The origin of consciousness.

[Music] chuttan welcome to practical spirituality here in the old city of Jerusalem in Asia tour overlooking the Western Wall today we're going to talk about some of the most important foundations of of life and reality and perhaps debunk certain misconceptions that people wind up stuck in and so I think what we'll do is we're gonna take it in six steps anyone who's heard a lot of my classes might have heard these six steps but let's see if we can take a little further today and the first step is that before there was something there was nothing we're just using text messaging here when saving Asia tours Inc that's my way of donating today so the before there was something there was nothing and this is something that's universally held whether into religion whether you're into physics science before there was something there was nothing now this is very uncomfortable for scientists because if there was really nothing then there should never been anything because nothing makes nothing so there should never been anything and so that makes things very uncomfortable and then comes theories and that's why every almost every large University has a department called theoretical physics theoretical physics and that's a lot of fun there sometimes I wonder if those guys are on psychedelics or something cuz they're they're really creative theoretical physicists are really creative guys and they're usually hippies but they but I've met a few over the years and I've had a few in this class and we've had really some great conversations with them and what is their job their jumps to theorize because nothing makes nothing and since so there obviously has to be something other than nothing here comes the theories of what must have made this place now we don't believe in any of those theories necessarily I mean it could be though hid it but they probably won't because we believe we've hit it and what is it it's exactly what the atheists say and we've discussed this yesterday ends and what the atheists say and what the Jews say is the same thing is that it's nothing it actually is nothing like really nothing not like the physicists say that it must be something we're gonna figure it out or at least accept all kinds of money from grants and stuff to say we're gonna figure it out and you can imagine that the atheists have a very strong not all atheist but some would really want the physicist to figure out something out there but I would tell the atheist not to try to figure out what's out there because they are they already got the answer the answer is it's not there's nothing out there and that's great because that's what Judaism says it's Judaism nay theist we get along we say the same thing that before there was something there was nothing now the obviously it's very problematic to say it's nothing because nothing makes nothing and that's why we call it God and that's why they have theories but it makes them a lot more sense to say it's God why does it makes more sense says God then just start coming up with random theories like staring at your belly button on big grants and university theories why would you why would why is it better to say it's God I don't mean better for you it's definitely better for you who meant you know our whole if we really went with the pure you know that there is no God then it's not just that it was nothing but but it's nothing and no God meaning it's just it's just something that we have yet to discover then our entire civilization would literally unravel and fall apart and half the people would probably wind up depressed and suicidal because it always devolves pure atheism always devolves to nihilism always develops anyone know what I'm talking about everyone felt that feeling of emptiness and meaninglessness the walls not nihilism when segments come to you in a second but the issue of that meaninglessness that Dean is in the nihilism that leads to suicides and and and can lead to resentment of society and that resentment of the suffering people go through and to start finding victims of meaning meeting were the victims of someone who's the perpetrator then you start pointing fingers at some patriarchy or God knows what you're gonna point your fingers at and the next thing you know people are getting killed sometimes by the government but sometimes by some kid with a gun in a high school but you know once you go into nihilism and things unravel real quick hopefully they only kill themselves and I don't want anyone killing themself but the you know and I'm thinking I'm batting a thousand I've stopped no I don't even know how many suicides but I've got a perfect track record so far preventing anyone that gave any suicide that got to me was prevent which is not that many as a couple year four five six year so so the anyway but it lead in but the whole fabric of society cuz we don't realize yet everyone's walking around with wrong and right and it's keeping the fabric of society together it's not unraveling because of this sense of wrong right now atheists also have to deal with wrong awright what are they gonna say about that inner voice that compass inside of all humanity that does not exist in primates primates will rip each other to shreds primates have no mercy when there's territory at stake or or hierarchy battles they will they will tear a tribe of monkeys limb from limb and viciously you know all of you think monkeys are cute yeah they're cute behind bars maybe in cages that's that's where their cuteness ends and those kids are there for a reason they wouldn't be giving you up bear hugs for sure so so the human beings have this conscience and that's very hard for an atheist to grapple with but nevertheless it's there and what is it doing there and where to come from and and why does everyone have it now the the actual with where I'm looking for the the conscience the the material that the conscience of uses the criterias the the words gone but meaning where however you were educated might be different than how she was educated in there for you but you both have the conscience you understand you'll have maybe to conscience about different things and then there's like super massive OCD conscience of people who are in the ultra-orthodox world because I mean you imagine like feeling bad about like drinking that water without a blessing maybe but you imagine feeling bad about it that you didn't wash your hands six times this morning maybe or if you imagine spending your whole day feeling bad about the fact that you miss sanction ah by 9:30 4:00 this morning you read you feel bad about that so it's like conscience on steroids and not to mention you can't speak disparage something about anyone and and the rules are quite strict and what's called disparaging and so maybe they're just good but there's detail after detail to detail and you can understand the atheist by the way because they want to get rid of con you except you can as much as Hitler said that conscience is a Jewish invention and he's come to rid the world of of the what he called the false vision of conscience and morality those were his words quote unquote Hitler came to do that but the crazy thing is why did he try to do that because he thought it was the right thing to do what's what's back conscience he was actually trying to do something good for the world get rid of conscience cuz he felt on his conscience that conscience is bad it was insane I mean the guy obviously he seemed to have a pretty high IQ but he blew that one that's for sure you know because to go out of your way that much to do something obviously means you have a conscience know his conscience what's that no not at all you go to on you watch who's the famous atheist that I always forget his name what sam harris is sam Harris's variant happy there's conscience and he can't just you can't explain why there's conscience that's where he stumbles is because how do you explain it it's not doesn't make any sense evolutionary it in evolutionary terms the conscience is anti evolutionary meaning you'll wind up giving all your stuff away just because you feel so good when you give it away and now you have nothing not very evolutionary evolutionarily beneficial well they're in evolution the prime prime me the primary theory is is that there's something called a survival the fittest and so you the more you have the more ability you have to survive and the more you give which is you know the jewish way is like how could I possibly give away everything I've got you know like like that's that's we think about oh yeah that's that too but the but the thing is is that people are hell-bent on letting go of what would make them survive best because in the animal kingdom survival comes from reproduction you know that's the genetic side and then you've got the survival which is from having you know if you're a lion it's good to have big giant you know canine teeth and if you're in good claws and if your bare claws are helpful and strong jaw if you're a human being a big fat bank account it's pretty nice and and you know a nice home with some security cameras and your own ability to survive every animal human every animal forget DNA every that's a part of reproduction every human every animal is specifically designed according the evolutionists for its survival that's the teeth that's the claws the muscles it's everything and human beings we have the ability to survive but we tend towards feeling better about our lives which is back to conscience feeling better about our lives when we're givers yeah you could say it's society beneficial and there are a lot of animals that will take a hit for the tribe then then there's there's hits you'd want to take there our sacrifice you want to make for the betterment of it and the survival of the whole community yeah on that level you have it there you have a good survival technique and that's to be a giver it helps the tribe in general what's that selfish it's in your self-interest maybe I get to meet a lot of really generous people who I think are almost crazy but but like I'm talking about like like there's one guy who's there's one guy who goes to whom on every year wealthy guy who's like hell-bent on feeding like yeah you just what he needs to feed like 20,000 people and there's much more money the biggest party maybe on the earth is a Jewish party believe it or not though I don't know any party bigger than it it's called LACMA Omer and you have you know seven eight hundred thousand people who all kind of take this pilgrimage to this tomb of the author of the of the Zohar of the Kabbalah and you cannot spend money there everything's free and people are just like you literally get off your bus and someone's like cold-drink you know and you'll find you come back six hours later get back on the bus there he is there he is spinners hold a cold drink tray of cold cold drink cold drink called you so I mean I get to meet people like this a lot and some of our dear friends of mine but the spiritually you could even get as bad as some Buddhist monk a celibate Buddhist monk and and that's what happens if you really follow the soul which is the source of the conscience the soul is the source of the conscience that it's a yak and action would you like me to Wow how do we prove that the soul is the source of the conscience so human beings by the way there's many definition of soul for example I canna milles in Judaism we say have a certain soul but we're talking about specifically here the human soul the one that gets you to be able to talk because you notice any animal that doesn't have the human soul cannot talk it might be able to be like a parrot you know like that kind of talk but but no they're not going to be expressing themselves and the human beings which are called in Hebrew mid bear because they're the inanimate is domain vegetables so math animals are high humans are called mid bear why because of the soul the soul is how you're able to actually put together speech now we have this entire kingdom of plant animal and humans are they're only beings that have conscience no other beings have conscience now there's some pretty advanced features of beings like I just saw an article that a dog has waited now for four years where its owner dropped him off I guess the owner must have died in a crash afterwards forgot his dog there no dog hasn't left now for four years people just come and feed it they're still waiting for its owner there's a story in Africa where a girl was left behind by her tribe and a lion came and sat next to her until they found her sat for like days just guarding her until the tribe came back so and we know other stories of people were lost in the wilds when they were infants or you know very young toddlers and were raised by a pack of wolves and stuff like that they obviously found no threat by that particular thing and something clicked in or you could just say God did it you know but because gods in control of such things anyway we so the gods in control of such things that's fine keep doing it so one of the ways we know the gods in control of things is the okay but I'll just say quickly is that the that the it says in the Torah that something that no human being would have ever written which is already segwaying to the Torah being divine and that is that human beings that whoever wrote the Torah obviously can control the minds of men and animals if he chooses to and because we see that were commanded three pilgrimages a year and which means that no one's allowed to guard the borders you're not allowed to leave soldiers anywhere near the borders of Israel they're all to come to Jerusalem every able-bodied man must come the women came to but but you know if they just had a baby they don't have to men have to even if they just had a baby and they meaning if their wives just had a baby and they and anyway the Torah says that the hearts of the enemies of Israel and the people who hated us in those generations will not covet your land when you come to Jerusalem on the pilgrimages so who ever offered the book has control over the hearts of the enemies now get back getting back to the soul human beings are the only beings with what's that it doesn't matter we're just a minute you would never author such a book and use it as what would depict be the a societal this the societal laws like it's a law it's not like a nice thing to do to visit Jerusalem you come or if you look on the tour it says it's death penalty it's a spiritual death it's not a based in it's not a court death but the guy's gonna die if he doesn't come to Jerusalem so what is because you can't directly link to God or soul control in consciousness you're just saying that sure lucky me sure locking in st. there there's no other way that's not their exercise that sir venture I was I was on a separate subject than you stolen consciousness I was on the subject just of God being able to control the hearts of men or animals I mean animals be a hell of a lot easier controlling the man and you see that God clear whoever authored the turret has the ability to control the hearts of people and that's an event in history the gun control meaning the that I would normally not even go to but I felt like I had to go to the store and pick up whenever I had to pick up but the thing is I know that stores closed right then but I just had totally amnesia of that cross town go to the store of course it's closed it's been it had been closed for two hours this wasn't like it was closing Hiddink was two hours and I myself know it's hours so I go to the store I see it's closed I'm like what in the world am i doing out here guess we'll figure it out and I literally turn around someone right there like God sent you to me right now and it happens over and over and over again I'll give you another one I had a I had a person who was unstable who was doing my seminar which I don't allow people are unstable do my seminar but I made an exception with this particular present because of the ascent and his emotional instability was such that then I could keep an eye hit him during the seminar and he'd be ok and there's a whole waiver to sign and everything but he did not pass the test to be able to do the seminar but nevertheless he passed my private interview with him to come to this work that I I do with people anyway what had happened we canceled the seminar for that day it was when the seminar used to be an hour a day we canceled the seminar day this guy was the only person coming from out of Jerusalem and all the rest of the group I was gonna see them in the morning so I saw the group in the morning I couldn't reach the guy it was pre cellphones we didn't have cell phones at the time I couldn't reach him I just felt so bad for him and I knew it was gonna the the seminars built to destabilize you the whole point is to destabilize you so that maybe you could create a stable you that's worth having it was opposed to all your nuts nuts eNOS that you've now called stability and so I knew this would just flip this guy out but I literally had no way to reach him to tell him I was canceling he was gonna be coming in from television I returned a phone call with a button on my phone I returned a phone call with a button on my phone and and actually there were cell phones but very few people had them and it had a button that you know you press down and it returns call so I returned I just pressed it cuz didn't know who call solving there was a number there no one left a message but I at least returned it so all of a sudden a payphone answers it's this guy answered a payphone in Israel I don't know where he was a shadow door tell Aviva the phone calls from the morning this was like like four or five in the afternoon oh I don't know this guy didn't call me from a pay phone you didn't call me from any payphone what someone had called me someone called me no way what this guy is doing answering phones like like yes who is this it's Robert glazier I just wanted you to know that the class has cancelled today and he was like how did you know I was at this pay phone you can imagine about the paperboy looking around like maybe windows upstairs mmmm I'm up inside a window you know how'd you know is that this pay phone so I decided just for fun just to mess with him I decided to to save her sure there's a lot of things you don't know about me oh these whatever folks and then and he goes he says and that was it and then oh now things like that happen and it's happening you over and over again do you make choice if God tells you every time he's gonna usurp your freewill you're gonna have any choice but I will never be able to be well what do you because free well means you have a choice but if one option it's good health and that's freewill that they come to your head how is that pretty well ah I see what you're saying so the reason it's free will is because yes very nice question a very nice question and the question is and we're still talking about souls how we know soul and the conscience is because of the soul but the very nice question about free will is if the Torah tells you you know do the right it says it specifically by the way in the 30th chapter of Deuteronomy it says I have given you life never give you the good and life and I've given you the bad and death or the death in the bad I'm the reason confuses I don't know if death or life and the good or good in life I don't forget the order I think it's the good in life and the bad and death and then it says choose life they're feeling thirsty hopefully they'll stop screaming soon so what kind of free will is that if you choose the wrong thing and the answer is gender is lots of free will have you guys noticed that it doesn't make that big a difference to you in your choices the fact that if you choose the wrong thing you're basically screwed if you don't you still do the wrong thing sometimes you still do the wrong thing even though being badly messed up so the way we're gonna understand this yet you want something what they do earn something from doing it they get a smoke now and they deal with the with the disease later choice in life means are going to Starbucks I get the great and the price difference and other factors right that's a short it still do you mind coming up a seat so that my was just saying if you're if you're gonna say that every choice in life has consequences which it does I'll argue that is choosing tea or coffee at Starbucks and choosing heaven or hell like tea or coffee Starbucks there's gonna be price difference one is gonna be hotter than the other whatever their differences in measure people stops when somebody puts a gun to my head and says choose coffee and I kill you which is essentially what the Bible is living in in a way it is free will exist even with consequences but when the consequences are life or death it's not free will anymore right so it's a little different I think the best way to understand this would be the alternative what if God decided not to tell you about the downside of bad choices what if we just said there's that you left it out how would you do very few people [Music] we still have laws thankfully and first for okay there's civil law and stuff like that but it's so much of so much stuff's going on when you're alone yeah and most of most of religions are also only not killing others because of civil law right civil law is not gonna help us much here but but I'm saying that civil laws I'm saying this person today and people been religion I'm just I'm at your personal relationship they don't have religion and people are killing there less than here and in New York they have less to kill for crabs what's that my point is that yeah they have less religion them therefore less to kill for listen be em but seriously if we think about the alternative that we don't know the downside how would your free will be so in the way you know if you listen this re better if you go with re so now you have like this G wow I have like this big group I can choose a lot of things now because it's not so black of white where I choose suddenly it got real gray because it's not so clear what's the up or down side of any choice and so I can just kind of move along based on my whims more or less it seems like more free will accept what except you don't know the playing field you don't know you have you own no idea where you stand you don't know your GPS at all and by god having through the tour and by the way that conscience how do you know the soul is the source of the conscience so it's very simple the the conscience is basically saying that's right that's wrong that's right that's wrong that's right that's wrong and it could be very gross things like thou shalt not kill Israel you know it's wrong and and you know mmm helping the poor might be that's right you know not always gonna be wrong you know if you have the money to feed your own kids and you wind up giving it away someone else and the kids starve that's wrong so it's not all it's not that clear but it's pretty clear that giving to the poor's is right so all those strokes are right and wrong so what is it inside of us that has this right thing going on I don't want you not to answer that quickly I want you to think about that everyone just taking their hearts right now what is that right voice inside of you such that if you didn't listen to it if you betrayed it if you breached it and this can go for an atheist what is that thing that says something's right that's inside of you take a moment just think about it what is that wait this is the moment everyone's thinking about it take a moment and I don't want its content that was the word I was missing the content meaning the content of right and wrong for you might be different than hers and you know you meet a Hindu they're gonna have their own content we read plenty of overlap okay so one more SEC just give everyone a second forget the content what that part of you that's interested in right and knows that it's that long is wrong what is that from our side no because they because they the someone else could not have it and they'll they have a logical side of the brain but they don't have that I'm saying that's content without the content well the them to do you and that's using that rule you can know what's right and wrong without having an inner voice aka emotions tell you that little system yeah the only the only answer I've gotten so far is believe in an eye for an eye yeah but then you have two rules that are that are overlapping and in some cases you would fall one rule and in other kids you would follow another it's because in the cases where you for one or the other it depends on the person and on the logic or another psychological aspects of each single human being right whether every human being right and wrong can be defined as the golden rule and the thing that pushes you to it and we want to do good because we feel good because because we're selfish folk and if we think you put you put good into the world it'll eventually get back to us just one theory but at the end of the day it doesn't necessarily have to be invisible magic a day I'm just saying ask for evidence if you were a woman in a jungle would you
