Vayechi - 3rd Portion

Join me in learning together for Tuesday parasi chapter 48 verse1 17. Yesterday we learned as Yseph brought his children to be blessed by Yakov. And Yakov switched his hands. He put the right hand on the younger child Ephraim and the left hand on the older child Minasha. Verse 17. Yseph saw that his father placed his right hand on the head of aim and he was displeased by it. And so he lifted his father's hand in order to remove it from the head of the head of verse 17. He tried lifting it from the head of his son which of of be able to support it that it should go on the head of verse 18 Yseph tells his father tells his father not so my father this one is the elder Put his hand, put your right hand on his head. Verse 18. Verse 19. And his father refused. He said, "I know, my son. I know. He too will be a great nation. He will also rise to greatness." However, and his younger brother will be greater than him and his descendants will fill the nation, the world's nations. What does this mean? As Rashi explains, what is Jacob referring to? And what is this reference to? Verse 19. I know that I know that Manasha is the older one. Yes, Manasha will be great because later on in time, how is he going to be great? Minasha is going to have from his descendants. What is this? Continuing on Yeshua that who's going to come of meaning all of the world will be known and be publicized of his greatness when people will hear about I'm sorry who comes from Ephraim when it will come the time that Ephraim will then make the sun stand still in Gon and when he will be fighting against the five kings of the Amorites, which then he will also have the the world will see how the sun continue to uh stand still as the Jewish people shall be able to wage war against their enemies and they'll know that it was because of Yeshua was a descendant of Ephraim. Verse 20 and he blessed them on that day saying with you the Jewish people may be blessed. [snorts] Lamer saying God make you like mentioning before. What does it mean? With you, the Jewish people will be blessed. Meaning that when people come to bless their children as Rashi explains when somebody blesses his children will bless them with your blessings saying you should be as great as a man will tell his son may you be blessed to be like the children of Aryan meaning by the fact that in his blessing he put he put the before mana like so too And it was going to be that they will travel and the flags are going to go first. It's going to be first the flag of Ephraim and upon it will be Manasha as well. So too when the the leaders of the tribes came to dedicate the tabernacle as well Ephraim came before Manasha and Jacob now tells about God will be with you and it will return you to the land of your forefathers. Verse 22. And I thereby I award you and I am giving to you. I'm giving you the city of which is going to be an inheritance one portion beyond the rest of your brothers that I have taken from the hands of the Amorites with my sword and my bow. Rashi verse 22. Now this verse is going back to the fact that he asked Yoseph to take him and bury him in the land of the patriarchs and to the cave of the patriarchs. He says as follows because you are going to be bothered to take care of my burial I have given you an extra portion in the land of Israel cover that you will be able to be buried in it. Which is it? This is as it says that the bones of Yseph that the Jewish people took with them out of Egypt, they buried in. And this was the extra portion that was given to Yoseph from his father. Meaning I'm going to give you that I am going to give you that as a portion. This is going to be one extra portion besides the normal inheritance that every single tribe is going to get in the land of Israel. You will be receiving the city of Shem as an extra portion where you will be buried as well. Yakov says he took it with his bow and his sword. When did Yakov even wage war against the Amorites? What does it mean with his bow and his sword? So Rashi explains when Shim and Ley killed the people of Niskansavik. So all of the Amorites and the neighboring nations came and wanted to wage war against Yakov and Yakov got ready and waged war against them and was victorious against them to be able to fend off the enemy that tried to come attacked the Jewish people after they battled in another explanation to what this verse means. For example, it says when you will take which means you will put it into portions. I will split it into portions. Then as we know that he will come to serve one God. All of them will put their portions aside and come to recognize Hashem as one entity. So we see over here what he means that he's going to give Yseph an extra portion. meaning that his two children will be like the tribes that they're going to have an extra portion an extra tribe from the tribe of Joseph that I took from the Amorites from that as behaved like an Amorite meaning like evil people another explanation what does it mean that Yakov took it from the Amorites that he would trap meaning he tricked his father with the words that he's saying that why was Asov considered an Amorite? Because he would say falso to his father trying to convince his father that he's actually a righteous and great person by saying things and as we discussed in the previous Torah readings what does it mean with his bow and his sword? So one explanation is that is his wisdom and another explanation. The word bakashi means both but can also come from the word my prayers my asking of God that they should be successful in their uh in their battle against the people of we see over here a unique thing where Yseph was concerned about the fact that Jacob was giving preference over Ephraim over why was Yseph so concerned about it because as we see Yseph already learned from history and he saw on the past that when one brother was showed favoritism over another, it didn't end well as well as when one brother decided to be the older one over the younger one where Yakov himself didn't end well as well. And that was his concern. However, Yoseph did not realize that Aphraim and Manasha were unique and great that not only did they not mind that Manasha not mind that Ephraim got the blessing, but he was supportive and the word supportive to Ephraim that he was able to get these blessings from his grandfather. And we see as over time this animosity of the brothers changed to the extent that we come into the uh book of Exodus where Mosh Aron Aron supports the fact that his younger brother Moshe becomes the leader of the Jewish people.
