The #7 Commandment of Dating: Actively Listen - Rabbi Eli Deutsch

So many people don't listen. Welcome back to the 10 Commandments of Dating. This is commandment number seven, thou shalt actively listen. And by listening, we mean actually hearing what the other person wants to say, what they're intending to say, what they're really feeling, what's on their heart because you want to hear where they are, not constantly preparing your response to what they're saying while they're saying it, right? That doesn't make people feel like they're being heard. That feels like they're being deflected and answered to. But when we really hear what the other person is saying, they feel received, and what do you know, they also start going deeper into their feelings and their experiences. And this is something you want to do because you want to understand who they are, and part of that is based on where they're coming from. Their beliefs, yes, but also what are the experiences that led them to those beliefs and led them to those feelings. When we are in a way of not cutting people off and hearing them for them, it gives them a sense of acceptance, validation, respectfulness, and they go deeper with you, and then you can understand who they are, and they can feel you receiving them, and then you see where things go.
