Farbrengen in honor of Rabbi Yudi Dukes' Birthday 5782

good evening uh and welcome somebody gave me a thumbs up if you could hear oh perfect okay i think they were trying to show a video of the rabbit start off the event which is something that yuri would always uh enjoy doing uh starting off with something from the redder but we weren't able to hear or see they were gathered here tonight to celebrate and for bring in honor of beauties there is almond yogurt's birthday this is something that just a short year ago i remember it like yesterday yeti was in cornell and having a very tough day and when i was able to come and visit him we brought birthday hats and birthday cakes and we hung up together birthday signs in his uh in his room and birthday wishes from his friends and his mood changed to the extent that the next day when i got back to the uh to america's 302 to the janet office we he decided to make it for bringing because every year this is something that he was very very careful about starting from his apartment in crown heights and then in the five towns he would always fulfill all of the rabbits specific directives especially the ones connected to the birthday when he would make a birthday for brengan and for bring together and always bring someone special to for brain so the entire office got together during the day last year and we were very very lucky that yuri joined us um on his ipad and for bring with us and hazard a mimer so i think the most appropriate way for us to start off tonight's february and before we hear from this family and friends and watch the videos would be to [Music] sing the negan that we would prepare before a birthday uh boy says a mimer and then if we can please share the audio and the video with the slideshow from last year when yuri said the mimer last year so we asked rabbi groener who has put this together in the big issue for all of the effort and energy that went into this everybody can just take a few minutes and we'll hear the reminder that yodi said last year there's lots of peace to those who love your torah and they will not falter so and it's known that uh the the some of the uh the khabad rebellion uh you know may had some questions on this possum and specifically the friedrich rabba brings out some questions that first of all from the fact that it says shalom a lot of peace so we understand that there's different levels of peace there's a little peace there's you know regular peace and then there's a lot of peace so we have to understand what does it mean that this that there's a lot of peace for those who love your torah um and also why is it you know that when it describes the you know the uh the lovers of your torah uh it doesn't really seem to be the right way to describe it because the way you learn something is by you is by studying so a proper way to describe it would have been to say to those who study your torah why to those who love your torah um so also we have to understand why is it set specifically through this we have this uh you know this promise that we will not falter if we uh you know get this great piece uh because of loving the torah so the indian who that this that it says those who love your torah specifically is because that when we've studied torah it has to come first with the service of davening and which we know is the same concept as what that the jewish people had to um make a bracha on the torah before they learned it because the bracha seemingly has nothing to do with something that you study but when you make a bracha you're showing that this actually the reason why we're learning is not because it's another piece of study material but because this is a mitzvah so we're taking god and we're putting it into the torah and that is also the concept of um of of avoiding is that idea that we're bringing godliness into uh unto the torah that we learn afterwards and that's why it says to those who love your torah because like it says there is no um service like the service of love so when we talk about serving god and the service of of of davening that is love and so really so that's why we use the phrase to those who love your torah because that this is actually a lesson for us that when we study we can't just study torah like a subject we have to prepare ourselves and make sure that that study is infused with the the the the intention that this is hashem's tara um and because we all know that the whole purpose of study we say that that studying torah is greater than than actually doing mitzvoth but um but um but that's only because that you need to study also in order to know what to do but the main purpose of the study of torah is so that we should do the mitzvos so therefore since when we when we study the torah properly with bringing the hashem into the torah first through our our our our service of davening so then ain't no then we don't falter that the kim amitsus the reason why we're doing the mitzvahs also is not because of some academic uh you know thing that we you know we studied the torah came up with a good argument and so now i'm going in doing good no because we prepared ourselves before the learning we davened and we learned with the intention that hashem is the one who's telling us to learn so then our mistress are also being done in the proper way and that's why um so now when we study terra in this way um which we have the love of hashem and it which which means the darwining beforehand so this is and which that brings hashem down into this world so then we effect that this world becomes a place where there's not just plain peace but there's a lot of a lot of peace and like we say also in the same paragraph that's um that those who study torah they increase the peace in the world so what does this mean we it says actually that when the world was created it was complete we all know that you know we were here to fix up this broken world you know so it was complete and now we're fixing it and then it's going to be complete again but nevertheless what does it say that even though the world was was created complete that it was it was actually uh trembling up until the point when the yiddish accepted the taran harvesting because the entire creation of the world was there only because that only for the fact that the idioms should accept the torah because that the ten the ten were dependent uh i'm sorry the ten uh sarma maurice that created the world were dependent on the even accepting the ten commandments and only then did the world stop um stop uh uh shaking and and trembling and the same is true with with each one of us that we make increased peace in the world when we do our dominate when we learn and do our mitzvahs with the with the um preparation of davening properly and bringing the noise and this works out good evening um it's an honor to be here to join you tonight on this very special evening um uh before i begin remarks i would like to uh share a thought uh an anecdote that took place in the early 1990s the rebbe was in shul for tisha b'av the regular tissue that myrev and uh and and as was customary at the time as soon as the rebel left the room uh the the head of teaching hasidic thought in 770 rabbi yoakan would teach a hasidic discourse that the rebbe actually had given in about uh about the lamentations and uh the rebel left the room and and things moved quickly in 770 and he started teaching so the rebel left the room and the rebel left the elevator and went into the elevator to go upstairs what rabbi khan may have not known is that the uh that the the his talk was being broadcast upstairs as well so when the rabbit exited the elevator he's standing in the hallway and he's listening to uh to the hasidim downstairs talking about this uh the mimer that he had given years before and the revolution for so for some time the reason why i reminded the story is that we're bringing downstairs and he's upstairs and uh and i i hope that he's listening to our fabrian and we're [Music] as we celebrate this very special uh a milestone of 40 years old where it actually says that tama teaches in aveda zara page five that at the age of 40 years old a person begins to get on their teacher's frequency on their revised frequency begin to truly understand their revit a very special milestone in our home we have a custom i'd like to share with you um that at a birthday a custom started by my wife that had a birthday party uh we go around the table and we share something that we love and we admire about the birthday person by the way this is before you get cake you don't get cake until that goes down so uh so tonight we're going to say something that we uh we love and admire about the birthday person rabbi yodi dukes uh with an emphasis on baha'i no boy that uh the rabbit always emphasized that that uh we apply these lessons that we learn from yodi and to apply them to our own lives so i'd like to share two things there's many things but for this evening two things that we love and admire about yeti and we can apply them to our our own life i know that mrs dukes is listening i know the kids are listening and i and and the entire community is listening so i want to share something that very special about unity that we can all apply to our own life and that is one is hashtag no excuses and i'll and i'll i'll i'll expand on that so when you was in the hospital there were many different um uh journeys like the torah says he camped here and he traveled there he camped there and he traveled there so there was there was um the kimmel hospital different rooms within the kimmel hospital there was a tisch hospital there was langone there was a presbyterian and back in different rooms in each one and many different ups and downs a real roller coaster throughout the entire time um and during this period of time i received the call we had my wife and i director khabaras in manhattan and we got a call from someone from crown heights um actually someone from flatbush that was uh that was uh that was rushed to the hospital had coveted and and he was rushed before he had his twin they need to fill in okay so i called the chaplain and i called a few other people locally and and everyone had valid excuses not to go um at the time this fellow was in kimmel and ud was in rehab in uh in langone and i hesitated to call yadi but after everybody else now you have to remember also at that time ud was it was was not walking at the time he was he was wheelchair-bound and and um but i knew if i called he'll get it done somehow i have no idea how so later in the day and i called yod and i told him if someone's feeling i don't know how exactly he got the twilling over but i got big thank yous from this guy in the completely different wing of the hospital that you did got it done got it done so to be a hussain to be a true classic um it's very easy to talk and talk the talk um but it's another thing completely to get it done and usually got it done he's very focused um on on on on what he did and uh and for us to and everyone in their own life we all know what uh what what needs to get done and so to get it done not something else also that uh that we love about the birthday boy and admire about the birthday boy with an emphasis to apply it to our own life i also like to suggest a little to hear an easy uh i don't like when people like lay on these heavy big ahatas tomorrow everyone's doing you know 10 my maram in this we're getting something easy and something um nice is that we just came from utah's kiss slave um ud's birthdays right after kiss slave um his name presumably um rabbi dukes is rabbi rabbi duke singer presumably he's there for the altar eva schneider's almond and born around get this kiss slave so we wish each other um uh and so there's two things that we uh that uh you do really excel you do was really on talking terms with tanya i mean we know i knew i know some of us you know chapter one chapter two um you know the uh chapter jude is the saddik you know your owlet is the russian you basis the painting but then there's like chapters deep in um you knew these chapters you knew them well a lot of them about pep but i'm not focusing on that i'm going to focus on something else there's darke which is the um which is the the way of hasidas not just but there's a way and namely khabad niggunin gunaim are khabad melody special khabad melodies by most estimates there are over 500 khabad melodies um some of them are obscure you know a lot of them i would say most of them um and um and ability is very special um they tell a story about the altareba that um i'm gonna sort of paraphrase here that um that uh some people were having a hard time understanding the tanya and i'm gonna paraphrase within the parlance of our language he said you got the manual but you didn't get the soundtrack once you listen to the and then things start clicking there's a story about the famous story about the altareba that people when he went to the city of shklov there were scholars and they prepared lots of questions for him and uh and the alta rebbe went on to the bema he he he went on to the stage in the synagogue and he started singing a hasidic melody and it's not that their questions were answered but all of a sudden the questions weren't questions anymore so a niggin a hasidic melody takes us to a a more spiritual place and um when i was uh when i would visit ud in the hospital we would typically talk lakota terra or and we would sing the gonam and one negan we would always sing is called the pasta it's a shepherd a beautiful melody which is uh within this melody the hashem is our shepherd and they're it's it has built in piety and and hasidic emotion so soon i'm going to as a flutter i was thinking that maybe we could all learn this melody and uh because it's one of your favorite tunes and i'm going to post it a little later um uh on the on the on the chat here on the notes i'll conclude with this is that ud was very mindful of his 40th birth and i'll tell you this it was the last shabbos before ud passed and the rules were constantly changing in the hospital um all the hospitals during covet you could have three guests two guests for three hours for two hours so the final chavez they had a rule that only one guest um for the entire for the entire uh for the entire for the entire whatever was available for that chavez that chavez judy was he was up he was conscious um and uh he had a letterboard he couldn't communicate at that point um verbally but he had a letterboard and he was up and it was three hours or four hours of um of communication time and but i felt uncomfortable that it was difficult for him to talk i wanted him to enjoy my presence i didn't want to sit there like a golem or even say to him because i wanted to raise his spirits so i walked into the room and uh and i told him like this this is how it's gonna go down i'm gonna be the jukebox i'm gonna sing the goon for the next for the duration of the day and i said this is the off button you want to turn me off just push over here and i won't sing if you're not interested anymore anyway so i launched into a bunch of the good in and before i left um he went like this to me so i didn't know what he was referring to he was able to still a little bit uh sort of verbalize and he said um not even 40. he he he he worded it out and uh he was mindful of his 40th birthday and so he very much wanted to live he we very much want him to live so now that he's upstairs at tt's before um we want him here and we look forward to uh right now there's this moment of cotton as a kid for this moment uh that we're here we yearn for him to be downstairs with us very soon with the coming of meshiach uh maybe sweetly in our days thank you very much for being metsker that's very very sweet um we'll now ask rabbi israel 11 who got to know you very very well over yomtif in north carolina right yeah north carolina yeah and so please of 11 if you can share with us a little bit of your memories of your day and you should be able to unmute yourself and go right ahead thank you and i want to say everybody like him to the family you know hi muddy myself my wife and our entire community that rabbi yudhi came over every year for shauna young keeper um to lead us during the the evenings to lead us through the davening and to lead us to the casatera and that i think went on for close to 10 years uh we were lucky enough to have the entire books family when they were very very small i think they were the first time they came to only two children um and over the years uh there were more ball hashem and it was a pleasure to have them all those years um i just want to share a little bit on the and the impact and the impact that rabbi yuri had on me and my family and our our and our community and this impact it's a it's a lasting impact um because it's still going on um beauty came as i mentioned every year for rosh hashanah kipper and actually took me a while to understand that impact a lot of it was after yuri wasn't able to come anymore and i realized how a lot of people actually looked at ud as our rabbi you know our rabbi and people that people that saw him two times a year um during the entire uh ten months the duty was battling um they were the first question they were asking me was i was any update from judy and the update from yuri and they wanted to know the inside i know all following uh saw on facebook and they're all getting all the the updates all the time but they wanted to know more information about their own rabbi and and it's just an amazing the impact that he had in the community and uh i wanted to share a few things i wanted you know i i'm going back i think it was about end of thomas or beginning of of talking pay and rosh hashanah was approaching and judy and i made a deal uh our agreement was that he's coming back and if any of us for any reason cannot come back it's easy that person is or if he i'm not planning and i'm coming back for sean young keeper we need to let each other know if it's not happening but the but the the la catrilla is that is uh that is coming and then the family is coming back and that's why i never even reached out anymore it was a clear thing sometime i spoke to him just a week or two before rosh hashanah just to find out details about what he may need and the kids and sleeping arrangements and stuff like that but it wasn't like a it was a known thing that the duke's camel family are coming and yuri is going to lead us again and it was um it was uh end of tamus or something i remember i was i think it was an evening i was in the middle of my summer camp that year and i was busy and i'm getting a um a what's up call from you the a video call and he and he he calls me and he's starting to sing um the kardash of rosh hashanah the tune of with you this smile and i think it was in the hospital of the rehab at the time and after he finished singing the song in the melody this is said to me sonic um [Music] the way it looks i'm not going to be able to lead the services this year for rosh hashanah and i'm worried about you and i wanted to make sure that you're not that you're not going to be left without anybody doing it you need to look for somebody because i don't think i'm gonna have to cut it they can't cause hopefully i'll be out of the hospital and hopefully i'll be able to come to charlotte but i don't think i'm gonna be able to stand and leave the services so you need to find someone else i'm worried i want to make sure maybe i'm gonna ask somebody he was worried about me laying in the hospital and worried about our community who is going to lead us and then that elo there was a um i think five days before rosh hashanah um hello and um it was that ellu just few days before the holidays and we had a zoom call for our community um in honor of rosh hashanah we already had another cousin coming another young man that came to little services and it was all planned but we had a plea rosh hashanah gallery and zoom um with the members of our community and ud and i think some of his family members saul was there on it was on two and the kids and we i spoke to him before and i said what should we do you know what's the plan so he said i'm going to share a few words and he said and i said what else you want to do and he said i'm going to sing maybe we're going to sing some of the rosh hashanah melodies are you guys i think he said video volcano and he said when it sounded and it was a very very move and i remember he said i said yuri but i know can you do it he said don't don't feel bad for me he said don't feel bad for me you push me and and i'll do it and if i can't do it i'm going to tell you i'm going to send you a text or whatever i'm going to figure out a way out to know to you on the zoom that i can do it and he said but let's do the songs first because i don't want to lose my energy and that takes a lot of my energy and i don't want to let's let's do the the the the singing first and yuri was singing with us in a volcano and he was sitting with us of a borough and it was such a i mean i was crying i mean my community people were all in tears i mean i i wasn't next to the end of all each one in his in his own home but the message that we got and the the inspiration the way that i would say the way affected the community the messages that i got the following day um the emails and the text messages um our people were so amazed how ud laying in the hospital and what he's worried about he's going about the little community in charlotte north carolina that uh uh what how dangerous is going to be but i wanted to say there is a there is one thing that i notice especially only after judy passed away um there was many many people there was one young man my one guy that actually ended up joining janet and and that was another thing judy uh uh um you know i think this has come first ud always um uh uh never had an opportunity um after davening before davani uh we had a little kiddush after rosh hashanah after the dawning so doing kiddish he was always going through and he said okay i need a potential i need to get few people for janet you know we have a hundred people in the room right now 60 people right now it was always on his mind and you know we had a little community dinner for the nights of rosh hashanah and he was there he said okay who can i talk to about janet and i think his goal was every year to come back from charlotte with another three four khafus or potential herpes you know to to do and all that was his passion i remember explaining the community that janet is his day job and when it comes to us that's his second shift you know that is a night job but the ud's main job is janet and that was his passion and the passion that he has for looming torah and the passion that he had to share the loving tale with people and how people will uh will do it and we as well that are a few people in our community that's still learning and janet are still of harvest and all from ud's push during this time but i wanted to say and i think if you're talking about vahchon and what can we as the have always mentioned that it's when we're sitting in an uh when we're thinking about someone that is no longer with us in this world is always those over here that's still alive what can we learn from him and what can we learn from his life and how can we learn from it and this is something that i noticed only after after the mice i did not notice it at the time during uh while you did was still coming i noticed that only after judy wasn't able to come anymore people felt that they lost their best friend people in my community felt that they lost their rabbi that cared about them and loved them and remember them that they were they felt they are the closest he's the closest guy to them and as i said before they saw them twice a year and even when they saw him twice a year he was busy at the front it was the kazan and yuri was not he was doing the whole thing from the beginning of uh still the end of mustafa including he was standing in the front the entire time and he had very little time to speak to people um and it's for somehow for summer we managed to touch so many people on a personal level i'm not even talking about those that tell me the davening and the way it was so artic and and we felt like we are gonna back to our uh uh old show when we were kids so this is remind me of my grandparents i got a lot of those but i'm not talking about that i'm talking about people that felt a special personal connection with judy and as i mentioned before i don't know how he managed to do it and and when i'm thinking about now and i'm trying to reflect and all those years that we will resolve our beauty coming here for spamita's dialogue days um what i think and what i realized is when ud spoke to somebody there was nothing else there was nothing else in this world he was able to uh uh devote himself and he was able to give his entire self to the person that he's talking to so if he was done davening standing on the phone for four hours and then standing the whole time and now he made a little kid rosh hashanah and he's sitting with somebody on the table and he's speaking to him for five minutes so during those five minutes the person that was talking to him felt that he's all mine judy has nothing else on his head it's not about his children and i still want to go out and it's not about the fact that he didn't have a chance to even drink or eat anything judy what he has on my on his head is me and and and he was able to give it to everybody he was able to give it to younger people to children to teenagers and he was able to do it to the older people to all the ladies to uh different people in our community and this was a talent um it was a talent that he had but i think it's also a lesson for us it's a lesson for us the important of dealing with people as individuals uh uh the lesson and when we are we cannot just you know we are conflicted and we are busy with life and each one is his own slickest in life um and sometimes we're just rushing through life and we're trying to arrange the big events and we're trying to challenge the big program so whatever we are involved with but don't forget the individual don't forget about the yogi the people and and the effect that you have on people when you relate to them in such a way is unbelievable and and and this is apollo the fact that that the ud and sarah had on our community something that's still going on every single day there is not is no weak past without i i hear from somebody uh something about the inspire that they were inspired or then still being inspired by uh by either uh sarah's posts on facebook or the conversations that he had with her in the past or with ud and everything and then the battle that he went through and and and and the memories that we had from him and and i'm going to say i'm going to complete with alexayne that will learn with from judy and we learn from the dukes family for yuri from sarah from the kids we should learn that how to um cherish the relationships that we had we have with people with individuals and to have the patience to give the attention to everybody and the effect that we could have in the long run we have people in our community there is a family that struggles right now uh with some health issue and a family member and every time i speak to them would inspire them to go through right now and fight it and to fight this battle is the is the battle that the sovereign unity will be fighting for such a long time so the heim that will will uh uh will take it from us and uh uh and and uh we'll take it from him and we'll take it to our heart and the height and the limbo you will be up and will continue for later of 11 thank you so much [Music] it's beautiful hearing uh how much yuui kid for everybody and even people that he didn't see all the time it's to please share with us a few words i'm going to start with a little history that even predates you so i dropped out of my doctoral program in cleveland and flew to newark airport because i wanted to spend a few weeks or a month or two finding out about my jewish heritage at yeshiva tifers before him in morristown when i arrived it was the night of roy schweitz kislev in tawshin lana pass the yeshiva was rejoicing and dancing with the seafrey torah most of the night celebrating the rebels returned home from his icu transformed office after recovering from his massive heart attack so this tremendous symbol you know simcha's pierre together this tremendous symbol broke through all my boundaries and i then and there committed to myself that not a few weeks or months i was going to stay in yeshiva as long as it took so this started me on the road to be coming from meeting my wonderful asian kaiohinda and raising our jewish family which started with yuri's birth 40 years ago this coming shabbos yuri was named schneider zalman after the altitude who authored the tanya which inspired me to come to yeshiva and yehuda after the maraud who played a critical role in the conversion of the son of the duke uh and he and his subsequent marriage which our last name comes from the name yehuda was originated first of all by leia imeno she she was expressing acknowledgement and gratitude for the opportunity to bring more um more jewish people into the world than her proportionate share being that today on a secular calendar is thanksgiving i'd like to share with you how rabbi yitzchak ginsburg suggests that we implement the media of hoyd thanksgiving which are the root letters of ud's name and it means acknowledgement thanksgiving so how do we implement that in our psychological avoidance as finishing work that we start something like what rabbi metzker said no excuses we sometimes despair in hebrew the letters which is the same letters of hoyt just mixed up and we give up in the middle of a project because it seems too hard or not worthwhile seeing it to completion so in general it's our faculty of void of acknowledgement which is responsible for all forms of perseverance persistence and diligence which enables us to accomplish and avoid atomo a work that is complete even though maisha innovated and worked through most of the task of bringing the isis bones out of mitzrayim and carrying them for 40 years it's the binay israel who the torah gives credit to since they finished the task of burying him in shrimp work that is complete also means psychologically feeling that the task you've just done is complete many times the zayar quotes sages who said it was worth it for me to come into this world just to hear your yiddish balchemt said it's worthwhile to live 70 years and even more just to help one person just one time so when you do one mitzvah it justifies your entire life you might feel despair dave that this act that you've just done is futile what i do is for who really cares why did i expend so much time and resources for what but in hashem's eyes it's very valuable our service is needed above i have to give thanks to hashem for allowing me to successfully complete every action like we say dayenu on giving thanks for each favor hashem did for us in the long project of establishing our full relationship with him even though the later stages are still necessary in some hoyd thanksgiving means working on finishing your tasks not despairing in the middle and giving thanks for every small job you finished you finished appreciating that it's a gift that god has given you and being content with it like leia main who immortalized judy's name to mean giving thanks for the opportunity to bring more jews than her share into the world soto yuri was grateful for every opportunity to set up another janet cavuso making each participant one of hashems and the rabbit in transforming the world and bringing like him to talk to uh ministers like them one morning he comes in and he sees that they looked a little sadder than they did the day before he walks over to them and he today i guess you know between men you could ask each other that question why do you look so bad today but they they did they look bad and they just asked why do you look so bad and what do you know they answered him they answered
