The Fast of Gedaliah Explained | Missed Opportunities - Rabbi Dovid Orlofsky

Hi everybody, David Olowski. Welcome to the special edition of the Revolves Show. Because as you know, the way the calendar works out uh our podcast usually comes out on Mondays. So to try to do this on um Monday of Rashashana is a little bit of a problem. I don't think people should be watching the video on Chabas. Even if you have a Gisha neighbor turn it on, but I don't think that's right. Yeah. And so does Sus and so does Miniatzer. So this throws off our schedule. So what we decided to do here at the Rabolowski show is to do something special. All of you are probably familiar with my para in five. So we're going to do Yiff in five. And we're going to give you little fiveinut thoughts that will be peppered throughout uh the Yiff uh season. and give you little insights. Yeah, just little ideas to be able to uh focus on as we go along. And after Yundiff, we will go back to a fulllength episode where we will uh do a full podcast. But for now, EP little a little uh timma, little tastes of of ideas. So we spoke about rashash shana in the last podcast. Um we had a actually a few a few different ideas about rashash shana. So uh let's skip ahead to the end of rashash shana which is s gdalia which is not appreciated. I know it's not appreciated. I grew up in a orthodox shaw out in Long Island. I didn't I grew up in a conservator show in Long Island but after I became bar mitzvah I found an orthod I switched over and I'll never forget it was Russia Shana the second day we were waiting for my and the next day was going to be Tomalia and somebody asked uh one of these late sim you know the late were all sitting outside sch smoozing you know I think the rv was giving some sort of a share but that lates were all outside I don't know why I was there I was probably associate theological experiment doing research. But uh so one of them they says you know are you going to fast tomorrow for Tom Gdalia and he says I look at it this way Gdalia never fasted for me why should I fast for him okay besides the leonus and uh you know of of all Judaism which to my mind on the end of Russasha going to muva is really bad form Um, and there are people who keep tongadaya but don't really appreciate it. I've heard from more than one person, it was so smart to stick a tinus right after two days of rashana because you're so full. It's good that you have a tinus afterwards to be able to fast as if this is some sort of a, you know, a dietary consideration. So GA is a very important thing because I'll put it for you in a historical context. The tanim that have to do with the when you line was besieged when the walls were breached. Tishab when the Bish was destroyed and Sam Gadalia the others have nothing to do with the what was Tom Gadalia after Khadna took the Jews into Galis the Jews who he didn't even bother taking he left behind all the all the people who had complained their whole lives I'm not mukas. Don't come from an important family. I don't have land. I'm not that smart. I'm uh a below average uh unsuccessful kind of guy. And now everyone's been taken away. And all of these people who have this excuse, we never succeeded because society done us wrong. They've got the whole country to themselves and Wessa took a sadic by the name of Gdalia and put him in charge and his job was to lead this remnant of Israel so that they would still be a yes inel and they would be able to now finally succeed. One year when I was teaching in yeshiva so I had such a good group that come pesak man they all moved up to the base medish I didn't have a shia so they collected all the guys from the other sh who hadn't done anything all year who were at m they gave them to me it's quite a contrast because I had this really really great group but now I had this more you know challenging group and now for the first time every one of these eyes was the center of attention. Usually they were being shown up in their own shir but now they were the shir and so I had to find the mak for each person and see what interested them and what I could talk about to tie it into the gamarra to get them excited. Gda took all these people who never made it and said this is your big chance. But what happened is two people decided, "Ah, he's a lackey for the Babylonians. We're going to kill him." And someone came to Gdala and said, "These two guys are going to kill you." And Gdala says, "Oh, and he didn't believe them." And they came in and they killed him. assassination is in the news. You know, a good man, an oy of Israel, someone who defended the Jews and and Israel. Charlie Kirk, he was assassinated. He couldn't imagine it because he was effective. He was helping people. He was mazic people. He was presenting Israel's case. He was he was quieting the kamas supporters and uh all of these people attacking the Jews and and he was very effective and they killed him. He didn't didn't see it coming. Donald Trump was having a rally and that guy got up on a roof and shot him. He turned his head at the last moment. Otherwise, he would have died just like Charlie Kirk would have hit him right in the neck. And Gdelia was assassinated by two Jews who I'm sure thought that they were doing the good thing, the right thing. And that was the end. And all those Jews went into gullis and uh that was the end of the And these people went off to Egypt and we don't know what became of them because gives you opportunities. How appropriate afterash gives us opportunities. Don't throw it back in his face. And on some GA we recognize we like those people are given opportunities and we waste them. I was I told the story beforehand I'm sure when I was in AR I one time went around the the introductory shir and I said how did you guys get here? I met someone at school. I met somebody at work. I met someone on the bus. I have a neighbor, you know. I bumped into somebody and I decided to listen and I got involved and eventually I decided to come to Israel and learn and I said, "It's unbelievable. Everybody is here because at some point you got a knock on the door that brought you to Yeshiva." And someone said, "But what about all the people who never get a knock on the door?" And I said, "Everybody gets a knock on the door. Most people choose not to answer it." Gdalia was the knock on the door reached out to us and gave us a lifeline and we killed him and we lost that opportunity. And now we go into Tomalia in between and is giving us an opportunity. Dear Shashematsu, seek Hashem when he's close. He's coming to you. Don't let the opportunity slip away.
