to hurt his innocent wife because she was very innocent he had a desire to have meaningful human connections he had a desire to see himself as a giving person and other values and they all made him decide to stay with the family he did have to move far away from his community and completely change his style of yiddishe kite which was not working for him in this scenario his initial conflict was between obedience responsibility versus self-actualization one voice in him said become your own person half fun do what you want to do another voice in him said you got to be home at six o'clock and do homework and prepared Vaart area for Shabbos everyone he spoke to before he came to therapy his row of his rabbi his wife himself they all framed the conflict as a choice between two mutually exclusive options one option is self-expression one option is obedience and self-abnegation by asking him what was holding him back instead of harping on his responsibility he was able to notice that there was something holding him back that had nothing to do with obedience and that on a deeper level his self-actualization lay in letting go of his dream to run away from his family with a motorcycle and in being obedient and responsible to his own inner values so his whole life everybody forced on him a split the split was will you either be you why are you going to sell your soul to the community to the religion to the family to the God to the rabbis to the huh students whatever to the issue whatever it is his whole life and he was sick and tired of it when am I gonna become me I understood this and therefore the therapist says I stopped talking about that I wanted to know what's holding him back like why aren't you at peace with this decision is it all because were frightened of society or maybe there are voices in you that you need to become familiar with and he basically realized that there was something beyond obedience to outer forces there was a voice of obedience to himself but not to his outer self to his inner self I find in my experience that people come into therapy like this all the time and when you ask them what their deepest desires are they look at you like you're from Mars nobody addresses with people their deeper desires what are their deepest values what are their deepest priorities what do they really care about but these values and deepest desires are probably the most practical and concrete connection that we have to ourselves to our own truth in the world of my shovin on a practical level we're not teaching people and to explore what's really important to them what they really value some people even feel that it's Fira it's heresy to entertain such thoughts imagine if our education system help people explore their true values
