The Meat We Eat - Part 9: Chicken Coop Shailos

There's a remez, and a way to remember all of the different treifos. Don Chanuk Nefesh. Don, Drusas Nekuvah. Chanuk, Chaserah, Netulah, Keruah. Nefesh, Nefulah, Pesukah, Shevurah. Cut, broken, smashed, fallen, ripped, a hole, missing, removed. All of these things are treifos. The Rambam in Perek Yud from Hilchos Shechitah lists 70 different details where each of these treifos apply. [music] It used to be the shochtim would have to list all 70 of them in some places. Luckily, it's not a common part of the test anymore, but it is important that a shochet knows all these many details. Because when you shecht an animal, once in a while, you're going to see something that is written in Halacha that you never saw before. Working in a kashrus agency offers us the opportunity to answer all kinds of shailos. People call with shailos in all areas of Shulchan Aruch. But, the most unique ones are what we call chicken coop shailos. There are people out there who have chickens living in their backyard. And they have these shailos where a an animal, a fox, a raccoon, commonly, will attack their chickens and get into the coop. Is the chicken still kosher? There's an entire complicated area of Halacha that addresses whether the chicken is kosher, whether we are afraid that if it killed the chicken, maybe it got to the other chickens, if if the chickens made noise, if they stopped making noise, all kinds of shailos about chicken coops. If you have a chicken coop, you better make sure you don't let any animals in there cuz it's very hard to make them kosher. The females, even after chicken coop attack that might render all your chickens non-kosher, the females can be rendered kosher again if we wait a full cycle and they start laying eggs again cuz we know the Halacha is, "Treifah eina yoldes." And if a chicken can lay an egg, then we know it's not treif.
