The Secret to Real Humor? Stop Trying to Understand It

So, I have a question for Jeff about you have like a world-famous laugh. And >> that? Is that true? >> My laugh can give me away often and people imitate my laugh. >> Really? >> Yeah, I go from this big booming laugh to also I have a really a giggle. And generally when I do it, other people laugh at me laughing. >> That is actually part of my question. A good laugh makes other people laugh. I was like thinking about this. A laugh alone usually doesn't make you laugh. So, a laugh is both like a reaction to humor, but also like an amplification of humor. And like have you ruminated on your laugh? >> the answer is absolutely not. There is no self-reflection on my laugh. My comedy, I don't do a lot of self-reflection on. I go with it. >> Mhm. >> And I remember there was a guy who produced the comedy show. And all he wanted to do at dinner was analyze comedy, my comedy, comedy. And he would just going on and on. When we were done and I went to my car, at that moment and for the foreseeable future, I was no longer funny. It was all in the head stuff, too many things to think about. I don't like analyzing it. And what brought me out of it, there was a book called Letters from a Nut. I started reading it and I just started bursting laughing. And the more I laugh and the more I read, I'm funny again. But I lost How long >> do you lose it for? >> A little hours. >> No. [clears throat] This was a good week into 2 weeks even. And it was very frustrating and concerning and >> There's one where Larry talks about the NBA and it's funny, but it's you're laughing at it. >> That's one of my favorite things. He said to me one time, >> [laughter] >> He said to me one time, "You know, I could have been a great NBA basketball, but I could have dribbled. I'm a good dribbler. I worked on my And he was being so sincere." >> Really? >> And I said, "Where would you dribble?" He says, "In my house." I go, "How did that work out?" "Larry, stop your dribbling. Enough with the dribbling, Larry." And he does his mom so beautifully. And that he knows that kills me. So, when that came up on the panel >> I'm just waiting for him to take a breath. >> Wow. Oh, man. What do you think you're going to be a professional basketball player? >> I of course lost it because when Larry does his mother's voice in terms of the adversity that he felt with her that is so Jewish and so clear, so funny.
