thanks guys for joining and it's a
pleasure to be here with vo of tonight
to make kala um two things I want to
point out before we start is first of
all you can see my green screen in the
background there's no green screen
tonight this is the real deal this is
what what it really is there's no faking
it so I can just all appreciate the
being genuine and authentic it's nice to
keep the green screen aside for a little
bit and secondly we now have 28 minutes
to make our holo dough so I'm gonna
prove to you that you can actually make
your holiday in 28 minutes or less and
15 of those minutes you're actually not
gonna be doing anything at all you're
just gonna be waiting although not
tonight because we're gonna be talking
so um it's really not as hard if you've
never made it before you'll see
who here has made challah before you let
me know if you can okay yeah I see
someone has Zachary and was that and
family I don't remember claw beautiful
nice okay so you're gonna see how easy
it is we're gonna get started here
because like I said now we have less
than 30 minutes but this is gonna be no
problem so Oh Sammy you've made Kyla
before also awesome
okay so there's lots of different
recipes out there you can find recipes
online they're not all gonna be the same
not all challah recipes are created
equal um every time I decided to switch
my husband actually wasn't so thrilled
because he liked my Kyla and he said if
it ain't broke don't fix it but I was
interested to try a new recipe and I
really thought my Halle was the best
Halle until one day my precious daughter
came home from kindergarten and they I
think was in Hollow was in the parsha
that week and so she brought home a
stylish you made from her class a little
tiny challah and we tried it at the shop
I remember so clearly we're on my
in-laws house for Friday night dinner
and here we cut open get to Scala and
she's so excited and usually masalas
that kids bring home from school or camp
they're not that delicious
this one was amazing and I was I
couldn't believe it I took as I can
fight like this is better than my
challah so sure enough I called her
teacher who's a friend of ours in the
neighborhood and got her recipe and
that's my new collar recipe and that's
the recipe I spread um so you know it's
coming from
definitely not my own okay so we are
gonna get started now the first thing
you need you guys all got your
ingredient list so conveniently I have
everything laid out with me here on the
table
I'm just gonna lower the screen a little
bit okay so the first thing we need is
sugar the sugar you could also use honey
if you want I've done that before I've
substituted brown sugar sometimes when I
run out of white sugar but here I have
white sugar we need two to three cups
which sounds like a lot but you'll see
that there's so much flour that goes
into it it's really not as much as it
seems and you could do anywhere in the
two to three cup range I usually do
three cups but I just don't fill them up
all the way my husband likes when I use
the white sugar thanks sweetie it's kind
of insane YUM okay I have the sugar the
next ingredient is the yeast so here I
have my big bag of yeast I just got from
Restaurant Depot when there was a huge
yeast shortage but often these comes in
little packets or it could come in a jar
so if you have the packets you're gonna
need four packets otherwise it's three
tablespoons I just measured mine out
beforehand because I was nervous I'm
getting towards the end of the pack so
I'm gonna throw in the bowl so spice
around three cups of sugar 3 tablespoons
of yeast okay very simple next what
we're gonna do is we're gonna pour in
some warm water not hot because that
would kill the yeast and that cold
because then it wouldn't rise but warm
water and it's
it's looking good in there it looks like
messy and yeasty okay now I'm gonna do
one second oh gotta unlock it first
Siri can you set a time red for 15
minutes okay isn't it great when someone
talks to their phone or their watch when
you're having a conversation okay we
have our timer going what I'm gonna do
is I'm actually going to cover the yeast
now with saran wrap you can use foil you
can use a towel
I choose saran wrap today and I'm just
going to falling in no big deal
oh it's nice and warm from the water so
just gonna cover it up and I actually
want to share some things with you and
then hopefully we have time we'll play a
quick little game okay so nothing is
coincidence and I actually just got off
the phone with a teacher of mine who
called me about something else and
actually I'm in the business not
business was not a business but I'm in
the business of matchmaking so we're
trying to make a match you know someone
I know someone anyways she called me for
that
and I told her I was about to do the
stylobate and I just prepared something
to talk about while the yeast is rising
because it takes 15 minutes okay this is
the 15 minutes where you're not actually
making mahalo conveniently unless you're
still doing what we just did which is
fine so anyways she told me a really
neat little bit on East okay so we put
yeast in the kala we're making a lot of
kala right 5 pounds of flour this is 5
pounds of flour a whole bag and we're
gonna use more also we're gonna use
another 1 to 3 cups depending on your
dough it's always a little different
okay so there's a lot of flour but how
much yeast do we need to make the
challah rise
we just used three tablespoons but do we
really need three tablespoons could we
let it rise with 1 tablespoon what do
you think would it still rise
yes okay thank you
yeah I would rise maybe not as much for
the rice what it rise with a teaspoon
maybe maybe a 1 teaspoon to a tablespoon
is like somewhere in this like critical
mass of how much yeast you need to make
this whole bag of flour and all these
other ingredients rise okay you need
this little bit so she compared that but
that is our role in the world that we as
juice were like the yeast okay we're
here and we have to we there no it
doesn't need to be a lot of us but a
critical mass and the key with yeast and
I was looking at my East and it's a time
like I said I don't usually buy so I
couldn't find it anywhere on here but
yeast most yeast when you buy it in the
store is active yeast right it's active
dry yeast um and that's the key is that
the yeast is active and you put a little
bit of yeast in this big bowl with all
these other ingredients and it helps
everything else to rise so too with us
Jews there's not a ton of us but we need
a critical mass but the key is that we
need to be active and by us being active
we're helping and allowing the whole
world to rise up with us and it's so
cool cuz I asked her about that more and
it's just such a cool idea because if
you think about it when you make makalah
yes there's yeast in McCulloch I mean
used is so important because it makes it
rise and we even stopped for 15 minutes
in the middle of challah baking so let
it do its thing but it's not like yeast
bread we don't call it you spread it's
bread it's challah so the yeast is that
critical mass it's making the big
difference in the greater good it's not
serving itself right if it was just
there to serve itself and make itself
look good and important it would be
called yeast bread but it's not it's
called Carla and um that's really what
we do by being active and by singing
together is a critical mass we can make
a huge impact in the world in the
greater world so I thought that was a
really awesome idea and I know Tamar is
to you about Halle and a little bit and
I'm sure it's gonna be wonderful
so thanks sweetie laughing and I love
your participation
so anyways um I didn't want to talk too
much about kala itself so singing what
else can I talk about
so something interesting that when we
eat bread bread is really unique and
when we eat bread we're right before we
eat it we wash our hands and we say a
blessing I'm over washing our hands and
then we say a blessing over the bread
when we eat it and then afterwards when
we're all done with our meal and we're
satisfied there's another longer
blessing that we stay on it also okay so
I want to just talk about let's see how
our timer is doing sorry my Apple watch
is new so I think if I just go to the
timer button hmm I don't know let's see
it's it you can ask a what time it is -
Siri how much time is left on the timer
thanks Siri how much time is left on the
timer
okay we have nine minutes left thank you
okay
it's great learn something new every day
okay so in benching right when we bench
after the meal this is a venture that we
use in our house that we like a lot
because it has the Hebrew and it has the
English finds it right so you can see it
and for all the songs also so if you've
ever been to a shot of Steel and they're
singing songs and you don't know what it
means what they're singing it's not
translated in all adventures but in this
art scroll into a linear venture it is
okay but anyways there's one line in
benching in the very beginning right so
we say sorry Bertha Tasha I'm Alec
oenomaus autumn has done and said Oldham
Club it's about the same as I said of
Rafah me
okay and now here's a line I'm talking
about and I'm gonna hold it up so you
could see it right here
whoo where is it whoo no same last time
the whole bus our key lime crust oh okay
so that's what we're gonna talk about
that God gives bread to all living
things with compassion and I never knew
this before so I'm so happy I got to
prepare this I was looking in this
awesome book I have called power
benching and it's all about the benching
that we say and what's the meaning
behind it so apparently Moshe right
Moshe the Prophet the leader of his
Jewish people wrote this blessing of
benching when the Jews were in the
desert and it was right after the
miracle of the man so what's the miracle
of them on 3rd 3 million Jews traveling
in the desert how are we gonna eat so
miraculously God sends down from heaven
every morning a portion of Manav bread
perfectly portioned out for every person
for every family um and it was such a
miracle that there's 3 million Jews
traveling on the desert and we don't
have to plan we don't have to harvest or
mail or flower I don't know whatever
else goes into harvesting and getting
wheat and then make
the bride Merri like making the hollows
enough I can't imagine having to also
prepare the wheat and plant the wheat
but it just it comes down to us so this
this line in benching is reminding us
that Hashem that God gives us this this
bread with such great kindness and
there's a giving a little bit deeper
apparently there's three things that God
entrusts there's lots of duties got
entrust to the Angels to take care of
okay but there's three things that he
keeps for himself that God wants to take
care of himself one event is giving her
Nessa giving livelihood to people that
we should have what we need okay and why
is this so it says that if God let the
Angels take care of giving everyone
their portion of bread and so forth they
would give people what we deserve right
but guys Keely along costo in his great
kindness he gives us more than what we
deserve
he gives us not based on what we've done
wrong or right either he just gives it
to us with his kindness his outpouring
of kindness because He loves us so much
and I just thought that was such a
beautiful idea and you know we do this
benching it right Shabbos meals it's
like benching comes and not everyone
knows always what's going on or benching
and it's just so nice I think to just
continue to keep learning more of a
meaning of what we're saying all the
time okay
let's say Syria where we at Siri how
much time do we have left five minutes
okay perfect so I'm going to say one
more thing and then we're gonna play a
little game and we're gonna finish on
time so God willing
okay so gardening is something have you
noticed everyone's getting into
gardening lately I've noticed it for
sure and there's a lot of peer pressure
and it's actually been a secret
not-so-secret dream of mine to garden my
grandfather had an amazing garden I've
always wanted to but thank God we have
six little ones at home and my husband's
like sweetie you have enough on your
plate you don't need to garden also
but this year has been amazing that I've
really been able to get into gardening
more than ever before and what I love
about it is that I can work so hard I
can buy the seeds or the plants and the
soil and schlep it all and plant it and
take care of every morning I go out to
the front and I water the garden in the
front and I go out in the back and I
water the plants in the back and I see
them growing and I love it but sometimes
like yesterday my lavender plant was not
having such a good day and the past
beauties before that my basil plant was
not having today and I don't even know
if my jalapeno peppers are gonna make it
but what's so cool is that with
gardening it's so clear that I just put
in my effort I do whatever I think I'm
supposed to do I put in my proper proper
effort into it and I know the rest is in
God's hands like it's so clear
everything else let's say I go to make
dinner I go to make hallow two weeks ago
okay two weeks ago this is me being
vulnerable two weeks ago I made a lot of
challah and we gave it out to the
participants here in Denver once in a
while it happens that I let the hollow
rise too long in this stage which is why
we're gonna start the next stage soon
maybe we won't get to do a game that'll
have to be for another time but I let it
rise too long and what happened I gave
out all these beautiful colors and then
we tasted our own Hallows and it tasted
like beer they weren't sweet at all
because I let it rise too long it was so
fresh to me know what you should always
judge favorably right but the point is
that I put in my effort to make it the
best I could sometimes it's just not
going to turn out good and I could be
really mad at myself and be like I
didn't get it right I'm not successful
I'm not doing it right and I can be
really upset or I could start blaming oh
you kept me so busy with such-and-such
making a mess that I wasn't able to get
back to the table right I could do all
of that but when I garden it reminds me
that all I can do is put in my effort
and the way it turns out is not up to me
and it's really such a blessing and I'm
so grateful for that constant reminder
okay so now we're going to pretty
so we're we're good enough okay so I'm
gonna see what the saran wrappers reuse
it sailing and next we need four more
ingredients okay so this is what we're
gonna do we are going to and we're gonna
end on time okay
let's assume Lee neder we got this guy's
okay so we have three eggs you put an
egg into a plastic or glass cups you go
check it and make sure there's no blood
in it it did happen a couple weeks ago I
did a challah bake on Facebook live and
what do you know it there was blood in
one of my eggs and it doesn't happen
very often at all these days especially
when you use white eggs brown eggs
you're gonna get about 50% of them fun
facts are gonna be bloody I could tell
you from experience okay so three eggs
check next we're going to put in and
we're gonna do 1/2 a cup here we're
gonna do oh I put it down let me grab
sorry about that the oil needed slams on
counter but not onto the table okay a
half a cup of whoops of oil okay this is
how I cook you just do your best
everything else is in God's hands and
salt here's our salt we're gonna do so
using regular salt you want to use two
tablespoons if you're using kosher salt
according to the recipe use three
tablespoons okay pour in the salt and
then what I like to do is just start
mixing in the truth is I usually do this
in a look at this till ten minutes
they're doing awesome okay I usually a
few years ago probably about six years
into marriage I invested in a
mixer which was amazing cookies throwing
ingredients and it does all the hard
work for you for years I just did it by
hands and bless his heart my husband
likes homemade challah and now the kids
they like homemade Kyle I can't get away
with store-bought challah in the house
giving thumbs up it just it doesn't fly
really I'm the only one who likes it I
love store-bought kala it's delicious so
what I grew up with but not in my house
so we make homemade kala but so you
could see I'm stirring it and it's it's
not really working so much to use a
spoon anymore
because it's so thick so now my rings
now's when we just oh there's a timer
going off thanks Siri okay you're just
digging okay and you just smoosh it all
around now this stage what's gonna
happen is once you pour in the whole bag
of flour you're gonna mix it and then
once it's all mixed you're gonna notice
that it's still a little bit sticky okay
I'm it sticky what you do is you pour in
more flour maximum maximum I'd say three
cups more but it could be less than that
so don't pour it in all at once
add some mix it up and add some more if
it's still sticky but you don't want it
totally unsticky either it's yummy if
you keep it not too flowery so it
shouldn't be this sticky I good it's
gonna be this sticky but it should be a
little sticky stuff it won't be too
flowery okay yeah this is definitely too
sticky so it's nice when you have a
helper around but we're just gonna pour
it in okay just like that got some more
flour and you mix it around in you could
just feel free to stand up
it's easier standing and while the class
is going on you could just keep needing
it for a little bit once you feel like
it's all mixed together really good and
there's no chunks and there's no big
pieces of flour and just cover it up and
after the class doubling we're gonna
come back together and we're gonna do
grading tile oh it's just gonna be quick
they'll be probably let's say 15 minutes
max after the class we will bring the
silo I'll show you some fun tricks I
like to do and we'll do an egg wash and
stick it in the oven it'll make your
whole house your whole apartment
wherever you are
maybe the whole neighborhood even smell
delicious so thank you guys so much look
at that we even ended early see honey so
they just signed off okay well um it's
gonna be delicious Kyle it's just keep
mixing it thanks guys so much and I will
see you again afterwards any questions
yes we're gonna afterwards thank you for
asking
afterwards before we do the breathing we
are gonna do something really special so
even if you don't join in you should
know when you make this much flour into
challah man there's a special blessing
that you say and I'm sure tomorrow
um touch upon it if not tell you a lot
more about it um but it's a really
special thing to be able to do and
there's a lot of meaning behind it so
that's gonna be the first thing we do
you'll get to actually do in practice
what you learned about tonight which is
cool this is hands-on learning at its
best don't you think
um this is Judaism is very experiential
all these trends we've been doing this
for years guys it's really awesome and
this is what it's all about so thank you
so much and we are five minutes early
any more questions
okay if I'm even comes up with your
dough and you need how I'm feel free to
just reach out and ask happy to help
I think everyone's hands are dirty so
they can't ask any questions and get
them sauce off from you yes could be
yeah you just get it all off and then
you'll go wash your hands
you can ask away you see but it's not
all mixed well so I'm not gonna add more
flour yet just keep moving away you
don't have gardening there's so much
peer pressure it's a garden now we're
creating peer pressure to meet Carla
everyone's doing it you're just come on
McCall everyone's gonna come on like I
should make Sala - right it's actually
learning about that it really makes a
difference like all the political
science we're not getting into politics
but all the different politicians they
put their signs out in Colorado we have
voting and it is really peer pressure I
like it with who are there people
putting out and voting for I'm so
careful will you surround yourself with
you can't see our whole comment because
my hands are sticky okay let's see we're
gonna do it oh it's not touchscreen
let's see okay I'm glad you learned
something I think we should make a big
shout out to michelle has also been
showing us her her doing the tricks yeah
Michelle you're so brave I love it thank
you
it's nice that not be making it alone
like wearing it together
working hard you put in their blood
sweat and tears right no blood we don't
do that
not kosher so I haven't made I made fall
in years but I'm making mine gluten-free
so I'm gonna see how it turns out I'm
not really sure but I think this is very
helpful I don't think I've ever made
holo before so if I have it was like you
said in preschool okay awesome so you
did the same recipe you're just using
gluten-free flour yep same recipe just
using a one-for-one gluten-free flour
instead of regular flour that's awesome
I don't love to hear hands out I'm
definitely you know that would be so
cool whenever we have gluten-free guests
and I actually go ahead and make
gluten-free Kalla it's a whole different
recipe and it has all these ingredients
thanks to go by to be able to make it
like this yeah I'll definitely let you
know the the flour I buy is out of North
Dakota and it's a one for one
substitution and ever anything else I've
ever baked so we'll see if it works
awesome thank you thanks Michelle and
our dough here you see it's almost ready
so it really was you can make holida in
less than thirty minutes and fifteen of
those minutes you'll just be sitting and
waiting and it works so simple just
gotta do it so thanks guys
alright so thank you everyone for
joining us like to welcome you to this
week's Shabbat table
I am hello captain Steen from Columbus
Ohio with the Columbus community coles
young professional outreach department
it's so nice to be back over here as we
see so many people all around the
country and for this week's spotlight we
would like to turn it over to Mimi primo
from Vegas please give your attention to
Mimi are you there can you unmute oh hi
everyone good evening my name is me and
crémeux I live in Henderson which is
right next to Las Vegas I am originally
from California and Las Vegas Jewish
experience which is headed by rabbis
Cutler and
Israeli out here has been a really big
part of my life I heard about this
Shabbat table from them and it's a
really great opportunity coming here
every Thursday night to meet with meet
and greet and learn with rabbis and
young professionals from all over the
world
well country world maybe so I want to
thank you I wanted to speak a little bit
about the parsha for this week something
that really touches my heart is the
presence of challah
we learned about the fact that you
should separate separate from the
challah which is basically a gift back
to Hashem we have bread because of
Hashem and all that Hashem asked is that
we give a little bit of the bread that
we he gave us back to him which is
excellent you know I was a little scared
about doing that when I was younger I
watched my Bubbe and my mom make
separated challah and I said I am going
to mess this up I will never ever do it
but then I thought you know it's Hashem
s so little he asks for just a little
bit and I should not be so scared in
give that little bit back and then I
never looked back from separating caller
from now from then and alakina challah
as well as you fulfilling a mitzvah in
doing so so I hope these words inspired
you have a great Shabbos thank you thank
you so much me we appreciate that and
make sure to send my best to Rabbi
cutler and thank you for sharing that
with us so tonight we have an incredible
speaker this is tomorrow
Livingston from Rage Baltimore we're
here I have heard that through the
grapevine we got a loaded one tonight be
lots of great stuff so without any
further ado everyone please give your
undivided attention to mrs. Tamar
Livingston thank you so much for having
me so nice to be here with all of you so
I was asked to speak about makalah which
is a really fun topic to speak about
because I think that when you just say
the word challah you start salivating
right you can taste it you can smell it
you smell that heavenly scent that seems
to like stay in your house even for
more than a day after you bake it it's
delicious it just lingers you know
whether you like it more Ron gooey on
the inside or whether you like it more
baked on fluffy whether you like it more
dense and rich or whether you prefer a
water challah I don't know anyone who
doesn't love challah right it ranks
right up there just like matzo ball soup
you know in our family we sometimes
sprinkle cinnamon and sugar on top
sometimes we sprinkle it with chocolate
chips sometimes we use the Trader Joe's
everything but the bagel spice no matter
what we put on it it is always delicious
right
and then don't even get me started about
French toast right we have french toast
which is so young but challah french
toast is like a whole different level
right so what's the secret what is it
that makes challah so much better than
bread it's like in the league of its own
so I hope you'll join me on the journey
to uncovering what makes challah so
delicious and why it's such an integral
part of Shabbos impact it's so integral
that we even have two lobes of challah
at each meal so I know that many of you
on the line tonight are young
professionals and and even older than
that so many of you are working right
how many of you get vacation days at
your jobs you could feel free to chime
in and the chat if you'd like and if you
get vacation days at work okay some of
you get vacation days that's great
what happens if you need some more time
off
oh here's someone think they don't get
enough vacation four hours over two
weeks yeah that's not a lot I totally
get that what happens if you need more
time off after you used your vacation
days so let's say you have 10 vacation
days and you've used all ten of them but
you know you have a siblings wedding or
you know your best friends getting
married
something that you really can't miss
what happens what do you do right you
have this big dilemma doing this out on
work right do I risk like not getting
paid because I have to go to this
wedding or
do I say okay I can't make it to this
wedding because I really like it can't
afford to take the time off I literally
won't get paid I just can't afford to go
to the wedding and take time off of work
right sometimes we have those dilemmas
and you know our ancestors could relate
to this as well because you see the
workweek was invented thousands of years
ago when we were traveling in the desert
after we were freed from slavery you
know are hundreds long year slavery in
Egypt
Hashem took us on a journey through the
desert in order to help us shake the
slave mentality
he didn't just take us out of slavery
and then take us straight away into the
Promised Land but instead he took us
through a process and a journey through
a process and a journey in the desert
where he was going to like nurse us back
to health so to speak right he was gonna
help us shake that slave mentality that
we know is really hard to shake you know
it's not just about becoming physically
free but it's about becoming mentally
and emotionally free as well so Hashem
gave us this time in the desert to help
us through this process to help us come
about and he did different things with
us so that we could really become free
and tap into our sense of self and
really experience liberation again so
you know today we think we have it made
because we have ubereats and GrubHub
but we could just get food delivered
whenever we want I'm sure many of us are
doing that you know especially now
during corona when were home we're
ordering food deliveries and we just
have it so convenient but actually the
Jews in the desert had it way better
one of the kindnesses that Hashem did
for them when he when we were in the
desert is that he sent us our food from
heaven every single day so imagine
literally having food that was
heaven-sent you didn't need to order it
you didn't need to pay for it it just
came down you walked outside and it was
there and this was of course the Mun or
the manna in English and it was this was
how it was every single day we went
outside and the Mun was there it just
came down from the skies it was
unbelievable but the man had some rules
along with it one of the rules with the
Mun was that every day we had to go out
to the field to collect
and we could only collect what we needed
for that particular day right so we
couldn't hoard any and then try to take
it easy the next day we couldn't pretend
we were in a pandemic and stock up on
toilet paper you know and buy 500 rolls
more than we really need we couldn't try
to overwork or put in more hours one day
you know thinking that we'll get paid
overtime and then we'll be able to sleep
in the next day there was none of that
we had to show up to work each and every
day and we also earned a salary each and
every day every day we went out to the
field and every day our food was there
and we had to collect it and take it
home in fact there was even a miracle
that happened that if we tried to
outsmart the system and take home more
food than we needed and leave it over
for the next day you know if we tried to
store it in the fridge or put it in the
freezer or hide it in the cabinets in
our pantry it actually became infested
with worms and was totally inedible the
next day so there was no such thing as
stockpiling it just didn't work it
didn't pay off another rule that had to
do with the man was that every Shabbat
was a forced vacation they were told
that on Shabbat there would be no Mun
there would be nothing in the field to
collect it couldn't go out there and
gather their food they could not go to
work so before you get excited thinking
about how fun it would be you know to be
told not to show up at work think about
how you would feel if your boss told you
that one day a week you were not allowed
to come to work you just were not
allowed in right some of us are
experiencing that now and the pandemic
that we have reduced hours we've been
furloughed right many people are
experiencing that shortage and it it
doesn't feel good right we might have
thought that it feels so good to have a
vacation but a forced vacation actually
doesn't feel that nice in addition many
of us are feeling really anxious with
this forced vacation great
we're anxious about our salary how are
we gonna have enough money how are we
gonna pay our bills how are we gonna be
able to take care about like all of our
expenses what am I gonna do about my
student loans I was counting on this
income
care of that it's really stressful to
have a horse vacation it doesn't feel
all that good now to make matters worse
remember that when our ancestors were
told to take this forest vacation in the
desert they were coming off of over 200
years of slavery they were totally
immersed in slave mentality so they had
just experienced so many years of abuse
and torture as slaves how in the world
were they supposed to feel about their
boss you know their new master who just
told them not to come to work how are
they supposed to what what do you think
they fought you know here they are
they're probably reliving of their
trauma that oh my gosh it's happening
again we're either getting fired or
we're gonna be beaten for not showing up
at work we're gonna be tricked but how
are we being told not to come out and
collect our food is he trying to starve
us is he trying to torture us in a worse
way than we were tortured in Egypt
what's going on right how how could they
have been reassured that they would get
a salary for not showing up at work how
are they were supposed how are they
supposed to relate to this forced
vacation without being anxious right
what would help you feel relaxed and
reassured with a forced vacation what
would make you feel good if your boss
told you don't show up at work tomorrow
what would you do to manage that panic
and that anxiety and remember Hashem was
also trying to purposely help us break
the slave mentality so he had to really
work hard to give us the message that we
weren't slaves anymore so what he
decided to do was something really
really genius and really really kind and
loving he decided to front the Jews the
money imagine if your boss said to you
you know what don't show up at work
tomorrow but you'll still get paid how
would you feel then would you feel
relaxed maybe yes maybe no right it sort
of depends on who your boss was if it
was the boss that you knew and you had a
relationship with for a long time you
might feel like okay he said he's gonna
pay me tomorrow
I trust him I know he will but if it was
an
employer and this was a new job you
might not really have that confidence
that he's really gonna pay you for the
time off like he's telling you right you
don't have that relationship with him
you don't have that level of trust and
knowledge that he really as a man is
gonna keep his word so to the Jews they
didn't really have that level of trust
in Hashem yet there were slaves in Egypt
for so long they didn't really know how
to trust and had a think that life could
really be better than what they had
experienced for the past you know many
years in slavery so Hashem not only told
them that they were gonna get paid for
their forest vacation he decided to
front them the money he gave them a
direct deposit in their bank account
before the vacation doesn't that sound
nice so what that meant was that on
every Friday Hashem said two portions of
the month so that they could collect a
portion for Friday and a portion for
Shabbat that way on Friday they already
had the reassurance and it could sleep
easy that their salary was already there
they already had enough money in the
bank
so that they didn't have to work in the
field on Shabbat so I know you guys are
learning a whole series of Shabbat have
you learned about kaduche yet yeah I'm
seeing some nods okay great
so we actually see this referenced in
the key Jewish I'm gonna read for you
the verse that Hebrew and now translated
into English in Exodus it says ashishot
umhum asan Hashem Hashem I am the
authority on that call assure bomb
Vienna biome ha ve alkane Vera Hashem at
the Omaha Shabbat by cachet that might
sound familiar to some of you after
learning the kaduche in English it means
that in six days Hashem made the heavens
and the earth and the Seas and all
that's in them and he rested on the
seventh day therefore Hashem blessed the
Sabbath day and he sanctified it so in
Hebrew its value VAR if Hashem blessed
the Sabbath day but you can't show you
and he sanctified it so Jewish wisdom
teaches us that what is the blessing of
the Shabbat day what does it mean that
has shown blessed the Shabbat day so
Jewish wisdom explains that the blessed
of Shabbat is that he brought this
double portion of the man on Friday he
sent a double salary on Friday so that
the Jews would not have to work on
Shabbat that sounds nice but it's also
really confusing if you think about it
because if the double portion was given
on Friday why does that make Shabbat
blessed if anything it sounds like
Friday is a blessed day it's the day we
got paid twice what does this have to do
with blessing Shabbat so the Jewish
wisdom explains that Hashem could have
just given them this forced vacation and
he could have promised that he would pay
them but the fact that he gave them the
salary on Friday that he let them go to
sleep easy with this reassurance to wake
up on Saturday morning knowing that they
didn't have to go to work because they
already got paid that's the blessing of
Shabbat the blessing of Shabbat is the
love and the reassurance that is hand
delivered in the Mun on Friday the
blessing of Shabbat is the reassurance
that we don't need to work on Shabbat
that we're not gonna lack anything by
keeping Shabbat but we can take off
every single week from our jobs and we
won't be missing anything that our
fridge will still be full and our pantry
will still be full and our bank account
will still have money and we'll still
have our self-worth and we'll still have
our identities even when we take time
off from going to work so because we
have this blessing of receiving this
double portion on Friday so that our
Shabbat could be relaxed and could be we
can spend Shabbat just focusing on being
instead of doing this is the blessing of
Shabbat and this is why we have to
college at every Shabbat meal in honor
of the two portions of maan that we were
given the two portions of sustenance
that felt to keep us nurtured
and so this blessing of reassurance and
love is literally kneaded into all of
our loaves of challah and I think
perhaps that's why our phallus tastes so
so sublime so much better than any loaf
of bread you could find anywhere else
because kneaded into it is the love that
is sent directly from God reassuring us
that it's okay we can take it easy on
Shabbat we can learn to rest we can stop
the chase of going to work all the time
and pursuing our careers and pursuing
the next thing and the next thing and
the next thing we can take the time off
and enjoy the beauty and the
deliciousness of the sustenance and the
knowledge that a Shem is always taking
care of us so perhaps we could spend a
little bit of time I think you guys are
maybe going into breakout rooms or
having some discussion over the next
portion perhaps we could spend some time
reflecting on our lives and thinking
about you know how many hours a day do
we work at our jobs how many hours a day
do we spend checking our phone whether
it's for emails or social media or even
making phone calls how many times a day
do we spend talking how much time a day
do we spend watching Netflix or playing
video games how much time a day how much
time a day do we spend moving just in
motion and then asking ourselves why are
we spending so much time doing all of
those things you know many of those
things are great and healthy but just
thinking for ourselves about why getting
deeper with ourselves and so the reason
that we're doing all of those things and
then I'd love if you could ask yourself
how many minutes a day are you silent
how many minutes a day are you actually
still how many minutes a day are you
calm and think about why if that number
is high why is it high the numbers low
why is it low the numbers non-existent
why does it not exist and then take a
look and think about if we're proud of
all the things we're spending our time
doing
have we ever even thought about that
before have we even ever asked ourselves
if we're proud of all the things we
spend our time doing do we ever get
frustrated that we're so busy I think we
can use this opportunity to really
reflect on the busyness in our lives all
the work that we do during the six days
and trying to carve out space for how
for maybe some calmness maybe for some
time where we don't need to work and we
can relax in the reassurance that we
have from God that he sends us every
week knowing that we're gonna be okay
even if we take some time off you know
brené Brown who I love says so
beautifully that exhaustion is not a
status symbol and productivity does not
equal self-worth and I think this is so
true in our day and age where we really
need to remind ourselves that we don't
need to run ourselves ragged and to be
exhausted in order to feel that we're
worthy that taking a day off taking some
really necessary time for rejuvenation
and rest does not make us less than if
anything it enhances us psychiatric
research really proves that rest and
rejuvenation are essential to our health
just like nutrition and exercise right
it helps foster joy it enhances our
creativity it shapes our brain in a
different way so we're blessed as Jews
that were really given the opportunity
to practice and to cultivate calmness
every single week it's built into the
fabric of our lives and I think and I
hope that you'll find that when you
start practicing calmness you realize
how contagious it is and that it's
something that we just need to keep
plugging into on a regular basis we need
to spend the time during the week
working and we need to spend the time on
shabbat resting and practicing calmness
and rest and really cultivating that
different perspective that we get when
we stop doing and we just get to be
so this is the blessing that's wrapped
up into our delicious hollow loaves so I
hope that as you guys need your Hollis
shortly you'll think about these
messages and try to remind yourself as
you're kneading your dough what Hashem
needed into the original dough that he
sent down when he sent them on all of
that love and reassurance that it's okay
to take a break and you'll need that
into your own kala so that you could tap
into it in your life as well we are now
going to consider all those who are
doing the follow bake we will have that
continuing mrs. Sarah wolf all the way
from Denver Colorado I believe we'll be
continuing the holiday park and if
you're not during this holiday park
hopefully tomorrow night you'll join me
with the challah consumption part at
least in any event mrs. wolf are you
there you like to take it away
awesome it's good to making Kahlo with
you guys tonight so earlier we made the
dough we made the dough in 30 minutes so
when I make kala it's really hard to do
without my kids because they love making
challah
so this wasn't the plan but sometimes we
just have to be flexible right okay so
the first thing is we in a lot of
called--oh sweet use actually a little
bit more solid oh then you actually
there's a special thing that you do and
it could be that you guys just talked
all about it you know your hands you
talk about the blessing we make over the
challah I don't see any that's a night
okay okay so there's a really special
thing that we do is we say a blessing
over challah
so why do we say a blessing there's a
common misconception the kosher for
example right is the rabbi blesses the
food and it's not true
and that's not what we do with the
challah what we do is we're knowledge
and even though it's relatively simple
to make the dough it takes less than 30
minutes effort goes into it and you have
to go to the store or do pick up
I forget the ingredients and you take
off yeah we're going to college soon you
take off a piece of the dough to
acknowledge just like gardening we
talked about earlier even though I work
so hard and put so much into this I'm
acknowledging that everything doesn't
come from me and my own strength and
power it comes from God right just like
gardening you could do all the right
things you could water it put in the
seeds get fresh soil sometimes it just
doesn't work does anyone know that from
experience
I do it's such a good reminder that at
the end of the day he's in charge and
our success is not based on him so if
your pilot doesn't come out perfect also
you should just know he's in charge you
just try and try again and it might be
better next time okay but Michele you're
telling me awesome and I'm so excited to
hear about it okay so I have a dog here
and what we're gonna do before we start
breeding in it so we have one step we're
gonna do lucky my kids come home every
kid that goes to preschool here in
Denver um makes this beautiful hala
blessing card for me that I use this you
have a nice poem on the back so there's
a special blessing that we say that's
acknowledging that it all comes from God
and we take a piece out as if we're like
giving back right because if you work so
hard on something then like you want the
whole thing for yourself and there's so
much so much satisfaction so by taking a
piece out I'm saying it's like
managing it's really from okay you took
a piece okay so what I'm gonna do
actually goes a little bit sticky so I'm
just going to take a piece of my plastic
wrap and I'm gonna just lift it off like
that and okay so um okay so one more
thing say the blessing I'm gonna tell
you what the blessing is but also so
it's a really special time to ask people
you love for anyone whether it's health
find a spouse to have success I make the
lively that we should all have
tremendous blessing in our lives so I'm
gonna have in mind some people that I
want to have in mind and pray for and
you should similarly have it mimes
whoever you would like to have in mind
and I'm gonna say this blessing and it
would be really meaningful to me if when
I say the blessing afterwards everyone
could answer on the enum feel free to
unmute yourself to do so I think that
would be a really cool powerful just to
show how we're all in this together okay
so ready I'm going to do this and
Michelle feel free back do this with me
M&S the blessing and then once you're
here sometime and then I'm going to take
a piece of cloud but okay so after I say
the blessing I wanna hear big on me okay
ready nice yeah bah bah bah
I don't know I love he knew melech
ha-olam asher kid shine up an explosive
receive our new and
I was just gonna breathe how where's
yours I'm gonna give you a holler okay
so now that we did that we can take it
apart okay so I'm gonna just show you
some tips look at what this palette so
we have the Apollo depending on how much
my in-laws we're gonna eat a bunch maybe
put some in the freezer it's a tiny bit
sticky but it's okay if it's a little
bit sticky Michelle your dough is
looking awesome that is so cool okay so
there's different ways to breed and
there's different ways I'm just going to
show you my favorite way simply because
it comes out really nice it beats evenly
[Music]
okay so just take a little bit of house
I don't want to make it too flowery I
take a little bit of flour okay and I
just roll it quickly to show you into
four I'm going to teach you a for Brady
hey nothing just Ricky simple you could
do it on your own it's just a nice
little upgrade from the three threes
also garden totally totally practical
just got my hair okay okay
so here's so I'm going to show you okay
so everyone does it differently it
doesn't have to be super smooth they're
perfect it could be some people make a
spinner in sector so make them to say no
and okay so I have them make four
now the first four braids what you do is
it's a practice with my hair I love it
okay so close okay
way to be resourceful okay
you have four so you do under over under
over or maybe over under let's see yeah
over I take the first one I always start
from the same side I go over number two
I pick number three under and then I go
across and over number four okay then I
start from the same side and I do it
again over this is the new number two
picked up the number three and just
continue you have a cobbler okay so I'm
just gonna tell you also um my recipe
[Music]
okay so um the recipe for egg wash that
I do okay um in a plastic cup I do one
egg and I add a little bit of water a
squirt of honey and a sprinkle of
cinnamon okay most people just do add
your egg and water but I like to add
those other ingredients it adds a little
extra touch of yumminess and um you just
spread it over the challah
I put it on parchment paper I'm Tam
stick it in the oven for I'm 350 for
four depending on the size of the loaf
this one might be like 40 minutes if you
made small ones it could be 2025 minutes
it's not gonna turn super dark brown
like store-bought challah what you're
gonna do and it's in the oven is no it's
not pink either
you flip it over on the bottom when you
tap on the bottom okay so that's how you
do the over-under over-under you always
start from the side and that's the only
time where you share the love and it's
been so fun doing this with you thank
you so much for joining
