The Gardener’s Secret 🌿

[music] >> In 1934, >> [music] >> the botanist Kenneth Thimann at the California Institute of Technology discovered one of the strangest secrets of the plant world. He was studying a hormone called auxin and found that the main branch at the top of the plant produces it in large quantities. And then he made a startling discovery. This hormone does not stimulate [music] growth, it suppresses it. The auxin that flows from the top downward prevents the side buds from growing. The plant deliberately [music] keeps all the side branches dormant. As long as the top is in control, no side [music] branch awakens. All the energy goes in one direction, upward, and here [music] came the discovery that changed gardening forever. The moment you prune the top, cutting the main branch, the concentration of auxin drops and all the side buds that were dormant suddenly awaken at once. The plant bursts into growth [music] in all directions. What was dormant burst into life. Every professional gardener knows this [music] secret. If you want the plant to thicken, fill out, and bloom, you actually need to prune the top. To cut the part that [music] seems most dominant, and only then does the hidden potential, the 90% that was waiting underneath, awaken. This law is the story of our lives. We have a main branch, a big plan, [music] a dominant dream, a path where sure is the way, and all our energy flows only there, [music] while all the other possibilities, the talents, remain dormant underneath. And [music] then comes the day when the top is pruned. The plan fails, the dream shatters, the path is closed to us, and we're sure it's the end, that we've lost the [music] only thing, that we have nowhere else to go. Thousands of years before Thimann, the Torah taught us the law of the soul's peripheral growth. In the book of Isaiah, it is written, "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways [music] are not my ways," says the Lord. Listen closely. The creator does not say that your plans are bad. [music] He says, "I have ways you don't even know exist." When [music] he prunes our top, the plan we were so sure of, he is not harming us. He releases the auxin, awakening all the dormant branches we didn't even know we had. And in Tractate Berakhot, it is written, "Everything [music] the Merciful One does, he does for good." The failure we experience, the door that closed, [music] the dream that was shattered, these are not the end of growth. They are the pruning, they are the moment when 90% of our potential, which [music] lay dormant beneath the surface, finally awakens and bursts forth. So, the next time our head is pruned, when a big plan fails, when a dream comes to [music] an end, we won't despair. We'll remember Thiman. We'll remember the dormant buds. When the head is pruned, [music] growth does not end. Now, it is only just beginning to break through.
