This year, Rosh Hashanah 2026, the first day
of Rosh Hashanah is Shabbat, and you have to
have three meals on Shabbat. So what most people
do is they come home from shul after davening,
and then they have the first part of their
meal. They'll wash, have salads, have some fish,
then they'll take a break, they'll bench, they'll
go for a walk, they'll learn something, they'll
play a board game, they'll come back 20-30 minutes
later, and then wash again, have bread again,
and then have their third meal. That way, you have
three meals on Shabbat. The reason why you can't
have Shalosh Seudot later in the day as usual
on Shabbat is because since the following day
is the second day of Rosh Hashanah, which is also
Yom Tov, a way of honoring Yom Tov is entering
into Yom Tov hungry and excited for the meal, and
therefore you're not supposed to eat a meal within
approximately 3 hours of Yom Tov. So you can't eat
Shalosh Seudot later in the day, and therefore the
practice of most is to divide up their lunch
meal in order to have three meals on Shabbat.
