Time is not your enemy, it is your ally
28 views
Time is not your enemy, it is your ally. We almost never need to react immediately. Giving yourself a few minutes, hours, or even days to think before responding can make all the difference. Telling a child this needs to be addressed but I want to think about the next step, I love you no matter what, can be incredibly powerful. Using time wisely helps us respond thoughtfully instead of reacting in ways that often lead to mistakes and hurt.

Time is not your enemy, it's your ally.
We almost never need to react to
anything immediately. It's almost always
appropriate to react within the next few
minutes and even with the next few hours
or days. If you simply say to a child
[music] who might have crossed the line,
"This is something that needs to be
addressed, but I want to cool down. I
[music] want to relax. I want to think
about this." And then we're going to
have a conversation about it. I love you
no matter what. I know [music] you love
me and this was a mistake, but give me
some time to think about what the right
next step is going to be. Those types of
messaging [music] to children I think
can be extremely powerful. And time is
not your enemy. You can [music] utilize
time in a way in which it is
extraordinarily helpful. And when we
view time in the opposite as an enemy
and we need to jump in and quickly fill
in [music] the blank, it almost always
results in failure and destruction.
