So, the beginning of the parsha says
that the Yidden left Mitzrayim
vachamushim all of Bnei Yisrael mi'aretz
Mitzrayim.
So, they left vachamushim. What does
vachamushim mean? So, Rashi brings two
pshatim, they both come from the
Mechilta. The first pshat is in
chamushim ela m'zuyanim. It means they
were babaufened, right? They were armed.
They came out with all their
weaponry. The other pshat is
vachamushim, they left with only 1/5 of
the Yidden that actually left Mitzrayim
cuz 4/5 of them had died during Makas
Choshech, during the shloshim yemei
afeila. Why did they deserve to die? So,
Rashi says they didn't want to leave
Mitzrayim. These were the chevra that
wanted to stay in Mitzrayim. They didn't
want to go into Eretz Yisrael because
they didn't want to go into Eretz
Yisrael, they weren't zocheh to go to
Eretz Yisrael. Something we've spoken
about many times over the years. V'advar
Hashem atikin d'ein kama makom l'harach.
It's actually interesting if you think
about it for a second. The visual in the
Chayei Adam learns it's atzmi, there's
they're completely different visuals,
right? Vachamushim in vachamushim ela
m'zuyanim, they came out with strength,
with power, with force, right? They're
coming out azoy.
Vachamushim 1/5 they came out to
shmatet, they left 4/5 of the chevra
behind. They managed they came out like
survivors. It's Nazi Germany, DP camps,
1945, right? That's more what the
visual's like. It's fascinating, but so
stark in terms of the contrast of what
you're supposed to see in your mind's
eye when you think about this part of
the story of vachamushim all of Bnei
Yisrael mi'aretz Mitzrayim.
But there's a a dover nifla
in the sefer
Be'er Yosef which was written by the
great Rav Yosef Salant, right here in
the beginning of parshas Beshalach that
I think is k'daida say over and we're
going to end this first shiur with this.
And that is if you take a look in the
Targum Yonasan on this pasuk vachamushim
all of Bnei Yisrael mi'aretz Mitzrayim.
So, the Targum Yonasan says a third shot
in the Hamisha. Targum Yonathan says
yes I'm a
brother Yamos Suf. Kodesh Baruch who
made us evolve right they went on the
parkway south as opposed to north in the
direction of the Yamos Suf. The whole
heart and every single year was in
Hamisha Taflin. He had five children
with him. And that's the way sleep when
they saw my mitzrayim being left
mitzrayim. So, what does it mean the
Hamisha? Everybody had five children.
I'm just clear. Everyone had five
children.
Take a look at the Targum Yerushalmi.
Targum Yerushalmi says a fourth shot and
what the Hamisha means. Udvarmema
D'Hashem yes I'm a
brother Yamos Suf. Mizainen so Targum
Yerushalmi tightens the Hamisha as in
Bavofent. But what were they
armed with? Boiv the Tofa with Maisem
Toifen. And that's how sleep when they
saw being left mitzrayim. That's where
they left mitzrayim. So, you know left
mitzrayim with Maisem Toifen.
It's also Maisem Toifen. What Maisem
Toifen did they even leave mitzrayim
with?
I guess Don Pesach and Don Mila.
That's what it's referring to. It sounds
like it seems mitzrayim was right now
with Maisem Toifen. Okay, maybe that's
the shot. But the Beryo Yusuf says a
Dover Nefa.
He says that Chazal say the Hamisha all
the nation of Israel mitzrayim means
that the Yidden left with only 1/5
of the original population.
What does that mean? 4/5 of the Yidden
died. Now that's pasha that it was only
the adults that died because the
children of those adults what did they
deserve to die? It's not mistaber and
it's not you talking that they did
anything to deserve to die. Which means
there were a whole bunch of Yisomim and
Yisomos
that were in mitzrayim that when the
time came to leave somebody had to take
care of.
So, after Beryo Yusuf who took care of
them? So, it has to be that the 1/5 of
Yidden that left mitzrayim THEY TOOK
CARE OF ALL THOSE KINDELACH. BECAUSE WHO
ELSE WAS TAKING care of those
kinderlach? Says the Bnei Yosef, that's
what the Targum Yonasan means. The whole
Am Shisha Tafwin, EACH PERSON LEFT WITH
FIVE CHILDREN. NOT FIVE CHILDREN, IT WAS
FIVE FAMILIES. BECAUSE THEY LEFT WITH
THEIR FAMILY, BUT THE OTHER FOUR
FAMILIES, what about them? So he said
they went They went together with the
other mishpachas. And every single
person took his corresponding
four-fifths. And the Yidden are leaving
Mitzrayim and going and they're taking
care of their children. AND THINK ABOUT
THE BALAGAN AND THE GERIDA, what's going
on over there. But it's not only their
children that they're taking care of.
Said the Bnei Yosef, they were taking
care of everybody's children as well.
And he says, that's Yishayahu what the
Targum Yerushalmi meant. He said the
Yidden left mizuyanim. They left
mizuyanim but of the tova WITH MAASIM
TOVIM. IT'S NOT THE MAASIM tovim they
did IN MITZRAYIM, THAT THEY DID IN
MITZRAYIM right now physically as
they're exiting the Rafah crossing.
Literally as they're exiting the actual
crossings, they're doing maasim tovim.
What the maasim tovim is they're taking
care of these yesomim and these yesomos.
They're taking care of these little
children. They're taking care of these
kinderlach that they're taking with
them. Says the Bnei Yosef, it's not
rachok to say that the posuk shat of a
Chamushim Al Bnei Yisrael Mitzrayim
of
one-fifth.
And the psat of the Targum Yonasan and
the Chamushim Al Bnei Yisrael Mitzrayim,
which means Chamisha Tafwin, five
children. And the Targum Yerushalmi's
psat of a Chamushim Al Bnei Yisrael
Mitzrayim, which means that they were
armed with maasim tovim are all coming
from the same place. Because it was only
one-fifth of the Yidden that left
Mitzrayim. It's for that reason they had
to go with five families of children.
They took their own children, and they
took the children of those four-fifths
of Yidden that never died in Mitzrayim.
And that's what it means mizuyanim with
maasim tovim. That was the way the
Yidden left Mitzrayim. At the end of the
piece, it's such a beautiful piece to
see inside. At the very end he says,
"V'chacham echad hoisif."
Sounds like he told it over to a Hacham
and the Hacham told him,
"Maybe this is what the Navi meant when
he said,
Kodesh Baruch says, we say this on Rosh
Hashanah. Kodesh Baruch says, "I
remember the chesed Neuriah." I remember
the chesed that you did in the midbar.
WHAT WAS THE CHESED that the Yidden did
in the midbar? Partially it was the
chesed towards the Kodesh Baruch was the
emunah and bitachon that the Yidden had
towards Hashem. That they didn't
question and they went ba'emunah
ba'bitachon. But he said, "It could be
there's another meaning over here. The
chesed Neuriah was the chesed that the
Yidden did with the kinderlach. That's
the chesed Neuriah and Kodesh Baruch
says, "That's chos." Of the way the
Yidden left Mitzrayim was so profound
that mamish thousands of years later and
Ben Yakov and Ben Ephraim we talk about
the chesed Neuriah. All of these pshatim
of
all Bnei Yisrael in Mitzrayim, they're
all olin al konah echad. They all mean
the same thing either way. Such a
beautiful hergesh and a beautiful pshat
from the Be'er Yosef again in the visual
of the Chayei Adam L'Adam Atzmoi. We are
going to stop the first shiur here.
