I've just wanted to tell this story
since
1970.
>> There's definitely going to be crying,
an incredible sadness, and incredible
joy and jubilation. You wake up the next
day and you're like, "What's wrong with
my body? Is Is Is broken? Why am I What
makes me so different?" You don't go to
sleep wake up.
And you don't go to sleep walk.
And you're really isolated.
I was an intravenous drug user. I used
to shoot up heroin. It was introduced to
me by my brother.
I don't know whether I was running away
or to something. The turning point came
when
I woke up in the middle of the night. My
whole apartment was filled with smoke.
And I run outside and the shul was on
fire. I mean, like
on fire.
He kicked the door.
He got the Torah. I took all the
tefillin bags and threw them out the
window and cleaned them off.
And then the roof caved in. Then the
next day
the whole shul chipped in and brought me
my tefillin, siddur, and tallis. And
they all put tefillin on for the first
time. They wrapped it for me. We all had
a good cry together. And after that, I
never missed putting on tefillin a
single day [music] after that. I feel
like
like they always say that you're not
returning to Hashem, you're returning to
yourself. And I'm finally
loving myself and supporting myself and
doing the things
not to prove that I'm
better or worse or not to prove
anything, but
I'm just back.
