all right here we are at manhattan day
school in new york city it's time
for the 2014 edition of who could build
the best manishevits hanukkah house
we're at mds i want to thank everybody
here for welcoming us here today my name
is nachom siegel we have miriam el
wallach who of course is here with me
and we are going to be presiding over
this amazing contest as we have
fantastic kids from mds and wonderful
graduate chefs from the ckca who are
going to be working together and trying
to build the best mana chevits hanukkah
house miriam mel wallach you all set for
this big competition how are you boss
all right everything good thank god
already this is very exciting it means
hanukkah is right around the corner have
you checked out some of the decorations
uh we have a lot of great decorations
and i want to explain what's happening
maybe we should go through the rules for
everybody okay but i'm just telling you
i claimed the rest of the tea biscuits
oh anybody who wants to wrestle me to
the floor for the rest of the tea
biscuits
brought along tea biscuits in a unique
twist to this year's event that's it you
get to bring along your own
edible props is that how we put it we or
decorations
all right food decorations that would
also work all right here's how here's
what's happening uh and i think we
should really start the clock on this
competition really soon right we should
get it going here's how it's going to
happen
everybody behind me is either a chef or
a student and we've paired up these
teams and together they're going to try
and work very hard to build the best
looking hanukkah house now there's only
one person in this room that has a
really tough immense challenge you know
who that is right not me it's not you
thank god it's somebody who's going to
be uh probably uh praised by some and
scrutinized by others our official judge
who is going to be here today from
matashevits and is going to be
responsible for choosing one winner of
this competition a very tough position
to be in you agree i do that is a tough
position we'll meet that judge coming up
later on all right we have four stations
behind us you see everybody stations one
two three and four and i will introduce
the contestants and then we'll start the
clock and explain exactly what's going
on everybody here a graduate chef of the
ckca uh or a student here at manhattan
day school at the uh and help me out
here danny at at uh table number one we
have uh chef
malka hershkowicz am i right chef
malcolm herschko it's a table number one
paired with jeremiah schwartz round of
applause for table number one please
at number two station number two
we have
chef deborah benelli teamed up with jem
hannan let's have a nice round of
applause for station number two
this is getting intense isn't it uh we
move over to station number three and we
have chef menachem redder chef menachem
redder and andy samuels they're together
at table number three
they're raring to go to build their
chanukah house from manichevits and at
table number four we have chef marlene
lundy and chevy epstein a round of
applause for everybody at table number
four all right do they look ready do
these eight participants look like
they've got their game face on they do
have their game faces on and they've
also i mentioned before off camera that
there seems to have been some trash
talking already no yeah that that sounds
dangerous four jews in a room there's
gonna be trash talking there you go i
think we're ready to start uh we have
gavriel siegel on the timer we're gonna
give everybody 40 minutes to build the
hanukkah house and we will continue to
keep a close eye on everything that's
going on here obviously we'll speak to
our friends from manishevits get a word
in from our friends at manhattan day
school and we'll get a word in about the
ckca and their incredible work in
brooklyn new york and beyond is
everybody ready here we go open up your
manuscenuka house
and start putting it together whoever
builds the nicest one including using
your own edible props your own
decorations will be declared the winner
here today and we'll walk away with the
grand prize great prizes by the way
today yes and we should just make sure
to review that everyone brought in every
chef was allowed to bring in five of his
or her own specific ingredients or
gramble um yes or individualized
ingredients
to with which to decorate the houses and
one decorating tool okay so everybody's
allowed to bring one decorating tool a
change from last year's competition and
another change
another change is that it seems so far
that all the houses are intact i can't
believe
so shout out to aaron gordon who um
was a little bit putting his house
together like humpty dumpty but and i'm
going to give a nice uh shout out to
everybody at mds who obviously have a
very good receiving department excellent
because nothing got none of the none of
the amount of chevits house uh cookies
or crackers
are are cracked they're in fact in
intact all right so the hanukkah house
from manushevitz is a vanilla cookie
it's a vanilla cookie decorating kit you
see that here it's a decorating kick
that is available in your stores it's
all over the place it's available
nationwide obviously if you head to the
web you'll find it in many different
locations including the
website and this hanukkah house if you
love vanilla cookies boy you're in good
shape you're ready for something really
delicious it includes whoa it includes
listen to this
four icing colors
sprinkles mini beads a six point star
and how important that is for hanukkah
uh menorah and mazouza sugar decorations
sanding sugar and all the instructions
of how to do it are on the back of the
box how much sanding sugar do you guys
have at the seagull residence a lot oh
do we have a lot of colors i'm sure i
wake up every morning i walk through the
dining room i'm filled with sanding
sugar it's all over
yes it's
uh you actually have it in your house um
no okay but i was trying to think of the
most random thing that was on here that
i would not own and so all those items
are in every single box including the
one you purchase in your store in
addition to that every one of these
teams was allowed to bring their own
items and as we go through this and
allow them to get into the competition
we will uh start start figuring out or
discovering which items they brought
here today on their own so the chefs
have started uh the manhattan day school
youngsters are assisting them and
actually working with them i should say
as a team and the grand prize today and
all the prizes by the way uh our friends
at manoshevitz made sure to get uh some
really great gifts and all the prizes
today are being provided by michael's
have you heard of michael's the craft
from what i'm told michael's is a really
cool craft place and very well known and
today the team that wins today's
competition
the students who wins is going to be
receiving a 100 gift card from michaels
and the chef that wins a 150 gift card
from michaels in addition every
youngster will leave today with a
hanukkah house and a gift card from
michael's as well so everybody's going
to be treated to
a delicious hanukkah house and of course
to a michael's gift certificate
to enjoy
uh after their appearance here at
manhattan day school yes you got to see
what's going on here well what is that
you describe it for me please since i
have i i never have a clue and i see
people baking decorating cooking i can't
figure out is it cool not cool with
exacto knives that's number one what is
that
that's that's just fun if you're a kid
it's a little frightening if you're the
adult there are exacto knives out we
have students who are needing packages
of icing i mean what was the last time
you saw a kid needing a pa and she's
kneading let me tell you that's some
that's some skill we have stuff going on
over here we have i we have piping bags
that are out by the way this is why you
brought me just because i know the lingo
oh you got some offset spatulas
i'm still trying to figure out what was
provided by managed evidence and what
they brought on their own there are sour
sticks and mike and ike's in the house
holy cow i know that's a lot of fun who
wouldn't want their hanukkah house to
have that on the tea biscuits actually
like my real house we made out of mica
nikes
we should also mention by the way in
terms of the nars kite that i usually
contribute the national holiday this
friday is the gingerbread house oh i
love when it comes out on a friday it's
always disturbing when it's earlier in
the week it throws off the whole
calendar but i like it very much when
it's on a friday so i guess this week
we'll call it the hanukkah house right
national fabulous absolutely and thank
you man of chevis all right um how much
time has elapsed so far i got real sigel
we have 35 minutes left the first five
minutes are all very often the toughest
five minutes for these people are the
first five minutes it's there's there
seems to be little struggle but more
fighting with the icing i would have to
i would have to say
what do you mean what type of what type
of trouble could icing give you well i
will put it to this way if i had to bet
on who would win the icing or the chef
yeah i'm betting on the icing does it
happen all the time or just in this case
right now
one of our chefs has just said it always
chef monokum has uh he's taking that bet
chef menachem has completely given into
the icing he's admitted that in every
isaac situation he's the loser imagine
that look how quickly the houses are
being put together and that by the way
is part of
the um appeal yes of the hanukkah house
is that every person who buys a hanukkah
house or buys a kid should understand
that they are assembled quite easily and
the goal of this competition is to see
the different ways that they can be
decorated and the different ways that
people's personalities or creativity can
be displayed through their hanukkah
house the the struggle so to speak is
not in the assembly of the hanukkah
house but rather how are we going to
decorate it this year you know what i
discovered yesterday on the internet
that of all the houses out there during
this time of year the hanukkah house is
the least expensive our friends in
manichevids have not always made jews
made a house that was more less
expensive than everyone else never has
anything that never has happened before
but in this case man of chevis has done
everybody a good favor they've gone
ahead and created a delicious treat and
a great project for hanukkah and in
addition to that did it at a reasonable
price how do you like that i'd ask
everybody for a round of applause but
they're so busy
we don't want to disturb chef menachem
in the icing fight there's fondant being
rolled over here is that a good thing or
a bad thing well if you're the fondant
it's a bad thing but if you're the
contestant it's a great thing really
yeah
so this this team this team which is i
got to get my team straight here uh
that's uh that's uh chef debra and
student gem right that's this team team
number two the two of them have what you
would call what an advantage or a
something creative that other teams may
not have thought of i think it's going
to depend a lot on their time management
so whatever so whatever that stuff is
that you mentioned it takes time to work
with you're saying danny if you can zero
in on chef menachem and his continual
fight with the icing it would probably
provide a lot of entertainment menachem
and andy have their house built look at
this they can practically rent out the
place already it is built
it is up
the contractors are thrilled yeah met
the deadline oh cause they're coming
back year after year to fix that roof
buddy
yeah if that's your chimney you're not
touching my house i don't like to split
the top of the roof you know that
especially on a day like today can cause
some problems chef am i am i messing
with your game should i just be quiet
now you know how my kids feel i i really
one of the things we love doing during
the competition is speaking to the chefs
and students but i feel guilty they're
so they're so focused on what's
happening here this is super cute i feel
like
what do you think miriam can we
interrupt and we can yeah i'll be i can
be quiet so do me a favor take this
microphone
say hello to a chef merlin you got a mic
over there i do say hello to chef merlin
and to chevy they're teamed up here at
table number four and and find out what
their plan is here chef marlene how are
you
i am well what we got going on here well
we already put the house together now
we're gonna start decorating pretty soon
that is one neat house thank you thank
you that is one yes chevy have you ever
built a house before
no do you think you're going to be
building a house again
maybe all right
so far what's the most fun part
i don't know all right well we'll come
back to you have you eaten have you
tried the food yet
have you sampled any of the candy you
can tell me nobody's listening your
parents are not here
okay i just was kidding about the
parents part um
well all right so you haven't tasted any
i can tell you i tried it last year it's
actually quite good thank you madam chef
it's for not only making a fun product
but actually one that tastes good rabbi
besser is sneaking behind here robbie
besser you should just come on here
we have a round of applause for by
besser
i think in advance of next year
investors going to make sure that the
kindergarten builds houses
so that the question will be yes the
next time you ask rabbi besser thank you
for joining us thank you thank you for
hosting us pleasure i really appreciate
that i this we're we're having a good
time
what are you guys doing tomorrow it's
very intense
uh
tomorrow we're starting to work on purim
seeing what we can come up with
right not bad by the way i you're always
you're always one step ahead of me
always one hog ahead of me so
did you pick the four cutest kids in
school because they're adorable uh we
have baruch hashan 550 cute kids in
school yes
and they're they are they are adorable
and you should know by the way that when
we were setting up before before
everyone else was here and i was just
here i had a number of students who just
voluntarily not these four kids came
over and were very helpful wanted to
know what was going on took the
tablecloths from me did it all by
themselves
super cute that's great i also just want
to mention how beautiful the lobby is
because not every school really pays
attention either to the ceiling or to
the floor or to the walls but here at
mds it's really quite engaging very
child centered and very colorful so
thank you it is the perfect location
what are your hanukkah plans
building a house
no in fact we have some great activities
coming up here and
we have the
uncommissioned concert coming in
we have uh nahum's friend
coming in
the shlock rock oh
solomon nice and on tuesday 24th that
kushner sir rebbie
who's a very famous hasidis rebbe
will be coming here lighting uh the
kushner's menorah which is 200 years old
wow and giving brachas and khan kikel to
all the children is that does that top
our house competition of course not we
need somewhere for him to stay okay
first comes the house then comes to
rebbe it's not yeah exactly exactly all
right so malcolm where are we now well
we're in like i must say we're in this
beautiful lobby and you made a very good
point anybody watching around the world
the festive atmosphere of the manhattan
day school entrance is exactly what goes
on here every single day it's an amazing
place a lot of warmth and uh this is not
a show this i mean it's a show but you
know what i mean they they are like this
on a daily basis where are we at now
very simple you're going to move over to
table number three and you're going to
speak to chef menachem and andy chef
menachem and andy samuels together i
think i'm better off just talking to
andy okay go ahead
andy
hi hi how are you i'm good yeah having a
good time
tell me what you're up to
well we're making all the diamonds well
these lines the same color like that
cool
that's great and how's it working with
chef manaham
is he on his game
is he fighting with the icing yes okay
how's the offset spatula working out
very well was this your first time using
an offset spatula
is it going to be your last time
probably not excellent this is the start
of a new career andy
this is your first time also working
with an offset spatula all right let's
keep that between us what table did you
want me to head to andy best of luck to
you we're going to chef debra
deborah and jem are together
and deborah's going to give you a
perspective on a lot of green lines that
are going on the side of her house so
ask the chef what that's all about um
how are you we are doing the hanukkah
house for what's the family's name
the potter's family in pasadena
california and mrs potter loves pastels
and her husband is a terrific gardener
and that's what all these vines are
about fantastic okay so you have
vines going in different directions and
you actually have you have a narrative
to go along with your house yes we have
a story they have a destination
excellent okay that's exciting and how
is how's the collaboration going very
good she's very talented amazing is this
oh i forgot to put that on okay well we
wouldn't want to forget that
did you choose the colors or these are
the colors that were assigned uh no i
chose these colors because um you know
mrs potter loves pastels loves pastels
right fantastic
can we get a can we get a hint as to
where the mike and ikes are coming in uh
on the side of the house
fantastic
oh that is
gonna do this one beautiful
and how are we doing with time godfrey
yeah let's have the time there 27
minutes to go until the houses have to
be completed and we'll introduce to you
the person who's gonna be responsible
for judging this competition not me not
you when we go to table number one we've
got uh um jeremiah we've got uh where
are we jeremiah and malka chef malka
hershkowitz and jeremiah schwartz
together and look at the detail on their
front door
they are paying attention i think
there's a burglar alarm in the front
door that's how detailed it is ask the
chef about that that's pretty great how
are you chef malka i'm good everything
working out
so far so good jeremiah is working hard
jeremiah how's it going good yeah having
a good time yeah would you rather be in
class no okay then we're on the same
page by the way i don't want to be in
class either
excellent is that your first you are
doing a great job with that piping bag
did you know that was a piping bag no
you could say yes
i know i really didn't okay that's fine
you know you know your mom's here
yes i do you do do you know that your
shoes weren't tied before and it was
totally stressing her out i know all
right we like stressing out our parents
yeah
when necessary right exactly all right
so we have yellow doors we sorry we have
yellow windows we have a blue door
fantastic what kind of uh surprise
decorations did you come up with
um so i thought of cinnamon sticks and
hopefully we can put like some logs on
the side for firewood nice just an idea
anybody taste any ingredients yet we're
going to accessorize that house there's
no time to taste the ingredients of chef
malcolm there'll be time later don't
worry excellent all right thank you
chefs thank you students we're here at
manhattan day school and we are building
the manuscripts hanukkah house the
person responsible for judging all of
this
is the assistant brand manager at
manishevitz at sarah stromer
sarah let's get sarah on camera here she
first of all everyone's going to want to
know how to identify her when she
reaches her decision i can tell you that
much welcome to our big competition and
thank you for hosting us at manushevitz
thank you for having me a pleasure all
right uh you're looking at what's going
on here we have four high quality teams
what is impressing you so far in general
what's going to make this so difficult
to judge for you how intensely people
are working yeah they are putting in a
lot of effort aren't they yeah
and a lot of houses are up already yeah
a lot of good things are are happening
here
i don't want to ask you if you're
leaning one way or the other yet but i
would bet you're not i would bet you'd
think it's too early to make any
evaluation it's very early to make that
decision
oh we must be in school that is not the
official govery siegel belt
that is just class uh all right
so we're going to uh we're going to turn
to you at the end of all this and you'll
tell us who is the winner the winner is
receiving a gift certificate for a gift
card i should say from michaels you
mentioned that all the participants are
going to be receiving all the chefs are
going to be receiving and the students
are going to be receiving everyone's
getting a michael's dick we're going to
get michael's gift cards we want to
thank them very much for participating
with mata shevitz in this when i said
this is available the hanukkah house is
available all around the country that's
a true statement right that is a true
statement it is everywhere if people go
on the web what's the easiest way for
them to order it there are three ways
they could go to the manachevitstore.com
they could go to ohnuts.com the onox
candy store is carrying it and we'll
ship it nice amazon.com also is carrying
it and they will ship it as well and
there are a ton of
supermarkets and pharmacies even cvs
rite aid walgreens and tons of
supermarkets that are carrying it and we
encourage people to either email us or
contact us through any of our social
media to find out the nearest location
to them to find a place to get it
because there is limited amounts one of
my colleagues in the radio business
posted on a social media site recently
how he discovered the hanukkah house and
was thrilled i don't know if you saw
that yeah you saw that was really cool
and he's got a lot of followers i'll
tell you that much and last year this
really burst onto the scene for us a lot
of us had not heard of the manufacturer
house until last hanukkah uh how many
years have been around this is a
tradition already for how long it
started in 2012 so it's still a baby but
it's
it's out there and people know it and
people love it
costco also carries it and people are
tweeting us that they find it in costco
and they're loving it you can even buy
the hanukkah house in bulk
they have the large cottages the
extraordinary still the same size that
you could
fall
kidding around all right uh you can make
your whole gated community
of its hanukkah house sarah stromer is
ready to judge this competition she's
looking intently to see how both these
chefs and the students are doing here at
manhattan day school and building the
chronic house good luck with this and
right after you make your decision make
sure to dash for the door you know how
it is exactly with you judges better you
than us exactly we don't have to make
this decision that's for sure thank you
sarah thank you all right we're here at
manhattan day school and i want to thank
zk who's our engineer and of course
danny goldberg who's taking care of our
camera work and producing our show today
as miriam elwalik and i are here as the
commenters the commentators those who
are bringing you the play-by-play of
this incredible competition going on in
manhattan day school you know mds i know
this because six of my kids went through
the mds preschool they're not far into
really cool projects i can tell you as a
parent who watched many a project walk
through the door
these are very skilled kids when it
comes to projects and look at this their
parents agree with me they have had many
years of tremendous work in the area of
arts and crafts and building projects
for holidays that they've brought home i
mean
you walk you walk into an mds home
before a holiday you'll see stacks and
stacks of projects and books at
different folders that have been created
by the students and their teachers in
advance in a big holiday you can't
possibly sit down to a pesach seder
without a crate full of different items
that have been created at manhattan day
school and it's the same with hanukkah
they'll be coming home next week with a
whole bunch of great projects right am i
right what are you laughing at over
there they've built a table inside the
house oh my gosh that is creative
hence the need for the tea biscuits a
table inside that they really could use
the extra large house maybe they want to
put a few bedrooms in there
and other accessories as well this is
super intense folks so as we build the
chanukah house from mana chev it's got
real seagull what are we at
we have 20 minutes to go we have 20
minutes to go and then the
and then the the brief competition
between these four teams will be over
the next chef to have a fight with the
icing
station number two yeah
it seems to be a common problem
i'm telling you it's good that i wasn't
asked to build one of these things i it
would be a disgrace you know what that's
what we should do this afternoon build a
hanukkah house yes
we have like an extra hour in the studio
today can i start pointing out how some
of these houses are developing yes
station number four where we have chef
merlin and student chevy what do you
think this is already starting to look
like a real house right it's super cool
it looks nice at station number three
where we have chef menachem and andy
samuels also beginning to look like a
very interesting house i don't know if i
would paint my roof the way they've done
it but i will tell you that this
certainly has some charm to it i also
like the grass that's surrounding the
front and backyard as well and there are
lego men
in attendance here at
it's jewish lego men or lego jew i don't
know where the adjective goes there if
you go to chef debra
and jem they already not only have put
up this unique front door that i spoke
about or they're working on that but on
the back of their house they have
chanukah decorations sort of at holiday
time people like to commemorate their
holiday but with it with the house being
lit up a certain way they already have
both a hanukkiah a hanukkah menorah and
the dreidel on the side of their house
because mrs potter likes pastels that
must be there we go and mrs potter seems
to really love yellow and green i can
tell you that yes and there seems to be
a light
they're right they're putting a light in
there's a light show did you know there
was a light show this is amazing if you
want to read inside the house at night
we need the potters to see inside the
house nice i like that that's fun and
totally psyching elsa oh wait the logs
are in place and finally uh chef malka
and jeremiah schwartz have made good on
their commitment that they are going to
use the cinnamon sticks
to uh to
make it look like there there are wooden
logs around the house give it that
farm-like country-like feel
um it's a boring name zonos and a
barramundi summon there you go right
there all in one house and and the and
it's shaping up as well to be a great
looking
hanukkah house so there you go the
do-it-yourself manuschevitz hanukkah
house is a vanilla cookie decorating kid
everything is included including the
icing colors the sprinkles the mini
beads the six pointed star of david
minora and mozilla sugar decorations
sanding sugar and all the instructions
are on the box it's quick build which
means that the setup board
is really easy to put together in
addition to being edible is really easy
to put together which is really cool and
we should
for a moment we should talk about the
ckca absolutely because the center for
kosher culinary arts
under the uh leadership of chef jesse
blonder has gone ahead and again
cooperated with us in a wonderful stunt
uh here at the home signal network in
this case providing four of their
incredible graduates to work with the
students and to show the world what it's
like to build a manufacture house what
can you tell me about ckca well i've
attended actually a number of classes
there they're a tremendous amount of fun
especially date night and the
competition steak night is a favorite at
the wallex
it's a uh do you cook steaks well you
don't cook states at the wallex but you
pay for the class at ckca and you go and
you you use the skills that you pick
correct and there's also
well i'm sure it has a different name a
classier name but it's butchering night
where there is a okay that's what it is
where there's a
large
piece of animal and you learn how to cut
the different cuts and cut the different
pieces of meat and then you prepare them
very nice with chef avraham wiseman all
these chefs by the way really
appreciated the way you just described
that oh i'm a vegetarian that's as close
as we get they really thought you did a
good job with that one let me tell you
sorry about that um also i want to take
an opportunity to uh since we're here at
manhattan day school and i have in the
siegel family has such an amazing
history here i want to uh i want to
thank rabbi besser i want to thank uh
mrs melzer maura aviva mr incel and of
course toyota did you notice toyota
behind the desk when you walked in i did
yeah toyota is in charge of security
here the only way that we know
that all of the hanukkah houses are
secure and have the proper amount of
supervision safety wise is because
toyota is in charge we are in new york
city if you're watching around the world
this is not what happens every day in
new york but it's happening today at mds
we're building the manufacture house at
four different stations and one of these
teams will be declared the winner by our
representative from manishevids we have
how much time left
16 minutes chefs and students we have 16
minutes to go until we declare this
competition over until we ask you to
drop your icing and not drop the house
but drop your eyes away from the step
away from the house that's right so we
have fondue
sardines are up we have fondant that was
rolled over here and is then cut with an
exacto knife we have that is that is
over here at table number two or station
number two over here at station number
one it looks if i'm not mistaken like
the chimney is being bricked am i right
chef malka
i am right bricked all right i was right
once today we'll take that so this the
and jeremiah is actually
delicately placing we're deciding where
to place the little we have mug we have
the the six-pointed stars right we have
our mug and duvet and we have the two
menorahs all that are those are icing
those are like hardened fondant they're
edible correct okay from what i'm told
they're delicious they came with that
and a cup of coffee and you're set for
the rest of the day
that a pastry and a cup of coffee i
should ask sarah from manishevitz by the
way when i have her on later
when people eat the chanukah house like
let's say someone builds it next tuesday
in advance of the first night of
hanukkah did they then go ahead that
night and eat the hanukkah house does it
have to last for eight days and you eat
it bit by bit does it last till the
eighth day and you don't even start
eating till day eight of chanukah this
is one of the most confusing regulations
i've ever thought of it's like purim by
the way the day after hanukkah is over
nobody eats it well obviously you asked
you asked the people from adam shevitz
they're not selling much after hanukkah
but beforehand whoo this thing is flying
off the shelves there's a lot of yellow
sanding sugar being sprinkled in
in earnest by andy over here at station
number three yeah andy seems to be a
standing sugar aficionado yeah andy
i we get a mic for andy let me just
borrow that for a second
andy you are super excited about that
yellow sanding sugar
so what were you
did you have a design in mind or you
were just feeling a lot of sanding sugar
both excellent so in terms of the design
tell me what we've got going on because
i see that there's a menorah it seems to
almost be lit on this side of the house
which i'm sure we'll get when we look at
the different angles but what else do we
have going on we have on the roof we
have stripes like yellow blue yellow
blue yellow blue yellow and then on this
side it's
dark blue yellow dark blue light blue
dark blue yellow dark blue
and where are we going to put the jewish
lego man
um we're going to make him touching the
masseuse
nice very
good choice there good choice there andy
and by the way are you a big fan of the
candy buttons because the candy buttons
were the were one of the
um decorations that chef menachem
you can keep moving with the icing there
don't worry about me
so the candy buttons were one of the
ingredients that chef manafort brought
with him which is your favorite color
um
what do you mean my favorite color of
the candy buttons oh blue do you think
they all taste alike is it like eminem's
where people think that they taste
they're very close but they're very
close yeah all right i don't want to
disrupt you and i certainly do not want
to distract chef menachem so we will get
back to you how we doing over here this
is a super pretty house
hey don't influence the judges mrs
wallace i'm i'm i'm i heard you say
super pretty sarah i hope the judge had
her ears closed on that one
super pretty house hey again okay okay
okay okay no it's not the prettiest
how's it working together
any major fights
no food fights
would you rather be in class
okay we'll just make what class are you
missing by the way hebrew all right
we'll learn some more hebrew later yeah
so you know a little less hebrew exactly
you're not going to build this
everything you didn't end up going to
israel anyway don't they thumbs up for
that there boss thank you excellent
chef marlene is this easier or oh there
went my mic is this easier or harder to
assemble than you expected it's easy
it's very easy yes fantastic so would
you with my assistant
perfect nice oh big props
nice job so look at that when it says
here
quick build edible setup board included
do-it-yourself easy to build manufa is a
hundred percent accurate
chef merlin says yes it's easy to build
i like that a product that's true to its
word no don't you enjoy that
it's all good how much time do we got
we're ready what's the clock say
11 minutes 11 minutes and that'll do it
for the competition oh man and then the
pressure will really start by the way we
should just uh remind everybody where we
were last year because we do think
manushevitz this is our second year can
you imagine last year we had this
incredible uh stun show that we did at
the laviate library in cedarhurst
and we had four amazing teams just like
this year
and the competition was really hot and
heavy so to speak
and it was a great show it went so what
you'd think you would think
that you know
why on earth would somebody go ahead and
want to do this competition again and
then mana chevits and everybody around
the country was so thrilled with the
excitement that this competition brought
we went ahead and and you actually
thought of a great idea to bring it to a
great school manhattan day school to
include ckca to include their original
items a lot of things that were brought
here that are not included in the box
and now we have volume two or year two
of the hanukkah house competition
imagine that and soon we're gonna have a
winner declared as the tension continues
to mount at the manhattan day school
lobby you feel that tension it's super
exciting
oh look and chef exciting all right chef
mulkey by the way actually made it snow
on the top of her roof oh i like the top
am i right on the top of your chimney
fantastic it's snowing there
in that neighborhood it's snowing and
that neighborhood is snowing can i ask
what the marshmallows are going to be
for um
they were back up all right everybody's
got to have back up we brought in such
experienced chefs they actually knew to
bring backup material that's how good
these chefs are amazing and we have
jeremiah also using the yellow sanding
sugar over here all right jeremiah pour
it on
no matter what the chef tells you you
always want to use more than less that's
the rule that seems to be wow that's the
trend huh that is yeah less is not more
here is going to be more exactly a big
thank you to jesse blonder and everybody
from ckca the center for kosher culinary
arts search them online if you're
looking to become a great kosher chef
they do great even if you don't want to
be a great kosher chef you just want to
be part of an event
that's a lot of fun they put together a
bunch of events that are a lot of fun on
a regular basis you can check that out
there on coney island avenue in brooklyn
new york we mentioned earlier that the
manischewitz assistant brand manager
sarah stromer is going to be making the
big decision here today and as she
mentioned earlier the manushevitz
hanukkah house is available all around
the country places like some of the top
um the top stores in the in the country
like cvs and costco they carry it uh
amazon carries it online the
manufacturer of course has it online oh
nuts has it online you could buy it and
enjoy it and if you order it today as
you watch this in the first run you
could certainly have it before hanukkah
we should also by the way make mention
it's a nut-free product
well it has to be right otherwise you
wouldn't have been invited to manage
school correct but i should just make
sure that everyone notices it is not it
does contain soy and wheat for those
people who have allergies but everyone
should just know it is a nut did any of
the teams bring in peanuts or anything
no as one of the extras no you're sure
correct did we do it oh we have toyota's
security so she checked and made she uh
she saw my dunkin donuts bag and
specifically made sure that everything
that there was no doughnut involved oh
so my plan to have you turned away
completely didn't work but she did give
you a hard time no yeah it was this
close it was this close all right there
was a big picture of me with a line over
it when i got it so i tried to convey
that message but by the time i was here
it seems to have gone for an hour so
thank you to everybody at manushevitz
and i remind you that manuschevitz is
part of their friendship and teamwork
with michaels
uh has gone ahead and michael's has
provided amazing gift cards for all of
our participants today which means
everyone's going to walk away with great
prizes and hanukkah houses on their own
but in addition to that the winner of
the competition excuse me i haven't said
anything i'm just laughing because i'm
thinking about if you and i had a table
doing this also what ours would look
like i know what you would look like
that much
there'd be icing everywhere that's for
sure um
why are you making the hanukkah frat
house
you've had a lot of yeah what's the time
guys oh sorry let's try to focus on this
yeah
no seven minutes and 40 seconds
seven minutes and 40 seconds does this
does this mds scoreboard turn into a
countdown clock by any chance no
we got to work out we're going to work
on that for next year it welcomed us by
the way it did welcome yes very nice and
menacing did it spell your name right um
the 100 gift card goes to the student
the 150 gift card goes to our winning
chef and then of course gift cards of
other denominations are being given to
everybody who's participating today
thank you michaels and thank you for
working with mata chevettes to make
today a very special day for us and a
really fun and cool competition the
hanukkah homes
the hanukkah houses well some of them
look like homes already they are being
built as we speak with all the extras
and all the different items that come in
the hanukkah house box and we're already
into the home stretch the last few
minutes six minutes and change remain in
the comp seven minutes remain in the
competition and i want to thank gavrie
siegel who's handling the clock
and
every house you know it's funny about 10
minutes ago
certain houses i looked at that are
behind us at the different stations and
i said uh-oh you know where is this
going do they realize there's only a few
minutes left to this whole thing and now
look just a few minutes later the houses
look great with a lot of great
accoutrements around them you'd notice
the grass and the and the different
things around the houses well i would
definitely take a moment when the
competition is over to ask the chefs if
the time management
of this entire project was one of the
more challenge challenging part of this
competition
that is i'm sure if you had endless time
it would be a different way to build it
exactly you know when you buy it for
your house for your home you do have
endless time you know that
unless you have a really pressing
dreidel game to go to
other than that you have all the time
you need
um where's our judge we're sarah
yeah i've heard of that sarah
join miriam and myself here for a moment
but put her in the center for a moment
we'll put her on the hot seat where's
her microphone zk
let's get sarah over here
i don't know i don't know what your
feelings are on this
but you are the judge
and i will tell you now that as much as
we were joking about it before i am glad
i'm not the judge because these are
last year we had great houses and if you
look at the video from last year they
were very impressive with the
professional chefs uh completely you
know on the roster here this year we may
have stepped it up uh maybe even higher
quality as you look at this you must say
to yourself you have a very tough
decision to make
very tough i will say that they're
coming out better than the ones i did i
had to make one for kosher fest
to put out there for us to have on
display
so don't worry nobody goes to kosher
fest i'm sure nobody saw what you
thought
right exactly so you were responsible
for building the hanukkah house before
kosher fest and you couldn't keep up
with today's did you want us to get an
mds kid to go with you for next year
next year right okay one of these kids
with me yeah comes to my house and
andy's got game andy yeah i see this
that's it that's all you need is that
smile i'll sell them all for so far
you've highlighted a couple of different
tables for you yeah i like that i well i
think i've highlighted old's table have
you highlighted everything i don't love
one of my children more than they are
giving at least one compliment to every
team here that is
you know me i'm trying to be as fair as
possible yeah
uh anyway so you have a tough decision
to make very tough and um keep moving
around there's an inclusion of guilt by
the way of hanukkah yes at the first
time see like i don't know if that that
might actually i know it's an influence
propel a judge to say hey
you know look this team has used this
and it's really hanukkah related and all
that you know yeah i was thinking of
using applesauce on one of the houses
because we use it for latkes so you know
that's a hanukkah item
how would that affect that right
just dump a tablespoon of applesauce
inside the house i figured
yeah i mean how many hanukkah houses you
know when i said before that we should
assemble this in the afternoon in the
studio now that there's applesauce
involved there's a know i mean you know
all you got to do is is try to recreate
what happens in a real home you know
much applesauce ends up on the floor
during hanukkah because of latke eating
come on do you think zk lets us eat in
the studio there's no applesauce allowed
in the studio maybe you're right but you
know we're not building a studio we're
building a nice home all right uh sarah
good luck we'll introduce you again when
the time runs out and when
three and a half minutes all right three
and a half minutes everybody now we
really have to start watching the clock
danny let's pan around and show
everybody what's happening so you're
right danny the first one to your your
left to your left we have um
chef malka hershkowitz with jeremiah
schwartz probably your last good look at
what they're doing uh before they end
everybody around the world pay careful
attention to what's going on in table
number one it's snowing on table number
one lots of snow at table number one
i guess mauka and jeremiah come from a
really cold weather place it's a little
bit life imitating art right now here in
new york then as we move to table number
two you'll meet chef deborah benelli and
jem hannan there together as chef and
fourth grader here at manhattan day
school building a hanukkah house from
manishevitz lots of detail on this one
take a good look and you'll see what
they're up to with just three minutes to
go
we move on to table number three where
chef menachem roder menachem redder and
andy samuels are doing their hanukkah
house and building it together another
house with great detail and a lot of
extra items we should give the chefs an
opportunity to really that's being
plated i would say that that
table number four station number four is
the equivalent of being plated we'll get
to four as we uh as we remind everybody
that chef marlene lundy and chevy
epstein together it looks like they've
declared themselves built it looks like
both chef marlene can we get him
chevy are now
on vacation they've they're going on
winter vacation the house is built the
contractor is happy and now they're
going away chevy can we see your hands
can you hold up your hands for danny i
want everyone to see those are serious
it was a serious house building that's
it uh all right this house looks like
it's ready it's complete
and uh judge sarah is gonna have to look
at this one carefully along with the
other three and come up with a decision
it also looks very stable
it does look like a stable house
remember last year's have a good
foundation
all right don't hold these good
foundation last year we had a couple of
homes that did not look as stable yeah
and uh on the way out of the uh
competition last year i think they
officially fell apart not only didn't
they look stable they did not stay
stable what are we doing on time
one minute to go wow
at 10 seconds we'll ask everybody in the
lobby to participate in our countdown
after all we have to make it as dramatic
as possible the candy buttons are being
applied by the way station number three
how long are we into the show zkay
how much 42 42 okay perfect timing
once we have counted down
once we have counting down we are going
to ask
judge sarah to take a close look at all
four of the houses that have been built
we will again thank our teams we will
reiterate the prizes that are being
given out today at manhattan day school
and then we will thank mds and mata
shevitz and the ckca
40 seconds and everybody who helped us
in today's efforts with the home signal
network you know i couldn't figure out
by the way what station one was going to
use the box of confectionary sugar for
oh gosh it's snow
half genius is that i want you to know
10 minutes ago there was nothing on that
table i know it's amazing what they're
doing and you got hansel and gretel's
hanukkah house over there oh gosh that
one looks oh they all look edible it's
unbelievable oh my god 20 seconds
because chef marlene will tell you that
the most important part about baking and
cooking is cleaning up afterwards right
chef
most importantly seven
six
five
four three
two
one that is it hands up everybody
oh my gosh
we have transformed manhattan day school
into an amazing culinary establishment
today
in the lobby of manhattan day school in
new york city
those of you watching around the world
you're going to be treated one more time
to the go round our cameraman danny is
going to be focusing on all four of the
houses as judge sarah stromer of
manichevit starts to look closely and
come up with her evaluation of today's
competition and he's been caught
green-handed he's been quite quick and
he's been quite green-handed danny we
should just get a shot now of andy's
hands because um
i dare yeah anybody you know if we ask
rabbi besser who he thinks should win
he's got to give one of those diplomatic
answers right they're all winners here
right he'll say something like they're
all winners let's give it a whirl let's
give it a shot let's go to my best sir
take that microphone and say rabbi
besser in your opinion
who is the winner of today's copyright
let's see what if he can come up with a
creative diplomatic answer what do the
seagull children and stephen wallace
have in common and the answer is rabbi
besser as principal of their school wow
stephen did not go to mds but steven's
joke always was that he was with rabbi
besser so much they shared an office
yes
and i just announced that you wouldn't
say that about my kids would you rather
absolutely not all right zk that's on
we're ready okay uh miriam go ahead ask
the question
so
so what yeah you know great right how
much fun was this amazing i don't know
which other network's coming in here to
pull some kind of a stunt like this but
i'm happy that you decided to part
partner with us ask him who the winner
is come on okay well malcolm's egging
you on and i'm trying to be nice but hey
oh well
so
what do you think i think the number one
winner here
is the nakhon siegel show thank you oh
that's good of course you got a nice
show lots of
drama thank you well we definitely bring
our own drama
i think the number two winner
is the manuscripts company all right
let's hear it from that got a lot of
publicity certainly did they certainly
did and i think it's a tie between the
chefs
and the students
a shocker
thank you rob ambassador mcmaster really
appreciates being asked that question i
told you i told you jump all over that
one let me tell you exactly oh no sarah
was like i don't know i don't know i
don't know
i don't blame you i'd panic also look at
these houses give sarah a chance to
really
yeah sarah you take your time we have a
few minutes left you take your time
examine each one carefully uh if you
have any questions you want to ask the
chefs or any of the students
go ahead and do so we should take a
group picture of all eight of the
participants right how many tea biscuits
are left sorry i'm focused on the
cheapest i'm very excited thank you
i don't get right i don't get a vote
though i don't get involved judging
exactly it's pathetic though that i'm
more excited about the tea biscuits than
the entire package of mike and ike's but
what can i say sarah's thinking back to
the one she built for kosher fest and is
about to ask the chefs you really were
able to do this right i tried my best
didn't come out like this oh okay he
also has a backstory to his
backstory let's find out
well we got to give them a second let's
give him the microphone go ahead it's in
hawaii that's why like all the windows
and stuff are falling
and the puddle it used to be frozen but
now since they're in hawaii it's it's
all blue and it's all
watery
so it's melted snow
got it chef could you do me a favor is
there a way to carefully turn this
around i'd love for everybody to see
that manhattan day school is written on
the on this side of the house you see
that yes
mds ckca nsn and manoshevitz are all
included
on that now that is one good strategy
by chef menachem
to include to include all the sponsors
on the side of his hand
andy go ahead
and a man touching him very nice
boy a lot of nice things there uh chef
can we get a little i don't want to
touch it because i i may break it but
can we uh turn it around to drop so
everyone everyone can see in the camera
the uh
the different sides to this incredible
hanukkah house
there you go wow very nice
some of the leaves that are growing from
the bottom of the
house on to the sides
and we have the
little decorations on top of the house
which is blue
and some of the silver
thing which when i was young i used to
think they were diamonds
as my mom used to do um baking with me
and she used to make wedding cakes and i
said let me put the diamonds let me put
the diamonds diamonds are a chef's best
friend right yes diamonds on a house or
a girl the house
decorated with diamonds all right thank
you chef let's move over here danny and
see maybe chef can we move this around
the drop so everybody can see the
different sides
of the chanukah house and the way it
came out this is um
mr potter's house yeah in pasadena
california that's why it's all flowers
and mrs potter loves flowers and mr
potter is a very special he's a great
gardener
so he creates his roses like a menorah
and this is the last night of hanukkah
and that's why all the flowers are in
bloom
and we've got a dreidel in the back
and on the inside we have what um we
have a table with vodkas
jelly donuts and a
a table with vodkas jelly donuts and
manure inside can you see that all the
way inside the house i don't know if you
could get can get there
nice job very nice job everybody and if
we go to table number one
chef what can you tell us about the
house um it's definitely snowing it's
very cold that's why they need their
firewood very cold
yeah um you could just twist that or
turn it around to drop so everyone can
get a perspective on what the house
looks like from all four sides
yeah can you can you do one turn if
possible i don't want to tell you i'm
not going to take the chance i don't
want to break anything
but this way they'll see that on the
back you have a nice holiday decoration
i love those windows on the back yeah
nice job on that window made what they
get i like how those windows are frost
free in the cold weather
hey yeah
beautiful
one second
drifting snow in the window there's
drifting snow in the window
all right round of applause for all four
participants
you want to go to a song and then come
back to sarah's decision i think sarah
needs to buy some time all right we're
going to go to one quick song which
miriam is going to prepare for hanukkah
5775 as we continue our celebration here
manhattan day school everyone can take a
breath i'd love to get danny if you
could set everybody up for an official
photo all four of our chefs and all four
of our students with our besser and
sarah and all of our uh wonderful hosts
and then we will continue with our
decision coming up here at the home
single network
they gonna see us from outer space
for the human race
is
no we just want to be right now
sleep
we can light it up
and we gonna let it burn down
remember
all right here we are this is the uh the
final segment of our
chanukah stun show thank you manushevitz
the manushevitz hanukkah house is
available everywhere today was built
four times over at manhattan day school
a big thank you to everybody here at mds
big thank you to michaels who's gonna be
providing the gift cards as prizes for
our winners and thank you to ckca jesse
blonder the great chef
on coney island avenue with the culinary
with the center for kosher culinary arts
on coney island avenue in brooklyn for
providing an amazing array of graduate
chefs here today to work with us much
appreciated i remind everybody
say it again
we'll get to sarah in a minute better
her than me you can say that again
uh remind everybody danny
this is the um
this is the hanukkah house as prepared
at station number one by chef malka
malkoverskovitz and andy samuel and um
jeremiah schwartz malka and jeremiah
let's have a round of applause for them
station number two we remind everybody
that chef deborah benelli and jem hannan
together built this hanukkah house at
station number two round of applause for
them
we focus on station number three in the
chanukah house with chef menachem redder
and andy samuels this is the one they
built right here
and at hanukkah house station number
four chef marlene lundy and chevy
epstein they created this hanukkah house
at station number four nice round of
applause for them
all of our students today from the
fourth grade class at manhattan day
school and now you'll see on your video
screen some of the crowd that has
gathered to be part of this amazing
tense final moments of our competition
miriam wallace joining us no one's in
class yeah miriam wallace joined me
uh sarah in the center over here uh give
us a word about how difficult this was
to judge for sarah stromer of
manishevitz how nervous are you right
now by the way i'm really nervous and
also it's like good practice for me
because we're actually having starting
today our own hanukkah
decorating competition for the houses
through facebook so some of these
students could go home again with their
families and decorate the houses that
they'll be getting and then enter
through facebook to also win some good
prizes through there so one second i'm
going this is practice man give a
recommendation to some of the parents
who are here sure go ahead take pictures
right now of your kids houses because
all right just keep posting them on
instagram posting them on facebook
immediately you know right
now on our facebook page big stuff is
going on and anybody who doesn't win
today hold back on your disdain for
sarah because she may end up making you
a winner on facebook so there's still
time are there the same rules by the way
what are the rules for the rules for the
facebook competition is you have to buy
our house use it and then basically let
your imagination go you could use
whatever and you could even build it
last year someone built a garage for it
and a whole like yard for it it was very
intense over achiever yes
basically and um it's just let your
creativity soar and it's their three
prizes and it's basically judged on
creativity how aesthetically pleasing it
looks and we have that going on so these
four students could go again and anyone
who's watching could go out and buy and
manage seventh has taken some of our
great ideas
we're happy to share with ourselves all
right four great teams sarah
now is the moment of truth now we must
award the grand prize to one of these
teams of chef and fourth grade student
here at manhattan day school
tell us who is the winner of today's
competition
i'm gonna go have with station number
two station number two
and i remind you get a close-up danny i
remind you that station number two is uh
is is uh led by um by deborah binelli
who's our chef and jem
hannan who's in fourth grade here at
manhattan day school they are the
winners
congratulations
sarah you could join them back there for
a little uh photographic evidence of
their great achievement uh now chef if
there's any way is there a way to lift
the house and hold it together with
everybody is there a way to do that if
there's a way to do that this will go
everywhere as the official what's
starting thursday it'll go everywhere as
the official winner of the manischewitz
hanukkah house competition here at the
nakhon siegel network so congratulations
to our winners congratulations to all of
our runners up as they say and as
