100 years ago, Jews could not buy property here in Long Beach. By the 1940s, about 80% of the population here was Jewish. The Jewish story of Long Beach is one you do not want to miss. There was a real estate tycoon, William Reynolds, who was responsible for [music] building very, very famous Brooklyn neighborhoods like Bed-Stuy and Borough Park and Coney Island. However, he was a racist, which means nobody could really buy here except if you were white. In 1918, he went bankrupt, and that's when that law fell apart. The story we're about to cover this week is about Jewish perseverance and success. Even though it's a small little beach town here, the philosophy, the mentality, the emunah v'bitachon that the Jews had here is a model for Jews all around the world. Whether it's facing darkness in the early 1900s [music] or it's getting back up after Sandy, the Jewish community here serves as a reminder of who we truly are.
