Good evening,
good evening.
Good evening.
>> In sports, there are two types of
players, Navey.
There are two types of players in
sports, Savary.
There are certain players who know
nothing of the history of their sport.
They're even introduced to older
players. The guys on the Mets, and like
George Foster comes back to the locker
room like, "Yo,
I don't know you." Like and they give
attitude like even, "You're a washed up.
I don't care about you."
It's a certain guy. And then there are
the athletes that like
they give respect as real. Like the old
player comes and there's like a certain
I always admire that second guy.
Because it's a certain presentness. He's
playing and making millions a year.
People built this sport that allow him
to play.
And there's a beauty to like somebody
who's just like present, who's aware.
Like don't be dumb.
Be aware. Be present. A big part of
speaking, my son Maishy gave a problem
in school. A big trick to speaking. If I
would say the number one trick, I would
tell everybody here the number one
revelation good to see you. The number
one trick, Alicia, to speaking. My son
Maishy gave a shear today in the
yeshiva.
And we were talking about it. The number
one and there are certainly techniques
of shearum all that. The number one
thing is be there. I'm sitting here
right now. I ran a lot today. I've been
in Boston. I've been back. Interviews. I
want to be in front of the hevrusa. I
want to be with you.
Now, there I don't want to say tricks
cuz tricks are stupid. I'm talking about
like techniques. There are ideas,
Yechiel, how do you make yourself
present? By the way, feel your chair.
Feel your chair. So nice, nice chair.
See, the table's a little messy, but
it's fun. It's like a nice type of mess,
Shtickel. I always clash they be clean.
There's there's something nice about
this mess but I like like absorbing
like get yourself comfortable be
present. The number one thing to
speaking is get yourself present. Who
who asked me to speak? That's why
say you should speak about the host.
People start their speech are you this
is like the worst.
I don't know told me you're missing the
you're being very formal. I promise
that's not what meant.
The words of
a person you start with the honor of
your host.
So people like a very formal with that
you're like missing out what
are saying is who invited you.
It's a very big thing when you speak
absorb it. It's not what you the saying
it means that you're like before you ask
anybody else to be at your speech are
you at your speech?
You could come here you're running
you're busy you're this like see you
aren't there and you want people at your
share also. not there
Be present like like understand be
present to something be there.
The athlete who really shows up to his
game says there's a history here.
Somebody built my sport. The good the
good I guarantee you people people are
talking about this next guard. I
guarantee you he knows old Knicks and
respects them. I guarantee you.
I've gotten like a feel the guy has some
dignity
you know he has some dignity. I
guarantee you that he knows the old
players and respects them. It's
intelligent. You're part of a community.
Hey, who built this community? It's not
like a crazy when you're at a speech you
start with the host who brought you
here. Like that's how you come to the
speech.
It's not like are
saying something intelligent you should
ask what second I'm here.
It's like a if somebody's getting
married it's hard cuz you're nervous.
You're speaking at a
the first thing is you could relax.
Who's making the Sheva Brachas?
Who invited you? Who is What What do
they want you to do here? Hmm.
But like be present to it. It's hard,
cuz your brain is racing. I'm speaking
with
Breathe. Breathe. Be present.
I used to watch my Rebbi before he would
talk in a speech. It was like elite. I
can't prove this cuz it was no words.
Whenever he spoke, there was a lot of
silence at the beginning. The big people
I know before they speak there's like a
They never like come and speak.
It's like whoa.
I spoke in my daughter's school and I
was rushing from here to go to the Bais
Yaakov and I ran. It's like the No, I I
let relaxed.
All the girls are my friends' kids. It
was like funny, right? With Sneaky's
daughters were there. Other people.
I'm not coming and you're speaking whoa.
I like I looked around like my friends'
kids. It was like so nice. Oh.
Oh. You know, it was like all my
friends' children are there.
Absorb that. Be present to that and then
you've arrived. Now you can ask people
come. Let's Let's meet.
I want to express to the guys you're in
the Yeshiva. We can run. Somebody built
this place. There are people We spoke
yesterday at Valley. We had it was right
Oberlander's yard site and we had a
gathering in the Yeshiva. Easily it made
it harder. I could have just gathered
the Rebbi in myish.
It actually made it harder to have the
guys cuz the guys didn't know him.
If we sat me, Reb Ezi, Reb Reb Russ, all
the people that knew him, we could talk
in a certain way cuz we're not like
teaching each other who he was. We know
who he was.
It made it a little bit tricky. We're
talking about guys who are not with us.
So let me tell you a little about him. I
wanted to like get lost in memories.
When I think right Oberlander, I have a
lot of happy memories, challenging
memories, complicated, just amazing
stuff we went through together for years
running a Yeshiva for a decade. Seven
years we ran the high school and years
before we were running we were running
we were running parts of the base
medrash together. So there were memories
and recollections. I A little bit I got
lost and somebody pointed out, "Kayla,
you're not here. I don't know what you
just said." I was like, "Okay, I'm
sorry. I'm sorry. I'm like I'm here. I'm
back." Cuz they were asking for a
speech. I didn't want to give a speech.
But so why did we ask the whole Yeshiva
to come this
cuz I want guys to be present people.
You're in a Yeshiva, people built your
Yeshiva.
I want to express I'm not saying this
Reb Ari Mandel was how many years ago
were you in Yeshiva, Reb Ari?
Feels like five. You thought of us
>> 25
>> I'm 27. You're like 24. So it's funny we
say numbers. He was here 25 years ago. I
want to express this. I'm not saying
this. The Yeshiva is not walls. We're
not the tables here. That's cute. That
that's it it's true. It's part has this
host this piece of wood to be here. The
Yeshiva's people
who've grown, who've invested. The
Yeshiva's been a progression. There's a
lot of collective wisdom here. A lot of
collective experience, a lot of service,
a lot of courage, a lot of tears, a lot
of the stories here of people who like
and together we've we've evolved, we've
grown, we've been impacted. Reb Ari
Mandel is one of the early guys in the
Yeshiva who changed my life. And it's a
middle it's a middle of going on. I'm
not I'm not saying anything exaggerated.
A kid was here today visiting the
Yeshiva checking it out for next year.
He lost his mind from this place. He
said, "Who thought of this?" And the
answer is no one person thought of this.
It wouldn't be true. It's not true.
Nobody like dreamed of this. I never
dreamed of this. He asked me, "Did you
plan this?" No. No. No. I definitely
cared about people and care about
people. And then we learned with the
guys we're learning. We're in the
middle. And what's it going to be? And
we're just about We're growing. We're
learning. We're studying. I met Ari I
met I met Ari Garfield only a couple of
years ago. And I'm changed I was talking
to Hoodie. We were driving back from
Boston. I talked about Ari's.
From the biggest we've had here Ari
Garfield. We have people real people
growing, figuring out talk. I met Azriel
only 2 years ago. We became close.
And we're learning and we're learning
and growing. I want to welcome Rav Ari
Mendel back to Yeshiva. But I want you
to know that you meet somebody in a
secular school. I I want to say this. At
least I want to express this. Graduation
typically is one big farce.
Because people let's say graduate in a
secular school, take a math book.
Who's the honorary at the graduation?
The math book. You should put the math
books in front. People just finished the
math book. So mazel tov, kiss the math
book. We should speak about the
different math books that we learned.
And they got a new group read the math
book. And a new group. It's not about
the people. It's about the curriculum.
So the curriculum finished another year.
People are People are They should sit
up. You should sit up all the
curriculum. I think should get it the
front. We should hug and kiss, speak
about how special the curriculum. The
mamish the curriculum, the book did
another year and another group read it.
That's a secular school. Yeshiva's about
people, about a person's journey.
There's no books, no curriculum, none of
that stuff. That's not the story. The
story is Moishe. Moishe, you're the
star. A week from Thursday night, I want
to go celebrate you. Your journey of
growth. He's a guy every day sitting at
Shiur I sold him. Are you punished if
you don't go to Shiur?
Should I know is anybody paying you to
go to Shiur? Do your parents give you
some? Maybe there's like a Why do you go
to share every day?
>> I like it.
>> I want to learn. I want to learn.
Why does he go to share every day? I
want to be there. It's something I get
from it.
It's your story. It's your story. You're
finishing. That's a graduation. People
who grew, who put in, who figured out.
Here's a celebration of people. There's
no curriculum. This stuff Have a
curriculum, don't. It's people. It's
people's story, people's journey. If
they learn something this, they learn
this book is We're not celebrating the
books. We're celebrating people. People.
Torah is is the marriage of a human
being learning Torah. What it How it
filters through the person. It's people.
So, I want to express that Reb Aryeh
When I introduce When a guy comes, it's
not another guy who read the same book
as you.
When I talk an old
older He's young. We're both still We're
both still kids. I promise We're in the
middle of our journey, struggling,
figuring out. When somebody comes We
yesterday had a day for Aryeh
Oberlander.
Aryeh was cuz did you Were you friends
out Al Bachum He was already teaching
here when you came. Is that true? Was he
a bachur when you came?
>> He was
He wasn't married. He was a couple of
>> Really? Amazing. He was here with Aryeh
Oberlander's journey.
So, I want to express and one day
Nissim, when I introduce you one day in
10 years, you have a beautiful family.
A guy sitting here, you impacted us. You
didn't come study in a place. Your
sincerity, your small I wanted a guy
visiting Yeshiva. I call over bachrum
when a guy visits. Why are you calling
over a bachur? In a secular school,
don't call anybody over. Show them the
math book. This is the book we read. Who
you are, who he is. Here, I bring Nissim
over. I want a guy to meet There's
There's people's stories. That's what
the Yeshiva is. People's stories. That's
what the Yeshiva is.
So, I want to express I want to welcome
Reb Aryeh Mendel back home. He's made me
statta.
>> [applause]
>> I want to I'm telling you.
The Mendel family the MS the Mendel
family the amount they the amount
they've given the Yeshiva Reb Aryeh's
family. Reb Aryeh's father gave up his
life being there for Yidden. He gave up
his life. He was our sole member who was
there constantly for Yidden. Mamish was
there for Yidden. Many Tzadikin and
Gedoilim he was there and many Yidden he
helped and was involved with. This
Yeshivi helped out a lot. Used to have a
parlor meeting yearly in Reb Beinish
Mendel's house in Reb Aryeh's house.
Yearly was hosted. The mama the holy
mama she she should be gezunt to live
many years. Mrs. Mendel has hosted guys
hundreds of times hundreds hundreds of
times. Many of our guys there Shabbos
seudos Shabbos Pesach for years she's
hosted guys in Yeshiva Pesach.
This is like a family that's connected
in a very very deep way to the Yeshiva.
It's amazing how many years the Beis
Medrash the Mesivta Reb Overlander's
journey how many years the Mendel family
they're Kohanim the Kohanim Gedolim.
It's funny that that always Yitzy Mendel
led the Kohanim here. Somebody recently
said we have to like practice the the
the songs cuz we lost our Kein Godol
Yitzy's not here.
Yitzy was a poshit that helped to
organize. There's always one Kein who
like make sure everybody's on the same
pitch. Otherwise you have a guy saying
shalom two guys are still in the middle
of singing a third guy that's like a
little So one of the guys
One of the one of the Kohanim said to me
we need like a choir practice or he said
Rebbi appoint a Kein Godol. Like appoint
one of the Kohanim to be a Kein Godol
cuz Yitzy was our Kein Godol. One one of
the Kohanim said to me Harry. So
I really want to appreciate that Aryeh
is back in Yeshiva. It's a joy to have
you here. What you built, you have a
chelek. A guy grows in life, you put in
your sincerity, you have a chelek years
to come of guys growth here. You came,
you developed, you learned by your
rebbe, also made a rebbe. I want to
express this also. We're seeing right
Sultan's a massive impact in Yeshiva.
The guys make the rebbe.
It's It's always funny to me. It says a
salecha rav.
Should say learn by you. What's I say?
In a certain way, the Talmud builds the
rebbe. The Talmud builds the rebbe. I
told guys, tell me if you ask him Ari,
guys in the Yeshiva in Baltimore looking
for a rav right now.
I told them, don't get a finished
product. That's not a good idea. Get a
rav you make. Somebody A bocher in this
Yeshiva told his grandfather, his
grandfather said to him, "No, no, why
aren't you married yet?" So he said,
"I'm looking for grandma." The grandma
is in Olam Ha'Emes and she had a big
Vegas. So he said, "I'm looking for
grandma."
So the zaida said, "You don't marry
grandma, you make grandma."
Something so deep and true. It's true.
You don't marry grandma, you make
grandma.
By respecting, by appreciating. You
don't You don't hire a rav. If somebody
could hire, I'm not talking about age.
Talking about a grown The worst chill
people think like a certain famous rav,
if we could get him, it'd be bad for
you. He's already made, he won't grow
with you. That's a It's a bad chill.
The best rabbonim
The best rabbonim make mistakes and they
grow up with their shul. That The best
couples grow up together. My wife and I
grew up together. We made mistakes, we
figured out. You grow up. It's called
ishas nurim. You grow up together, you
make each other, you don't find each
other. You build each other. That's the
best shidduch. If you're looking for a
rav, don't make the mistake, Moishe. You
don't look for the finish Oh, that
famous rav, you You want him. Unless
he's able to make mistakes again and be
a baby again. If he's willing to It's
not an age thing.
If he's willing not to know and willing
I begged our guys in Baltimore I rehire
a rav who's mom young is going to and
together build each other. You build
him, he'll build you.
The guys in Yeshiva are saying
build your rebbe. Moishe gets credit. I
was I was driving with Hoodie. They
built Rabbi Silverman. Rabbi Silverman's
big. Together Rabbi Russ's talmidim.
It's not a It's not a It's not a It's a
compliment. It's not They built Rabbi
Russ. Rabbi Russ built them. They built
each other. You build the rebbe and
together you build with. You build with.
You build with. Talmidim Rabbi
Mechaberai Rabbi Oise Mechaberai
Talmidim comes as a press. People
learning from each other.
So you've just been part of a very very
part of the journey of the Yeshiva. I'm
thankful you're home Reb Aryeh. I'm
thankful May Moishe He's sweet. He
belongs to the Mendel family. Sweet like
sugar. And he's cool and he's fun. So
[applause]
I'm glad you made me thank you for
bringing the cake.
I want to share I owe music to Aryeh but
I gave I need a first share. I do want
to give music to Aryeh but I want to
Gabe it's right here.
>> Okay.
>> I still can't get over that Justin
Bieber made a song Gabe Gabe Gabe. All
about Gabe. And he calls him Gabe. I'm
like I thought I was the only one. I'm
like
>> [laughter]
>> But uh
You heard his song Gabe Gabe Gabe?
What?
>> I asked.
>> Okay, yeah.
The kids are is Leli. Yechiel I want you
to hear this Gemara. I want to learn a
Gemara with the chevre one piece. We're
not even doing the whole Gemara. I want
one piece of Gemara. It's late in the
year. It would be wrong Aryeh. The year
shouldn't finish without studying this
Gemara. It's a Gemara Gittin samach beis
amud open and it says as follows.
Reb Huna Reb Hista Yosfi to my run.
Reb Huna Reb Hista are sitting.
They're sitting. To my run Reb Huna Reb
Hista follow us on Ganeva and a man
passes by Ganeva this year the year
passes by and his name is Ganeva.
Ganeva funny name it's a
It's funny when I met the year next
door.
When I met
my my cousin Shalom Levy shop
Grushensky
Shalom Grushensky next door the farmer
next door so he tells me I asked him if
there other year in Durham he said very
not very little he's been here only 65
years in Durham. So I said he said talk
he says yeah yeah yeah there was one guy
he was a gunner. He said there was one
other year he was a gunner
I don't he said he was a thief. So there
was one other year he was a thief. I
don't believe he was a thief the guy
himself didn't don't steal. So I said He
wasn't a thief but the guy himself he
said there was one other year he was a
thief he lived up the block and told me
he was a thief. It just remind me his
name Ganeva such an interesting name
gunner but Ganeva his name was Ganeva.
What?
Geneva there's such a place it's funny.
Geneva Ganeva maybe the city's named the
good good as well. So there was a year
Reb Huna and Reb Hista are sitting and
Ganeva this year passes by whose name is
Ganeva.
I'm really sad with Gabriel.
So one of them gave listen to this
Gamara Gabriel.
So Gabriel listen to the Gamara so to my
run are sitting there Reb Hista Reb Huna
David listen to this Gamara David. Reb
Hista Reb Huna Reb Hista are sitting and
the Ganeva Ganeva comes by this year.
Amarley had a havray Yechiel. So, one of
them says to the other, "Nay come a come
a let's stand up for him." De bar or you
know he's a talmud chacham. It's a
mitzvah de oraisa.
Va dar ta pnei zaken it is a chiyuv.
It's a light. It's an opportunity of
connection to Hashem. Talmud chacham
comes into the room you rise, you stand
up.
So, one says Akiva that's the halacha.
Va dar ta pnei zaken it's a mitzvah.
It's an opportunity to connect to God.
It's a light. It's a tzivui. It's a
chance to connect to Hashem. Chiyuv.
That a talmud chacham walks into the
room you have to stand up.
So, Ganeva's passing by as Rav Huna says
one says to the other, "Let us stand up
for him." De bar or you know he's a
talmud chacham. Nay come a come a let's
stand up for him as the halacha
dictates. So, one says to the other,
"Let's stand up." Now, you can ask like
why do you have to say that to the other
one? Could be the other one didn't see
him. We have an opportunity a talmud
chacham here let's rise. You stand to
mitzvah de oraisa to stand for the
talmud chacham.
The way I understand the mitzvah de
oraisa the simple is you're giving
respect. You're standing. Why is that
like the respect stand up for the talmud
chacham?
All rise. Like what is that? What is
that the talmud chacham walks in and you
stand?
>> by that.
>> That's what I think they've excellent. I
think that the inyan is somebody walks
in and we just keep going.
Woah. Woah. Woah.
>> Woah. Hey hey hey hey hey.
>> I didn't there was no timing but say
they were all moved by big time. They
came to Yeshiva and they didn't pack.
Somebody walks in and you don't move is
like a shtickel irrelevant to me.
I'm I'm busy you know. It's not
necessarily relevant. A talmud chacham
comes into the room you rise means he's
relevant to me.
It means my life doesn't just get to
Woah, Talmud Chacham say relevance. It's
relevant to me.
Whatever you say pshat, you could say
your own pshat, Ezra. The halacha is a
Talmud Chacham comes in
to mitzvah derabbanan. Hidur panim
zaken, Chazal teach us in Maseches
Kiddushin, a zaken is zachan chachma.
This person acquired wisdom. So, a
Talmud Chacham walks in, it kayam of the
mitzvah derabbanan, we rise. We're
yidden, we stand up.
You're at a chasana and they call up
They call up a rav, a chashuv rav, Rebbe
Yisrael Broidy,
Mit Kresk. So, what do you do when he
walks by? Stand up. I can get up. Hidur
panim zaken mitzvah derabbanan, we're
born for mitzvahs. It's a big light.
Kavod haTalmud Chacham, kavod haTorah,
kavod haTalmud Chacham. You stand up.
That's what a yid does. So, Kanievsky is
walking by, so Reb Chaim
and Reb Chaim one says to the other,
"Nu, let's stand up. Mitzvah
derabbanan."
On my way, he says back
U'mikam maypalganekum?
Should we stand up in front of a
divisive person? He's divisive. Divisive
means he causes machlokes.
He's not somebody who unites. He
divides. Palga, he's a divisive person.
Wherever he goes, he causes division.
There people that are divisive. So,
don't stand up. It's crazy.
Pela. It's a mitzvah derabbanan, hidur
panim zaken. So, amazing Gemara getting
some pace. It's a wild Gemara Yechiel.
There's an absolute mitzvah derabbanan
to stand up for a Talmud Chacham.
Says the Gemara back, if the person's
divisive, the person's a palga, wherever
they go, there's like machlokes, don't
stand up. And that
Somehow that calls into question the
Torah they learned. Amazing Gemara.
Yehuda Zapella, there's an absolute
mitzvah d'oraita of pnei zaken to stand
up for a talmid chacham is a mitzvah
d'oraita.
Comes the Gemara getting some of base
amud aleph. And they wanted to stand up.
One of the amora'im said, "No, Kanievsky
is a big talmid chacham. Stand up talmid
chacham."
The other one said back, "Ari, he's
divisive, palga." Palga means he makes
machlokes, he's divisive.
He causes it's like a taya'lus. Taya'lus
the Torah is shaila. He said, "Don't
stand up for him. Don't stand up. He's a
palga."
It's amazing that the vice dice,
amazing.
It doesn't say it's not something that
he means he loses the right of the
mitzvah d'oraita of pnei zaken, he lose
Ari said, "What do you mean he's a
talmid chacham?" It's a pella. It's a
wild This is Gemara again, I'm not
making this up. Anybody could study it,
some of base amud pella. He's a talmid
chacham and he stayed talking in the
Torah of pnei zaken b'mi chabura talmid
chacham. If he's divisive then he's not
Torah-dik.
So clearly, and I keep it stating a
fact, that just knowing the Torah is not
enough.
Clearly, because if if just knowing it
may he's a big scholar like Ari like the
chevra is asking, he didn't he it
doesn't challenge his scholarship.
Clearly, in the world of scholarship he
was enough to be considered a learned
person.
But if he's divisive the Gemara is
saying you don't stand up for him, then
he's not connected to his Torah.
This is like a crazy window.
I told the chevra that Rav Volbe when he
stuck when he summed up Torah. Rav Volbe
who knew Torah a lot said it's an oilam
ha'yedida, it's a world of friendship.
This would be a crazy source to Rav
Volbe.
Rav Volbe, you read this Gemara, it's
wild. Here
That that it seems that where he went
there was machlokes, that people like
that.
In his wake, there was always debates
and disunion. That's what this person
sowed. That's this person created. And
says the Gemara, "Oiva Zai, we shouldn't
stand up for him." Then he's not called
a He doesn't have that halachas. He's
not an absorber of Torah.
Which shows something to us that the
world of Torah brings closeness. Olam
HaYedidus, Rebbe describes the world of
Torah that it brings people close.
Does anybody know another name in Shas
for a talmid chacham? Reuven Yona,
you're a talmid chacham, please tell the
chevra in Shas what is a talmid chacham
called.
Chaver. Crazy.
I want you to know, Sakiva. Avraham, I
need you to know this. We call somebody
a talmid chacham. In Shas, you know what
a talmid chacham is called? Chaver, a
friend. That's they're called. Chaveira
means a talmid chacham in Shas. Chaver
ain Sara Chazra means a talmid chacham.
Chaver means a talmid chacham in Shas.
Isn't that weird? He's called a chaver.
That's weird. Why is he called a friend?
Something about Torah, about a person
who absorbs Torah unites. He's called a
friend. He's called somebody chever. He
creates connection.
Amazingly, amazingly, talmidei chachamim
in this Gemara it says "Kaif l'Shalom."
You say shalom twice to a talmid
chacham. You're supposed to say shalom
shalom, like a double. What's the
shalom? Cuz they're sources of of of
shalom. They're producers of peace.
Talmidei chachamim cause union, cause
connection. If you see it I I have met
not many not many. I have seen people
who are scholars. I've seen not not
many. Usually it's not this way. I have
seen a scholar who's divisive. Wherever
he goes, there's like machlokes.
I don't know if I would stand up. While
you're there, while you're there. It's
not It's not a key of Tyra.
I'll tell you who I'm talking I'm just
kidding.
>> [laughter]
>> You
don't say names. Think guy I'm their
people where they go they sow discord.
Where they go they make machlokes.
They create.
I Well, not you know. You want You want
me to give it I can give a name. I don't
want to give a name. I didn't want to
say I don't want to rip the guy. I can
give a name.
You never met people that that in their
presence they cause division. They cause
machlokes. They cause dis
That wouldn't cause saying you could
have shittiest people have funny
shittiest so.
What causes
It's
I love you guys. The guys are
challenging. So, what is that? What's
that made of? What's like the They want
examples of what Like what do you Who is
that person that causes division? What
is that like under It's a good I like
it.
I like what you're asking. What is that?
There is I want to think about it. I I
love the guys they're like Kayla sure. I
I want to ask I want to tell you that
I'm not sure. I want to think about it.
He's giving a name.
Akiva, you're giving him a name?
Uh I thought he's telling him a name
like a guy
Akiva's the opposite. You told that to a
person who brings UNITY [applause] IS
AKIVA.
BEMIS it's I want to hear Bemis
Always when you want to study something
study its opposite my ish.
You can picture people put them in a
dorm and more people are close.
They They They unite people. They bring
people together. I I want to think about
it. My shalom. I MS want to think cuz
it's a good question. Like what is that?
Like what are we talking about,
especially with Tom and Geneva was a
person. So what was it? He's a divisive
match. I I want to I want to ask I want
to ask Ari cuz most of I want to Ari and
Mahol to share with us. What would you
say is the meter that makes somebody
divisive?
I like you guys are so cool and you
don't settle. I like being shallow
sometimes. And I hang out with guys that
are not shallow. So my shallow and Kiva
want to know so who is what is that
person? It's funny they said on Geneva
is divisive. And somehow he's divisive
says he's not a Tom and Mahol. So what
is that person do that creates my like
us? What is that? Who's the soul of of
my Who's like the one in their wake?
It's so funny cuz I'm I'm picturing
somebody. I want to like study him now.
Who is the person in his wake people
argue? Whatever they leave, oh my gosh,
that's like when they're around, oh no.
Like
>> What does that guy doing?
>> What's he That's such a good question. I
I'm really curious, Ari. I need like a
pause. Can we have a time out like a
game do four songs?
I want to think. One second. One second.
One second. But I want to hear from
Mahol. I want to hear from Avi. I want
to hear from Let me just absorb for a
minute. It's a good question.
Who is that What does that look like?
Called Geneva divisive and he has that
meter he's not tired.
>> He uses his tired.
>> What's that What's that I I want to get
I want to get it. One second. One
second.
Right, Russ. What would the person look
like that would create division? What
would that
What would What would What would be the
Geneva is a palga. He's a pal my like
us. What is that? What's Who's somebody
like creates machlokes? What What would
be
If you stand by your belief, you can't
blame a person who actually has shittas.
But it sounds like he
>> [laughter]
>> That what? That what?
That doesn't make machlokes.
But people like but but that I It's
funny. I like this. This is good. There
is So I say
we all would stand up for we're masking.
So they're asking in his sheer room the
guys are slugging it out. But do people
respect each other in that room?
So that's not a palga.
>> [laughter]
>> Heavy debate, heavy conversation. That's
That's I would never
I would never call them divisive. At the
end of the day does his Does his group
like each other?
So then well who's that person? You're
right. He's Anybody strong about
something will have like People have
shittas. You're allowed to have shittas.
And I love a good debate. In that room
the guys are beating each other up. I'd
never call divisive. Right Russ, what's
the word of the divisive man? I need to
ask somebody who's like the furthest
from it.
Avi, what are your tie knobs?
So I love that you're asking because it
to me it reminds me of what My Shana
Kiva said. He's right that big people as
real with controversial
They They had big shittas. That's not
divisive. They could even hold each
other. They had a strong shitta.
Any
But the Rambam brought claw Yisrael
together ultimately. It says It says
Hashem darkeish when Hashem likes the
ways of man gam oivin yashlimeta even
his enemies make up with him.
But to me I see on big people, you had a
big They describe Rabbi Rabbi
Schmelman, the guys love each other.
It's good debates. But then this ahava,
this love, the same there's a chiddush.
Who's the one who's divisive?
I know.
There was definitely There was
definitely I do want to say that
everybody did shuva.
Svaram were written on the shuva that
they did. Everybody worked its way.
Yeah, yeah, it was a chiddush
tikasheita. But you see what it created
in its midst is nothing short of this.
I agree like what they're describing is
there people Anybody who has a strong
shita there's going to be some healthy
discussion. But what what what what's
left is What do you say, Ari?
What's that going to look like?
It's funny It's funny to say that, Ari.
I feel terrible talk in this term you're
allowed to talk about a Russia. I don't
want to say his name here, the head of
the Nazi party.
I want to say his name. He was known
It's a style of leadership, by the way.
The head of the Nazi party would and
I've seen this style people who are not
as evil he would purposely get his
people working from all to hate each
other.
He wanted them hating each other. It was
a way of maintaining power. Nobody was
too comfortable. So he purposely would
pit one against the other.
He was insecure. So then he needed
people if everybody around him all gets
along, he was afraid they would topple
him.
So almost like maintain his power, he
would get people. He would say to this
one bad about that. And this, so
everybody was un- un- uneasy and
everybody was suspicious. It's a
leadership style. I have seen people not
as evil
do it in subtle ways, get people not to
like each other. It's a way of
maintaining There's something about that
of maintaining your power, of having the
people around you not trust each other.
It's a leadership style, believe it or
not. People that the evil person was
known for this. People less evil were
just a little insecure, create You've
ever heard of secessionary? People run
things that get people against each
other where keeps things Nobody's too
strong. Nobody's too secure. It's a
leadership style. That's what it reminds
me mayor.
>> I don't know how true it is. A lot of
times, you know, it's not like it's not
like amongst like big island, not all
the time that
And a lot of times
It's very elusive
>> I like where you asking mayor. I don't
like I don't want to force an agenda
here. Mayor is saying that I know Mahlik
and Gidolem and of course division. I'm
not I'm not trying to pretend anything
to anybody. I can express that the
Tzadikkim typically we followed were
going to unification of people, people
uniting typically.
I can't if you if you tell me a story
that was different, we have to study
that. The typical. Even cases of
Tzadikkim where there was some division,
the long-term thing to me seems people
united, people worked out. They're
temporary things, but Birtzas Hashem
Darkei Yishkam Oyvev Yishlam Me'od,
usually there's a coming together.
Could there be an exception? Could there
be humaness? Could there be a mistake?
Hillel and Shammai ultimately caused
Emes v'Shalom v'Ahava, they married each
other. They it produced We had many
Tzadikkim what?
>> Sorry it was a blast. What are you going
to do?
This is very elusive this guy. What what
they're trying to do. I think the one
>> Somehow this is what this is what this
is
This is this is
Yeah.
Reuven Yona
No, no, no. No, no, no.
I like it. I like Reuven Yona. I like
the way she is.
Could I could I could I give words? Tell
me if I'm aptly saying what you're
saying. If I'm not, correct me. Cuz I
don't want to be guilty. You said
something good. If I could share
something if I could share something
with the chevra on this subject to
answer your question. Yeah, I I want to
express something. What Maish said, I
think Reuven Yona is saying the same
thing, but I want you to call me out if
not. What's the palga? Who's the
divisive person? So, I want to express
like this and I want to tell you about
this.
Every single base madrish in the world,
including the one you're sitting in now,
we're studying truths.
They would tell me about Rabbi Silverman
share. Every base mesh and we We have a
few. We have a base madrasher, Rabbi
Shapiro's base madrasher. And right
Shapiro has a whole tire that he gives
over. Rabbi Ross has a tire here. He's
something he's about Akiva would
describe something to me about Rabbi
Ross.
Describe something amazing. He said it's
rare to sit by your share. Said I'm
sitting by your Rabbi who wants to hear.
So everybody wants to say their thing.
Said he really wants to hear. That's the
Your way to go. I listened enough Keno.
You guys paid the price you said. Now
you're going to listen to me.
A guy once said to me a guy once said
[clears throat] to me he said I've
listened to hundreds of hours of
sheerum. You owe me to listen to me.
Like I've listened enough to you. You
listen to me. It's a good point like
Kaelish you spoke so much listen a bit.
Akiva said about Rabbi Ross's sheer that
I've never in my life seen a Rabbi who
sits down and wants to hear.
Akiva going on. It's brilliant. It's
like that's a base madrasher. There's a
whole base madrasher in that. That's
crazy.
Can you I never heard of this sheerum.
Akiva said I never met a Rabbi in my
life sits down in a sheer and what he
wants is to hear.
That's filled. That's a base madrasher.
That's There's a base madrasher in there
learning a tire. That's a tire for
itself. You think like you think at a
certain point of the year Rabbi Ross
would stand up and say every I'm pardon
my English. He would say the S the S or
shut up everybody. I listened to half
now you'll listen to me.
Akiva's like we're waiting for Rabbi
Ross. Can you imagine he stands up? He
says
Dahay enough. You
I've heard about this team that team
you're enough. Now my turn.
No. So you go to the end of the year he
wants to hear.
Wants to hear. That's Akiva said that's
a Rabbi I want to hear from.
And boy do we hear. It's that there's a
base madrasher here. Base madrasher next
door there's a base madrasher Rabbi
Silverman. Rabbi Wisnicki Rabbi Katz. I
went on a walk with a bachur who was
describing to me Rabbi Katz's base
madrasher amazing.
There's a Rabbi Braunstein base
madrasher Rabbi Son's base madrasher.
It's base managers with a tire with and
people are studying truth. There's truth
there.
My son Ari, you look at these guys
Reuben Yaina, they've come from a base
madrish.
Right here is base madrish, right races
base madrish. Like mamesh with truth.
I have seen one thing and this to me is
divisive.
And I think Reuben Yona is saying this,
I think.
Tell me if it if it if it rings.
Whenever you're studying truth, the
danger of thinking you have the only
truth. The tire is big.
Very big and taste the truth in context
of a big truth.
The when places I've not seen this a lot
in my life.
I've seen this a couple of times in my
life. I'm going to use a place not a
yeshiva because it it there was one so
rehab somewhere. The guy would say over
and over and over nothing else in the
world works. I have the only truth.
He was a brilliant guy who just came to
this base madrish.
The head came here. I met him. He was
brilliant. He was a horrible human
being. He was a big Russia.
One man's opinion. I I mean not sending
this shihur out. I don't want to
announce him as such. But but no,
whoever is in charge is not going out.
Erase this line. I did not find I found
him to be a troubled human being and the
and people left him eventually. What
queued me at first that there was
something wrong the first he was
brilliant. He sat here, he said bro I
spoke to him for a long time. What
queued me something was off, he said
there's not truth anywhere else.
>> Really?
>> You're you're done. You're done I'm done
with you. There's not truth that's about
God, you're divisive. You have an emes?
Anybody to say that not we say by
by the way. Gochum by time. People
have truths.
Ever have a sense, especially tire is a
world of truth.
Tyra, you're dipping into a world of
truth.
When you see the truth that every human
being has a ice of Tyra, has a Tyra like
of Tyra, and you see it as such, and you
have your truth, but there's room for
others truths, so then give all the your
Tyra your Tyra the command.
At the point that you've taken, and this
is the only truth, you're pal God. Be
very wary. I once said such a base
match. You don't usually say it.
I wouldn't stand up for the Tyra there.
Where it was a sense everything else is
bad. That's That's That's a pal God.
That's the vice. That's crazy. That's
crazy. I like Yeshiva. Every Yeshiva has
such a truth. Hafetz Chaim, Philly,
Chaim Berlin, crazy truth. Crazy. Don't
lock yourself away from it. Taste your
own. Have your Messiah. Don't freeze
yourself. Don't Don't exclude yourself.
We gather here today. It's one of the
last days of master of the year. And I
want to share things with the Tyra.
I want to express we have a Tyra here.
Don't ever Don't ever exclude anybody
else's truth ever. You're a pal God.
You're divisive then. There's a pagan in
your very Tyra when you do that.
When somebody tastes truth, there's a
danger to do this. I don't know who ever
was. And my son Akiva said we want to
meet him. I want to meet him, too, cuz I
want to learn what not to be.
But I want to express he tasted truth,
but somehow we felt he has the only
truth. That's pal God. That's divisive.
I sometimes hear Did you ever hear
Democrats or Republican argue? I cannot
stand when people say Democrats, they're
social There's a lot of truth in
Democrat. There's a lot of truth in
Republican. I don't mind that somebody
is Republican and feels a certain truth
that's his neshama, don't say the whole
other side is all shekker. That's so
ridicu- That's That's like silly. It's
really silly. Really. Be a Be a fiery
Republican and say overall the
Democratic Party is not where you go.
They have no truth there? None? You have
the monopoly of the whole truth? That's
a crazy. You're crazy to say that.
That's a palgous. It's a divisive human
being. You've tasted emes kevaldo,
kevaldo. Hold on to your emes. Enjoy
your emes. There's no There's no pieces
There's no hello with hello and a fiery
hello. And argued on Shammai. He
acknowledged space for a Shammai.
At the point you're a palgous, you're
divisive, you have the only truth is the
way I'm explaining it, then your Torah
is in question.
I have seen this. I I haven't seen it
commonly, but I've seen
echoes of this. Be careful. When you
taste the truth, everybody every base
madras carries a secret. The guys in
Rabbi in Rabbi Sol Mansour walk around
with a secret. There's a certain
presentness unforced
to see a place that's that's the
opposite.
Shekker? Stop. Stop. Stop.
>> Stop.
>> Grab your emes and carry it. Don't
passel everything else. That's a
palgous. That's a divisive person.
At the point your emes excludes
everybody and passels, you're a palgous,
then even the emes you have is feltzuch.
It's missing.
It's good to have emes. Hold on and
celebrate your emes. Don't knock
everything else. That's a palgous.
That's a divisive person. That's what I
want to say, Ari. I'm admitting I'm
coming with an agenda. I'm admitting. I
think this Klal Yisrael has to be
united. We have so much truth in our
people. And I have an agenda. We can't
passel the other. We can't. We can't. We
have to find the space for the entirety
of our people.
Don't be
Except for him. That's good.
>> What?
>> Yeah.
>> He has to say that.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
It's not a time to talk. We need
parcels. He's not an absorption of
truth.
He's not a
>> He's not a time to talk. He's not
>> This
>> He's not a time to talk.
>> This is not an absorption of a um Rebbe
Nachman of Breslov idea I'm saying was
what you was connected Was that?
I know I
Yeah. Yeah. It's my
I like the way you said it. I like what
you said about
What do you say, Ari?
It's interesting, right? Very
interesting. Dip into truth and
celebrate truth. Don't
Don't parcel in your wake and having
something if everything's parcel. You
come with a truth and let's say a place
didn't have that aspect. If you parcel,
then we can't get the light that we
need. The light that we need is
tzimtzum. We need Pnei Menachem with
Breslov with with with Chofetz Chaim or
like that light tzimtzum. At the point
this light knocks that light, which
knocks, so then we're going to be in the
dark. We need the light tzimtzum. You
have something, so then in light of what
you have you you actually be secure to
see what that is and that is and the
light tzimtzum.
For sure. For sure. The contrast and to
say the light I give, Hillel said to
Shammai have a light that I don't see by
you. And Sham But he also acknowledged
he has a light he doesn't see by me. And
then together we get Hillel and Shammai.
Emes v'Shalom ahevei, we could have them
both. So yeah, Hillel was shocked that
Shammai didn't have a light. Chofetz
Chaim was shocked that there's a light
the rest of the world doesn't have and
they have a light and incorporate and
let's and then we and then and then that
light with this we need all the lights
to summon all the lights together about
God leaves no room for the other light.
That's what I'm that's what I'm
suggesting. I don't know I'm right. I
don't want to I don't want to block out
any other light. It's one human being
I'm trying to learn I have the same
questions. I love that Akiva and Moshe
you guys are meant for Torah.
I love that they say about God divisive
what is that? Like show me tell me a guy
who's like what are you talking about? I
promise you that's how you supposed to
learn. You're both tired that could be
like beg you learn Torah keep learning
Torah. That's how you learn. I don't
know the answer. So any is divisive you
can learn a childish.
I'm giving a certain picture that I
bumped into my life. I bumped in what
really once in my life I saw a base
madras they said there's no truth that
it was like it was like famous in the
base madras there was a bit of any other
truth. It made me like skeptical I don't
I you probably don't have truth. I'm not
standing up for that Torah.
If there's a light then there are other
lights then there's there's there's
if it's the only mocking making fun no
other lights that's about God that's
divisive. That's that's exclusion it's
not true. People have a big question MS
to every I see a group of going I think
they have a light. I mean they have a
you're foolish no they're nothing.
There's a light of course
let alone
there's a light that don't knock a base
madras a community don't nothing they're
all just searching and they're in the
dark only you find light that's not you
have a light that you and you can
contrast and share and be frustrated
that others don't see your light and
fight for your light and express your
light and go to war for it.
Knowing that this light also has to be
seen, your light must be seen. The
world's dark without your light.
Fight for your life. Express your light.
Bring it out, your light. And leave room
for his light. A palga only has his
light. That's what I'm I don't know I'm
right.
I don't want to be a pretend cuz I don't
know in the Gamara, but the Gamara
describes a Talmud chacham sayad emes,
but he's divisive. What is that? I'm
claiming that wasn't room for any other
emes. There was only his ice. That's the
palga. That's divisive. Wherever you go,
there's it's only this light. No other
lights. That's divisive by its essence.
That's divisive cuz there are other
lights. Hillel fought for the light of
Hillel, but he knew there was a Shammai.
That's That's what I'm bringing out.
This this rehab ended up everybody there
like rebelled. It was a cult. It was
crazy stuff.
I want to say I'm being telling you a
story that would clue me that something
was off is the man was telling me like
nobody else has truth.
I was like looking at the guy like
that's that's a crazy thing to say. I'm
like what
Why would you think You You want to say
you have a certain thing to bring that's
missing They have a different emes that
No emes else There was a certain bitel
of any other emes. Do you know what I
mean, R' Leib? I don't know I don't know
if everybody's bumped into such a thing
in the extreme.
There's subtle and I agree he could say
it's it's subtle because you could say
you have a certain chiddush. Anytime you
have a chiddush, the world doesn't know
your chiddush. It's your chiddush.
Everybody hears an ice. The world
doesn't know your ice. But no, he's an
ice, too.
To tell me there're no other ices
It's I'm stupid. It's
I wish I wish this guy was here now.
Maybe not. But I wish he was here. I'd
have him speak to you. You'd hear what I
mean.
You ever bumped into this irony, the
extreme of it?
There's a sense only this nowhere else
has. There's no truth anywhere? None?
Where do you attain your life, Eli?
Not I want to hear, I want to hear.
Share your light.
Loud.
Being what?
And what Yeah.
>> Maybe it's like even maybe more more
shalom, not more but like
Like now it's like
not like I'm not I'm agreeing out what
you believe in to be I believe in the
same thing. I believe in our side, we
believe in the Torah. I'm not bringing
out
but you're just not not lighting it up.
That's how we all like told
>> I like that. I like that. I like that. I
like that. I like that vision and that
picture. But that acknowledges that
there's light by everybody. It
acknowledges that. And you know I mean
we can each bring out my light can bring
out his light. That that's
You've ever encountered the world I'm
describing echoes of it. There levels.
I'm I'm like thinking the extreme helps
me picture what I'm talking.
You've ever acknowledged that you ever
came into contact with such a thing?
I've seen it rarely in my life the
extreme.
Wow.
It's the most divisive. When you're part
of that, there's a club that only Yeah.
Yeah. I've seen it twice in a real but I
saw in the Yeshiva a very small not a
famous not I've seen it twice in my
life.
It was like a mocking of everybody else.
A sense that there's no truth elsewhere.
I don't I think they have some truth.
I don't agree with that at all. There's
billions of people out there.
Christianity found some truth. They
found
But this is Don't don't don't look at it
that I'm I'm not I'm not coming to
criticize you, Rebbe.
Only MS. Christianity came from Judaism.
Of course they have MS. They have some
MS.
They have the same people have mis- They
have mistakes. Of course. Hashem has one
Hashem.
But Christianity where Hirsch says
there's a spark of the Messiah, they
found some truth from Yiddishkeit.
Judeo-Christian values from Yiddishkeit.
Nobody Nobody looks at a anybody and
says they're all a bunch of stupid The
world's done. You don't Why would
anybody That's crazy.
Don't listen to that.
I don't don't know I don't want to My
share what I'm saying.
It's not It's not It's a They're light
They're light of light. People can have
confusion. They have certain done. They
need our light. Trust me. Klal Yisrael
has MS. And Klal Yisrael's job is meant
to be a light to the nations.
But to just say everybody Why Why do we
go to
to pick up and Rebbe Nachman says
it's cuz there's truths by the and
we pick up those truths. There's some
things It's to say it's all garbage. Has
v'shalom.
We don't We don't We don't look at it
that way. It's not It's not how we look
at it that way. Hashem's not laughing at
the whole world.
It's not like a mockery. They're human
beings.
No mesh.
I don't
I don't think that way, Levi. Am I
saying anything so contra- I think some
youngsters get confused by this.
But I know I know, hear what you're
saying. What the re
It's not even a problem. The Rebbe's
light, but
There's light. There's light. There's a
world of light, and then
And I I hear what you're saying because
he's trying to like moon that sun. So,
this I don't care the extreme focus and
the belief that's for sure.
But that But there's there's light.
There's space for light. There's a palga
where there's no space for other light.
That's
This is what I wanted to share this with
the chevre. Nobody's meshuba to my shad.
I would be mamesh this palga.
