty, you really can’t see anything through these glasses, and the father just said, “Don’t worry my son, please let me have my glasses.” And only then did the son Chap, that every day his father wore his special sunglasses in the street. They might have looked like ordinary sunglasses, and they were anything but, because the son finally Chapped, now, I see how holy my pious father really is. He would walk in the streets, even if it wouldn't be all that sunny out, but he put on his special pair of sunglasses. Why? Because the same way his father was ever devout and pious when it came to Shemiras Hamitzvos, at the top of the list, was his Dikduk in Kedushas Einayim, in Shemiras Einayim, his special pair of sunglasses to make sure that he would only see what he needed to see, and he wouldn’t see that which was forbidden. Let’s follow that lesson. Let’s follow in the path of the Heiliger R’ Cheshin, and let’s go ahead and make sure to see only that which we really need to see.
