Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin says that his teacher the Vilna Gaon [music] constantly coun- counseled him to give extra attention to children of poor families. >> [music] >> Why? He says because their parents' lack of funds prevented them from getting the best tutors and study [music] arrangements. But consequently, their true potential was probably unwrapped. The Gaon of Vilna believed in the Gemara Masechet Nedarim that [music] in a different sense, in a different sense. He says that really we see time and time again throughout history that the biggest giants in Torah actually came from poor [music] people. Like materially poor. One example is Rabbi Akiva. Another example is Hillel the Elder. Hillel the Elder would make one a groat per week, one one coin per week. [music] Work in the whole week cutting wood. Half of it he'd give to his family to feed them. The other half he'd pay the caller so he could go learn Torah. Half his money goes to his family, here, eat. The other half, I need to learn. In those days they used to pay people to go learn Torah, not like today we have to pay people to come. Used to pay. One day Hillel the Elder couldn't work. [music] Why? It was snowing. So he couldn't cut the wood, so he couldn't make the money. So he wanted to go learn Torah anyway. And the uh the bodyguard, the bouncer 9 ft tall, says, "Hey, hey, sorry, sir. Do not enter." Yeah, "If I let you in, I have to let everybody else in free. Can't do it. That's strict rules. Now, Hillel didn't care about the rules. He cared about the law. He says, "I came here to learn Torah. [music] So, it's okay. I can't break the rules. They don't want to I can't go in. That's fine. That's their prerogative. It's their right. There's rules. I can't break them. But, doesn't mean I can't learn Torah. What am I going to do?" He climbed the roof. He climbed the roof and he listened to what was a glass on top of the roof and he listened through the glass. Now, all this time there's most more snow coming down. But, he wanted to listen to the teachings of Shemaya and Avtalyon, the two great Adonai, both converts. Both of them were converts, became the heads of the Sanhedrin. Became the giants of the generation. They're teaching and Hillel is a kid is on the roof with snow on top of him. They realized he was on the roof to learn Torah. He says, "For him, it's worth it to violate Shabbat to save his life. They lit a fire to bring him back to life. They brought him back to life and they said, "You sacrificed your life to learn Torah. From now on, you are our personal student." And he became [music] the Gadol Hador. The head rabbi of all of Am Yisrael. And on top of it, they find out who is he? He's one of the descendants of David Hamelech. One of the descendants of David Hamelech. Mashiach comes from Hillel. Poor is nothing. The Gaon of Vilna says, the Gemara says, Hizaharu Bnei Aniyim Shemehem Yetzei Torah. [music] Be careful of the sons of the poor because from there comes the poor there comes the Torah. The Gaon of Vilna says, he understands that his understanding is the giants of the Torah are going to come from poor people. Why? Mesirat Nefesh. Sacrifice. They used to sacrifice.
