today we're uh we're doing the kinos uh in in an empty shoe um and uh hopefully we're all able to so in some way virtually be together to be messiable to mourn over the is to mourn over the destruction of the base i'll take a minute just to introduce you to the format this morning which is going to be similar to ways we've done it and structured things in the past so in order to facilitate the kinos we're going to be using you'll have available on the screen uh you know the kinos that we're going to be saying we're not actually we'll be moving around a little bit with some of the different uh ones we're going to be starting ultimately we're going to be starting when we get to it which is um what is it i think it's it's not on this list she's on this list okay page 31 number 16. thank you thank you for finding that um so we're going to be doing a number of keynotes we're going to be doing business divided up over the morning we're going to be talking in between in order to be able to have an enhanced appreciation of what it is of course that we're crying over and as in past years we're going to be framing our discussion in and around a personality a personality who was associated with khurban with destruction and opinion and with reconstruction in our own time we've taken to this mode of doing the kinos around a person for the past many years it has its own there are many ways of course to do kinos and this this one seems to have its own value has its own value on one level because we say that the death of the righteous is like the burning of the vasa when we see a person when we have the chance to see and to live with a person whose life exemplifies the presence of hashem whose life is lived according to every value that we strive for it helps us we ourselves are supposed to be in that same mode we are supposed to be not just building a nice building for the presence of hashem but building ourselves could be in our midst and we also get to see by looking at the life of a personality we get to see an example of someone who really knew how to cry and know how to translate those tears into action for the first kina for the first two kinos that we're going to be going to be doing i would like to really focus on the bass on english on the bass itself the core element of mourning which we have on tissue you know that the um english was a place which we built in the midst of the jewish people in the center of khalisri where hashem came to reside for hashem could make himself at home it's strange it's hard to understand the philosophical question when he built the base on ming dash how could we build a home for you the heavens the heavens and the uppermost heavens the greatest fears they would not be able to contain they'd not be able to to hold you in this house but hashem wants to come he wants to be in our midst he wants to be in our midst when he can feel at home in our midst when he can feel welcome in our midst and the destruction of the vasant dash is when hashem says like he said before like he said when we first turned away from him at the time of the achilles of the golden calf and he said i'm not comfortable in your midst i can't be there in your midst that's our world a world where doesn't feel at home a world where our relationship with the service of hashem is where we're constantly turning to hashem and asking for things we died when we dive in well when we feel like we die and will it's that we've connected to hashem to ask him for what's really on our minds we asked hashem for things it's very different than avodah in the days when we served him when we welcomed him into our midst what we did for him instead of asking him constantly to do for us and today on tish above we mourn the destruction of both we mourn a world where hashem isn't welcome imagine the base of english imagine that place that loomed above you where everyone came the jewish people flocked on the real modern on the true festivals when the jewish people flocked from all the corners of the land to come to see the face of hashem and to be seen by the presence of hashem was so visibly clear that he was at home amongst the jewish people that this was the place of his holiness that everyone in the world would pray via the vasanas they would all recognize that this was the center of the world and the pathway to which prayers would ascend to russia imagine a world where hashem feels at home imagine a world where we can have that rich base that center of the we have shared the story together i'm sure many times we've shared the story in our own home around our seder table dozens of times it's a story of the puna vijarov on one of his travels he traveled he traveled before the holocaust he traveled when he was a roven punevish but this is a story of one of his travels from earth's israel after the war when he was traveling to find to meet the platon survivors when he traveled to rome in italy there were many israel himself as we'll see later came via italy to territory but he came to rome and the way the story is told he arrived he arrived at the place where he would stay and he asked the host he asked this host he says please i want to go out there i want you to take me out the host was astounded he said you just arrived it's late at night it's pouring rain we're not going to do anything tonight i can't take you anywhere real time he says i want you to take me out now and the man of course is seated to the pond of israel's the arch of titus which has on it a depiction of titus bringing back the kalin bringing back the vessels of the vasa after its conquest a picture of the menorah and the caleb and the aries the vessels of the basin flesh huge arch an ancient arch that was built to celebrate the triumph that was built to celebrate our destruction and the punisher ruff got out of the car walked up to the arch of titus he was a distinguished man he straightened his frock his coat and his hat and he stood and he said we're still here where are you what's become of you we're still here it's a story it's a story which speaks of natasha israel distant far away but claudius dwell remains and israel has nets israel which remains remains home and remains together i want to read you a little bit of the gemara of titus and his destruction of the basal english so we could feel it a little bit and if it's okay i want to add something into this tomorrow in a homiletic fashion what i'm saying is not an interpretation of it more i'll read you the new mortise straight but i want to say to you adrush because we're here about the front of israel that story that i just told you that i just shared with you is a story which is i find it the most beautiful story but it's a story which conveys the person the strength the personality to go out there i have to go i have to face down the mahrif and tell them we're going to survive part of israel was a magnificent personality you could still meet people who knew him who met him he mentioned to someone ask someone about the pun of israel a look comes over their face he was such a i never had this close i never had a privilege to meet him but i i've had this was to meet many who did i know my own father was a friend of russia who was not a hero worshiper he's a very very careful person every year there was the yeshua the adelphian shiva is descended as a fundraiser they used to send some of you may remember this they would send an 8x10 picture of a little israel they said that you know some places said the calendar some places and you know they sent a picture of a girl and [Music] my father would get them and they would go in the door there was one picture which he put up in his office and that was the kind of visuals like for men partnership wrote for they will say where is their god the rock in whom they trusted this refers to the evil titus that he blasphemed and he cursed towards the rabona shalom he took a sword and he cut in he stabbed the parietas the curtain the naziness and a miracle happened laying down in that space be right and blood came from the parentheses because silver herring is answering and titus thought himself i killed god as it says i would say wrath of the careers your enemies roared in the midst of your meeting place they took their symbols as meaningful symbols who you hear the blasphemy of that wicked person and you're quiet hashem could have looked knocked him out in a second because his world was quiet the world is one where hashem is quiet who is like you amongst the mighty hashem and now we say the who is like you mute quiet silence hashem just took it you let him do it he moved out of his house it's an empty house now you destroyed something which was already a shell which was already destroyed what did it do now tell us how hard it is big sheep this big blanket and he wrapped it up by shivam and he put it in a boat lately to go into boast in his city in rome where those caleb still sit where those utensils of the magnus still sit until this day they will take pride in the city for what it is that they have done so he's traveling and he's traveling to rome with and a wave of the ocean stood to drown him to top to top of the boat omari said it seems to me that the god of the jews he only knows how to fight on the [Music] me too a heavenly voice came out and said to him you are a wicked person the son of a wicked person the grandson of the wicked ace of burial doesn't expel its waste go ahead go to the dry land fight with my mosquito oh they landed and lodged itself in his brain and it bothered him for seven years was walking past the blacksmith's shop show my colors and there was banging going on in the blacksmith chop the blacksmith's hammer and the mosquito stopped stopped buzzing in his head omari says i have a solution i have a solution it doesn't you know when there's a hammer going it stops so he hired people or he appointed people every day he had blacksmiths banging in front of him and that was better for him than the bug that was bustling in his brain the gemara tells him how much he would pay them he would pay enough re this much announced this much for a jew he said i don't have to pay you see me suffering like this that's the way it says that more only worked for 30 days after 30 days the mosquito got already accustomed to the sounds of the hammer and went back to doing its thing and to drive it towards his teeth was crazy opposite to rebuild he said i'm the only one who's left from a hundred and seventy plus in litter he was away and he didn't want to just rebuild his own he wanted to rebuild all 18 of them and he built and he built that he built he built what he was in punebush and he built when he was in here's israel and he couldn't stop building people asked a man in his eighties running around trying to generate support for another project another project and people say boss you know why already why so you already have you've done take it easy he says what can i do i'm addicted to building he said i have a weakness i have to build let's look at this bug and the only thing that caused the bug to become was the sound of a hammer it was the sound of construction of rebuilding type that was what quieted the bug in history but if you never got used to it you never got tired after 30 days it kept that it kept at it and it had to keep coming and keep going that was the opposition to titus i think i could read one more passage of the gomorrah and draw one more homiletic comparison in the spirit of the foundation want to say it by himself burton cremated him to live in the rain and spread his ashes over seven seas he said that's the only way i'm going to escape god god has it in for me i destroyed his face on english how do i destroy this place look what i did look like this god he chased me in the sea he tortured me in my life i don't want him to keep coming after me so take my remains turn them into ash and spread them over seven seeds he'll never be able to get his name is they gather my ash all of it from the seven seas the dying way and they punish me more the cold lay um and then they scatter that's broken where are you where are you you can't even find his ashes only if they're above us and his desire to make things right finds those ashes and puts them back together to just destroy them again just to destroy them again and what was the point of israel fisher of also spent his life collecting ashes the ashes that others tried to create the ashes that others did create the ashes of the six million the ashes of all those precious lithuanian jews that the fun of israel wanted to eternalize and he they who wanted to give us the ashes and brought them back together and he rebuilt the first one sixteen sahara sanctuary titus destruction of the base english again it's king number 16 in whichever edition in whichever edition you have think about it more over the destruction of the basal english me it's important for us to explore the role of crying of crying the role of mourning we've mentioned before in other years how the raman writes in raman writes in the in the laws of the end of the twelfth chapter that part of the process of a novel is he should be afraid and he should worry we have fascism and he should explore his actions and he should do children the pelets a person has to be in anguish and worried over the forbade he says as being anguish and anguish is about the past and the egg to worry is to worry about the future to worry about the future it doesn't just mean to fret to worry about the future means to try to make a better future you know that tish above is preceded by three weeks where we read haftarus of puranas a warning of pain of anguish of cry and then it's followed by seven weeks seven weeks where we'd have told us the comfort of coming back to hashem which doesn't just mean comfort in muhammad doesn't just mean don't worry everything's gonna be okay it means that we have to come back to hashem so that everything could be okay and the last of those seven weeks as you know is the shabbos before rosh hashanah tish above starts the process of chuva it takes us to rosh hashanah tilly has the assassination to the 10 days of trump the crying is supposed to lead to something but let's focus for now on the crying today is thursday what's the significance of that when was perry said this year what day of the week also thursday it's a part it's a feature of the of the jewish calendar right the first day of pesach is always the same day of the weakness the feature of the calendar of the fixed calendar of the jewish people we note this feature we commemorate this feature by having an egg like the hard-boiled egg that's on the seder plate the egg that we eat at the beginning of the meal to remember the reminds us that these karbanas that we remember on the seder plate we don't have a base and the link between pesach and tish above is thus made more sharp and it's a significant belief because you understand that when we left mitsray and we left mitra and we left we're trying to go to the heritage of us to the land flowing with milk and honey to the land which hashem had promised to our forefathers that's what we left for we left to go there you know we have four cups of wine at the seder for the hour of china is for the four but we don't drink that fourth cup it sits in the middle of the table because the whole seder is around the bringing their s fruit spanking hashem arami we came to israel the story of tisha beau is the story of the interruption of that journey tish above is the break from pesach now we know about a story of the sages who gathered around together to celebrate at a very difficult time there was a story they were muslim they were there in the neighborhood and they were telling the story against yesterday i know that many of you have heard there's a classic lord that many say so why were they in bedrock why were they with herbie akiva was the junior member of the group a person is supposed to go to their rebbe anjantiv here they went to the students they went to the talmud and many say beautifully that the story took place after khurban beta after the damage the destruction of beta which was seven years after the destruction of the english when hopes had sprung up again for the jewish people for rebirth and they were dashed and destroyed and morris and gittin's descriptions of the of the catastrophe of beta the pictures which in draws of stacks of corpses are reminiscent of the video images which we see the gravy video images and pictures which we see of the liberators of the concentration camps of what they found there they were devastated people so what will they do how do you celebrate pesach in that context and the answer is you go to arabic because there's another story another famous story about rabbi akiva with many of those sages and they were traveling and they came to hara tofin excuse me i'm sorry first story and they hear the roar of the stadiums of rome from 120 mil from 120 miles away maybe they were the stadiums of rome maybe they were the stadiums that the romans had built in the land they still viking and they started to cry they were hearing the celebration right the roar of the crowd the romans were celebrating and they were devastated was laughing they said what are you doing what are you laughing today he said why are you crying they said look at these people they're idol worshipers they're secure they're happy they're gathered in their stadiums they're celebrating and we based the footstool [Music] it's burning the fire we shouldn't weep uh he said that's why i'm laughing if hashem gives such joy to those who go against this will imagine what he has in store for us it's a view of the wrong thing on our eyes and then before they had a different structure on their lives what they saw was a shul-shiyatsu base coach we saw a wild animal fox walking out of the holy of holes and they started crying except for where people was laughing why are you laughing why are you crying the bass [Music] the crying gobble could only go into the holy of holies once a year none of us could ever go into that part of the building and now wild animals are roaming around there and we shouldn't cry the building will be destroyed foxes will roam i see it and you know what else i see is boys and girls playing actually until i saw the prophecy of korea fulfilled these words so they said beautiful that's where they went for pesach to celebrate gula freedom when there was darkness to celebrate miracles when they didn't see it they had to go through akima who reminded them that all of the tourists all the difficulties that came that were expected in a sense to come should also give us expectations about the good things about the buildings so they went in for basically because of akiba left and i have a question where they go from tisha broof [Music] what are they keeping them on tischendorf you've always laughed he didn't just laugh here the gomorrah says in sanhedrin that reveal once went to visit with the same group chocola melies they were all crying ruby was laughing they all told rebellion about oh he had been so valuable to them in the past henry suffering is a wonderful thing suffering is precious he said prop me up in bed i want to hear what everybody has to say you think it's only somebody else's source probably ezra's problems you think it's only call yourself problems you know in in ghazal it was reading shaman in in one of the versions of ghazal it says he was laughing he was smiling he was saying ah i get to be my surname wasn't just somebody else's difficulties that he left so what are we keeping them on tish above and we need to understand it you know because if there was a rabia in our generation not in our generation so much but there were in in our century it was the fun visual who ironically was the builder of the neighborhood which has a big street you know it also has streets for upon a miserable so whether they cry what are we give a cry there's one story about making a crying crazy not just crying pulling his hair out in but it's around this story of her being keeping it really isn't his story interestingly is similar to a story of rabia kim's own life but both of them were of them started to learn torah very late in their lives both of them became great in the jewish people was earlier he was a student who as you know right at the time of the destruction who interacted with us like the boss of titus where he has been grouping us was his student and we have people was early as a reporter assistant student one of the students of earlier students really of the students but a student of this as well they both learned to start to learn late in life there are many things about him but one of the things wasn't you know that he was the one in that famous story where he had an argument he said if i'm right so the tree should prove it the tree lifted up from the ground right the river should prove it the river changed course if i'm writing the walls of madrid the heavenly voice came out and said and as a result of that story is considered by his contemporaries to be too aggressive in pursuing the being like him not using proper methods and they put him in prayer they distanced themselves from and for many years he was distant and people didn't learn from him and i just read to you two stories parts of two stories about when they came to see him when he was dying they came to see when he was dying he hasn't worked on us wasn't so thrilled along the way if they'll die their own death if they'll die naturally i saw a ruby mouse predicted by ruby has been marcus i'm believing i keep myself in my review and said how about me so the laser hookers took his two arms and he put them on his heart and he said my two arms are like two separate irish like two rolled up sephora tyrosine we imagine this like arcified the two sides of the safety [Music] i didn't take from my teachers as much as a dog laps up from the sea when it goes to take a drink from the sea habitat i taught a lot of toronto media like a month my students took from me like an applicator dips into a pocket into a tube you know for for the for the ointment or the makeup when it comes at us the lord leaves and he goes on and he speaks about all that a lot because they didn't show up they never learned it from them because they didn't show up they engaged him in learning and after the burial our father our father is israel and its rider remember that's what alicia said about it i have a lot of coins and i have no banker to take it to to change it to make me able to do something with it it tells this story with other embellishments there would be akiva cry and he said rebbe i live for iraq rabbi teach me taira have a neighborhood the secrets of shirashi is couldn't take it he raised his voice he wept bye remy bye remy they started oh my gosh lord whoa our teacher the world is left orphaned from you that's when we keep a cry when he realized the last opportunities that he wasn't going to get back he didn't cry about the future people cried they thought it was over he didn't cry it was never over you're alive you could do more but when something slipped through his fingers the muva the missing which can't be fixed which can't be replaced you know what the gemara says what happens if a person misses kriyashma one evening mrs kriesha one morning can never make it up you never make it up because they create 400 times the next day you still miss saying krishna of that time there are some things that we can never make up and we could cry over those things we must cry over those things we must cry over those empty spaces does that mean that you're just sitting there weeping no you don't sit there with me the weeping drives you to not miss another minute not miss another krishna not neglect to take advantage of the rebbe that's still there move move forward we keep a laugh he laughed on pesa he laughed at they stood by the arabians he saw there's going to be a wonderful future nothing about what we're missing says that there can't be the greatest future in the world wake up rabbi akiva famously awakened his talmudian a beautiful madrish that says that yakiva was teaching and his students were sleeping right so what does that mean he was starting the great rabbinic tradition ruby akiva was his students were sleeping his students said you know look what we're living in what kind of a world this is it's irrelevant it's irrelevant we're irrelevant nothing matters they were asleep and he woke them up he woke them up and he said all right so madrish we're not gonna that'll speak just very very quickly about the matter she woke them up and he said that esther who's the granddaughter of sora who lived 127 years came and she ruled over 127 nadines 127 countries and they woke up wow i don't know in my rabbinical school they taught us that if everybody's falling asleep you tell a joke you know like why don't you tell a funny story what's this he told them this thing 127 127 so we always explain that sarah and esther had very similar lives and very different lives saru was beautiful the king wanted her the king took her against her will esther was beautiful the king wanted her the king took her against her will same right except there was a different ending to the story sarah that night hashem brought miracles and sarah got sent away with parole sending them off with great wealth she wasn't touched esther lived in the house of aharish till the end of her life she was married to that mino she had a child with that minoval kashira vanity of oddity and purim we invoked when we say those three words when esther says we switch from the mcgillis esther to the bouncy maguila's esther tomb to the dirge same story said rabbi akiva it's the same story you know that esther built the second base you know that that child that esther had with that maneuverable hashem he built the second base you know that esther there in the palace she saved the jewish people hashem was with esther like he was with sarah sometimes it's with fireworks and makos and great things and sometimes it's a tragic story but hashem is still there and so is talmidam woke up as tom eden woke up famously one of his most famous lines everybody knows he said it i think he said it to many others i've heard so it was the rava rashi there were chief rabbi verts israel the first chief rabbi of when their show became a state and in the part of israel's time and he the one of israel talked to him worked with him and talked to him about his plans to do to build torah and our heads like i said you're dreaming and the thought of israel it's true i'm dreaming it says but the difference between me and others is that when i dream i'm awake i don't dream in my sleep but i dream i'm awake funny his people around him knew he would wake up in the morning and he would say quick quick he would give them the ideas the new plans which ran through his head during the night realms of ideas you cry and tish above because if you don't stop to realize what you lost you're never driven to go forward for the future ruby akiva he cried he pulled out his hair over a believer and one thing is for sure he washed off those tear stain sheets and he was he was on fire he was now ready to go he was never going to lose an opportunity again if he could help it and so you have to cry reveal because when you cry and you realize what titus did in the video when you cry and you realize that hashem is home in this world that we haven't made a home for him in this world when you cry and you realize how many jews were destroyed killed and tortured how much torah was ripped out of the world and you stop for a minute and you cry and you realize the loss the whole polls that will never be able to be made up you have a chance to then be motivated and driven to build i read an interview that somebody did with the punisher of he asked him about his marvelous success in the yeshiva and what he had built and the pawn of israel looked at him like with upset he says we're going to take pride in our successes every success makes me afraid because it shows me what could be accomplished if i succeeded then you can accomplish something you have to do more responsibility is very heavy we can bring claudiuso back to the torah successes we have so much to do give out we act lazy and the fun of israel ralph told him about the wonderful guests that he had at his home from the yeshua from shabbos and he said it wasn't one of the star tall medium of panavish was of birmingham became a rash yeshiva in there were two american boys in panavish one had been there for a year and a half and one had been there for six months the one who had been there for six months you know had come upon puna vision some trip he had taken near israel it happened even then was intoxicated by the sound of tyra and his parents his mother agreed that he could come to learn in the yeshiva six months he'd been in the yeshiva he says and he's already he knows how he learns with me tonight he learned to gemara arashiya the one who's here a year and a half well what he's accomplishing and learning these are the nashamus of the jewish people the souls of the jewish people the power of tyra is hidden in the heart of every jew all it needs is a small push a readiness a sign of awakening and the pure jewish soul is revealed for all to see if that's the case what are we doing about it what are we involved with how are we fulfilling our obligations there are winds of chuba coursing through the jewish world and we're silent this is early 60s this interview before 67 before people started talking about the winds of children coursing through the world those were the tears of the pune of israel the tears of what could be accomplished he cried over his community built a world he was a rav in a town called vijj in lithuania he came there his instruction from the his rebbe who saw his immense potential he said wherever you are of you have to make the issue and he made the issue and then the first world war came along and destroyed the city and destroyed his issue and after the first world war shortly after the first world war he was invited to become the raven pony vision which was one of the three big cities and i think the second biggest city after covenant in northern jewish and in pune he took what was the famous small kibbutz of the of the puna vision of the previous orbital puna fisher he had a small group of geniuses that he cultivated and learned he maybe a sheep of hundreds he built a high school what we would call ishii vekitana he built a day school he built a basiaco he built an orphanage he built a hospital he built in ponyvish in lithuania he ran to raise money to build and to build and to build in punjabish and then the second world war was coming and in 1940 lithuania was between germany and russia famous moment we've talked about it many times you all know about it it's the time when you're yeshiva and other yeshivas came to vilna who was a magnificent person he was a leader extraordinaire he also occupied one of the jewish seats in the same in the lithuanian parliament and he was sent together with the covenant of ramadan the rav of kavanaugh the two of them were sent by the lithuanian government to find a solution for the jews they knew it was a matter of time they sent them to america they had diplomatic passports to go to america to try to gain entry permits for 5 000 jews to come to america and they travel together the governor of and uh and the part of israel the dvara brother they traveled together through germany through austria down south to italy where they were going to go from trieste they were going to go to travel and the the covenant of became ill and he couldn't make the trip and he went back to covenant he died in covenant and uh the punisher of was there and he had to make a decision he felt that he knew what was happening in america he knew that america had slammed the door he felt it was a futile mission and he felt he had a better chance in europe's israel had a better chance in here's israel it was two weeks before pesach a couple weeks before pesach and he traveled here it's israel it happens that he had a brother who lived in ireland he sort of his mother was the nearest mother lived in tel aviv at that time and he uh and he traveled there it's he's through he had his son in air teacher and the other as we'll discuss later he also had a mandate from that the future would be an answer and he called his wife from italy spoke to her disgusted with her she told him that he should go there to israel and he left there at israel and then the nazi noose tightened around lithuania was never able to go back and his city was destroyed his thousand students were destroyed his wife and three children three sons two sons and a daughter that were left there in litha were destroyed the uh everything was destroyed and the part of azeroth lived with the fact that he said like i saved myself but i didn't save my generation right there's a famous madrish which speaks about versus when hashem was upset with the jewish people maisha abbaynum said if you don't save them don't save me and he managed to save not only himself but the entire jewish people naya holy saved himself only saved himself and that's why they're called the waters of nyach he was haunted by this he was haunted by what he didn't do he was hunted by what he had left but he was driven to rebuild it so the story one of the famous stories of the pun of israel and is worthy of being such a story it's the story with which we entitled tonight's today's discussion rebuilding a destroyed world hazard those who plant with tears harvest with joy ton of israel was there near to israel working still papers he thought everybody was alive some degrees they were and he met a man who was a big businessman in here it's israel at that time who owned real estate in benebrach which was nothing but anybody was a hamlet his name was helper if you're in here to israel you see a lot of stores that sell eyeglasses help her that's part of his part of his uh his uh empire and bianco help her he came to america for help he had to get to go to beirut to get some papers to try to get certificates for his family whatever long story and he comes out of jakob halpern's house and he looks out at the hill which is the hill atop which the pawn of his yeshiva sits today and it was an empty hill and the pawn of israel said this would be a perfect place to build the issue then halpern owned a real estate and he said if you'll build a yeshiva there i'll give it to you for a song and he sold it to him for a very small amount of money the fun of israel committed then and there to build the yeshua for panavish that was still alive he was building yeshua was in a rush to build it because he needed a place to bring everybody he got a postcard in the middle of this time from his brother-in-law of usher kalman baron who was a partner of his yeshiva and he sent him a postcard with code the factory is functioning at full capacity which he understood the yeshiva they were with all the taurus they were going strong heartened him so much and so he went and he said we're going to pour the foundation of the yeshiva he had no nothing he had no money he had the piece of land and one afternoon was his his own birthday thomas tafsin alif he got together khazanesh sorry 28th of year his 55th birthday he got together to start his life again all that day he was fast all that day he was crying and he asked a few people to come with him descendants are still abundant in neighborhood they had a couple of boards he had some some seltzer and cookies nobody had it puna vijarov the story is told cried so copiously that they didn't need to mix water into the sand just as tears they said till him this yeshiva is going to flourish because hazard people who plant with tears will harvest with joy there's a famous messiah famous tradition one of the great good islam i think asked of khaim velozen how is it that he built the yeshiva yeshiva flourished he became the mother of all yeshivas and when he built the yeshiva the base of frying with the frames but it didn't go anywhere and kai velozener said so what did you do when you founded the yeshiva well tell me how you how you celebrated it he said on that day we didn't say that there was a day of festivity a day of celebration there was music there was a parade prime lesnar said on the day that i founded if rabbi akiva just left he wouldn't have been ruby akira it was because there will be a keeper cried and left that's right remember we're about to read the story of the asara ruge malchus was burning and the king had placed caesar that placed cotton on his heart to postpone his passing so it would take a long time for him to die to be tortured fantastic get rich quick somebody tells you you can make a million dollars in a minute you cry or you laugh you rejoice you dance he cried and he said a person can be kind of loving he says yeah because you realize we could do every minute not just get in oh i could do something great in a minute i gotta tell them every minute i could do something which is every moment i could do something which is how can you give up a minute that's why ravi akima was crying his eyes out about the death of a believer i've been working us what i missed why what i could have had one of the great russian yeshiva the first great washi were here sorry just such a rich life it's an amazing life so the part of israel did this in 1941 the building didn't go anywhere quickly then he was diagnosed in 42 or 43 with throat cancer he lost his voice he was diagnosed with throat cancer and he was told that he had less than a year to live he said i can't wait so he called rashmul razovsky who was a young talmud was for 50 years i believe maybe 40 50 years he was a restricted i studied to this day i remember when i was in the shoot i still have it somewhere in my house the handwritten notes from rav shmuel shear were were photocopied somebody had very good handwriting and wrote the very photocopied and bound together we had them i have it on sketching and he got together seven tell me them in the basement from nebraska and the punishment he was dying he had to make sure that it happened sort of he said the eulogy on the puna vijaya spoke about it's a beautiful beautiful husband but he said something on apostol when the foundations are crumbling righteous one what did he do and some read this as a question on the reminders of rabanasha what are you doing the world is crumbling said rap shmuel no when the world is crumbling that sadiq says what can i do what can i do to stop it from crumbling what can i do to make it right he says that was our rabbit that was the punisher of the world was crumbling and he just asked himself what he could do his student review who was the magnificent personality rather than ramata sharon his brother mahatma muhammad gershwin still a russian part of it i think it's 100 years old still says sheer he said the part of his rub and he had to climb the hill you know whatever you always have to climb those you had to climb the hill for the basement sometimes he was older and was winded he would go to the base meadows to give a shear he would pause and he would reach into his pocket fill out his wallet and pull out a picture you look at the picture put back the wallet into his pocket and keep walking it was a picture of his children who were killed in the holocaust his wife and his children were killed in the holocaust carried around with him and whenever he felt a little weak he looked at the picture some people look at the picture and collapse in a heap he looked at the picture and he said i got to do what was destroyed i have to do that was the punishment of there's tons more to say we'll say more on other things i wanna just a couple of things that we have to say before we go on to say two kinase one would say see when it's trying and the other one has a hell of a night so we cry over last opportunity i wanted to show you how real this is for tishrov because the origin of tisha buff is in the sin of the marathon right the sin of the spies we said we didn't want to go to earth israel it was attractive it was there it was ready for us he said we don't want to go we were crying that we didn't want to go and said this will be the time for generations when you're going to cry because you can't go then you could go you cried over going you're going to cry for generations of the diaries that you wish you could go so what happened on tisha brown sasha made a decree made of xavier what was the xaire that the jewish people would be in the desert for 40 years and the next generation would go and what were those four years what happened during those 40 years okay 38 years what happened during those 38 years you know what happened nothing how do i know nothing happened because in the torah it doesn't say anything well what happened tyra ends right you have slach right all the first year and then it jumps ahead and parshas right away to the death of miriam to the end of time we have no stories told to us after the story of kara which happened as most understand that him but right after the maraguan because there was some disillusionment with maishra because the rahman says amazing thing says korach always wanted to attack but until hashem had to create that we wouldn't go in terrence israel nobody would have taken it when they when when hashems agreed so then his opinion poll numbers went down his approval numbers went down and korov was able to attack it but then it skips because nothing happened of impact you know what those years were they were what's it called in football playing down the clock you know just waiting for the last minutes to go hold the ball don't do anything it wasn't by choice hashem said you guys aren't going anyplace we're just going to wait could you imagine i mean in a sense it was unbelievable they were in the mid border they were eating the man in the presence of hashem but hashem was saying to them nothing is going to come of you just waiting for your children next generation nothing that's what you cry over tish above we cry over wasted time lost opportunities wasted generations and that motivates us to move was old coming with days what does it mean coming with days said upon and there are many interpretations of it but his interpretation is priceless he says you know when people are young they think about what they're going to do the next year and the next year and the next year and you know there's also an expression like wait till next year if they make plans this is when when a person's old they know you know what's the expression right they don't buy green bananas right you know when they're old they say what do we do today i'm from zoo and he was old baba young he thought about every single day what i'm gonna do i don't want to miss i don't want to miss an opportunity tisha brown's last opportunity for that we cry and plenty to make up all these years of hashem's magnus and moons all of that homelessness of the urbanism so you have a lot to think about when you say that from this story but where it came from from those people wherever yes said you won't die now you'll be there last opportunity or be a kiva worst of them all and they burned to safer terra and they said what do you see and said i see i see his purpose i see the letters flying just the parchment is being burnt he said i'm okay because if it was just me that they were burning okay but they're burning the torah i know that the tiger will be back and if i'm being burnt along with the torah that means i'll be back too the one who's taiveya one who makes sure that the tire will return we'll make sure i'll be back as well the punivizer rub used to say in his inimitable fashion he says so those letters the romans were destroying they were burning and those letters floated off of the veal they floated off of the parchment and they fly through the air and what's our job we have to get another parchment we have to put it down in a safe place so that the letters can come back down and fill that parchment and he said that's my job that's our job the torah was burned the letters are flying we have to find a place to put it down when the part of israel traveled by train on his last journey from punishment so he said they traveled to germany they traveled through austria when they crossed over occupied austria into italy people on the train started screaming fried fried free free we're free twins before pesa and the pandavas gerov said when i left egypt when i left it was going but he didn't know what to feel he was leaving the train he was leaving hitler he was leaving the nazis he was leaving europe which was going up in flames but he was leaving the place of torah what was then the first torah the homo you know the gemara says bavel had a little bit of a legend israel because of the places of torah he was leaving to a place where it was just beginning now here's israel has both claims it's israel and it's the land of tyra to a large part to the credit of the punisher of potassium meats dragon stacey so we're going to say two nice now one of them is called that it's a refrain where we speak about the magnificence of what happened when we left the triangle and the horror of what happened when we left back and forth and then right afterwards we'll say the kinah of the asara regime on page 5859 it's it's akina number 31 london alex in your books lupanova love jews yet an average israel a love of jews that's that was indescribable you know tish above we mourn the destruction of the same english we also mourn the killing of at this point we could say countless jews we have of course the the six million of the holocaust that we mourn anticipate but there were millions that gomorrah describes the destructions of all the water magdalenes the crusades the blood-soaked history of the jewish people all the destruction and all of the tsar all of the anguish a lot of tish above is crying about people not just about the bash the first kinna shavasuru many number six the first one in the booklet will say later it doesn't speak so much about the verse speaks a lot more about the jewish people the suffering the jewish people ironically it's opening line shavasuru many move away from me move away from me i'm coming distancing it's not a it's not a it's not a joke people stayed away they kept their distance from us we speak about gula gather us in from the four corners of the earth and the jewish people were despicable and they were unapproachable right we went right in our little winter here all our little year we went from 100 000 people gathered in one place and celebrating you know to not having a minion not being able to hear you know we have a couple people here in the room so that i'm not you know talking into the other you know everybody's far away from each other with our faces covered shavasuru many a lot of suffering when there's a kingdom soccer is work with our senate beneath his feet it was what appeared as a sapphire brick rashi writes with ghazal say that kept that brick in front of him from the sheba mitzrayim he was remembering the jewish people who were toiling slaving away at brickwork and hashem never for a moment looked away from the suffering from the pain of the jewish people when khalifa suffers the gemara says what is this right my head is killing my arm is killing what we're when we're suffering he's suffering hashem shares our pain and we always have to ask ourselves if we join in sharing in the pain of others was the person who took the jewish people out of mitsrayam because he walked out of the palace out of his safe haven and he went to see what the jewish people were experiencing right now aina of the liberal put his eyes in his heart to see what they were going through and the next thing you know puts his eyes and his heart rash uses the same words but his eyes and his heart the empathy of the jewish people the empathy with the jewish people to move to action happens when the jewish people start feeling for each other i would point out to you two things just you know it's too delicious tyra maybe to say on tisha brook too delicious attire to say on tisha but it's a tyrant of the bay samindas and that is so we say the best we mentioned before this is the heavens is my throne and the earth is my footstool but where on the earth is hashem's footstool so what do we say we said that this morning say it every day what was it it was the sapphire brick reminding of the troubles the trials and tribulations the brickwork of the jewish people home down here now one could say when the revision doesn't need a home down here he's got plenty of place but if he's down here then he could know what we're feeling he's a little bit more close to us we can come and whisper in his ear no long distance charges right jim comes down i want to see what's going on had the imran his footstool is where he feels what the jewish people are going through that's the brick and you know what shlaim allah said about the day it's the place where hashem says amy the libya my eye and my heart is there all over the place it's the same iron heart of compassion english is built of compassion certainly the second base of english was destroyed because of lack of compassion because people didn't care because they hated each other they spited each other because when somebody was embarrassed and humiliated people kept eating their dinner and they didn't stand up and do something about it because nobody cares if we don't notice the pain and the destruction of people the people are going through if we're lucky enough that our job is intact or our business is intact if we're lucky enough that's you know in our world of social distancing we have other family members in the same room in the same house in the same building we're not sitting alone but we're fine is going to be built from caring the bricks are going to be the bricks of empathy the eyes and the heart of empathy and when we mourn on tisha but we have to think about all the suffering of people the millions then and the millions now so i want to tell you a famous speech of the punisher earth it's unbelievable fantastic you see the ton of giraffe i started to say before but i couldn't finish so try again the fun of israel had many things which hunted one of the things which haunted him was he traveled all the time from plunders as we said i mentioned you before i mean he he visited south africa he had a legendary relationship with south african jewelry very significant relationship with that south africa he traveled there before arts history it's a big there is a big community of lithuanian expatriates in south africa the community in south africa is a very little community and he traveled there traveled there to help build his institutions and and more we'll talk about it later but um he left all the time when he left amitoya shabaz the 28th of adar to go as a shliyak as the emissary of the lanian government to try to find refuge the city of pontificial company the kids came to the train station the kids in his yeshiva kitana the kids in his orphanage came to see him off it was his last trip from punjabis they didn't know what they knew and the part of israel would repeat he said i gotta they all came to see me off and i was getting on the train one of the kids he was very attached to children one of the kids said rabbit mere mit take me with you and it became a chorus take us with you take us with you the world was collapsing he was collapsing and he was going to take them with him but he couldn't take it he said it wrong in his ears one of the big tasks of the pentapun of giraffe that he did was he created a homes for a child survivors of the holocaust the assignment orphans he did it already for the orphans of the first world war he did the nearest israel for the children survivors of the second world war it was a big issue big big conflicts maybe we'll touch upon slightly later that surrounded this but he was there out in front he dedicated himself to the building of tyra he was absolutely committed to jews he loved jews he loved the children he loved the children and the birthday of us you love the children the children who grew up today are you know great people they remember when the part of israel would go on his frequency of samaritan's israel he would come to them he would lean over them give them a kiss i'm going to be away for a couple of weeks say goodbye then to each of the children he was shiva ready he had hundreds of people but he knew his role he knew what he meant this was still early this was in 42 i think 43. he recovered from his illness and he uh they were what were known as what was known as what were known as the children of tehran but i mean the children of tehran so there were polish children there were hundreds 700 polish children who who escaped europe through trans siberia etc and they ended up in one of their staffs was in tehran and they came many of them came from their territories trail and they needed homes they were children without parents most of them and they they and they came there's israel so he created a home for them and he was busy preparing a home for them and shabbos he prepared they were supposed to come to him literally mate chavez he was going to get them from the transportation transit camps and he he had prepared and he didn't have linens he asked if he could give it russia in the main school in benebrach speaker everyone came and the fun of israel said the following russia he said you know we have a parashat of avid ivory of the hebrew slave the jewish slave the jewish slave uh in the beginning of precious mesquite and right after the torah is given it says he works for you six years the seventh year goes free but let's say he says i like it here i like it here so he doesn't want to leave so then there's a procedure for him staying longer it's good for him if you have a jewish slave he eats with you and he drinks with you if you're having prime rib he's having prime rib if you're having uh whatever it is a great wine he's having the great wine if you have a feather pillow he should have a feather pillow but if you only have one feather pillow he gets the feather you have only one nice mattress he gets the mattress asked upon a visual of i don't understand we have a rule in the torah and the torah says that even though you're supposed to love your fellow man like yourself your life comes first right the two people traveling in the desert your life comes first so if that's the case one bottle of water the your life comes first so so if that's the case why over here if you have one pillow why do you have to give it to the slave why is it different said the fun of israel of course your life comes first but the torah knows what this master would be like what's gonna happen there's a nice beautiful feather pillow and that night he's gonna go to sleep and he fluffs his pillow and he lies down and he's gonna stop for a second he's gonna say but one second what's he sleeping on only i should have a feather pillow he shouldn't have a feather when he's sleeping i sleep on some little a little piece of cloth it doesn't feel right then he tosses and turns he can't sleep he gets up and he knocks on him he gives him the feather pillow he says when the tyra says give it to him there says you have to take care of yourself first and you won't be able to manage you with a jewish heart you won't be able to manage if you know you have a pillow and he doesn't have to do it so you give it to him first that was what the carnival said he said he said rabbis today i'm going to be getting these orphans who are coming from the holocaust they have no parents they have no home and i have the privilege i i set up something for them you all know they're gonna have a home with us right and he'd never called it a bassy assignment he never called it an orphanage he called it bateavot the house of fathers because we have to be their fathers this is the home which we're creating for them as the parents of this community because i have rahmonas on you because i you know i got beds i don't have proper blankets i don't have proper pillows i know you're not going to be able to sleep tonight with your pillows and blankets you know if you know that these kids aren't going to be there they're going to be they're not going to have it right after shabbos people start coming and coming and coming and coming he had enough pillows and blankets for the eventual population of the bateau maybe they're still using them he moved people because of his passion that he couldn't rest you know the fun of israel was once giving it russia i've told the story to some of you before it's a horrible story and a wonderful story it's the tragedy is expressed in the story he was once giving this giving a rush i think it was in 1945. and in the middle of the russia he's he cried out it was his son's bar mitzvah that day his son and pony visually thought was still alive wasn't 1945. he thought he was still alive they'd been killed relatively quickly after he had set up the the the poured the foundations of the basement in thomas of of 1941 they were all slaughtered and he said today would be his bar mitzvah today is his bar mitzvah and he cried we went on in his russia and and and people came over to him afterwards and they wanted to comfort him and he said yeah i i have my child but there's so many other children he he refused to allow himself to get caught up in his own thing in his own issues his own things alone tells the story when he came to punish as a talmud to be examined be it to be for admission to the yeshua and he gotta hear from whomever and then he uh he uh he said that i want you to go to meet the ponyville he went to parliament he said [Music] he said what's your name he said my name is israel he said where are you from said be related to to the love of pietro cuff he said the punishment just took him in his arms he just hugged him remembered him they were both leaders in cloud israel together many times it wasn't just him every child was tucked in i want to mention you when we finish this guinness part of the program and i project hopefully it will work through the through the zoom two short films which are very beautifully done protest at lunch with a man named reuben falmouth and you wish a lion last trip towards israel not eight months ago seven eight months ago and he mentioned to me that he worked on a film about the punisher of so he sent sent to me and there's one and one film about the birthday of us about these this project of these orphanages or whatever we're going to call them he didn't like that term the care that he had for each person he cared for jewish lives mere mitt but my wine tells an incredible story beautiful story it might even be on that film i don't i don't remember that's the beautiful beautiful story uh the part of his rubs later years spent a lot of time in florida because there were a lot of jews who traveled to florida for many months and it was a place where he was able to work a lot for the yeshiva my wine was a rabbi in miami beach and and that's israel miami beach and he as a result developed a very close relationship with the bone of israel authorized said rabbi wine one day he said i want you to make from your parliament i want you to invite to your house all the young families in your show 20 years old and 40 years old i want all of them to come to your house for parliament so rabbi wine said the rove it's not worth it they're not the ones who have money you want the older people the young families they don't have any money one of israel said i'm asking you to make the meeting they said he never he was not a demanding person he never asked him to make a parlor meeting at all like what's going on so fine funny visual have asked him so he and his wife made a parlor meeting they prepared food all the young couples came from 20 to 40. got up to speak thereby wine introduced him told him who he was gave him a proper introduction of it gets up to speak he says one and a half million children were slaughtered in the holocaust they're one and a half million souls of those children are floating around in this world they're looking for a home you need you need to create the next generation of jews you need to have children he didn't ask them for a penny he asked them to have children to replenish the ranks of cloud israel i was israel everyone knows it everyone who met the pawn of israel that's why they get all misty-eyed that's what they remember the incredible love that he had for jews of every kind hillel zeidman was a writer involved in many many things from before the war during the war post the war belzyd remembers hearing the pun of israel speak before the war i remember how he spoke about that for you so we say as we say in shalom we don't just have just love to do kindness we have a love of kindness not a a mandate to do kindness but a love of kindness i mean it was so apparent his caring and his love of kindness he came by it honestly the fan of israel himself used to say that his mother his mother when they didn't have wayfarers poor people at the table his mother would say to herself on their breath i such a sad empty table nobody to share with such a sad empty table nobody to share with his grandmother would have travelers who would come traveling on the dirt roads of the of those towns and villages and they would prefer to go to sleep in the main room next to the furnace so they could warm their their cold bones they would fall asleep whatever time she would take their clothes that they think which were muddy and wet she would spend half the night washing the clothes and then setting them out to dry so they would have clean clothes for them in the morning these travelers pranav jarv considered it a big part of the lit bishop personality a disdain for selfishness a disdain for selfishness he wanted to to do for others there was a story that he told that he was very happy that he heard it from one of the litvaks that he knew in south africa who told him that his father woke him up in the middle of the night and said excuse me but could you give your bed there's a guest there's a travel that just came through and the person said to his father he says well what am i going to sleep on his father had his hammer and he was knocking up the hinge pin from the door of his bedroom and he took off the door and you lay it down he laid down on the ground so you guys so he could sleep on the door he would be sleeping on the floor he would sleep on the door he says really i should sleep on the door he says yes he says you know you're gonna have a bed tomorrow night and you had a bed last night this fellow was traveling to i don't know what he's left on last night i don't know what he's gonna sleep on tomorrow night the the pawn of israel loved that story he loved that story it spoke of the simplicity of hesed what made him have obviously sril the baby got it from his mother maybe got it from his grandmother maybe he got it because he was a little i have to tell you the amazing story that the fun of israel would say something which he attributed to it's a it's an astounding story with a spectacular post the stanley story is that the punisher of and you know i've told you as always when we do this in a fraction of the story of the khan of israel but he spent three years learning in radha by the time he was already an accomplished he had learned for years and tells after he left home to go to learn with a better mother when he was 10 years old he was bar mitzvah away from home he left him when he was 10 years old he entered tells very very young because he impressed who came to the town where he was to give a shirt and he was in tels for many years and then he went for a short period of time to the nevada yeshiva to the town of the verdict into the shiva maybe six months and then he went to lumber and when you picture the conversion of it it's not it's not like two peas in a pot right was a you know we have him as a very austere serious tablet was a personality that filled the room israel spent three years he considered his rebbe and whatever he did he always wanted to think what would the huff is you can come in wait here and he comes in and he sits and he waits in the in the simple room and he hears someone wailing crying like crazy and it's going on a little bit and he's sitting at a certain time you know responsible he goes over to the reversal and he says is everything okay and she says yeah you know that's the that's the the love that's the cough there's a woman in the community who's going through a difficult childbirth and her husband came they asked her how it's kind to them so he's dabbling said that when he heard that that this is dabbling like this for for a person he's waving and crying at that moment he decided that he's giving himself over to the side of time's gonna be his teacher and his mentor that's the best story that helps you understand where this empathy where this character's love and jews come from but the the spectacular postscript it almost almost not worth saying it because it takes away from the human miracle here is that that that the fun of israel said the story in the basement of the lower east side in manhattan when he was there once he spoke and he said the story and the fellow came over to him after the speech he said did that happen in 1908 and the front of zero said yes so that was me that was me he says i i know when i when i grew up i know like my parents told me that my mother had a very dangerous childbirth my father went to the sky during the childbirth and the time that him very hard and as a result i was born go figure at another time in the same area the punisher of david gave to russia and he told this story and someone else came over to him and this person was one of many many many hundreds of jews who were in this category jews who had come from europe who had a rich rich background and now we're in a very different context and we're very different now some of them were you know turned to resent loyola to hate the world of faith but some of them didn't they had good feelings that they would sometimes go to rekindle and this person wasn't from at this point in time who was an activist in the labor unions which were you know socialist hotbeds of you know many many jewish people who turned away from their faith but he heard that the part of israel was speaking there and he came and he listened and he came over to upon of israel afterwards and he said that he as a young man went to went to raven to learn a very young man and he came to radin and he didn't know where he was going he arrives by train in the middle of the night and he walks in the city and he sees a dim light coming from one house he knocks on the door and the person answered person answers the door says can i help you says yes i came here i came to try to find yeshiva the person said he went to sleep he says he remembers he went to sleep the person put him to sleep next to the stove gave me something to eat put him to sleep next to the stove and he remembers as he was sleeping the person took his coat and wrapped his feet his legs in his coat so he would be warm he came to the house light goes on in the middle of the night he was learning he says he says you know i've traveled a long way but my feet are still warm from from what the did for me to feel for others there's a story in the gomorrah how it sits alone the city that had so many that was teeming with a large population and now it's kalman now it's alone widowed right then it says cry she shall cry at night because sound travels much more at night revel said lila maisha himachina at night people more readily lament myself there was a story with a woman that lived in the neighborhood of rebel gambliel and she had a benti scheirs she had a young strapping son eleno he died and at night she would cry yourselves to sleep the neighbor heard her crying he remembered the destruction of the base amigdas and he wept with her at shannon until his eyelashes fell out he was so weeping so much they cry and they get others to cry along with to stimulate others to cry and there are those who hear that they're those who get it i'll tell you a beautiful thing from the big hearts on the fun of israel first visited eretz israel in 1935 he came to kevin ruffalo he was a client his name is kahanaman he was a kind and he had the abbasi soil of the cayenne ivor and he couldn't go inside but he stood outside and he said he stood there to daven and he heard inside a woman darling and she was crying mama mama mother mother as you can hear it have you heard it never heard it before he was very moved and he said now i understand the posit it doesn't say rahel she's crying it says which implies that she brings others to tears because you see people go back to the mamma rocco they go back to the mother and they're moved to tears she doesn't just cry she touches the emotions of others and gets others to cry but not everybody cries it needs the right heart to cry not everybody like leo would have taken the tears of this woman joined her in crying and cried over the base i think this cried over the fact that there's so much pain in the world because the world isn't right because the world isn't fixed but fun of jerome said i can't you can't put your head down on the pillow if the effort doesn't have a pillow how could you you won't be able to sleep have rahman is on you you won't be able to sleep that's an awesome israel that's a love of the jewish people that's care that's another libra if you guys made charlie he was completely completely enraptured with him i want to end with a thought i shared it with some of you before i think it's something which is essential for corbin advice and i think it's something which is essential for us now i made a conscious decision not to spend all of tisha bashbach speaking to you about coronavirus i think we we have our fill but a few moments to focus on what we're what we're going through is extremely extremely appropriate and important i want to share with you a ghazal that's in the gemara that says as follows that cries every day three times a day three times a day he cries over the fact that his children are in ghosts and the gomorrah says it says a story about the icy who entered one of the khurvais one of the abandoned buildings destroyed buildings of yerushalayim crying and the gomorrah says that elio navi came to him and said to him you know it's not only them but whenever jews get up in their bathing suits russia's in their shules and their battements and they answer hashem's name be blessed hashem shakes his head and he says ashrei fortunate is the one who is praised in his house in this way woe to the child who have to leave his father's house and woe to the father who had to send the child children away from the state when paulie still comes together in the show and we do what we're supposed to do we say that our biggest wish in the world is that hashem's name should be known and should be sanctified the name of hashem should be great the name of hashem should be uplifted in a world that he created according to his will be created with something in mind may it be living up to what it's mine may the name of hashem be blessed and we want it and we want it who says the stuff that the base of english is made of that's when hashem cries he says you know it's it's a blip i wish they were with me i wish they were around my table i that i have to send them away i for them that they have to be away that's what hashem remembers every time there's a glorious thing when we come together and we do something glorious to be mukade sheikh sharma woe to the father who had to send the ways doesn't have his children at his table well to the children who can't be at their father's day you know we're supposed to have empathy to each other i also have empathy for the revenge we speak about shaking who will bring joy to see on with its children hashem misses us as we miss him we get the metaphor now i think better than before families were not able to be together for a long time to some degree still a significant degree still you know i uh like many just separated i don't uh don't uh complain um at all at all at all at all but you know family members who will see each other will be together don't have it the same so for hashem i don't go to sleep alone in my house you know we have people there but there's separation there's tremendous separation tremendous anguish tremendous pain people who aren't able to be with each other people who are alone can we relate now a little bit more to the tsar of the shrine can we focus more on the tsar and the anguish of those people many many people who because of this pandemic and they left their parents table their prayer their children the parents don't have the children around their table the shrine cries how can we be comfortable i live in a palace made out of cedar wood and hashem's hashem's ark is in a tent in a temporary dwelling was sensitive he couldn't sleep at night because hashem didn't have a proper resting place in the world so we have the pun of his roof and we have we have the person who shouldn't be able to sleep at night because either their servant or the orphan from the from the holocaust doesn't have a pillow under their head we have the replenishment feels bad that his children aren't around this table there's so many people who don't have their children visiting them or with them their parents with them and the russian this is us there's one common denominator to all of this and that is to have a big heart and open eyes and realize that it's not just me and the way some english will be revealed when we have lofty thoughts about the pain of the shrine lofty mystical thoughts maybe i don't know i think david amelo thoughts were much more grounded i think the real ones which will rebuild the vase i think this is when people start thinking about what other people are going through there aren't lofty mystical thoughts they're just plain human sensitivity thoughts and hillel taught the person who came to convert i'll teach you the tire on one foot if you insist and what is it what you don't like don't do to somebody else asks rashi that takes care of the being right that takes care of the interpersonal mitchells what about the religious stuff what about the first muah what about the first tablet says rashi reach there's a possibility that says romansham is your best friend just treat the rebellion like you would treat a friend he's been a good friend it's been a pretty loyal friend to us for a while just treat him like you would treat a friend love of others with love of the jewish people the last paragraph of this kingdom which we just read said those words is and look at what it for those who ripped your oars and spread your nets sailors and mariners on mighty waters those arranged your arrangements and straightened straight in that which was twisted uncovered your secrets revealed your mysteries who will level the hills who will you down the mountains who will solve the puzzles who will repair the breaches the cry is a cry over the tamir the people who study torah who were lost and the great loss to torah tisha bug is also mourning over the loss of the tyrant we're going to say soon akina over the torah sha ali srifa a lament which was written you know ushered about the torah burned by the fire car clothes of sife tyra burnt by the fires the lack of the loss of the world of scholarship and what that brought back and of course going way back before and beyond the khurban of europe we think about the destruction of the basal migration the word of hashem is to come forth to us from yerushalayim the ramban writes in his introduction to parshas truma that the building of the mishkan was to create a permanent arsenal there should be a permanent tarsine our sinai was a place in the midst of the jewish people where hashem's presence came down with cloud and fire and where hashem communicated his word and that's what the mishkan would be it would be a place with hashem's cloud and his fire in the midst of the jewish people where hashem would come and speak eventually i proven between the two cherubic images moshe would go and get the word of hashem and while we didn't have that level of communication after mashraf but the hobbes amigdas there was a reason why the sanhedrin's seat why the supreme court seat was in the base amigurus there's a reason why certain halachas which are of the highest stakes can only be passed in when the sages were there in the sagas to be in the presence of hashem you're able to hear the words of his torah more clearly a prophecy all of torah fell and you know that we have a strange prohibition on tisha buff and what's that it's also to learn entirely it's forbidden to learn tyron other than tish above related materials you can't learn taiwan we have to feel the lack of everything aimless it's the holy city and its environment it's all destroyed its treasures are buried all we have left is the torah this was not the day to focus on what we have left it's the focus on what we're missing tell us something else they tell us that you can't study tyra on tish above because kule hashem isharam isam khailev it's mitsu bring joy to the heart torah is a joy producing enterprise the study of time so tisha baby not supposed to have that kind of joy so you can't study tyrant so let's talk a little bit about the other great love that the puna vijarav had yeah he loved israel he loved every every surgeon he loved the torah not just the institutions that he built he loved the torah he loved the torah he was my surname he in a certain sense to some that we may even have sacrificed partially that love to build those institutions i could just mention something that's almost like finish the thought from before you know what he used to say beautiful gorgeous gorgeous thing he said a jew yearns for mashiach you know why a jew yearns for moshiach why do we learn from us he says it's it's all over the gomorrah why we yearn for mashiach one word the gemara says in many different places what is it you know that word the gemara has a question no resolution to the question can't figure out what's that what's the result so what does it say take what does this mean simply it means okay stand you know stop the discussion let's go on for the next thing but everybody knows i remember it took me probably 20 years of learning tomorrow to learn that the simple meaning of taking was stop with the question and go on because when i was a hair yingle in fifth grade and i learned above matsia and there's a taiku right the first omelet in in gumara that typically a young child learns the beginning of the second paragraph there's a question of of kabayan the shema hamas which is the name for elio ammaville and will resolve for us all our outstanding questions so you ask the question they'll answer ellie all of you says said the fight of azeroth that's what we're waiting for to clarify the territories of those vitamins that's what we're waiting for we're waiting to know more about what hashem says he had such a love for tyra he had such a passionate love for tyra the panavis of now people like to say about people whose who are whatever this he's really was a guy island he really was a brilliant scholar just part of his love we don't have swarm from him there are a few volumes of swarm which collect things which he said four volumes of dive thin volumes which were published relatively recently and there are collections with his you know some of his speech kind of but he was a going and learning he was going and learning he he was he learned for three years by the time you know who russo was now you say oh they learn non-stop i've heard that before they learn non-stop well first of all you know you know there it's rare to find a picture of him not looking like the whole world was a very very very intensely serious person i mean it's a beautiful picture but but that's not the standard was married the part of iraq was single when they were there in robin one day they were learning telegram someone came in and handled a telegram he opened the telegram he read it he stood up he said the telegram informed him that his wife just had a baby boy she was in a different city he had come to writing to learn and she said the telegram to affirm that he had a son so he made a bracha and he went back to learn so i'm sorry i said that they learned non-stop i exaggerated he stops for the telegram he was a going island again he was a little kid he he entered tells he stole those people remember him considering who remembered him he was the he was the rock star he was the excuse national settings the brilliant brilliant tom hoffa and he spent years running around building how do you do it he was learning in chicago and it tells you she's in chicago in front of her a few boys were standing outside looking at a new safer that had come out and an old man with a white beard comes up to them you know whatever just goes washing his hands and he says he learned tiger he was in love with the torah he would travel the world he would come back to panavish 11 o'clock 12 o'clock at night the panama's basement rich was was was alive all hours and he would wouldn't stop going through these meadows see what the guys were learning start talking to them and learning whatever they were he loved the torah he would stop in the middle of a sheer and he would exclaim i breather we this is the tyre how sweet the title is you just exclaim hey lassa listen to his sweetness he gave us schmooze and yeshe was punivish he said tonight we're going to stay up and learn why do we stop and learn so we know what's the reason why we stay up on one shoeless night because on the morning of math and tyrant khali israel slept late who got there first said the point of of and this is like this is his whole mathias is in this word so beautiful it's his personality and his attitude and his passion he says how could it be he says only one way that that happened and that was because they didn't get the torah yet once they got the torah there's no way they would have slept late it's only because they didn't know what it was yet that they could i can't go to sleep that's delicious clever but expresses the passion again he came by honestly his father was a businessman in fact uh yeah his father was a businessman that uh as go helping finish negotiate a deal while conor mcgregor's america and the part of didn't like the way he negotiated the deal so he said he says i know how to negotiate because my father was a businessman he doesn't know how to negotiate his father's russian shoe so so his father was a businessman but listen to this businessman he has some copies even printed in a beautiful safe on the photoshop of the letters his father taught him the following thing the mishna says of that tyrant and twirling up there so what does that mean so simply what it says is where you understand it is you know if you want to have tyra you have to put away everything else that's what the rabbi writes a person who thinks that they're going to have tyra and will be pleasures they're not going to have the crowd they'll have some time but they're not going to have the crowd to have the crown of play you have to be single-minded but you delayed this is the way of tyra bread with salt water and measure sleeping on the ground bare necessities it those those aren't like luxuries those are like bare necessities bread water the ground to sleep on bear necessities toilet torah it's the same thing it's not an extra you have to view it as vital to life itself just like bread water sleep basically not sealy posturepedic that was what his father the businessman used to say on the first day hashem said let there be light on the fourth day he created the sun and the moon and the stars that provide life big complicated problem more to discuss this because i'll discuss it how did that happen so we know that one of the resolutions is that the title the likelihood was created on the first day wasn't this kind of life life was created on the first day was spiritual light what's that sometimes called the light that had to be eaten away or because i also call torah or the light that was in the torah after all the matter says that it says or five times on the first day of creation because it corresponds to the five books of the thyroid said the puna vijarov the world was created the first thing the world needed was tired it could wait till wednesday for the lights to go on the practical lights that get you to do things that can wait it can't wait the torah is needed right away a sense of the vital the first need of mankind what tyler does how tired shapes a person listen to this beautiful translation it's it's a translation it's not a word restore us our father to your torah bring us close our king to your worship you worship the king but the torah you'll learn from whom from your father because you look like your father when you learn torah you get to resemble the replenish how are your children to hashem because your biological children's lesson because he created you no that wouldn't be just the jewish people it's only the jewish people are called children because he taught us there many people ask the punisher of why he didn't writes for him he was brilliant and he said apostle says this is the book of the offspring of man he says my swarm are those kids i'm creating people paul creates for him i'll tell you i remember hearing that when i first came to baltimore mary israel the same story of rudimentary he wrote a brilliant brilliant safer never wrote another another safer never wrote another savior people asked him why did you stop writing score and he said i stopped writing score because i started creating talmudian bell writes for it the exponential production of swarm will be much greater upon said that his guiding principle what's going to be the greatest yield for clyde shamania for the honor of it's not about your learning it's about making sure that more tyra is learned that tyro grows bigger and better than before that's your task and so he fulfilled something else he fulfilled the mitzvah the eraser of the after hashem you should love hashem with all your heart and all your souls means your money because as the rishonim explained means a lot and when you ever say a lot it means something which you have intense feelings towards so it's basically what it's saying is with everything that's very dear to you for many people that's their possessions right whatever's near to you whatever is precious to you so give it up your life your argument your possessions said that it's his own son-in-law he said what's the most precious thing to you you're learning you have to be my sins you have to give up on your learning you have a yeshiva you have told me them to grow give up on you what's most precious to you and upon of israel he gave it up he did something which few people would be brave enough to do he stalked panyovich a by people learning them river and lake steinman of gershon edelstein i mean these were all employees he wasn't insecure oh he would come he would say yeshir but let him have the most the most the most he was a great darshan great teacher he brought in rav destler he heard about this person in england he brought him in to be the masjid to teach to teach a whole new way lifting up people through through tyra what would capture their hearts in that side competition what are you talking about the goal is to make tyra bigger tyra is this he the sweetness of tyre for him was everything one of his greatest projects was the archala the puna kala the panama's was a period of weeks in the summertime when people would come to ponevish to learn people who weren't tell me the yeshiva weren't even necessarily alumni of the of the issue that they would come to learn it still goes on to this day i believe i mean when i was once so in summer i think they still i was once at the bottom of your actually come the big event uh so many years ago i was there but i i assume it still goes on i don't know he loved it why because he says look all these people laborers they have a little vacation in the summer and what are they doing they're coming to learn you know what that says you know what that says about their love of tyre it was for him like the huge the greatest nagas in the world when he was in israel in 1935 he was walking in tel aviv his mother i mentioned he lived in tel aviv maybe the story wasn't telling me it's my note saying he comes to a show that's open and he walks in and there are 40 people sitting around laborers wearing the clothing of laborers and they're learning daffy me and the shirt and he's sitting with them he joins that they come in i want to just he just wanted to sit with them and learn and hear after he finished sitting with them he uh asked a few questions are they laborers they were for labor units but they're religious people unfortunately they didn't get favorite status in the labor union of the 40 of them four of them had work for tomorrow for the next day he was amazed and they came at night and they're sitting and learning they were sitting on the moon and he said and he was full of these brilliant things clips which is it was equipped from the office from the abarbanel right so many of you are familiar with that expression from the gemara has a question on a mishna something something seems off contradiction something is missing and this is the way you should learn which is like almost like an amendment to the text that barbanel commented on people who had nothing and they learned anyway he says they're missing so much and look how they learn and he said that about these people he gave him the greatest he said my son heard the same schmooze from his review because you know the rush lived in the most miserable times persecution that we entice has lived terrible terrible things that were going on they were the ones who had these discussions about slaughtering their children because they were being converted to christianity could you tell barley atheists just wrote about what's shocking is the more involvement see it what's shot in this contradiction between euvomas and conducion they have always going around all around them and all they were involved in was trying to understand the word of hashem god for the tyrant their whole world was the torah right that they forget their own anguish and they just engage in my journey a ton of israel was a frequent frequent speaker at the union just know it because so many of his tyrants are attributed to things he said at sea and what did he say to him listen to the delicious thing which he said how do you say yes many different things the simple thing is i turn back to you and you turn back to me i'm saying goodbye but i'm not saying goodbye i'm saying for whatever i'm taking leave i'm not saying goodbye he said he remembers that train ride where he went to the train station in funny of video and he was leaving and what a time it was and his family was there to say goodbye and his tommy were there to say goodbye hoping to see him again but being fearful and knowing that they might not see him again he says they turned around nah they didn't turn around the train left he was at the back of the station he was looking at them waiting for them and they until the train was out of sight they just kept their eye on it they couldn't look away he said that's what you say when you finish your book i turn to you you turn to me can't turn back on each other such a thing called loving tyra you know we started with her yakiva there's a famous gemara that says hashem hashem your god you should fear those who darshan s whenever it says s means to include something else but who should you fear besides god so shimano sunning sunni who had this theory that it was always to add something they gave up they said there's nothing you should fear other than god so we must be wrong a different place in gazelle it's not found it's not found anymore they ask a question so then what does it mean who should what does it mean besides russia who else and it says hashem the love of hashem what's with hashem you should have a love for the tyre it's a mitzvah of loving the tyre of a passion for the tyre hard to tell someone you have a mitzvah you have to love them there but when you come up against someone you come up to someone with this kind of a of a passion that's that's it the plan of israel was driven by a desire to rebuild calling israel to catch the letters the letters that had flown off to see a rebuilding of tyrant the jewish people tyrus precious he was completely completely enraptured with its sweetness that's why we can't go to thailand let's pause for a moment and think again about it the mitzvah you can't do on tish above there's no such thing as a mitzvah you can't do that it's the joy it's joy it's pure joy it's pure sweetness can you relate if you can't relate then maybe that's one of the tissue resolutions to make yourself relate how you make yourself feel right very simple excuse me for saying this i don't mean to sound preachy or condescending it's very it's very simple there's a formula for it it's explicit in the gamora it's the first plus i can tell it second possible fortune is the person who doesn't walk in the past of the wicked but in the torah of hashem's desire and the gomorrah says this teaches you that a person should learn where their heart desires don't there is a standard curriculum you have to learn things according to there's certain things that you have to know but you have to learn enot ella the icar of your learning is going to be are you interested the hare of noah hashem of kenya what did you say this morning every morning hashem make the torah sweet in our mouths and in the mouths of our children and in the mouths of all of the children of the jewish people you have to be sweet you're gonna force it to be sweet every single person every single one of us has an interest in an area of learning it's not necessarily the same what one person is interested in another person isn't what one person gets geshmach from get satisfaction from another person doesn't what you're interested in today is not what you were interested in yesterday and it's not what you're going to be interested in tomorrow but you have to learn with a haitian how could it be the torah tells you don't learn tishba it's it's it's too sweet [Music] we say that in riverside we say where else do we say by the way it's part of those craves hare of nashville and king russia makes sweet the words of the torah and the mountains of all our children we and our children and the pun of israel used to say it's the union you know grandfathers would be learning with their children with their grandchildren and they would say this fila we and our children and our children children we should continue to learn torah it says the black gumara the page of gomorrah's would be the plank for the bridge that united the generations and he would say this wistfully and hopefully and passionately that tyra would be restored to its place to bring together the jewish people to bring together the generations we spoke before about his love for children we spoke now about his love for tyra put those two together and it was it was uh it was off the charts you know you'll hear i think one of the stories which is told in the in the in the video about the point of visit love for children his love for seeing children but gershwin says the story is that foreign was also part of his staff in in ponyvish a young student from the office came and asked the question to him and the punisher just he was out of his kingdom he was so excited he went knocked on the door do you hear what he just asked me you already just asked me the love of jews the love of tyra the love of knowing that those two are supposed to be one of the same israel by rise of the coachella he drove him he drove him we drove him to to do what he did we should find for ourselves a sweetness a love of terror to be passionate be passionate about other jews to be passionate about tyra to see it build to see it grow i'm going to say the one king of charlie's which it's found it's found on page 81 it's number 41 page 81 8081 in the in the hana this again was akina by marami ruttenberg was who was the teacher of the rush there was the burning of the many particles of the gemara in this day and he he uh he he made this charlie suffolk just want to give you a sense of direction where we're going i just there's one more uh significant discussion here uh which we're going to be having now followed by the king of tsunami which we said already at the end of davening and uh and then just a few closing words before the kingdom for the holocaust and alien seal i also want to mention two things one which i mentioned before which is that following on the on this presentation we're going to try to stream on the same zoom those two uh films one 25 minutes and one fifteen minutes uh one about the point of visual and one about the project of the batease and you're welcome to see that we're obviously not having the usual afternoon programming here in the show that's i think you'll find it meaningful the other thing that i want to mention is that every tish above i also we try to do something for billionaires i encourage people to give something to some kind of a stoker some kind of a good cause and i think today it's a no-brainer that uh the cause that i would encourage would be the the the mice that's the institutions that the fun of israel gave his life for which is yeshiva and um it's it's easy to find the information to look it up there'll be something there and i'm happy also to share anybody who wants information about how to get it there i'm happy to help get it there if you want to give to the charity fund of the show to the tissue for fun it can go it will go there as well okay and i just would note again you'll you'll see that a lot of fun shiva today is again it's a huge huge place of tyrant harvard alerts you sweet okay so we've you've gotten a flavor for the point of visual but we wanna i wanna and the last major discussion about i'd like to talk about how he brought people together he spoke with a lot of people he talked about his love of time his commitment to build and ultimately the way he built was by figuring out how to bring people together getting people to learn the torah and getting people to support and to encourage that partner was a legendary fundraiser legendary and you look what he did built building after building yet in that time you know between the two world wars he built building after building and then came back in the nerdsy certainly built and he built any built he was a legendary fundraiser a famous funny story which people say which uh i think it sounds film also but it's a funny story people say which is that there was a there was a child in nebraska who swallowed a coin and they were trying to do that it was just having a hard time i'm trying to figure out what so the hazard is said bring him to the pan of israel he gets money out of everybody so so so uh so uh but he was he was he was he was he was he had the ability to attract friends but we have to understand what his goal was what his method was and you'll think that what i'm saying is trying to to make something hard or good whatever it is it's clear it's clear and you have to understand the person who does something like this so well he does it because he believes in it right you can't you can't get so many people to be enthused about the terror if you're not enthused about it you can't get people to be partners if you don't see them as partners and with the fun of jerov when he approached people and when he was trying to do and accomplish this with people his goal was something which you also learned from said people think that a person has to be very talented to be very successful when they go and they raise money on behalf of the achievement um or they have to be very unsuccessful when people have mercy on them and try to help them because the truth is it's from the replenished level this is what you to support torah should come through me i should be successful in helping them to create a relationship with the torah i should be a good shriek to do that really his goal clearly was to bring jews closer to the time there are some easy proofs of it he would do things very frequently that were not would not seem to be good for business for example in johannesburg in south africa where he would travel he would not speak about running he would speak like so you'd say okay that's also a good strategy you know don't speak about money and then people will know what it's about what it's about there are many famous clips from from um the fun of israel himself about that towards that but he spoke about things which would not win friends he spoke about shmear shabbos in places where there was mushroom shots and it was tough but he was so genuine and so loving that he just he won people over and when they came closer to tyra they came closer to turn they came they came very often all the way one thing by the way very interesting thing he had arguments with the rabbinations of that one argument which he had was that they were busy working on getting people to build my clothes and shoes he said forget the mcloys forget the schools make sure they invest in if the kids study torah then they'll be a future to the community if the kids aren't studying tour there won't be a future to the community now there are alohas about this but he conveyed it some listened some didn't listen but in the end the focus which he had on his children that he encouraged parents to school their children helped lead to the resurgence of the south african jewish community in a in a significant way a big big impact he had another difference of opinion when he arrived in south africa he discovered that they didn't there was nobody and he was a kind and he was very surprised why didn't they do bethesda why not and he found out that the the the rabbana decided because there is he's going to smoke a cigarette right and then he's going to get up and he's going to use the same mouth in front of his disagreed vehicle and he said a mummer there's a person who chooses to give up the faith you know just like that in our time the the troubles and tribulations and trials and the things which people have so again there's a very significant literature we don't consider them like and he says i will tell you exactly the opposite that you take that coin and you give him the chance and then later he picks up the cigarette he says i can't put that cigarette between the lips that just sit there you know it's it's a question it's sort of like the avacy soil equivalent of whether the cup is half empty or the cup is half full do you look at the problem and say therefore we can't have anything or do you look at the solution and say look what can grow from it mitzvah guerrero didn't like to get into brass tanks he wanted to lift people up he would say humorously he says you know i travel a lot and i see what people go through and lots of people have a hard time traveling he says this is the way it works for me taking off is great i have no problem landing is miserable my throat gets caught and everything i hate landing he says it's the same thing when i speak i like going and lifting people up and talking to them about big ideas to come back and to remember and say oh i have to ask the money for the yeshiva i hate that i can't stand it so they want to lift them up the tunnel of israel was the world's most legendary fundraiser also famous and everybody who has to raise funds uh in the rabbinic world hears this very very early in their career the pun of israel himself used to say that when he knocked down the door of somebody's house he would pray that the person wasn't home because you know just it was a hard thing but the way he he he did was he didn't do it he lifted people up and that was a big big uh big piece of his method i want to tell you a story a beautiful story he came to south africa and he heard about a man who was there it was a very wealthy person and a very philanthropic person however he refused to give money for anything he wouldn't give for torah he wouldn't give her religious things he gave money for lots of other good things you know for charity but he wouldn't give money for any holy crap and he was a little shady a jew came from lita but he had turned away so heard this he was very very sad he's very upset so he went to visit the person he says i have to heal this person from this crap he called him up he's going to have a meeting with you but he was smart he says i guarantee you i promise you i'm not meeting with you for money i just want to meet with you nothing about money first okay fine you can come so the pawn of israel comes to him and he says where are you from he says i'm from a small town of israel said you're from zhidik he says when i was a child there was a period of time when i studied in jibig right before he went to towson he was a little boy i told him when he was 10 years old he left home so one of the periods of time he's planned for example i remember the shoemaker who was such a special jewel every morning he was the earliest one to show and he was the becker right you know the legendary the town vector who would wake people up and say it's time to get up for daphne he would wake us up he didn't go through the streets but we studied in the yeshiva and he was there earliest saying to him and i remember his i remember the tune as how he said to him kill the shoemaker the shoemaker i remember him yeah i remember him i remember his wife your aunt people so good-hearted honest ah i still hear him saying to him ashrae gosh right we made there asheville the person who's talking to started crying he says it's 30 years that i haven't heard this too i haven't heard my uncle's tune for saying to him and the plan of jarov says ah now you remember the nephew of nakhon how could the nephew cannot be the first person to give to holy causes he said he says you're you're absolutely right and he gets his checkbook he's ready to give a donation and an appointment says i'm not taking it i told you i'm not coming for money i'm not thinking okay so illegal come back and it says i'm not taking money from you for from my issue one gift to another issue it's another issue i'm not taking money from my issue and the man started giving monetary sheets and the ending of the story the way the way it's written was that uh after he had given money to tells yeshua after he said that from now on he's very open to giving probably causes then eventually he accepted a donation for the foundation as well so what's the story it's clever yes he wanted to bring people back he wanted to bring people close and it's you know i tell the truth that those those will be the best fundraisers in the world they you know i remember hearing once from someone who gave that when i was in the kylo and preparing to go out into the world so we they had someone came this little program a very great fundraiser came and he said he said he said i don't get it you know like people aren't cured and people aren't fundraising i'm i'm fine i'm not just the only mitch from the tires for people to put on tillet if i i'm able to tell someone about the value of torah and i can get them to support torah that's not getting them to do a wonderful mission and it's again for some people it might be their defense mechanism to enable them to do the hard work of fundraising but even then it won't work it's this is the chance to bring people together and there's one thing which is very critical to know about the upon vision of and that was he was an incredibly unifying personality at a tremendously fractured time in a very fractured place when my mother should be well asked me who i was speaking about this fish above so i said i was speaking about the punishment of and she said ah i said you know him you know they overlapped my mother was a narcissist in the 40s and and part of the 50s and uh and she said i didn't know personally but i heard it many times the ponyville was that person who every part i've called you served loved and respected and when i was preparing for this i dug up you find the obituaries of the panavision of in the religious newspapers and the secular newspapers all with total admiration all withdrawal admiration everybody admired him and as i said to you before i skip over some of the more difficult stories that not to die to speak about so much on tisha brook but when the pawn of israel was campaigning to have those kids those holocaust orphans the alday tehran and others come to him to his institution it was it was there was a culture conf which was going on that energy show about those children there were those who wanted those children specifically to be brought up without religion it was a very strong counter movement to the you know to the shettle attitude you know jews who were from and people said you know look look how far that got us and we're gonna now be strong and there were major major conflicts about who would be able to raise these children what families were these children from would we be able to continue them and the fundamental was right there in the middle of it he was not just arguing he was building the institutions that could house them so i'll just tell you two anecdotes which are emblematic in a certain sense of the unique place that the fun of israel occupied us one was the following there was a fellow his name was kellerman i'm not mistaken josef kellerman joseph kellerman was involved in the aliyah in the youth aliyah which was the agency that brought kids over he was inert israel already and he was involved and that was uh an organization with which there was much tension and he was a kherutnik he was a jabotinsky revisionist and um he was a complete supporter of the punvish rov not that he sent people to his institution but the institutions all had to be inspected and when he came to the pune of israel he said it's going to be fine why was it going to be fine many times people found fault especially with these institutions they weren't teaching the curriculum that they wanted the kids to learn so they could be his productive citizens or whatever it was he didn't even look why because in europe when the pun of a giraffe was the reverend pony fish this killerman was part of a group that was trying to do work to save some jewish lives and um amongst their own and he heard that there's a jew in the father there's a the blood kind of a person who likes jews and they came to the pond of israel and they said they need money to redeem and to save jews they came from israel a long beard and so on and they came secular you know stride and secular revisionists and the fundamental said sure and he took out a check and he wrote he signed the check and hand it over to them and they looked at it and it was blank the amount was blank they said you know you didn't fill in me you forgot to go on the amount he said no how much do you need we don't know yet how much we'll need says this you write it for as much as you need i'll tell you this is the balance which i have an account don't go over the balance but it's all yours as much as you need and you'll let me know because that's what the problem is did for us strangers not religious who came because they care about jewish lives it's upon us israel to take care of these children they're fine there was a woman whose name was it wasn't her original name it was an israeli eyes name she was not with she was the wife of a man named was the first president of the state of israel he was not an observant jew and she wasn't either although she came from a hasidisha family she was a child of a sinister family but she became secular and she adopted the name who did why who was the inspiration for the name someone named alexander yana you've heard of him king jana who was a king from the house of the hashman who slaughtered israel he had certain you know governmental successes so to speak but he slaughtered and she named herself so to speak that did his name and she was very active in the uzelia part of his the building was dedicated i believe in 1953 and to the dedication ceremony of the building came the president of israel and his wife they were scheduled to come and many people in the neighborhood were quite upset this was the enemy right first of all they're not big fans of the state they weren't you know proto-zionists so to speak they weren't they were anxious and this lady was part of the group that they had been fighting you know this culture count for fighting over the children welcome them people went to the hazard and they complained leave it alone knows what he's doing how's an issue wouldn't wouldn't have done it but the giraffe was a magazine he was a uh a bridge builder he brought people together he helped grow tyranny and israel because of that ability and he had a vision he said the same torah that no one will be permanently pushed away from the jewish people if you believe in god and you believe in the torah then you believe that every jew ultimately has a connection and famously in the midst of all the courtuar comes in the midst of all of these arguments he said in a famous famous speech that he gave to this being said many times he said we have to start writing fill-in for the children of uh in harod and we have to start building schools for the children of nahallah those were the prototypical anti-religious kibbutzim it wouldn't allow right some of you have been with me somewhere we've spoken about the places which now hashem have shulls that right i met a woman there who was said when she had it when she had a baby they didn't let her have a wrist in the shoelace only have a doctor who could come to the house not a minion not a not nothing a young woman younger than me right now hashem things shift one of my one of the things that the last couple of years uh someone sends us a gift of honey for for uh for rosh hashanah and they send a specific jar of honey i i love it it's from inharao and it has the hashgraph of the badass the strictest israel it has on it i say look the prototypical theater was they're now making it with the badass now that doesn't mean they all only eat them but they wouldn't have let them in and you will tell me business is business but now they had a mata bakery a shmura monster bakery which people came out to and harold so people would see it you were able to do it he had confidence that every jew has a connection to tara and we're fighting now but ultimately there's going to be a resolution and he was going to contribute to the resolution in any way which he could ponder is famous until this day i believe it is true until this day that on young hearts the israeli flag flies from the top of the building of punishment and that's not typical that's not typical and he said they are our home they fight for us they defend us we're part of them they're part of us of course i'm going to show i'm going to show that that respect and get upset if people stood in the way and with all the complexity of how life has turned since then it's still there they still put it up that's still a part an expression of his uh of his of his legacy the ability to to have people come together to to connect to understand that it's all about and we're all about and we're all together to try to get to the same place to be able to have the world together unified around the torah this is uh this was his image and it was very connected to its history i mentioned to you before that he made a decision his own decision at the end to go there to throw instead of to go to america where it was originally being sent part of it was because he had heard from the family that the time was dying he lay for a day without saying anything and then he uh his family came and he asked them what's happening in the world it was and they reported him on hitler and salvation and if you look today at the building of the front of yeshua in big big letters on the front of the building it says santiago played by a crater he viewed the coming here it's israel not as a convenience not as a place where you could get papers we'd be able to do it he believed that it was the place where khalifa was going to come together and become holy holiness would grow and to do that jewish people have to be together and so he was everybody's friend he said of art this is such a vintage version of his love that it's worth bringing things this this factor close with him he says you say those should fall upon them fear and trepidation right and then afterwards we say shalom he says that's what happens people see you from a distance and they're scared of you you have to go over it people come and i walk in they see a man with a big black hat and a long white beard and a big black coat they're scared people are only scared from the distance if you come close it's resolved i've tried to share with you is the magic mixture of the love of tyra and the love of jews a passion that drove a person with every fiber of his being to strengthen the jewish people and to rebuild the tyre yes he had a dream to rebuild the 18 yeshivas of lita to bring over the people from paniolish his dream was to restore the jewish people to what we were supposed to be a pleita kaidos we're still here titus isn't and strength is to some degree because of a person who knew how to cry who is we're going to make this the wrap-up we'll go from here straight to say that the yearning of earth's israel for its children back and then we'll say the kinah on the holocaust of rabbi schwab i don't think it needs any more introduction and then we'll again we'll stand up to say hey which is the custom to sing for following us after eliza for those of you wish again we will we will screen the films i hope and pray that the um that the example of this person should inspire each and every one of us to mourn over what's missing to really really stop and think about what's missing what's missing and care for each other that's missing entirely what's missing in the basement it's missing the world which is not hospitable to a kurdish particle and do more to make it that way do more to care the more to live the values that this person exemplified this hashem this living what he exemplified i hope that something from that will come of this i hope that the houses like this one which were empty of the ishmael for months who didn't even get to be reminded of that good thing should soon be filled i mean aviation around this room and and we should enough we should be able to be the heart cnc at plato we should be able to go to the right sea and the disease should be finished the loneliness should be finished and the hashem which we live every day by a world which doesn't welcome his presence should be finished as a sasha okay so we'll say shall we page 6465. number three is [Music] yes [Music] my grandfather already in lithuania as a young man well well-known great torah scholar he was very involved with the public built all kinds of institutions in ponervege including hospital orphanage schools mushrooms came in an old age home to take care of what he had to as the rabbi of the town he became a member of the flaming parliament the same he went on a vacation for two weeks with a lithuanian textbook and came back two weeks later speaking the language poland september 1939 the german poll begins its ruthless march of conquest and sets the stage for world war ii he was in lithuania when world war ii started and he was sent as part of a delegation of the lithuanian government to the united states to take out the refugees who had run from poland to lithuania and the lithuanian government didn't want to keep them they were afraid and they were one of the delegations sent to the united states and the russians came in to lithuania so there was nothing to go for already he understood that what's going on after the germans had taken over poland that there will be no continuation of eastern europe jewry including lithuania and all the yeshivas would not be able to exist anymore over there and consequently he ended up abroad when the yeshiva bahrain that he had pioneered and he had developed the yeshiva in very important and impressive ways the yeshiva world that he had created was destroyed was annihilated [Music] he came to benibrak which was a stretch of arid sand he saw hill nestled in zurich said he will be a shiva he will be a couple he'll be another yeshiva people thought the man had lost his family in europe that was butchered he lost a thousand students murdered in his magnum opus his essay on the entire shot six cartons destroyed you can imagine that a man like that would be totally destroyed and full with agony and pain and sorrow and the people were with him and nodded their heads a little bit what can you do a man just live in a fantasy sure enough that that dream became bigger than any realities in el sis one the day of the groundstone there was expecting ronald to be ten days to come to israel so he had a minion of hidden there he would land his ground stone for probably shiva so somebody said to him well here me sugar you're going to build a yeshiva for 500 people it wasn't 500 yeshiva in the world he says you're going to build a issue for 500 in 10 days time rommel's in israel and you're going to build a yeshiva and he built his issues after building yeshiva when rama was 10 days away from his that was the ground stone from the yeshiva and somebody says to him build a yeshiva for five hundred yeah you're dreaming is i'm dreaming but i'm not sleeping he once said to someone said why why am i different than others a lot of people have dreams why do i make do my dreams come true because because most people dream at night so they turn over on the other side and by the time they wake up in the morning it's just a dream i dream by day and when i have a dream i immediately go into action and implement that dream who knows what we would have done without the fundamental of who knows how eric is royal how many swelling would have been had it not been for the funny victory of he believed that he had been spared in the holocaust there were a few great men who survived the holocaust and whose survival was interpreted by them with a sense of huge obligation you know he was a fighter he was he he said we're going to win and the later events are proven incorrect yeah well that's was his his purpose in life was to uh la hauser authorily to restore the crown of torah that's why he had this idea to rebuild those 18 yeshivo not just his yeshiva he rebuilt grud and other yeshivas and he had that dream that somehow everything that was destroyed would not be destroyed permanently [Music] i saw the rebirth of the jewish people in the land of israel as being being special that's why he said by heart ciontia plato he closed he quoted that known as the pulsing from the navy that the end the jewish people will be in pahartzeo and i mean that's where we're going to end up and that this was part of the process he took a very particular interest in reuniting jewish children with the jewish people in the aftermath of the shoah jewish children who were sheltered in convents and monasteries what did the ponovich grove do he went in late at night when the children were going to bed and he would sing shema surely he would therefore sometimes be able to prove that a kid was jewish by the fact that he covered his eyes when he said shema israel some kids would cry mama because they had almost forgotten this [Music] and slowly slowly kids start crawling and they remember things he said some more words maybe or something to to touch them and it was a geniuses and he saved a lot i don't know how many but he tried he didn't give up you know what i learned from a part of job that's what i learned from him never give up and see what's nefish don't worry about what they gonna say and how you're going to be appeared how you're gonna go to church and start getting jewish people out of there he had this he knew his mission once you know your mission you'll find the tricks how to to go about it that's what he thought is done meaning out of the land of poland there came a band of refugees a nomadic company now arrived at the trans-caucasian foothills after an exodus that started four years ago the fragment of a migration which has winded its laborious way through russia to persia he started working about the yeshiva and then all of a sudden that came the group which is known as yaldai tehran the children of tehran those were polish children who managed to run away to russia and from russia they came to tehran iran and from there they brought them territorial and he wanted them to grow up and they should grow up as they had been taught to be religious jews orthodox jews which didn't look like that's what's going to happen so he right away said he's going to take him and my father then asked him you know so busy making a yeshiva all of a sudden you're going off on another thing you're taking care of often children so he answered him this is all part of the yeshiva yeshiva has to go with it that's the best way to ensure that the yeshiva should develop and progress he went so far as speaking in the big shoal in benebrach one day he said we're getting in a whole bunch of kids tomorrow they don't even have pillows to sleep on i think it's more important that they should have their pillows than you and i don't see how it's possible that you can sleep on a pillow knowing that there's an orphan a few houses away from you who does not even have a pillow and they all came went home and brought their pillows he fought the government of the shuv to at least take some of the children of tehran palestinian jews at that point were committed to creating a new jew young and virile and and kibbutznik deeply jewish but thoroughly secularist and the last thing they wanted to create was a religious jew of the style of the ponovich now he had a unique role in israel as well because of all the litvak yeshivas and all of the litvak rabbanam he was more open to zionism than anyone else when he fought for the alday tehran they deeply respected him and therefore he was able to achieve a partial success with the children of tehran and over the course of the rob's lifetime he took in all difficult cases he personally saved three thousand children [Music] i knew the politician rob when i was a kid [Music] i was in his home when i had six years we arrived from romania in a november 49 with my father and mother and the sister from the ship they took us to a mabara a place where the government put also olim because they didn't have a house for them [Music] but the new state is unable to absorb its new citizens overnight and out in the desert thousands are forced to live in tent cities under conditions that are anything but tolerable so this is there was not a religious education in romania i studied in a haider [Music] rashi when i was five years old my father heard that in beneberach in polish there is a place where kids are studying the school they live there went to pani beach we arrived directly to the home of afghaniman my father told him rob he studied the header and we don't have a place to put him he said to my father look i want to take him but no we take only kids we don't have birds we came from the holocaust we don't have place my father told them rob this kid will study whatever we went back to uzimabara i didn't go to school my father worked and between minhamayre he studied with me something what he can suddenly enter afkanama what happened in united states they wrote in a newspaper fidish that mapai the government of israel closed a header that the paris opened in the mahabharata so it was not legal they closed it and this notice arrived tour of kanama rakaman said paraguay man we have to go and to help these parents to speak with them to motivate them and he enters and he saw me and my father and that kahneman begins to speak and he calls me hold me up and he said robo-tai the father of this king is a novi he wanted to put this kid in pattaya boat i said i don't have place and he told me this kid will be here i will took him directly from here to bateau i received a lot here you can pay it no way to pay all what you the save your life and save your life [Music] his goal in life was to spread torah there are two ways either through lectures or to build up institutions which spread terira by himself and giving lectures it's limited if he builds up institutions brings the biggest and best roshivas he could develop a lot more boys to grow up to be big tommy deja coming [Music] he looked for twitter and it's better for torah that he should be around an american south africa in europe south america to bring funds so that's what's needed [Music] he also told me that he felt that he could have been the leading talmudic scholar of the generation because he was a great scholar but he said i sacrificed a lot of my potential in order to build torah and aaron's soil in order to build the yeshiva so he said that you know that was the choice that i had and that's what i did and i found that to be uh very revealing was it true the matter was he was really a genius he was a genius in everything but in learning and torah i remember sometimes i i discussed with him torah and i told him in an instant the flash of genius it was remarkable just remarkable everyone referred to him the going of ponybeash nobody referred to him as a going in fundraising his talent was connecting to union igniting them when he walked to a big congregation somewhere and he saw the faces that have no excitement whatsoever and he left everyone ripping me and crying with tears [Music] the story that i remember most vividly is that he came to me one day to rov and he said i should make a meeting in my house and i should invite everybody in the school under 40. so i told them rebbe there's no use in fighting them they don't have the money i thought he was trying to raise money so he said to me he said you do what i say so i was taken aback you know usually that isn't the way he spoke to me so he had about couples that came some were in their late 20s most were in their 30s and i introduced the rov and i said what an honor it is that we have him in our home and everything and he wants to speak to you he'll speak to you in yiddish if you don't understand i will translate for you later but i said when the robe speaks even if you don't understand yiddish you'll understand what he wants he speaks from the heart to the heart you'll get it he said there are a million and a half jewish souls of children under the age of 12 who were destroyed in the holocaust he said these souls are circulating in the ether they're looking for a body [Music] you have to give him the body and he sat down well i never was at a parliament meeting like that in my life and that year about 12 15 babies were born in the congregation when i saw him the next winter when he came he said how many muscle tubes do i get i don't know people who had such a vision such a view of the world who had such a loyalty to the jewish people loyalty to the future of the jewish people [Music] [Laughter] there was a little boy in benebrach who swallowed a coin and they couldn't get it out and they rushed the big child was beginning to turn blue and they rushed out the child they brought the childhood and you know to try to get the coin out what should he do and he said get the ponyviture off he'll be able to take money from anywhere and everybody started laughing and the coin popped out the child saw the parents are laughing and he gave a quarterfinal and come there was a committee came from los angeles there's a lot to do with the problem which i've done a lot to do is los angeles buildings in polish they somebody came from los angeles not from jew and he says i'll build you one of these places in the bottle there's a school in the body of us on one condition nobody would pay us nobody should go with any payers don't do what you get no children the deal is done able to go to school there was never a fundraiser in my knowledge that it was equal and it was not direct fundraising it was complete indirect fundraising he would become friends with the man the man would tell him his problems and he would give him advice and he that was his attitude he would say to me in the morning when we start out he said with whom are we going to do a favor today who are we going to help today because he wasn't the one that was given the favor the favor wasn't to him or the ponervish the favor was to the person that the person was going to have a share in eternity he sold it that way he was always building he then he was building an ashdod he was willing to yeshiva rodney he had that dream of rebuilding 18 years yeshivas that were destroyed in lithuania in my wisdom i said to him maybe you know maybe it's enough you know because i knew the burdens on him you get calls every day from israel creditors banks the yeshiva you know it was it was more than a human being good bear so he would say like this as long as i'm alive i'm building the later generations will have the problem of paying for it meanwhile i'm building the point of job figuring out a way how to raise money for ponovich posthumously the way he did this was he bought a large plot of land to be used as a cemetery he was actually buried front the center realized that these braden center people want to be buried around him so therefore it means even more money going and the proceeds that these plots went to the panama to shiva he called it sivae ponovich and that was just a brilliant way to figure out even posthumously how to raise funds for ponovich and he was very very adamant and looking for ways to make sure that yeshiva would be able to keep on going even after he was passed away and one of the things was that he said i want to be buried there so people will also want to be buried near me and so i will be able to help the yeshiva after my life also the part of israel had such charisma that people just followed what he wanted my parents wanted to be buried in the cemetery bonus and my parents wanted it and my brothers wanted it he had such charisma and [Music] my my father was very very proud that my mother's kevia was so close to the bottom of sheroff's giver he was so close to rafa ghanaman they just felt they wanted to be near him and the rest of the family followed suit [Music] nobody who was alive that will forget that levia of the ponyville which was all the streets of neighborhood were closed locked black the whole world came to that levia everyone cried everyone kids i cried the loss was unbelievable thinking about all that he accomplished one person what we would have called a broken person after the war after losing so much to be able to reinvigorate and renew energy trial and eventually it's all over the world of his dedication to torah and his avas israel that inspires us to try to emulate you know some some of the greatness of the punishment what we can do to honor his memory is strengthen his yeshiva strengthen all of the institutions of torah and eretz israel and wherever they exist be of good faith try to avoid needless disputes and pettiness and to be jewish that's you know how do we honor anybody's memory you know in judaism the other people's memory by being jewish in the full sense of the word and the commitment to it and that's my goal now it's already 50 years since he left the world but he really didn't leave the world whatever he did is still alive and growing hashem those who at the time thought he was dreaming yeah he was dreaming but the dreams have been more than fulfilled he never until his last days he did not rest we can do more we do more we go again and again with another yeshiva another institution another school you can always do and the bonus on is there what you can't do he'll do but start push do something show away [Music] but their vote was started by my grandfather about 75 years ago in the middle of the second world war when the first refugees children arrived from europe to israel when the rov began the yeshiva there were lots of kids that came after the holocaust and they they didn't have parents or they had parents who couldn't feed them they didn't know alef base they didn't know homage they didn't know rashid they didn't know gomorrah they had nothing they didn't have a roof for their heads then he decided that clarisol needs for these kids an institution and he built these battery aboard for these children to be able to become not only become tummy they want to to become jews to become eden to know that they are jews [Music] ever instead of being a orphanage he called it battery above the homes of the parents we shall be parents to these children who have no other parents [Music] and it's been going since then but they're always those who are in need of the special homes various immigrants from all kinds of other countries from all over the whole middle east we are open for all children of any type who want to become good jews and good human beings [Music] deuteros isn't just a dormitory [Music] it's a home [Music] a home takes care not only of the food [Music] not only of clothing each kid is corner kid each knows he gets up in the morning he comes to his corner here you see he has his underwears titties his shirt his towel he knows he has his corner he comes he takes it like a dome i don't think it only has such a nice corner even buying film making a bar mitzvah party [Music] taking care that whoever needs special teachers we'll have them we give them special courses take them out for trips we take them out to summer camps this is all part of the battery about curriculum we have books we give them books we buy for them and we teach them but not only the abcs of judaism they all learn gemora at the end so that they can beat tambien if they want they prepare us how to learn torah how to do things how things work in the torah so when we get out from this school when we go to the shivas we will not struggle with those anymore they're training us so that we could be able to become like a big wow or like that time like that so that we could be the fathers of people who are trying to learn torah [Music] we have many boys and girls coming from houses fathers in jail the parents are incompatible and have to be taken care of they have to have a real home a loving home a home that cares for them those are the kind of children that we have of course children who were brought up in such a home and we have to fix them up put them on the straight path give them a sense of feeling good about themselves which they don't have when they come here it's a little bit difficult to teach those children because you need to give them the place you need to give them the the warm the heart you need to give them all your life more than teaching teaching is teaching but you need to give them a love warm you need to give them how to learn they don't know how to learn m [Music] now [Music] we've had many rabbis officiating today who've gone through bateas teachers heads of departments of education we even have a rabbi david levy was a rosh yeshiva in ponovich who always tells me if not for bateavat i would be some kind of a kibbutz nick today and he got up to be one of the greatest yeshivas in today's generation of [Music] foreign many of those who graduate from the batea vote from the earth eighth grade they go to yoshi was katanas but we have found that being that they come from such backgrounds it's very hard for them to integrate with irregular children and it was decided and with the broker and was told by a girlfriend edelstein and kanyevsky that this is the way we should open a yeshiva katana for them and be able to integrate together with other children in a higher level three years later just opened this now two months ago and mo hashem it's running very good it's also very expensive of course that's not going to be an obstacle when it's needed for jewish children [Music] for three years and now i am in yeshivactana and i learn igmara and i love this [Music] the girls also have their curriculums they all learn sewing they're taken care of they get a dowry for their weddings and even after they get married and they leave the boys and the girls they continue to be part of the botti office they come from time to time they're called up on from time to time to check that everything is okay what do you need etc etc like a parent we're talking about several hundred children like these there's demand for more we don't have more space the girls building is completely packed all taken care of in many ways whatever a boy and a girl needs person we have an obligation we have to take care as a jewish child who needs help who needs upbringing we have the satisfaction of seeing children the way they come in to us and the way they come out good nice jews intelligent people [Music] part of the mainstream of jewish life there's an obligation on every jew to take care of every jew everyone in his way that he can not bringing these children we see what comes out of them hashem and that obligates us to continue on our successful mission please be part of this success and be part of the great work that we are doing thank you bateau because the rabbis and everything and the kids are good people and the learning is great thank you versailles for everything for the meals for the programs for the lunch for the for being here for everything [Music] you
