During the Battle of Imphal, Jemader Abdul Hafiz, of the 3rd Battalion of the 9th Jat Regiment of the Indian Army, led an attack on a Japanese position on Nunshigum Ridge. He took several positions by himself and even grabbed a Japanese machine gun barrel with his bare hands so the attack could continue. After the Japanese troops are pushed off the hill, Hafiz is mortally wounded. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions.
