As tensions between Georgia and the breakaway region of South Ossetia have been growing, Georgian military forces begin their offensive to bring the region back under their sovereignty. On 7 August, the opening bombardment on Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia, starts with more than 100 heavy mortars, artillery pieces and Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (better known as MLRS) opening fire.
