Okay, good evening everyone. So today
was Gimel Iyar.
Gimel Iyar is the yahrzeit of Rebbi
Carlebach.
His name was Rebbi Carlebach. So
I want to thank Yossi Badner who told me
to uh
to uh bring to my attention the Indian
of uh today.
And I'll tell you the truth, I'm not an
expert in the life of Rebbi
Carlebach.
But one thing you can't help but observe
that uh when I was accounting, anybody
ever heard of him?
And uh now
you know, there's a major pilgrimage to
I think that they said that today there
were 20,000 Jews who went there.
So you have to, you know,
you can't help but notice, you know, my
hi. What is this big attraction to his
cover?
Um so so I went to the store today. They
have different biographies. They have
the English, they have the Hebrew.
Wasn't sure which one to get. I
realized, you know, that if the English
is a translation of Hebrew, the juicy
stuff's going to be in the in the real
one. Okay, anyway, I'll tell you a few
things. This is not a bi- uh
biographical share.
I want to just just share with you one
thought about
why all of a sudden everyone's attracted
to this particular cover. So the first
thing one to know, you know, I called a
few people. What could you tell me a
divrei Torah from Rebbi
Carlebach?
And uh you know, I don't have any
particular ones to share with you.
In fact, he was master of his knowledge
of Torah. He hid very much his knowledge
of Torah.
Um
but it it brings over here
that after he finished, he was known
primarily for his kashrut. His kashrut
is uh was considered astounding. First
of all, his hallmark he made him a
Malave Malka every Motzei Shabbos. And
he that he all the preparations were
done Motzei Shabbos. No left There was
no leftovers at the Malave Malka. He had
chickens slaughtered. And if there
weren't uh enough chickens, they would
slaughter the hamas. It was
His wife went all out and they had, I
don't know, hundreds of people at at
these sudas. And besides that, his house
was open like the house of Avraham
Avinu. That's what he was known for.
That's what his specialty was. That's
what he was mefursem in the mida of
kashrut. In Torah, he was not mefursem
in Torah.
But uh certainly he was a tremendous
talmid chacham. He brings over here that
he did not sleep at night.
Um
It says over here the way he would he
would stay up all night. He would have
There was a certain ger.
To find the story, there was a ger from
the city of Carlebach. I don't know, you
know, that's an interesting phenomenon
in and of itself, who was appointed to
fill up a basin of cold water. And Rebbi
would put his feet in it and stay
up. And then when the water turned
lukewarm, this ger had to change the
water and put in So he would stay up all
night. It brings over here
that um
he did not sleep more than 2 hours a
night.
Okay.
A brief resume, some people tried to
sneak into his room at night. He would
bring into
He had an ordering of sefarim which was
dedicated to uh his sefarim. And then
when he finished all of his kashrut and
for the day, he would bring into his
room. It says over here primarily Shas
and Shulchan Aruch. But nobody knew
exactly, you know, what he was learning.
He He was master of that from people.
But it says over here that some people
tried to sneak into the room and listen.
And whenever they would listen into the
room,
mysteriously there were always two
voices.
There were always two voices.
Him and the Shekinah, somehow. There
were always two voices emanating from
the room.
Anyway, in his shul he hired a maggid
shiur. So he would he would teach
Mishnayos be mincha and maariv. And
Rebbi would sit off to the side.
And you know, if you're not giving
shiur, so sometimes it would look like
he was dozing off.
So uh one time the maggid shiur had a
stern question in Maseches Keilim.
So Rebbi realized, "Nu, what
what's going on? What what what what's
the difficulty?"
And immediately he knew he, you know, he
was able to answer right away in a very
difficult Mishna in Maseches Keilim.
Okay, there are different stories that
are brought down that he taco was um
a tremendous yadan in kol Torah kulah.
Brief resume, that is not what he was
known for. He was known for his
incredible uh midas hakashrut.
Um I'll read to you first what it says
on his cover.
So it says over here in this holy book.
He has a copy of his
cover.
Where did it go?
Now that this is your story.
One second.
What?
No, so they have a good edition over
here.
Sorry. One second.
Um
So Rebbi
What?
No, it's in the back.
Sorry.
Yeah, this is one of This is This is a
picture of some of the So it says like
this.
Yachid bedoro v'tzaddik yesod olam
v'yashar
v'yashrus darcho tzedek v'chesed.
He was the one in the generation in his
righteousness and his uh manner of
tzedakah. Shomer v'oseh chesed v'chesed
v'chesed v'tzedakah
He preserved kindness. There's no way to
measure his sanctity and his chasidus.
Omed b'gmilus chasadim tzaddik yesod
olam mefursem midas tov v'chesed. He was
well known in his kindness and his
uh as a beneficiary to so many people
and his humility.
He was a tremendous master of tefillah
and many were saved through his
tefillah. He clothed the naked. He
married off yesomim. His house was open
like the house of Avraham Avinu. And
even even so, even though he fed so many
thousands of people, his own household
members were aniyim.
Tens of thousands of people flocked him
from all over the world. And he
never got angry in his life.
He served the Emunah his Rebbi. His
Rebbi was uh Rebbi Kahana of Liska.
Many tzaddikim and many gedolim would
come uh to visit him. His mezakeh the
rabbin with Emunah v'bitachon that he
implanted in them.
Even all the tzaddikim of the dor
proclaimed that he in fact is uh a
kadosh.
And uh it says interesting, of all the
things that he did, it says lechem rav
avad l'sudas David hamelach al shulchan
avosam v'nisochim. He had very
extravagant Malave Malkas.
And his kedusha was b'hatzne'a laleches.
And he covered himself over even in his
davening.
You know, people would come to observe
his davening and they they expected to
see somebody davening shaking, you know,
moving the whole
He was very calm.
Where people were taken aback, you know,
this is this is
And um in fact, the story goes, this
story I saw.
His wife served the guest cholent.
And the cholent didn't look hot. And
then when he Ah, it was very
And when he burned, Rebbi says,
"Cholent is like tefillah.
You can't tell how hot it is. When you
get close, you see how hot it is." So
Any event. So what's the pshat all of a
sudden in the in the end of days, you
know, right before Mashiach comes,
everybody's coming to the cover of this
tzaddik who was not known for his
godliness in Torah.
He was known more for his godliness in
kashrut.
Interesting thing, I once saw a comment
of the Kotzker.
It's brought in the sefer L'vush Kodesh.
In the end of days, before Mashiach
comes,
there'll be very few people who learn
Torah properly.
Very few people who daven properly.
There'll be a little but there'll be a
lot of baalei tzedakah.
So it could be as part of And and uh the
Kotzker says in fact, the geulah will be
will come in this chosam tzedakah.
Like it says, Tzion b'mishpat tipadeh
v'shaveha b'tzedakah.
So in the end of days, when, you know,
Klal Yisrael needs more than anything
this chosam tzedakah. After all, that's
what the Kotzker says. The observation
is the the other two amudim will be very
weak.
So maybe that is why somehow, you know,
if we don't understand, but the the
mazel of Klal Yisrael is to flock to
this zechus, the zechus of tzedakah
v'chesed, which is will be the most
prominent zechus at the end of days.
But then I saw a Gra. Very interesting
Gra.
Phenomenal Gra.
By the way,
Rebbi Elimelech of Lizhensk says, the
Sfas Emes quotes it,
that until the Arizal, the world stood
on Torah.
And from the Arizal on, the world stands
on kashrut.
Well, I said, "That's not niskaabel in
Olam Haba Yishuv, you know, the Olam
Haba Yishuv is the time of Torah
connected kulam, from the time the Torah
was given on Har Sinai until the, you
know, until the end of time."
There's an incredible Gra.
And the Gra also may may give us insight
into this phenomenon, this flocking to,
you know, Rebbi was known as the
godol in tzedakah v'chesed. So I forgot,
Aussie, you said your uh
His wife's family was helped with the
build up the makom over there. They're
from Carlebach. From Carlebach.
You can see him after the shiur.
Yeah. So in the
There's an Avos U'vanim. Let me tell you
the Avos U'vanim. I'm not going to tell
you the Gra. So it says like this. We
know one of the three pillars of the
world is gmilus chasadim. It says in
Hoshea, ki chesed chafatzti v'lo zevach.
The world was created with for chesed.
Ki amarti olam chesed yibaneh. Then the
Avos U'vanim says a story. One time
Rebbi Yochonon ben was leaving
the issue is following after him and
they SEE THE SAY
THE
WAY THEY
ARE IN THE sky it's gone. What are we
going to do?
Don't sweat it. We still have another
what is it
like it says
the
other one.
We find that was
also said.
So it's always bothered on this lesson
like this.
If you look at
this
if a person wants they should do two
Tyra and
like it says the
with and Tyra you'll be a tone. So why
when they pass by the
does
say don't worry. We still have a son.
He should have said don't worry. I know
we don't have a void we had and Tyra.
What about Tyra? Why do we
say don't worry we still have
no but the other one.
Says the other one and
the other one and the other one and the
other one and the other one and the
other one.
But after the was destroyed says the
first
we don't have a void of course we don't
have a void.
And we don't have Tyra either.
How's that?
The other one says
no
other one
there's no Tyra.
Once we went into we have no more Tyra.
What do you mean we have no Tyra? Look
at the shelf sure looks like there's a
lot of Tyra.
It says in
there used to be 600
of
the other one.
Look at the other one only only have the
other one. What happened to the other
596?
94?
They're gone.
The other one the other one the other
one the other one the other one the
other one the other one the other one
the other one.
So there's no other one
there's no Tyra. The only
that we have left is what?
That's
what it says the
when the destroyed and they cried
don't sweat it cuz we still have what
about Tyra? We don't have Tyra.
I but we learn Tyra. What are we
learning then?
I think the other one like this. This is
a different way of saying it without
saying like
you know there's a tradition of
that the world stands on from the time
of that result. Okay, that's your
tradition.
And the other one in the end of days
there will be the other one
but not really the other one the other
one the other one but I think there's
another way to say it. This is the the
way the other one would say it. Say like
this. The other one the other one we
have Tyra and when we learn Tyra it's
the biggest
in other words what's the bigger Tyra or
the other one Tyra is the biggest the
other one is bigger than the other one
the other one if a person is learning
and they could do instead of course you
have to learn unless it's the other one
the other one the other one the other
one the other one never changed. And
who's greater a great the other one or a
great
of course the great
one is is greater. The other one writes
when the other one the other one the
other one the other one the other one
the other one the other one the other
one the other one the other one the
other one.
Right it says fear God and who else?
So says the other one the other one was
trying to determine who else in this
world is most similar to the other one.
Could have said about me the other one
the other one the other one the other
one the other one the other one the
other one said the other one the other
one the other one the other one the
other one the other one the other one
the other one the other one the other
one the other one the other one the
other one the other one the other one
the other one the other one the other
one the other one.
But it's like this.
It's like this.
If you wanted to know there's three that
the world stands on.
There's only one
upon which the world stands
that has not been diminished with the
other one the other one the other one
the other one. And what is that? The
other one.
Tyra is mostly diminished. The other one
the other one when we we have whatever
we have of Tyra is real Tyra and if you
learn it's the biggest the other one
but still there in one sense the other
one is greater than Tyra not overall but
in that it's the one
that never was downgraded with the other
one the other one the other one with the
other one the other one Tyra most of it
was downgraded most of
The other one is in its pure form and
therefore maybe that's why the other one
the other one will come because it's the
one
that stands as sturdy as
as what the way it stood when the other
one the other one stood.
But be that as it may here we are at the
end of days and we see this phenomenon
of
flocking to the of this that means
embracing the other one and the other
one of the other one. And even if we
were not to go there but certainly we
should learn from his holy ways of
devotion to other especially the other
one. That you know the
other one the biggest you could do in a
way is the other one.
Why?
Bigger he says than um
than in lending money bigger than
clothing somebody. He says because why
do we do that to emulate him?
The most pure way to emulate him the
closest way to emulate him is the other
one. Why?
Cuz what does him do?
He brings us into his home that's this
world. He gives us to eat he gives us to
drink. In other words if you would sum
up what is the of
is the other one.
So right cuz brings us into his home and
he gives us all of our needs. So when a
person does
which was
the other one
characteristic so we hope that the of
this is making for all of
and we should learn from his the other
one
