The Shabbat Show - Episode 9: The Kiddush Edition

[Music] hello everybody welcome to another episode of bring Shabbat home welcome back for those that are joining us again it is an honor to have you back with us what an opportunity that we have week after week to do this together to mark this time in our calendars it's time which we bring Shabbat in together as one nation across the world it's nanami back with you again and I hope we get to keep on doing this like I say up until we get to see each other live in the holy city of Jerusalem we've got a great episode for you today we're gonna be talking about kiddush each week we're gonna try to take different pieces of this incredible Shabbat experience because nothing that we do is stop we don't you don't we don't do anything just because there's no aspect of Judaism that has elastic throughout the generations just because we get it each thing that we're doing especially on Friday night which is a night that is filled with meaning each thing we're doing has lots and lots of incredible purpose and unique and the more we learn about it the more it makes it more meaningful for us last week for those that tuned in we spoke a lot about challah check out the episodes for those who are coming in out for the first time in today we're gonna be going up to kiddush and this is what we're gonna be talking about why do we start with wine why do we begin this entire journey into the spiritual world of Shabbat with wine what's the reason by the way wine is everywhere in Judaism why do we bring it into the bris try to bring into the wedding why do we always seem to have wine everywhere we do everywhere we go so that's what they'll be talking about today lots of different opportunities and opinions he has like I said like we did it last week I'll say I'll save mine to the end and I'll share with you what kiddush means to me and how kiddush can change not only our weeks but our lives we've got an incredible show today's show is dedicated for the refueling for the speedy Russell go bound to the show hi welcome everyone Thank You charlie so I've been talking to a lot of people recently and they've been complaining to me that they have not been able to sleep well since coded nineteen entered our world about three months ago except they tell me for Friday nights somehow they're able to sleep on Friday night so what's that about so I believe that the answer actually lies in kiddush and it's not just because they're drinking a cup of wine before a good type it's much more than that so if I were to ask you to translate the word kiddush you would probably lock in the english translation and tell me the word holy that we really lose a lot of meaning when we translate especially the divine language so let's take a closer look if we take the word kiddush we really see the three root letters of couthe valid where means set apart exclusive different we are referred to as the armed Kadosh a nation that is set apart we're different we have a different relationship with God we also use this same word for marriage keep douching which is a different relationship than any other exclusive and it's unlike anyone else so when we pick up our cup of wine and we make kiddush before we do anything else before we partake in our beautiful meal we're saying two very important things one is before we begin anything we need to set the record straight we are different and this whole relationship that we have with Hashem is different Shem gave us something called Shabbos and he gave it only to us and second that this day is completely different than any other day in fact everything that we're about to do for the next 24 hours is completely different this is not like a Monday night dinner or a Tuesday night dinner the actions the motions that we're taking and making might look the same or eating or drinking talking or serving but there's actually nothing about it that is the same because everything that we're doing is layered with depth and meaning it's showing our commitment it's layered with what I call the Shabbos consciousness so what's that so we know that all around the world whatever culture before we begin the meal every family starts by singing Shalom Aleichem and there's a beautiful idea that the angels come and join us before we begin our meal and we sing four verses the first one is welcome the second coming the third bless us and the last and final verse we say is a Spanglish of which really means goodbye we escort them to the door now imagine if a few dignitaries I'm too busy and they look in and you say welcome come in and you even ask them for some advice or from some help and then they look around they see that your table is beautifully set and you're about to sit down to meal and then you say okay bye-bye it was nice getting to know you and you walked them to the door it seems a little rude it seems a little strange why are we not inviting them to stay for the whole night so Sato cups of Blin explains he compares this to a bride and a groom on their wedding day right after the wedding ceremony under the chuppah they say Mazel Tov to everybody and then they go into a private room we call this the hood it's a place where nobody else comes in exclusively there's because they take the first few minutes of their married life to celebrate together that they're in a new community relationship and no one else is invited and he says this is the same thing it's very nice that the Angels want to visit but now we need to escort them out the door because we're about to celebrate our exclusive relationship with Hashem who gave us this beautiful 25 hour period called Shabbat and that is the difference between a Monday night dinner and a Friday night dinner Friday night dinner is like your wedding meal it's not about the food it's about what you're celebrating with the food and a Monday night dinner is about the food so it's as if when we sit down to this meal tonight we're saying Hashem master of the world the most powerful person is inviting me to travel with him on his private jet how fortunate are we and there's an inner calmness that descends the moment we light those candles and it comes from knowing this knowing that we're being taken care of by whom as we stayed in kiddush by the creator of the world he's got this he's in control we don't have to worry we could completely let go and enjoy our quality time with the person that wants to be with us and that brings true Manuka that's true peace of mind so when we're holding that Cup tonight and we're pronouncing like I - I'm so which means that Hashem himself said this day apart and we have to know what's our job if he said it apart what are we doing we're doing the same thing we also have to make is day completely different so I want each one of you to think how can I make this day look feel and be so different than any other day in my home I eat different foods I wear different clothing I use different dishes perhaps that you even eat in a different room or use a different tablecloth my activities that I'm gonna do are gonna be different even my conversation is going to be different so as we hear the words of kiddush tonight let us delight in this day that is so different than any other and hopefully we'll all be able to sleep really well knowing that we're in the best of hands it different platforms it's an honor to be here I got to tell you what makes this so exciting is that we're together this is the joy this is the beauty there's nothing better I could tell you sometimes I hope I could do this again I really do but you know in the old days when I mean the old is I mean like three months ago I used to travel every once in a while and I got to tell you there was something it's up there something very disruptive when you travel especially when you travel alone for Shabbat you meet your family leave your community you leave your shul you leave your way and I always feel and it never gets old I feel uncomfortable when I go someplace new for Shabbat and then I go to the person's home and it sort of smells very similar to my home and I see the challah and I see the kiddush and I'm like wait I don't really we don't live next to each other but we're doing the same stuff and I go to shul and I open up the same sitter and they say the same words and almost every single time there's this feeling that I feel I'm in a brand new community I may or may not know my host I may or may not know the people in the shul but I'm home that's what it means to be a Jew that's what we're doing here we're celebrating this together because we're one and where you're from we're doing the same stuff because God wants us to realize that as far as he stretches us that our core we're still the same and the one of the ways in which we recognize that is through the rituals that we do every Shabbat in one of the rituals of courses is Kadish and we'll talk about it throughout the time but there's one word that I want to talk about now because there's a music video that speaks about and that knew that that word is lehayim you hear that a lot lehayim before you drink wine you say lehayim why it's a lot of reasons and I want to give you one if you remember wine wine goes both ways there are some people that use wine to to escape to distract to be less some people get used wine and what comes out of them is a lower version of themselves they say things they shouldn't say they do things they shouldn't do they act in ways I shouldn't act wine has a way of taking people down sometimes in fact according to some opinions it was the grapes that Adam sinned on when Noah when Noah entered into when the ark rested he came out and he planted a vineyard and some say was printed the - to escape of what he's something that he just recognized the world as opposed to take it on and to rebuild it wine goes both ways you can use to bring you down or use it to lift you up you can use it to make you feel differently you can use it to enhance things when you drink wine what we do is we say the word lehayim because what we're saying is we want this wine we want the use of what we do to be for life life doesn't mean just that we live a long life life we means that we're tapping into the essence of life we want it to be for prosperity for health for happiness for spirituality for connection when you have a substance that can go one or the other way we begin to remind ourselves but you know what I'm drinking this for to be bigger to enjoy more to make kiddush to sanctify what I have and so the word I am reminds us to enjoy reminds us to go deeper reminds us to recognize that God wants us to connect and the spiritual world doesn't take us away from physical it elevates physical the word Lahaina reminds us that spirituality is only the elevation of the world that we want and whatever we do and whatever substance we have we should elevate it and so whatever we do next now when we drink we should have a low high and but a high and really so that me and you live lives that are even greater the wine is representative of that and I want to great program at the both of you are involved in its cold sister-to-sister candle lighting initiative what is this sister just a candlelight initiative and how did you get involved with it it's an initiative to help women develop a ritual or a habit to start to light candles and encouraged me to start lighting candles whether I was by myself or with my family and it gave me some kind of a purpose so it includes a free set of candles for a whole year candle holders and a blessing card so it was just a really wonderful gift to get and and I got one for myself and I also was encouraged to to take one or two home and I did for my grown daughter which got her lighting candles and for a very close friend of mine that's amazing so what is candle lighting mean to you and how has it impacted you and since you started getting involved well it did it gave me a purpose and an appreciation for lighting candles because I'm a single mom but my kids are grown and not in the house so I didn't really feel like there was any purpose for Pina just light off by myself but I started to and it just gave me a special time where I could just be by myself and reflect and have a conversation and and now I'm able to share it with other people so my initiative that was passed on to me has now encouraged other people to appreciate and do the same thing amazing and Karen I understand that you were instrumental with with Beth the two you guys did this together how has the program impacted you and how has your relationship with Beth and others made a difference in your life it's been really meaningful to me Beth and I have known each other for a number of years kind of on a peripheral basis through mutual friends and then we are connected forever because we went on the j-wro key trip in on separate trips but we've had different events where we've been brought together again and we got to know each other better and I have a class here that I host at my house and Beth has it gets the award for the thing they you know most attendants and and so she was just someone when I heard about the program I we went to the brunch I heard about the program and she was someone that I just thought she popped right into my mind and I thought this would be a really nice way to connect with her on this level and she was she was already lighting candles but it just kind of further cemented our relationship and it's just it's just been really special to see her and you know we got we've gotten two coffees there and try to do other things you know as our relationship is has grown so it's very nice and I and I just want to share I just heard a beautiful message from this guy named Charlie Harare today actually about lighting the candle from the bottom it was like you know I'm like you you got to be kidding here it is right here um and that's and that's how I feel is that you say you know you like the or not you specifically you know we heard this from from my Shoshone but too late the cannon from the bottom and watch the flame grow and and that's how I feel this program is is that you can really light someone else's flame and and then they she's taking it you know to another level by introducing it to her friend and her and her daughter and you know you just don't you don't know who you can reach out to and what kind of impact they can make you know just by just by reaching out and lighting someone's clean well how inspiring for those that are interested whether you are a regular lighter or a not regular lighter you get you I guess this program is a great back a very long time so J thanks for joining us on the show and you tend to some great information and we're actually gonna play it and you know you hear so much I've been with you on programs where you start going on wines and the next thing you know everyone leaves the classes where is everybody like there's six options for classes and there's like an entire crowd around you J so if you have never been on a program with J before you you're missing out on watching what he can do and how he brings wine to the people and having your knowledge but what I what I was thinking of doing today is try to get from you an understanding of how to enjoy the wine we are at we have a program of thousands of people that are watching right now and they're gonna in a couple of you know an hour - or you know they're gonna sit at their table and they're gonna drink wine so can you help us figure out how to enjoy it more how to delve into it more what do we have to do to do that okay so real quick I heard from Yoko Solomon a long time ago that if you want to really get the most pleasure at Ally and that's what God wants from us just follow the rule book and our rule book of course is the Torah of course is the holy book you know but the same is true of almost anything art science but certainly of wine and I'm gonna give you a quick 5-minute make every I'm sorry two-minute make everybody wine expert tasters in just two minutes and that is all you have to do is remember the five s's and for this i'm using the best wine that saw goat makes it's called peak and all you have to do is remember the five essence the first s is the SMI wineglass hold on a second I'm using a different wine I'm using have you heard of the Marah the cave sure let me buy my close friend Josh Brodie nobody loves you you who dropped it off for my son's Bar Mitzvah okay I'm ready to roll okay so the first thing you do is you is the s5s is remember first yes of sight take the wine let you leave it in the glass and put it against the white background okay all right and know the color so it could be anything from purple which is a very young wine to a kind of bricky Brown which means that it's kind of at the end of its life so that's the first s and if it's a nice color what you're looking for is color and clarity make sure nothing's floating around the second s is the s of swirl okay so I'm going to swirl the wine and the reason you do the s of swirl is so that you can aerate the wine so that you can have more of the wine surface being touched by the air and that's important because you want to do the third S which is the S of smell and you put your nice little everybody put your nice little Jewish noses in a glass and what you're looking for our aromas that are beautiful and that you recognize so it could be vanilla from the oak that the wine spends time in or it could be alcohol but in balance with fruit that the wine is of grape so you get that so remember first as the S of sight second yes the S of swirl third s is the second of swirl third STS of smell fourth s is the S of savor and we have God gave us this wonderful thing called a tongue and it's got all kinds of taste buds all over it and if you really want to get the most flavor out of your wine and food for that matter to involve your what we call in wine speak your palate but it really doesn't mean the up side of your palate it means your tongue so here's how you do it Wow what a difference that makes and just slipping it straight down and going straight to the back all of your palate becomes alive with flavor and so if you follow the rules like we do okay it doesn't hold you back it actually increases the pleasure and finally it's the less S which is the S of spit or swallow and we want to do yes of swallow today and the important s of swallow is to see how long it lasts does it continue to be with you for a bit more than just that little sip so if you follow the five SS sight swirl smell savor and swallow or spit you're gonna get much more pleasure out of it well hi I'm to everybody I made the brachot before him but this is the wine I'm gonna be using for kiddush tonight little time wife nama stumbled upon something unbelievable a 25 hundred year old cave dating back to the time of the great Jewish revolt against the Romans we've been arriving then we felt something strange other than our car and we found the ancient cave the cave was full with mud almost to the top so we need to dig and in this very cave they uncovered something even more astonishing an ancient gold coin from 67c II when the Land of Israel was under Roman rule tried to kick him out to fight for the freedom and you can see on one side of the coin it's amphora it's a wine bottle on the other side it's a wine leaf and it's available in ancient hebrew for the freedom of Zion so crazy is that you were already in the process of building your own winery here and then you find this coin that basically says your ancestors were doing exactly the same thing 2,000 years ago after we found a cave we understood this is our legacy this cave has become home to one of Israel's most famous wineries so good which was chosen as Israel's top wine producer in 2018 [Music] this is just part of the circle vineyards they're located in the chalky terraces of the Nemean region in Judea and Samaria every single bottle Segel wine is imprinted with an exact replica of the coin that Yaakov and nama found today we're producing more than 300,000 barrels about 70 percent of our production go to export it's maybe the biggest in Israel so the majority of what we're seeing here right now is actually going to be consumed abroad straight from today and some if you really want it taste easily if you want to taste Judea and Samaria you want to test the land that's the way to do it so if you can take a look this is that stone this is the ancient wine press you can see a hole just feel one flow right there is one hole here and mono rear they lift up the stone I can show you the stone yeah it's put awake here and all the wine used to go down here here you can about 200 liters can stay there and ferment for mint exactly today tourists from around the world come to beg go to see the historical landscape take part in guided tours and of course during some very fine wine and the best part is that it's just a 15-minute drive from Jerusalem well we're just standing it's a good newest winery it's going to be ready in two weeks you built it purposely with the idea of having this view right of the Jerusalem Hills behind you yes why is that the case listen my passion most of the Bible stories happened around us really here long before Jews are the most existing stories about Abraham Isaac Jacob how forefathers from here you can see the Jordan Valley you can see the Dead Sea used to be the beginning the house of King sold our first King and a lot of the stories about him soul happened here so as you're going to be drinking your wine from this very area you're gonna be able to have a view straight into the history of Israel yes yes this is the heart the heart of the land of his own both mm tears that length was desert nothing was growing you everybody tried nobody succeed we believe that part of the miracle of Israel it's not just that we the Jewish people came back to our homeland also the land came back to us and I think this is what mine represents what vines represent the story oops I got is the story of the Jewish people okay I don't know about you but now that Jake gave us a over to our children there is nothing on earth like Shabbat there is nothing now he was saying this pre-internet priests cell phones pre all these things when we started catching on well if I could put my phone away for day that would be amazing if I could he was saying this because because it's true no matter what's happening in the world there was nothing on earth like Shabbat so now about kaduche of Shabbat it's so big my son's life was saved it's story for a different time my son's life was saved through kaduche on Shabbat my my my daughter's life was saved through about all so it's it's a wild story for a different time but I'm very very very connected I haven't been hiding I I've had the past 13 years since the day I've been married that we buy two bottles of wine every single Shabbat and that's how their lives got saved for a different time but there's one amazing thing that the safar them the Moroccans in particular Jews do every single Friday night on all kaduche we make the bra how we make the blessing on the the sanctity of the night and we look at our own reflection this is an amazing idea we look at our own reflection in the cup and we sit there staring at ourselves for a second I want to tell you why the Zohar the birthplace of Kabbalah says why did God create the world in six days he could have done it in a minute why six days what happened in six days so in the minute we have mishnev we have attracted that takes care of that we're not gonna take care of that right now but what happened why not a week why not ten days what was six days what happened right then what happened right then is something unbelievable man was created and the second God saw man he said done this is what I want to sit with the rest of eternity this is what I created everything for was just to sit with this was just to sit with this man so we such Shabbat and we don't work and we don't do anything for one reason to remember I'm not in control here my son I I had a great thing for my son he used to run around the house um used to grab when I was living in Israel from my social so much when I was living in Israel he used to go grab his like little men'she toys they say many little men little local men and he would bring them out of his room and line them up on the coffee table and he was such a lining him up line he was very serious so one time I'm sitting on the couch watching him do this I moved one of the guys out of the way and he came running back in and he saw it and he put it back and he looked at me and they weren't running back into his room and I was like it's so amazing how serious he's taking this like this is this is the most important thing that's going on in the world right now is that all these guys get lined up in a row I started to realize I'm no different I think I run the world too I'm running around my computer and my article and this and that lately like I'm in control I'm not we take Shabbat for a second we realize he's running the show but right when we realized that we looked down into our kiddush cup and we realize why is he running the show he's running the show cuz he is desperately obsessively in love with me with this lowly little guy he loves me so much he's so obsessed with me if you're feeling lost in your life if you're feeling beyond anything and you haven't looked into a cup of wine saw your own reflection and said this is all for me then of course you're feeling lost you don't realize how amazing you are that for me that's key dish well rabbi thank you for those words awesome as everything in life look at that spouse that we have and go deeper in the relationship look at the children go deeper with the relationship look at my career look at my life the more were able to deepen our perspective the more we're able to have a great experience in this world that's what your pots about shut down the physical so you can see the spiritual you know something amazing if you look at wine what is wine you got a grape and the grape has a certain value but when you go into the inside of the grape when you can go past the physical the shell of the grape and you can actually crush the grape you actually unlock the ability to make something that is exponentially greater than grapes themselves the value of grit a bunch of grapes and wine is totally different the value goes up exponentially because you get to the middle of something and God says every time you have a great experience of happiness a wedding of birth Shabbat a holiday start with wine you know why because I want to remember you're having a good time you can make it even greater by going inside it take the things that we have in our lives and delve into look for the spirituality of something it'll only make it better grapes are good but wine the inside of the grape it's exponentially better and I hope this Shabbat the kiddush is even more powerful and more meaningful and so for me and mine and you and yours I wish you well hi I'm may this be a week where we see the inside of everything where we live lives that are deep where we have eyes that see spiritual we recognize that inside everything in my life is this glistening force that can make it even greater even deeper even more enjoyable my life was meant to be deeper I might left my life was meant to be more enhanced with this world God
