The helicopters arrive at their
destination at 12:40 a.m. local time and
begin hovering above the compound when
disaster strikes.
The assembled audience in the small
White House conference room watched in
horror as after coming to hover near the
wall of the compound, one of the two
Black Hawks begins to rapidly lose
altitude. I would not want to know what
the blood pressure is of the president
when that incident occurs because that's
exactly what happened during Operation
Eagle Claw when Carter was president and
that's what doomed the mission is the
helicopters crashing and service members
dying.
