9 Days, 9 Thoughts: Day 1
214 views
“Tisha B’Av is a day of mourning, a day of destruction. But the antithesis is also possible as well. And that’s what we’re aiming for.” Kicking off our 9 Days, 9 Thoughts series—featuring nine personal reflections from OU educators and leaders across our programs leading up to Tisha B’Av—Rabbi Andrew Israeli, Assistant Director of NCSY Kollel, reflects on how, even during the Nine Days, there’s room to build. Through growth, connection, and purpose, we begin to reverse the very destruction we’re mourning.

The word that is most often associated with
Tisha B'Av is the word "destruction," in Hebrew,
the word "churban." To think about something
that once was that no longer is. However,
as we spend our summers here on NCSY summer
programs, we think about the antithesis of
what that destruction is and what that destruction
represents. Our goal here this summer is to build.
Our goal here this summer is to grow. Our goal
here this summer is to facilitate and experience
for our NCSY'ers and for our teams, that's going
to give them the tools to build themselves,
to build their communities, to build Torah,
to build Eretz Yisrael, and to become the best
versions of themselves that they can possibly
be under our auspices. Tisha B'Av is a day of
mourning, a day of destruction for sure, but
the antithesis is also possible as well. And
that's what we're aiming for. That's what we're
trying to accomplish. And when we think about
what we have the power and capability
to build, nothing is out of our reach.
