Welcome back Dr. Dubovick to the Status
Island show. A question a viewer sent
in. Why should someone go to a licensed
therapist versus a Hamisha counselor?
>> It's It's the same way that you want to
make sure that you would call Hatzalah
and not
your neighbor to do CPR.
Also, you would not call a Hatzalah
member, as good as they are, to do open
heart surgery unless they are a
cardiologist.
You would not call a cardiologist to do
brain surgery.
So, with that being said,
a licensed therapist such as a licensed
social worker, a licensed mental health
counseling,
or psychologist or psychiatrist is very
important to understand that they are
guided by rules and regulations and that
there is oversight. Someone who does
does not have this licensure or the
training is no guarantee and no recourse
if something goes wrong. We all hear
tragic tragic stories
that
can happen by someone who is not
licensed. As well, there is
unfortunately cases of people who are
licensed unfortunately doing the wrong
thing, but those are very rare. And with
a licensed professional, there is
recourse. You could complain to the
state, they could lose their license,
they are
able to be sued for malpractice. While
someone who is not a licensed
professional,
buyer beware.
