Why Did an Amish Christian Community Start Keeping Shabbat and Supporting Israel?
What would make an Amish Christian community rethink everything they believed about the Bible, Shabbat, and Israel? When Rabbi Jeremy Gimpel visited an Amish community in America, he discovered an extraordinary transformation that began with one simple question: What does the Bible actually say? What happened next led them to embrace Shabbat and develop a deep love for Israel and the Jewish people. I was traveling in America and I was
invited by an Amish Christian community
to speak to them. And I'm like, Amish?
Definitely going. And I'm like, Amish
people, that's crazy. Why would they
want a rabbi from Israel to go and speak
to their church, come into this place in
the middle of nowhere? And all of a
sudden, all the men have beards, a
zillion kids. I'm like, wow, Amish
people, this is so fun. As I look
outside, there are cars in the parking
lot. You don't know what's going on
here. What's happening here? And then
they're like, well,
2 and 1/2 years ago, we were all in
horses and buggies.
And now,
we drive cars. We were full-on Amish,
and now we asked ourselves a question.
It doesn't say to not use electricity in
the Bible. Why are we using electricity?
They also started keeping Shabbat.
Because like, why are we doing the
Sabbath on Sunday? Shabbat is in the Ten
Commandments on Saturday. They started
honoring Shabbat. Then they started
reading the Bible, and they're like, how
could we be against Israel? The entire
Bible is in support of Israel and the
Jewish people. We love Israel
